Through its suite of active and passive safety systems, Bendix Commer-cial Vehicle Systems helps to enhance the safety of today’s commercial ve-hicles, yet it reinforces the point that no technol-ogy replaces the need for skilled drivers practicing safe driving habits on our highways. The com-pany supports the efforts of Operation Safe Driver, which took place October 19-25, and helped fleets and owner-operators meet the ongoing challenges of keeping highways safe for everyone.

Operation Safe Driver was launched in 2007 by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) and aims to reduce the number of deaths resulting from crashes involving large trucks, buses, and passen-ger vehicles. The CVSA, in partnership with the Fed-eral Motor Carrier Safety

Administration (FMC-SA), is promoting traffic law and safety belt enforce-

ment, roadside inspections, regulatory compliance, and commercial driver educa-tion. Operation Safe Driver also aims to educate all drivers about operating safely around commercial vehicles.

According to the most recent FMCSA Large Truck and Bus Crash Facts report, more than 4,100 people died in large truck and bus crashes in the U.S. in 2012.

Bendix, the North American leader in the de-velopment and manufac-ture of leading-edge active safety and braking system technologies, is committed to providing advanced ve-hicle technologies and so-lutions, as well as a robust menu of ongoing fleet sup-port for maximizing high-way safety.

“As our industry engi-neers safer vehicles and develops more effective safety systems, it becomes increasingly important for us to also provide proper, wide-ranging training for the drivers and technicians

who operate and maintain them,” said Fred Andersky, Bendix Director of

Government and Indus-try Affairs. “Through an ever-growing offering of awareness and education programs, available in-per-son and online, we make good on our commitment to share our knowledge with the industry.”

To help address the increasing adoption of advanced safety technolo-gies such as full stability, collision mitigation, and Reduced Stopping Dis-tance (RSD) foundation drum and disc brakes, Bendix offers a range of hands-on training op-tions, including: the Ben-dix BrakeTraining School; on-site demonstrations and detailed system ex-planations; on-site ride-and drive training with customer vehicles; and on-site technician training covering system mainte-nance and troubleshoot-ing. Bendix also hosts track demonstrations

where on-site training is impractical.

The Bendix Brake Train-ing School, one of the in-dustry’s longest-running training programs, has ed-ucated more than 250,000 students since its incep-tion. The three-day pro-gram takes a comprehen-sive approach to the entire range of foundation and air brake system components, and provides in-depth cov-erage of advanced safety solutions.

Additionally, more than 24,000 students have en-rolled in the Bendix On-Line Brake School at www.brake-school.com since its launch in March 2013. The free on-line curriculum has become an essential part of the training program for many fleets across North America. The curriculum, available 24/7/365, cov-ers all aspects of electron-ics and air brake mainte-nance, including courses on lane departure warning systems, air compressors, tire pressure monitoring systems, wheel-end main-tenance, and radar align-ment for active safety sys-tems. Course availability is always growing to meet the varied needs of the com-mercial vehicle industry.

Bendix also supports the goals of Operation Safe Driver by delivering technologies that assist safe vehicle operation, such as Bendix ESP Elec-tronic Stability Program full-stability system, Ben-dix Wingman Advanced – A Collision Mitigation Technology, and AutoVue Lane Departure Warning (LDW) System from Ben-dix CVS. Next year, Ben-dix will launch the next generation of its active safety systems in North America, introducing sta-tionary vehicle braking and other advances to the market as well as improv-ing the performance of its existing systems through stronger, deeper integra-tion and upgraded com-ponents.

Bendix ESP helps ad-dress both roll and direc-tional instability through sensors that recognize and mitigate conditions that could lead to rollover and loss-of-control. Wingman Advanced uses a radar sen-sor mounted to the front of a vehicle to provide active cruise control with brak-ing features, along with collision mitigation tech-nology that delivers both warnings and active inter-

ventions to help drivers potentially avoid rear-end collisions or at least help reduce their severity. The AutoVue LDW system uses a camera with a wide field of view to track visible lane markings and detects when the vehicle begins to drift toward an unintended lane change.

Bendix wheel-end safe-ty solutions that meet and exceed RSD standards for shorter stops include the higher-performing ver-sion of its Extended Ser-vice drum brake (Bendix ES brakes) and the Bendix ADB22X air disc brake. Both are produced by Ben-dix Spicer

Foundation Brake LLC, a joint venture between Bendix Commercial Vehi-cle Systems LLC and Dana Commercial Vehicle Prod-ucts, LLC.

Andersky noted that all Bendix safety systems – both active braking and warning-only technologies – are designed to supple-ment safe driving practices and are not intended to en-able or encourage drivers to drive more aggressively. Responsibility for the safe operation of the vehicle remains with the driver at

all times. “Well-trained, skilled drivers practicing safe driving habits are vi-tal, and no technology can replace their importance at the wheel,” he said.

By delivering on areas critical to fleets’ success – safety, vehicle perfor-mance, and efficiency – and providing unparalleled post-sales support, Bendix helps fleets and drivers strengthen return on in-vestment in equipment and technology.

“Safer highways are the result of strong collabora-tion across the commercial vehicle industry, from driv-ers and fleet managers to technicians and engineers,” Andersky said. “At Bendix, our ongoing dialogues with fleets, a focus on continu-ous enhancement of the value and impact of today’s technologies, and support of the goals of Operation Safe Driver are just a few of the ways we continue to help make the roads even safer for everyone.” b

The Mack mDRIVE au-tomated manual transmis-sion (AMT) is now stan-dard on the Mack Pinnacle highway model, offering increased fuel efficiency, productivity and safety to even more Mack custom-ers. The ever-increasing popularity of the mDRIVE, driven by its proven perfor-mance and benefits, led to the decision. More than 50 percent of Pinnacle mod-els sold now are equipped with the transmission.

Stephen Roy, presi-dent of Mack Trucks North American Sales and Marketing, made the an-nouncement during the 2014 American Trucking Associations Management Conference & Exhibition in San Diego.

“We at Mack decided to offer the mDRIVE as stan-dard equipment because we believe that the best components delivering the best benefits to the custom-er should be the standard,” Roy said. “Our confidence in the mDRIVE and its abil-ity to offer increased ef-ficiency, productivity and safety will set the bar for the industry.”

Engineered and built to Mack standards, the mDRIVE is based on prov-

en technology, requiring minimal service and sig-nificantly reducing main-tenance downtime. With its simplified shifting, the mDRIVE also can help at-tract and retain drivers.

“The mDRIVE helps customers work faster and smarter by eliminating tra-ditional shifting,” Roy said. “By removing that task, mDRIVE allows drivers to focus on the job at hand: delivering their cargo safe-ly and on time.”

The 12-speed mDRIVE continuously monitors multiple driving variables to maximize driver pro-ductivity, performance and fuel efficiency. Sophisticat-ed programming and pre-cise engineering and man-ufacturing deliver smooth shifts and automatically select the best gear for con-ditions.

The mDRIVE is con-trolled through a dash-mounted shift pad with an integrated display to indicate the current gear. The Mack Co-Pilot driver display, located in the cen-ter of the instrument panel, displays the mDRIVE’s sta-tus, including the number of upshifts or downshifts available, the current gear and the current operating

mode.The mDRIVE, a key

component of Mack’s in-tegrated powertrains, is designed to work seam-lessly with Mack MP series engines. When combined with a Mack Pedigree Pow-ertrain, the mDRIVE can boost fuel efficiency by up to 1.5 percent compared to a standard transmission.

For applications where fuel economy is a pri-ority, Pinnacle models can be spec’d with the Super Econodyne inte-grated powertrain pack-age. Featuring the Mack MP7 or Mack MP8 engine, mDRIVE, proprietary drive axles and Mack’s custom software, the Super Econodyne pack-age maximizes efficiency without sacrificing perfor-mance. When compared to similarly spec’d vehi-cles, the MP7 Super Econ-odyne and MP8 Super Econodyne provide fuel economy improvements of up to 4 percent and 3.5 percent respectively.

A key feature of the Super Econodyne pack-age is “down speeding” of the engine. “Down speed-ing” reduces engine rpm by more than 200 rpm at a highway speed of 65 mph, cruising at 1160 rpm versus 1380 rpm. This decrease in engine rpm reduces fuel consumption, with a corre-sponding reduction in CO2 emissions. b

Iowa Mold Tooling Co. Inc. (IMT), an Osh-kosh Corporation com-pany (NYSE:OSK), has introduced the 32 tm crane to its lineup of ar-ticulating cranes ranging from 2.5 to 80 tm. The 32/222 crane is designed for superior operator productivity with unique lift and reach capabilities requested by customers.

The excellent strength and reach of the IMT 32 tm crane, along with high working speed and preci-sion control, maximize operator efficiency. Rat-ed 222,050 foot-pounds, the crane features a max-imum lifting capacity of 15,058 pounds (6,830 kilograms) at a radius of 14 feet 9 inches (4.5 meters). The crane offers one of the industry’s lon-gest horizontal reaches in the 30 tm range: 69 feet 7 inches (21.2 me-ters) with eight hydraulic extensions.

Productivity-enhanc-

ing features of the 32 tm articulating crane include the dual-power plus link-arm system, 15-degree overbending, continuous rotation and a standard radio remote control. The crane comes standard with the RCL (rated capacity limiter) 5300 system to monitor load moment, operation and function.

“At IMT, we’re com-mitted to helping our customers become more productive — and, as a result, more profitable,” said John Field, IMT Product Manager of Ma-terial Handling. “The 32 tm crane offers the per-formance to make loading and unloading materials more efficient. Operators can move and haul more materials with this crane, which has a positive im-pact on the bottom line.”

Ultra-high tensile steel construction of the hex-agonal boom provides a superior lift-to-weight

ratio, high lifting capac-ity at long reaches and increased payload capa-bilities. Required mount-ing space has been mini-mized, providing more space on the truck body and additional truck con-figuration possibilities.

The dual-power plus link-arm system found on the 32 tm articulating crane:• Offers the best lifting

capacities under all conditions,

• Provides precise and regular movements in the entire working area,

• Is particularly well-suited for long reaches and lifting in high posi-tions with demanding equipment (such as fly-jib and winch),

• Works particularly well with the stretch boom system at any height and any reach.“Overbending” means

the working area be-tween the main boom and the jib is no less than 195 degrees. Over-bending offers greater flexibility when working through narrow passages and under overhead ob-structions; the ability to lift maximum loads in all

boom positions; and a lower total height when the crane is stowed on the truck body.

The RCL system mon-itors the crane’s load moment, operation and function. In an overload situation, the system warns the operator and interrupts the distribu-tion of oil for crane func-tions, while allowing functions that reduce load moment to remain operational. The RCL 5300 cooperates with the user and compensates when the RCL senses a situation requiring inter-vention.

Additional features of the 32 tm crane include an internal hose routing system for hose protec-tion, multiple stabilizer options and an innova-tive, flexible stow brack-et design that secures boom for transportation but does not allow brack-et damage.

The 32 tm crane joins the complete lineup of IMT articulating cranes ranging from the 2.5 tm (18,085 foot-pound) model to the 80 tm (516,440 foot-pound) model.

The Canadian Truck-ing Alliance (CTA) is hailing the fact that a key plank in the Cana-da-US Beyond the Bor-der (BTB) Action Plan – the ability for carriers from both countries to conduct in-transit ship-ments through the other country – is close to be-ing achieved.

The Alliance, a fed-eration of the provincial trucking associations representing over 4,500 trucking companies from across Canada, has been involved in in-tense discussions with Canadian and US gov-ernment officials and the American Trucking Associations in an at-tempt to break a log-jam that threatened to scup-per any prospect of in-transit moves in either country. Last spring, the Canadian and U.S. customs agencies ap-peared to reach a har-monization agreement on the data required for domestic goods transit-ing through the other country, but then went offside when US Cus-toms and Border Protec-tion (CBP) subsequently insisted that the “value” of the in-transit goods remain on the list of re-quired data elements for

electronic submission, which CTA argued, would be practically impossible for carriers to provide for what is a domestic shipment.

For decades it had been common practice for Canadian carriers moving loads say from Toronto to Calgary to transit through the Unit-ed States as opposed to crossing the top of the Lakehead in Northern Ontario in order to take advantage of the superior multi-lane divided inter-state highways which of-fer safer conditions, less wear and tear on vehi-cles, access to rest stops, etc. Since the goods were not entering the U.S. for consumption or be-ing offloaded or stored, they could enter with minimal documentation. US carriers made simi-lar in-transit moves tak-ing Canadian highways between points like Buf-falo, NY and Detroit, MI. However, U.S. changes to the cross border pro-cess in the aftermath of 9/11 led to in-transit shipments treated as in-ternational loads, subject to full documentation, including the problemat-ic requirement for “value data,” effectively end-ing in-transit shipments

through the U.S. for Ca-nadian carriers. Canada did not adopt the US approach and therefore US in-transit shipments were able to continue, creating an uneven play-ing field.

In meetings last week, CBP accepted a CTA proposal to allow Canadian carriers who are not able to provide a value for the shipments to designate a default value of $95,000.00 to the shipment – a figure that is based on con-tract of carriage rules where for claims pur-poses a default value is based on $2/pound for 45,000 pound load.

Value and estimated value of goods will re-main a CBP requirement (and must be provided) where it is obtainable by the carrier. Howev-er, in cases where it is not obtainable, CBP has agreed that the default value will be accept-able. Additionally, if the goods are not prop-erly repatriated back to Canada, the existing process – where a pen-alty will be issued based on the declared value of the load, whether it is actual, estimated or de-fault – remains in place.

The next step, like-

ly to occur during the summer of 2015, is for CBP to launch a short-term pilot involving no more than nine carriers to begin moving goods in-transit through desig-nated US ports.

“The agreement is the product of a lot of hard work by govern-ment and industry of-ficials on both sides of the border,” said David Bradley, President and CEO of CTA.

“It was tough sled-ding at times, but ul-

timately the process worked and while there is still work to be done the outcome on in-transits is consistent with the vision both the Prime Minister of Cana-da and the President of the United States had for the Beyond the Bor-der initiative.”

Bradley said a num-ber of individuals de-serve credit for the agreement: From Cana-da: Public Safety Min-ister Steven Blaney and his staff; David McGov-

ern and officials from the Privy Council Office and the President of the Canada Border Service Agency, Luc Portelance and his staff.

In the United States: Department Homeland Security Deputy Sec-retary Mayorkas and his staff; the Canadian Embassy staff; and US Customs and Border Protection Commis-sioner Gil Kerlikowske and his staff who were instrumental in the process. b

NASCAR recently an-nounced three key en-hancements in the NAS-CAR XFINITY Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for the 2015 season. The updates include: • Beginning next season,

the qualifying rule for the NASCAR XFINITY Series (currently the NASCAR Nationwide Series) and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will resemble that of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Se-ries, and will emphasize speed.

• The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series max-imum starting field will be set at 32 trucks.

• The drivers’ last name will be featured on the back window of each series’ cars and trucks, helping fans to better identify the drivers.“Our mission of pro-

viding the best on-track product possible is always among our top objectives,” said Robin Pemberton,

Senior Vice President of Competition and Racing Development. “We’re con-fident in the direction these changes will take these se-ries.” 2015 NASCAR XFINITY Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Qualifying Procedure

Next season in the NASCAR XFINITY Series, cars starting in positions 1-33 will be determined by their fastest single lap dur-ing qualifying in descend-ing order with the fastest qualifier starting first. The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will follow the same procedure for posi-tions 1-27.

In the XFINITY Series, the next six positions will first be assigned to the high-est ranking cars in owner points that have attempted all of the races, have not already earned a starting position through qualifying and have entered the event by the posted entry dead-line. The final starting posi-

tion will be awarded to the most recent eligible past champion driver. If there is no eligible past champion driver, then a seventh car will make the field based upon owner points.

In the NASCAR Camp-ing World Truck Series, the next four positions will first be assigned to the highest ranking trucks in owner points that have attempted all of the races, have not already earned a starting position through qualifying and have entered the event by the posted entry dead-line. The final starting posi-tion will be awarded to the most recent eligible past champion driver. If there is no eligible past champion driver, then a fifth truck will make the field based upon owner points.

Prior to this enhance-ment, the top 30 cars and top 25 trucks in owner points in each series, re-spectively, were guaran-teed a starting spot in each of those series’ events. Starting next year, a maxi-

mum of seven cars and five trucks will be locked into a given NASCAR XFINITY Series or NASCAR Camp-ing World Truck Series race, respectively.

If a qualifying session is cancelled because of inclement weather, each series’ field will be set per the rule book with start-ing lineups determined by practice speeds.Maximum Field Set At 32 Trucks For NASCAR Camping World Truck Series

As NASCAR continues to encourage and reward hard racing, help solidify and build the ownership base, add even more dra-ma and intrigue to the race weekend and most impor-tantly, provide fans the best competition possible, the maximum starting field for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will be set at 32 trucks starting in 2015, as opposed to the 36-truck field in previous years.

A maximum NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starting field continues to stand at 43 cars while the NASCAR XFINITY Series will remain at 40.Drivers’ Last Names On Rear Window

This new design element is part of the implementa-tion of NASCAR’s Industry Action Plan, specifically in the area of Driver Star Power. This enhancement will feature the drivers’ last name displayed on the upper rear window of cars and trucks, helping fans more easily identify the

drivers. The window treat-ment will not affect the on-track competition and plac-ing it on the back window allows for both series spon-sors – XFINITY (starting in 2015) and Camping World – to continue to maintain placement on the front windshield. b

For the ultimate traction off-road or on the track, new Spicer performance spools were introduced by Dana Holding Corporation (NYSE: DAN) at the Spe-cialty Equipment Manufac-turers Association (SEMA) Show, held recently at the Las Vegas Convention Cen-ter.

Spicer spools keep the right and left axles spin-ning together, delivering constant traction and peak performance.

“Spicer performance spools offer benefits that standard differentials can-not offer,” said Bill Gry-zenia, Vice President and General Manager, Dana Aftermarket. “They replace

the need for a differential, eliminating failures from high-torque, high-impact conditions.”

The Spicer spools are forged from high-strength chromoly 4140 steel to provide optimal perfor-mance. Each unit is heat treated and metallurgical-ly tested to ensure ideal hardness for performance applications.

With 21 stock-keeping units (SKUs), the Spicer spools are available for Dana, Ford, GM, Chrysler and Toyota axle applica-tions. Special, lightweight versions are available for some applications, pro-viding reduced rotating mass. b

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) recently announced vehicle order intake for Class 6 – 8 NAF-TA and exports markets reached 31,304 units in the month of October. The order figure represents the single largest order month on record for DTNA, as well as sets the new in-dustry benchmark in terms of order intake in a one-month period.

In October, month over month industry orders were up 61.2 percent, with DTNA’s growth of 116.9 percent. DTNA’s order share was 51.9 percent of the industry total of 60,307 units according to the monthly preliminary order report issued by ACT Research Co. (ACT). Nu-merous large fleet orders

contributed to record order intake, as well as accelerat-ed order intake from small to medium sized fleets seeking expedited replace-ment of aging vehicles.

“Daimler Trucks has a broader global footprint than any other manufac-turer with strong pillars in Europe, America, and Asia. Intelligent platforms and components sharing enable us to deliver in each region the products with the best total cost of ownership for our customers,” says Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard, the Daimler Board of Manage-ment Member responsible for Daimler Trucks and Buses. “The number of in-coming orders generated by Daimler Trucks North America in October dem-onstrates that our strategy

is effective and that our vehicles provide customers with tangible benefits.”

DTNA continues to be the undisputed North Amer-ican market leader with nearly 38 percent of the in-dustry’s Class 6 – 8 NAFTA retail sales. DTNA’s flagship vehicle, the Freightliner Cas-cadia Evolution is pacing industry order intake for long-haul applications that demand the highest level of fuel efficiency.

“Daimler Trucks North America is proud of our re-cord-breaking October and we offer our sincere thanks to our customers and deal-ers for their confidence in our products,” said Mar-tin Daum, President and CEO, Daimler Trucks North America. “Our customers’ dedication to acquiring vehi-cles with a proven real cost of ownership solution has driven sales of the Cascadia Evolution, as well as the ex-pansion of Daimler Trucks North America’s entire prod-uct portfolio.” b

More than 300 people joined the U.S. Forest Ser-vice, the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, and federal, state and local representa-tives Wednesday to cel-ebrate the harvesting of the 2014 U.S. Capitol Christ-mas Tree near Cass Lake, Minn.

After the ceremony, the special 75-foot white spruce from the Chip-pewa National Forest and the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe was loaded onto a heavy duty trailer - ex-pandable to 80 feet - and coupled to a Kenworth T880, Kenworth’s flagship heavy haul vocational truck.

The official U.S. Capi-tol Christmas Tree tour truck is equipped with the powerful and fuel-efficient 500-hp PACCAR MX-13 engine with 1,850 lb-ft of torque, reliable Eaton Fuller 13-speed transmis-sion, and comfortable 52-inch mid-roof sleeper. The T880 was made available to Kenworth for the tour by PacLease, which provides customized full-service lease, rental and contract maintenance programs fea-turing Kenworth trucks.

The special T880’s dis-tinctive design incorpo-

rates a U.S. Capitol night image, brightly lit and decorated Christmas tree, 2014 Capitol Christmas Tree official seal, and logo of Wille Transport, a long-time Kenworth customer based in Cohasset, Minn. An owner-operator and a company driver with Wille Transport will pilot the Kenworth T880 - and a Kenworth T680 Advan-tage with 76-inch sleeper, respectively - during the more than 30-stop tour.

The T680 Advantage will transport 70 smaller Christmas trees donated by the Minnesota Tree Growers Association. Those trees will deco-rate the inside of the U.S. Capitol building and other federal sites throughout Washington, D.C. The T680 Advantage also will bring 10,000 ornaments created by children and others from Minnesota communities to adorn the Capitol Christmas Tree and the smaller trees. The T680 Advantage on the tour is specified with the Eaton Fuller Advan-tage 10-speed automated transmission, Diamond VIT interior, Kenworth Idle Management System, and Kenworth’s new,

factory-installed aerody-namic package. The T680 Advantage offers an ultra-aero spec to provide the very best Kenworth model for fuel economy.

The 50th anniversary Capitol Christmas Tree tour’s initial stops are Sunday, November 2, at Itasca State Park and Bemidji, Minn. Among other notable stops are: November 7 - Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.); No-vember 13 - Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum (Grand Rap-ids, Mich.); November 14 - Michigan State Univer-sity (East Lansing, Mich.); November 15 - Henry Ford Museum (Dear-born, Mich.); November 16 - FirstEnergy Stadium (Cleveland, Ohio) for the Cleveland Browns versus Houston Texans football game; and November 17 - Kenworth Truck Compa-ny assembly plant (Chilli-cothe, Ohio).

The Capitol Christmas Tree will be lit by Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio, in a special cer-emony in early Decem-ber. House Speaker John W. McCormack began the Capitol Christmas Tree tra-dition in 1964.

A complete tour sched-ule may be found at the 2014 U.S. Capitol Christ-mas Tree web site (www.capitolchristmastree.com) so that the public can track the truck’s progress. b

Allison Transmission Holdings Inc. (NYSE: ALSN) recently an-nounced availability of a new option to fully electri-fy components used with its H 40/50 EP hybrid pro-pulsion system for transit buses and coaches.

Co-developed with Vanner Inc., Increased Accessory Power II (IAP II) is a customizable elec-tric distribution platform that provides power from the hybrid system to ac-cessory components such as electric air condition-ing, electric air compres-sors and power steering systems. IAP II includes either a Single or Dual Hybrid Beltless Alternator (HBA).

“Allison’s standard H 40/50 EP system typically improves fuel economy 20-30 percent over stan-dard diesel buses,” said Michael G. Headly, Senior Vice President of Global Marketing, Sales and Ser-vice for Allison Trans-

mission. “When using a Vanner HBA with our sys-tem, a number of transit agencies in the U.S. have reported an additional average fuel economy im-provement of 16 percent, for a total improvement of 36 percent or more.”

In addition to improving fuel economy, IAP II has also demonstrated these benefits:• Allows accessories to

operate at the most effi-cient speeds, improving energy management by reducing parasitic loads.

• Increases brake respon-siveness by building air brake pressure faster than a conventional en-gine-driven pump.

• Improves low-speed ve-hicle maneuverability due to smoother power steering.

• Enables faster cabin cooling, without strain-ing the engine or burning unnecessary fuel by run-ning engines at high idle.IAP II builds on the

foundation of Allison’s parallel hybrid propul-sion system, as well as its release with the Van-ner HBA and IAP I. Like IAP I, IAP II utilizes a high voltage distribution module (HVDM) for intel-ligent control of high volt-age electrical power and an HBA (or dual HBAs) for DC to DC conversion of high voltage to 24 DC. However, IAP II adds an inverter that converts high voltage DC to high voltage AC that can power electric air conditioning, electric air compressor and power steering, while simultane-ously eliminating the cost and need for the air con-ditioning system’s integral inverter.

“Full electrification of a hybrid bus is the single most advantageous op-tion a transit authority can realize that will im-prove fuel economy, re-duce emissions and lower maintenance costs,” said Steve Funk, President of

Vanner. “The Allison H 40/50 EP hybrid already has a proven track record as a reliable sustainability solution. IAP II improves on the hybrid’s efficiency by distributing the hybrid power throughout the en-tire bus.”

The IAP II system is available in standard and articulated bus applica-tions. All components will be delivered to OEMs on a pre-assembled and pre-wired rack. The racked solution enables custom-ers to specify only those electrified components that they demand, while also offering better trou-bleshooting and easier maintenance than a boxed or individually sourced solution. Vanner will co-ordinate warranties for the IAP II ‘racked’ compo-nents.

Since 2003, Allison has delivered over 6,500 hy-brid propulsion systems which have accumulated nearly 650 million miles, saving over 34 million gal-lons of fuel and preventing 340 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. It is antici-pated that IAP II will offer even further fuel efficiency improvements. b

The Freightliner Trucks Run Smart Hauler Challenge raced to the season finale on Oct. 10, 2014 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., where Greg Sorber, driver of the #22 Shell/Pennzoil Ford Fusion for Joey Logano and Team Penske, took home the grand prize and Freight-liner Trucks trophy.

Freightliner Trucks, the Official Hauler of NASCAR, has been hold-ing this competition since 2006 to challenge the abilities of NASCAR team hauler drivers. The driver that most skillfully navigates the turns and obstacles of the finale course is crowned the winner and recognized as the year’s hauler champion.

The intense competi-tion of the 2014 season delivered an exhilarating finish at the Hauler Chal-lenge finale. The final four drivers, #2 Michael “Bama” Williams and

#22, Greg Sorber, driv-ers for Team Penske, Joe Gibbs Racing’s #18 driv-er, Bob Hannigan, and Stewart-Haas Racing’s #10 driver Rocky Boggs, showcased the skill and determination of every driver.

“The truck drivers in NASCAR are some of the hardest working people in the sport and Freight-liner Trucks takes great pride in rewarding their dedication through our competition every year.” said Stacey Premo, mo-torsports marketing manager for Freightliner Trucks. “Congratula-tions to Greg Sorber for winning the Freightliner Trucks trophy and all of the drivers who compet-ed so closely throughout the season.”

Federal Environment Minister, the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, has an-nounced Canada’s inten-tion to develop proposed regulations to further re-duce GHG emissions from on-road heavy-duty vehi-cles and engines for post-2018 model years.

The official version of the Notice of Intent will be published in a forthcom-ing edition of the Canada Gazette Part I

The notice of intent is not expected to con-tain significant technical details, as the US EPA is not expected to publish its notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) un-til the spring of 2015. (Historically, the prac-tice regarding North American vehicle emis-sion standards has been for the EPA NPRM to set the basis for future con-sultations between En-vironment Canada and regulated parties).

“The Canadian Truck-ing Alliance (CTA) would encourage the Government of Canada and their provincial part-ners to work with our sector to attain the goals of reduced greenhouse gas emissions in both an effective and efficient manner,’ said CTA senior VP Stephen Laskowski.

“CTA is hopeful this round of regulatory con-sultation will not only explore the viability and market readiness of new technologies but force provincial governments to review and remove regu-latory barriers preventing the use of GHG emission reducing technologies.”

Over the coming months, CTA will be at-tempting to work with gov-ernments, manufacturers and industry to identify the soundest technological and regulatory path to achiev-ing fuel efficiency improve-ments for all sectors of the trucking industry. b

Distinctive. Unmistak-able. Uniquely Peterbilt. Those are just a few of the praises being used to de-scribe the new special edi-tion Pride & Class Model 389, according to Peterbilt Motors Company, which recently announced that the truck is now in produc-tion and shipping to cus-tomers and Peterbilt deal-erships throughout North America.

“Peterbilt has defined the look of trucking for generations and the new Model 389 Pride & Class embodies that spirit of bold design and legendary craftsmanship,” said Dar-rin Siver, Peterbilt General Manager and PACCAR Vice President. “Stylistically this truck deserves a place on a pedestal or in a museum, but it is every bit the work-horse that customers ex-pect from a Peterbilt.”

“It’s a head-turning trib-ute to an industry classic that keeps on innovating.”

The Pride & Class edi-tion features many unique

features both inside and out. Numerous bright ex-terior accessories and inte-rior accents provide a cus-tomized, show-truck-ready look. Insignias in the cab and on the sleeper identify the Model 389 as an exclu-sive Pride & Class edition.

“The Pride & Class edition appeals to all truck owners who take pride in their vehicles and want to make a last-ing impression,” Siver said. He added that some fleets will be using the Pride & Class edition as a reward truck for their best drivers.

• Large polished exterior sun visor, bumper and exhaust stacks;

• Polished rocker pan-els complementing the bright cowl skirts, bat-tery box, fuel tanks and trimmed mud flaps. The Model 389 Pride

& Class edition is standard with Peterbilt’s Platinum interior and features many unique accents, such as:• Arctic gray color comple-

mented by a charcoal dash top;

• Blackwood trim accents throughout, including the dash, door pads and sleeper cabinets;

• Chrome door handles, bright-bezel gauges and a special four-spoke met-al steering wheel with leather wrap;

• Bright shifter plate with Pride & Class logo and a Blackwood shifter knob. The Model 389 Pride

& Class edition can be or-dered as a day cab or with a 72- or 78-inch sleeper. b

Rice husk waste once headed for land-fills is now helping The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company produce fuel-efficient tires. Goodyear recently announced it will utilize ash left over from the burning of rice husks to produce elec-tricity as an environmen-tally friendly source of silica for use in its tires.

The company has tested silica derived from rice husk ash over the past two years at its Innovation Centre and found its impact on tire performance to be equal to traditional sources. Goodyear is negotiating with potential suppliers to purchase rice husk ash silica for use in its tires.

“The use of rice husk ash will provide Goodyear an alterna-tive source of silica while helping reduce the amount of rice husk waste being landfilled,” said Joseph Zekoski, In-terim Chief Technical

Officer. “This illustrates Goodyear’s commitment to innovation and to the environment.”

Each year, more than 700 million tons of rice is harvested worldwide, according to the Food and Agricultural Organi-zation of the United Na-tions, and disposing of the rice husks is an en-vironmental challenge. As a result, husks often are burned to generate electricity and reduce the amount of waste shipped to landfills.

Silica is mixed with rubber in tire treads to increase the rubber’s strength and help reduce rolling resistance, which improves fuel economy. It also can have a posi-tive impact on a tire’s traction on wet surfaces.

“Goodyear’s innova-tion efforts are focused on making tires more environmentally friendly – in their materials, in their performance and in the manufacturing pro-

cess,” said Zekoski. “For example, we continue to explore ways to increase the fuel efficiency of tires. We strive to help consumers keep their tires operating optimal-ly, through innovations such as Air Maintenance Technology (AMT). And we look to renewable resources, including soy bean oil, to replace pe-troleum-based materials in tires.”

Thermo King, a manu-facturer of transport tem-perature control systems for a variety of mobile ap-plications and a brand of Ingersoll Rand, enhanced its S-600M model of the Precedent S-Series line. The enhancement allows trucks to ship products with multi-temp capabil-ities-utilizing all trailer space while saving time and resources. This al-lows peace of mind for refrigerated trailer fleet operators and owner op-erators who want to re-main compliant without sacrificing performance or efficiency.

Within this platform, the Precedent S-600M meets a variety of the trucking industry’s refrigeration demands with its strong pull-down and two-speed evaporator operation for exceptional airflow while hauling perishable goods.

The enhanced multi-temp functionality the S-600M offers not only a high performance, greater-than-25 horsepower unit, but also broader avail-ability to those who want to transport various items within a single trailer.

“As the new emissions regulations have come into effect we have made a leap forward with S-600,” said Carl Breczinski, Product Manager for multi-temp trailers at Thermo King. “The S-600 allows fleets to transport products with dif-ferent temp requirements

while realizing substantial fuel savings and not having to worry about long-term emissions compliance.”

Many companies, such as United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) with brands Al-bert’s Organics and Tony’s Fine Foods have chosen the Precedent trailer refrig-eration unit platform.

“As environmental reg-ulations pressured manu-facturers to improve emis-sion outputs, Thermo King did not cut corners or offer a Band-Aid fix. They did

it right by launching the Precedent technology,” said Jeff Wismans, Nation-al Director of Transporta-tion, UNFI. “Simply put the Precedent S-600M burns less fuel and is less pollut-ing with 90 percent reduc-tion in particulate matter and 37 percent reduction in NOx.”

As the industry’s most sustainable trailer tempera-ture control platform, Prec-edent delivers double-digit fuel savings, best-in-class performance and lower life cycle costs while providing regulatory compliance. Driver turnover in the truckload sector is worsen-ing, according to recently released figures, according to the American Trucking Associations.

Truckload driver turn-over at fleets doing more than $30 million in busi-ness annually rose 11 per-cent in the second quarter of the year from the first quarter to an annual rate of 103%, according to recently released figures from the ATA. This is its highest level since the third quarter of 2012 and four percentage points above a year earlier.

Turnover at small truck-

load fleets, those with less than $30 million revenue, surged 16 points from the previous quarter to 94%, the highest level since the third quarter of 2012 and 12 percentage points more than during the same time in 2013.

ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said the shortage is “as bad as ever and is expected to get worse in the near term,” as freight volumes con-tinue to grow.

“These turnover rates show that the shortage is acute,” he said, “and if the freight economy continues to grow, it will worsen very

quickly.”The turnover at LTL

fleets was much lower, coming in at just 11% annually, one percent-age point than in the first quarter. However, there are indications even LTLs and private fleets are beginning to feel the impact of the shortage as well.

Meanwhile, as report-ed by Heavy Duty Truck-ing, the American Staff-ing Association’s new Skills Gap Index, which tracks the hardest to fill occupations in the U.S., ranks truck drivers as the third most difficult, behind occupational therapists and physical therapists.

“The ASA Skills Gap Index quantifies the se-verity of the skills short-age in America,” said Richard Wahlquist, ASA President and Chief Ex-ecutive Officer. “These new U.S. skills gap data will be used by econo-mists, journalists, gov-ernment officials, and, most important, staffing firms as they work with clients to develop work-force solutions and de-vise effective talent ac-quisition strategies.” b

Spicer high-perfor-mance chromoly axle shafts were recently intro-duced by Dana Holding Corporation (NYSE: DAN) at the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) Show, held recent-ly at the Las Vegas Conven-tion Center.

Dana’s new Spicer chromoly axle shafts are optimized for use with larger tires, and are manu-factured using SAE-4340 nickel chromoly steel for maximum strength and du-rability and are heat treated

to ensure optimal hardness throughout.

“We’ve designed these axle shafts to exceed OE standards and meet the extreme demands of off-road use,” said Bill Gry-zenia, Vice President and General Manager, Dana Aftermarket. “Not all chro-moly axle shafts are alike. Spicer chromoly axle shafts have been engineered to deliver added strength and durability and are another example of the precision engineering and manu-facturing expertise Dana

brings to performance ap-plications.”

The Spicer axle shafts are made entirely from SAE-4340 nickel chromoly steel for ideal hardness throughout the structure. The nickel provides ad-ditional toughness, while the chromium ensures high-temperature strength and resistance to abrasion. Dana also adds molybde-num to maintain a speci-fied hardenability.

Heat treatment process-es developed for the Spicer chromoly axle shafts are designed to increase core hardness to precise levels, while at the same time op-timizing case and surface hardness, to achieve maxi-mum impact strength and durability. b

Daimler Trucks North America recently an-nounced that it will offer De-troit medium duty engines beginning in 2016. The new engines, branded the Detroit DD5 and DD8, will allow DTNA to further expand De-troit engines to its complete product portfolio.

Detroit’s new DD5 and DD8 engines are a part of Daimler Trucks’ Global Excellence Strategy to have uniform production standards and processes worldwide, resulting in the most efficient, highest quality and lowest cost of ownership products in the industry. The development of the DD5 and DD8 is an-other example of Daimler’s international development effort, with global testing

and validation being un-dertaken in both Europe and the United States, and series production in Europe since 2012.

“Detroit medium duty engines will provide what no other manufacturer in North America can offer – a total vehicle solution that matches Daimler’s global engineering prow-ess with the most complete product lineup bar none in the industry,” said Martin Daum, President and Chief Executive Officer, Daim-ler Trucks North America. “The DD5 and DD8 will feature attributes that are synonymous with Detroit including exceptional fuel efficiency, lowest total cost of ownership, power, per-formance and reliability.”

The DD5 and DD8 en-gines were developed in an uncompromising manner for environmental friend-liness, economy and per-formance. DTNA’s entire product line-up, including vehicles equipped with the DD5 and DD8, will meet GHG17 standards early. The engines will be initially built and shipped from Daimler’s powertrain facility in Mannheim, Ger-many with further plans to industrialize the engines in North America in 2018.

The new DD5 and DD8 engines will be offered throughout Daimler Trucks North America’s product portfolio which includes Freightliner, Western Star, Thomas Built Buses, and Freightliner Custom Chassis vehicles. Detroit supports its complete line of products through a nationwide parts and distribution network, including 800-plus autho-rized service outlets in North America. b

Fleets and owner-oper-ators seeking to maximize profitability must consider their trucks as a critical part of their business, ac-cording to a new white pa-per recently released from Freightliner Trucks.

Available on Freightlin-erTrucks.com/RCO, “In-creasing Profitability by Lowering Your Real Cost of Ownership” takes a close look at hard and soft costs over the lifetime of a ve-hicle, and the impact those factors can have on a busi-ness.

“Maximizing profitabil-ity is no longer just about fuel efficiency and mainte-nance costs. Fleet manag-ers and owner-operators today need to incorporate a much broader set of pa-rameters to analyze the Real Cost of Ownership that contributes to running a successful business,” said Mary Aufdemberg, Direc-tor of Product Marketing for Freightliner Trucks.

Freightliner has defined the five main Real Cost of Ownership factors for on-highway customers as fuel

efficiency, connectivity, safety, quality and uptime. The white paper studies each of these categories, and incorporates insights from fleet managers, pro-fessional drivers, and in-dustry associations. The white paper also includes new information on tech-nology, driver recruitment and safety.

Aufdemberg added, “By considering real-life chal-lenges with operational costs, we are able to take a deep dive into all of the factors that can impact a business.”

With enhanced features, like an updated search/sort function, the new site makes it easier for custom-ers to find the parts and service specials that are

right for them. Members are also able to locate their closest retail location on the site, and select their preferred retail location.

The Truck Bucks re-wards program, which launched at the Mid-America Trucking Show in March, 2014, today has over 12,000 members. Through the free program, members receive discounts on parts and service au-tomatically at checkout, without the need for cou-

pons, at participating Freightliner, Western Star, Detroit and Thomas Built Buses locations.

“Through the Truck Bucks program, we reward our customers for the parts and service they purchase every day,” said Ray Addi-son, marketing communica-tions manager, DTNA After-market. “Our customers can now more easily navigate the wealth of rewards of-fered through the program. It’s another way we are providing convenience and value to our customers.”

To view the new website or to sign up for Truck Bucks, customers can visit www.MyTruckBucks.com or a DTNA retail location. b

Peterbilt’s new medium-duty Model 220 can now be spec’d with a clear frame rail package that provides up to 10 inches of addition-al frame rail space (versus the previous clear frame rail package), Peterbilt Mo-tors Company recently an-nounced.

“This new option is ideal for customers in ap-plications such as beverage delivery, street sweeping and striping, and refuse collection and packing,” said Robert Woodall, Pe-terbilt Director of Sales and Marketing. “The clear frame rail package optimiz-es chassis space to help ac-commodate installation of a wider range of work bod-ies. Additionally, this new configuration results in a

40 percent larger capacity DEF [diesel exhaust fluid] tank, improved visibility through the rear window and greater ease of service-ability.”

Peterbilt introduced the new Model 220 in March and it went into full produc-tion in July. The cabover Class 6 and 7 truck features numerous enhancements to performance, durability and the operating environ-ment. Woodall said the vehicle features enhanced manoeuvrability that short-ens the curb-to-curb turn-ing radius by 30 percent and improved braking with a standard electronic brak-ing system (EBS).

These characteristics combine with an efficient bumper-to-bumper length

for added agility while still delivering an extra 45 inches of payload area and a frame rail system that can be upfitted with bodies ranging from 16 to 28 feet.

“The Model 220 is com-pact and nimble making it ideal for applications that require high manoeu-vrability and finesse, such as street sweepers, road stripers and vacuum load-ers,” Woodall said. “This is a great truck for getting into tight spots, getting the work done and then getting back out and onto the next job.”

The cab features a com-pletely redesigned interior that was engineered to give operators superior levels of safety, productivity and comfort. b

Commercial truck driv-ers, and the fleets that em-ploy them, have a great deal to look forward to in 2015. AMTA has pur-chased two truck driving simulator machines and will offer driver training on the equipment early next year

“Large carriers recog-nize how invaluable simu-lators are for training new hires and fine-tuning the skills of experienced driv-ers,” says Brian Bell, Vice President, Operations. “The price barrier meant that access to these simu-lators was often not an af-fordable option for smaller

fleets and independent drivers.”

A truck driving simula-tor replicates the driving compartment of a typical truck and simulates real-life driving situations en-countered by drivers. The replicated driving situa-tions range from challeng-ing road conditions and collisions through to en-counters with wildlife.

“This equipment has proven itself to be a highly effective driver training tool. Drivers can rehearse challenging driving situa-tions in a safe environment or train for how to improve their response to situations

already experienced on the road. The result is efficient and cost effective driver training,” says Bell.

AMTA has purchased two simulators. A mo-bile unit will be located in AMTA’s Calgary head of-fice and a stationary unit in the association’s Ed-monton office. The mo-bile unit will be hauled to locations around the prov-ince to make it even easier for fleets to train using the equipment.

AMTA will provide ac-cess to the equipment and a trained operator who will work closely with a com-pany’s driver training team to customize computer-driven training simulations to meet the needs of indi-vidual drivers and fleets. Training modules are avail-able for both bus and truck drivers. b

Irving Oil and Special Olympics Nova Scotia host-ed the third annual World’s Largest Truck Convoy in Halifax to support Special Olympics athletes in the province. Grand Marshall Alex Debogorski, of Ice Road Truckers fame, lead the 150 rig convoy from CFB Shearwater through many popular streets in Dartmouth, Cole Harbour and Eastern Passage on Saturday, September 20th.

“We’re proud to support

Nova Scotia’s 1700 Special Olympics athletes,” said Darren Gillis, Chief Mar-keting Officer of Irving Oil. “The convoy inspires sup-port for the athletes and their families and we’re ex-cited to take part with other great community partners such as law enforcement officers and professional drivers”.

“This is truly an ex-ceptional event where the ‘trucker buddy’ spirit cel-ebrates all that truckers are

and all that athletes strive to be,” said Debogorski, who contributed his time in between filming episodes of the Emmy-nominated TV show Ice Road Truck-ers. “I encourage the pub-lic to come out and show support along the convoy route”.

“With over 150 rigs reg-istered, Irving Oil as our presenting sponsor, and a Canadian Ice Road Trucker as our Grand Marshall, this year is – without a doubt – even bigger and better,” said Mike Greek, CEO of Special Olympics Nova Scotia. “We certainly hope to reach our fundraising goal of $30,000 for our lo-cal athletes”. b

Houlton Water Co., in northern Maine, is turning to NB Power for a low-priced, reliable, and secure transmission path for ener-gy through a new interna-tional interconnect joining Woodstock and Houlton, Maine.

The company, a con-sumer-owned electric, wa-ter, and wastewater util-ity based in Houlton, has signed an agreement with NB Power to build a 25 km, 138 kV transmission line and substation. Con-struction will begin once regulatory approvals have been received. The project will be funded by Houlton Water Co. and final costs will be determined when environmental, engineer-ing and design work is complete.

“This agreement is just the latest example of re-gional partners seeing the value in New Brunswick’s low-cost energy and ex-tremely stable grid,” said Keith Cronkhite, Vice-Pres-ident of Generation and Business Development for

NB Power. “We are proud to add this connection with our new partners at Houl-ton Water Co. to our other four Maine/New England connections. While the company is not required to purchase electricity from NB Power through this new line, we are happy to pro-vide their customers with the option to take advan-tage of our low and stable generation costs through this direct connection.”

“We are pleased that Houlton Water Co. is able to collaborate with NB Power on the new trans-mission tie line project be-tween our two utilities,” said John Clark, the com-pany’s general manager. “Over the next several years, the completion of this project should result in considerable savings and value to our customers.”

“Of course, Houlton Water Co. has ensured a continued high level of reli-ability for its system under this arrangement,” said Clark. “The new agreement was made possible by U.S.

federal legislation permit-ting utilities such as ours to make advantageous grid and supply relationships to benefit our customers.”

NB Power will construct the new line and substa-tion from the Woodstock terminal to the United States/Canada border near the Houlton border cross-ing. The new infrastructure will become transmission assets of NB Power and will join the four existing international connections already in place in eastern and northern Maine.

Houlton Water Co. will seek the necessary regula-tory approvals from the Maine Public Utilities Com-mission, Maine Depart-ment of Environmental Protection, and the U.S. Department of Energy. NB Power will seek approval for the project from the provincial government and the Canadian National En-ergy Board. NB Power and the board of Houlton Water Co. have already approved the agreement.

The company is a mu-

nicipally-owned electric, water and sewer utility. It was founded in 1880 and has been serving the residents of the Town of Houlton and surrounding communities since its in-ception.

Founded in 1920, NB Power is a provin-

cial Crown corporation that provides electricity to residential and busi-ness customers across the province. The corpora-tion, which has 2,300 em-ployees, also exports elec-tricity to New England, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island

with these sales contrib-uting to rate stability in New Brunswick. Today, the New Brunswick grid is comprised of electricity generated by 68 per cent non-greenhouse-gas-emit-ting sources with a goal to get to 75 per cent by 2020. b

Industry leaders, aca-demics and government of-ficials discussed advances and challenges in Nova Scotia’s mining industry during the Geology Matters conference, held Nov. 12-13, in Halifax.

Mining adds $420 mil-lion to the provincial econ-omy every year and em-ploys 5,500 people directly and indirectly according to research by consultants Gardner Pinfold, in 2012.

“We see the mining sec-tor as one with great potential in our province,” said Natu-ral Resources Minister Zach Churchill. “Mining is critical to our provincial economy and the revenues help gov-ernment provide schools, hospitals and critical services

for Nova Scotians.”Mr. Churchill said the

government will start phas-ing in a fuel-tax rebate program for mining and quarrying vehicles, and in-troduce a revised Mineral Resources Act, in 2015.

About 250 conference attendees will hear about mineral exploration and in-novation opportunities in the province and general de-velopments in the industry.

Ross Large, a leading expert on gold deposit re-search at the University of Tasmania, was the keynote speaker and gave a half-day seminar on gold exploration.

Geoscience students also got valuable tips on finding work in the mining indus-try from speaker Patrick

McAndless, former vice-president of exploration of Imperial Metals Corp.

Mr. McAndless ad-vised students on getting their career started after graduation by describing the key qualities of suc-cessful geoscientists and a proven, step-by-step pro-cess towards employment. Students learned how to market themselves in a competitive job environ-ment, and receive coaching on effective interview and networking techniques.

David Acker, first vice-president, CIBC Woody Gundy, and Carl Weather-ell, CEO and Executive Di-rector of the Canadian Min-ing Innovation Council, also spoke at the luncheon.

The conference was held at the Westin Ho-tel. Attendees got to meet prospectors and staff from mining companies and the Department of Natural Re-sources. b
