It’s not every day that you see someone placing his fingers in a man’s ears or touching his tongue. But then again, this is the one who told his disciples to eat his body and drink his blood, who touched a man with leprosy, and who put mud on another man’s eyes. By touching this man’s ears and tongue, Jesus singled out the parts of his body that had kept him trapped in isolation. He showed that he knew exactly what the man needed and that he wasn’t afraid to deal with it. And through that physical touch, Jesus brought life back to him. The man was no longer trapped in silence. Jesus is very close to you as well. He knows you better even than you know yourself. He sees the ways in which you have become isolated — whether through sin or fear or anxiety or sickness. So he asks you to let down your guard and allow him to come into your heart and heal whatever is hurting. Today, Jesus will come to you in a very physical, personal way in the Eucharist. As you receive him, open your heart. Let him enter the silence and messiness inside you so that he can set you free. “Jesus, I welcome you into my heart. Come, Lord, with your healing touch.” The Church dedicates the month of September to Our Lady of Sorrows, also known as Mater Dolorosa (Mother of Sorrows). This devotion recalls the Blessed Virgin Mary’s spiritual martyrdom in virtue of her perfect union with the Passion of Christ. This was her role in salvation history, and what merited her place as the spiritual Mother of all Christians. This is symbolized by a single sword, or seven swords, piercing Mary’s suffering heart, as foretold in Simeon’s prophecy. Traditionally the Church meditates on the “Seven Sorrows” of our Blessed Mother: 1. The prophecy of Simeon; 2. The Holy Family’s flight into Egypt; 3. The loss of the Child Jesus for three days; 4. The meeting of Mary and Jesus as He carried his cross; 5. Jesus’ crucifixion and death; 6. Jesus’ sacred body taken down from the cross; and 7. Jesus’s burial. The feast of Our Lady of Sorrows (Mater Dolorosa) is September 15th. Father Schulte is donating his kayak for a drawing. Any student through the age of high school who is a parishioner at either parish should submit their name with a phone number on a piece of paper and send it to the parish office. The kayak is on the west side of the rectory if you would like to look at it. The drawing will be held Sunday, September 12th!
