Many years ago a nondescript couple visited the office of the president of Harvard University. The president greeted them tartly: “You will have to be brief. It is hard to believe it is September and the year is almost
three quarters over. Before we turn around, it will be the
holiday season and we will be doing Christmas music.
The planning is underway and now it is time for the prepara-
tion. The plan is for the chancel choir to start practice on
Wednesday, September the 12th at 7:00. We will be get-
ting music ready for several special times, not only
regular worship. These include communion Sundays, All
Saint's Sunday, Thanksgiving, and then the
Advent Season. Also, hopefully we will do a Hymn Fest
Sunday, so start thinking of your favorite hymn.
The choir is always open to new voices and if you have ever
thought about singing in the choir, please let me know, or
just show up for practice. Also, if you attend the 8:30 ser-
vice and would be interested in singing in the choir, I am
looking to form a choir that only sings at the 8:30 service.
Please let me know as soon as possible, if this is an interest
for you.
The hymn for this month is "In the Garden". The author of
this hymn, C. Austin Miles, felt that meditating on scrip-
ture involves using your imagination. Instead of just read-
ing a passage, you read it, close your eyes, and visualize the
scene, maybe even putting yourself in the picture. He began
writing gospel songs and even became an editor of hymnals
and songbooks. His hobby was photography, and when he
would be in the dark room developing his photographs,
he would read his Bible. In March 1912, while waiting for
film to develop, he opened his Bible to his favorite chapter--
John 20, the story of the first Easter. As he pictured the
scene of that morning, he could feel every movement.
Under the inspiration of this vision, he wrote as quickly as
he could, and the poem appeared. Later the same evening
he wrote the music. We should all be thankful for such
talent.

On Sunday, August 19th, the youth and children gathered at Margaret Payne’s home for a pool party and cook-out. There were around 15 of our young people there along with about the same number of adults. Everyone had lots of fun and ate good food. Many thanks to Margaret for sharing her home, to Chuck and Steve (and others) for preparing the food, and to Michael and Albert for the wonderful homemade ice cream. Starting on September 9th, the regular meetings of the youth and children will start. We will continue to have lots of fun, while learning more about each other, and exploring our faith. Please come and bring your friends. Melody Evans
Evangelism Reaching Out to Others
Several of the programs we have been working on to get in place are now functioning. We have the Pastor/Congregation Prayer Program in place which you will read about. The visitation of the sick in the hospital, and those at home with brief sicknesses is being addressed by the YOUNG AT HEART Sunday School class. Those who are limited in their ability to get out as they wish and miss the opportunity to attend activities at church are being visited and offered communion by our Home Visitation Team. The members of the team are Catherine Smith, Becky Cassell, Jim Bond, Grace Eckstorm, Jean Frye, Leslie Wilkins, Linda Eichenbaum, Leslie Wilkins, Gerry Ferguson, Sandra Davis, Debbie Snow, Joyce Davis and Rose Wagoner. A visit when you are stuck at home is always a blessing. There are several other outreaches in the plan-ning stage which we hope will be in operation very soon. And, as chair, I wish to give a BIG THANKS to my committee who are working so hard to reach out to others in Christian Love. They are Gerry Ferguson, Carolyn Marker, Fran VanHousen, Becky Cassell, Mahala Pearsall, Catherine Smith, Emily Sharp, Jim Bond, Ed Daniel and Pastor Michael Ritter Everyone is welcome to come join us, and mem-bers are needed to carry out the programs being planned. We meet on the fourth Tuesday of every month in the Fellowship Hall at 9:30 a.m.

Stewardship is lived out in: - living and telling the Good News - sharing with God in seeking justice, peace, and the integrity of creation in an interdependent uni-verse. - wisely employing God-given human resources, abilities and relationships - sharing the material resources we hold and giv-ing them in service, justice and compassion - providing for future generations - sharing in the life, worship and responsible stew-ardship of the Church and of its mission. Both for the individual and for the community, stewardship is a joyful act for the sake of God's world! (Excerpt from "Christian Stewards, Stewards of Ourselves")
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Change is an often used word in the English language. It has French and Latin origins, meaning to alter or exchange.
We change a baby, we have loose change in our pocket, we change seats with someone, we change our clothes. None of
these has a threatening sort of meaning. Yet somehow when change involves something in the church, we, especially those
of us who are getting along in years, often put on our fighting gear and go at it.
Let’s think about this. First of all, the church, meaning those who follow Christ, has always been about change. We are
new creatures in Christ. We rise from baptismal waters to walk in newness of life. 1st Corinthians 15:51 tells us that in the
last days we shall all be changed. As Methodists we are the result of many changes, from the Reformation through the new
ideas of John Wesley to the Methodist Episcopal Church to today’s United Methodist Church. A big change happened
when women could enter the ministry. Also, we Methodists have always been known for our pastors moving around,
whether back in the days of the circuit riders or the regular reassignments today. When I was growing up, it seemed etched
in stone that we’d change pastors every four years.
Those changes pertain to the larger picture either of theology or church organization, and we’ve accepted them, al-
though sometimes begrudgingly, pretty well. When changes come in our local body of Christ, our Church, however, we
take changes a lot more personally. I have a book written in 1943 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the church
in which I was baptized as an infant, Union Station Methodist in Richmond, Va., which, by the way, no longer exists. Be-
cause of changing neighborhood demographics, it merged with a church which lost their building in a fire and became a
new entity across town. In the history of that church there is one incident reported of a change the tobacco chewing men
of the congregation didn’t like—the removal of cuspidors from the building. But the changes that drew the most ire and
suspicion were those involving the music. In 1850 some old codgers said if an organ was brought into the church, they
would throw it out the window. When a choir was organized, it was feared there would be “operatic warbling” if the
choice of music was left up to the singers and their director.
So here we are at Trinity many years later, and the fear of change still seems alive and well. Perhaps it’s because we’ve
had so many to deal with in the past year or so. We loved Steve, and still do; but even though we knew he wouldn’t stay
forever, the circumstances of his reassignment took us by surprise. And we didn’t like that change one bit. When Rev. Ed
stepped in for the interim he brought his own style with him, which was a change from Steve’s quiet ways. Yet he did a
commendable job and we were so thankful for his spirit and hard work. Then came Michael with all his energy and commit-
ment to shake us up a little (or a lot) and lead us in new directions. While we’ve noticed changes to the order of worship
and such, I feel that he will always listen to our reason for wanting to do something the “old way.” That, however, re-
quires talking to him personally instead of just grumbling to others about it. I believe a visit to the church when he is in his
office will show you he has an open door and an open mind.
As for any perceived changes to our music, to quote a nationally known Baptist minister of music, “I choose such a vari-
ety of music that I offend everyone in the congregation at least once a month.” Please keep your mind and heart open and
listen to the message, no matter what type of music it is. I suspect that years ago people were outraged when the hymns
changed from ones such as “O God Our Help in Ages Past” to “Bringing in the Sheaves.” Then there's the matter of the choir not wearing robes for the summer, which has brought out strong opinions in both choir and congregation. We
recognize we look better when dressed uniformly, but the robes are thick polyester and hold in the heat. With the air conditioning somewhat unpre-
dictable, on the days the inside temperature can't be brought down, some members experience health problems from becoming overheated. And
which is more distracting, the robed choir members vigorously fanning themselves throughout the service or seeing them in normal summer attire?
In closing, I hope I’ve given you some things to consider. Change in every aspect of our life, including the church, is
inevitable. We change for the better as we follow Jesus more closely. We’ve changed our thinking about the role of women
in the church. Church music has changed. New programs have been and will be added. A stagnant church is a dying
church, and once it dies it can no longer go out into the world to reach those in need both materially and spiritually. As
long as Trinity is biblically sound and we as the body of Christ, to paraphrase Micah 6:8, show justice in our actions, love
mercy, and walk humbly with our God, I pray you will embrace change!
In Christ,
Carolyn Brittain
Just a reminder that Trinity’s Prayer Shawl Ministry is
still going strong! We are always in need of more knitters and
crotchetier.
We will now be blessing the shawls on the 5th Sunday—
which means 4 times a year. We will put a reminder notice in
the Sunday bulletin the week prior to the blessing date.
If anyone is interested in taking part of this ministry
there are patterns for both knit and crochet or you can use
your own pattern. Making these shawls is a blessing for those
who make them and, as we’ve been told many times, a bless-
ing for those who receive them. If there are any questions
On Sunday, September 16th we will be extending an invitation to those of you who have “thought about it” and those who would now like to transfer their membership to Trinity. While you may join at any time, some people feel more comfortable joining as a group.
If this is something you are interested in doing then please contact Pastor Ritter or Sandra in the church office to let us know.
CONCERT SERIES STARTS UP AGAIN Beginning Sunday Sept 23rd
at 6:30 pm
Once again this year we will have an opportunity to come together for a major blessing. Over the years we have had our spirits lifted high by many talented people. There will be everything from six piece brass groups to our own diverse quartet. We are starting this season with our very own Kelvin Smith on Sunday Sept 23rd at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary of the church. Kelvin not only sings and plays piano in worship at Trinity, he is also an extremely gifted actor who works throughout the year with the theater group on Main Street in Conway. You have not truly heard Kelvin until you hear him in concert. His warm, up close and personal style along with his spirituality will surely give all who attend an evening to remember. All concerts are free and all are welcome. This is a wonderful time for those who attend our church at dif-ferent times on Sunday to fellowship together. It is also a great time to bring a friend, maybe someone who is un-churched and seeking. For more info please call the church office or Rev. Ed at 843- 421-7257
Do you know why you believe what you believe? Is it Scrip-
tural, was it passed down in your family from your Great
Grandma, or do you believe it because it makes you "feel
good"?
Join us in exploring the great doctrinal truths on grace,
faith, and justification found in the book of Romans.
No need to purchase a study guide, just bring your Bible,
pen and paper if you want to take notes. Frank Fussell will
be teaching chapter by chapter and is very thorough. Just
show up in the sanctuary, Monday, September10 at
10:30 am.
A Very Special Thank You to My Pastor
and My Church Family
Words cannot begin to express my grate-
fulness for all of your love and support during the
time of my mother’s passing. The services that you
rendered to me and my family, the food, the flowers,
the cards and the love is just overwhelming.
To my pastor Michael, Sandra, Margaret, Albert,
Melody, Kelvin, Fran, Bruce, Tera Ann, Frances,
Trudy, Edward, Jo, Barbara Irvin, Bob & Laurie and
anyone that I may have missed, please forgive me.
To all of you my heart is filled with joy due to your
kindness and love.
I have no idea of how anyone could get through
something like this without a church family. Thank
God I will never have to know because I have you.
Many blessing and bundles of love, Ed and family
THANK YOU!
Dear Friends,
George, Bill and I want to thank you for your
cards, calls and concern for our son, Bill, at the
time of his heart attack. Your expressions of
love and caring were a source of strength for us
and we are so grateful.
Thankfully, Bill is now in cardiac rehab and
doing well. We are so blest! Again, thank you,
dear friends.
In Christian Love,
George and Emily Sharp

Greene building will be starting a study of “A LIVING FAITH” and how it applies to us today. Or you may join the Young At Heart class upstairs in the library which will be exploring “Matthew". Come and expand your knowledge of God’s word as it applies to us today.
