11 Praise the Lord! I will givethanks to the Lord with my whole heart, inthe company of the upright, in the congre-gation. 22 Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them. 33 Full of honor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever. 44 He has gained renown by his wonderfuldeeds; the Lord is gracious and merciful. 55 He provides food for those who fearhim; he is ever mindful of his covenant.66 He has shown his people the power ofhis works, in giving them the heritage ofthe nations. 77 The works of his hands arefaithful and just; all his precepts are trust-worthy. 88 They are established forever andever, to be performed with faithfulness anduprightness. 99 He sent redemption to hispeople; he has commanded his covenantforever. Holy and awesome is his name.1100 The fear of the Lord is the beginning ofwisdom; all those who practice it have agood understanding. His praise enduresforever.

11 Praise the Lord! Happy are thosewho fear the Lord, who greatly delight inhis commandments. 22 Their descendantswill be mighty in the land; the generationof the upright will be blessed. 33 Wealthand riches are in their houses, and theirrighteousness endures forever. 44 They risein the darkness as a light for the upright;they are gracious, merciful, and righteous.55 It is well with those who deal generouslyand lend, who conduct their affairs withjustice. 66 For the righteous will never bemoved; they will be remembered forever.77 They are not afraid of evil tidings; theirhearts are firm, secure in the Lord. 88Their hearts are steady, they will not beafraid; in the end they will look in triumphon their foes. 99 They have distributedfreely, they have given to the poor; theirrighteousness endures forever; their horn isexalted in honor. 1100 The wicked see itand are angry; they gnash their teeth andmelt away; the desire of the wicked comesto nothing.

LLEENNTTEENN SSEERRIIEESS 22000066During this Lenten Season as many members of the congregation are praying the
daily prayer (engaging in the spiritual exercise) of Honest Examination, RelationalRestoration and Total Transformation (Get the sermons from Ash Wednesday to join inwith us.), I invite you to join with me in the sermonic investigation of the songs sung bythe people of faith during this season of the year.
We will be looking at the songs Jesus sang during the pre-Passover and Passoverseason as we move toward Holy Week. The twelve-part series is based upon the idea putforth in the hymn "God Leads His Dear Children Along." In the chorus of that hymn, thewriter says:
Some through the water,Some through the flood,Some through the fire;
But all through the bloodSome through great sorrows,
BBuutt GGoodd ggiivveess aa ssoonnggIn the night season
And all the day long.
The hymn is saying that GGoodd ggiivveess aa ssoonngg in the night season. The people of faithwere given a song by God in "the night season" of their slavery in Egypt. That is whenthe songs we will be looking at were written and sung.
We are in a night season as Africans living in Diaspora in 21st century America, but God gives us a song too. Join me as we look sermonically at the similarities and dif-ferences between the settings which produced these songs and the settings in which "oursongs" are sung. Place your order for the entire 12-part series today.
Congress has started work on next year’s federal budget FY 2007. Thefirst step in the process is the budget resolution, an outline of federal spending forthe next year. The budget resolution sets the total dollars to be available for allthe services funded by the federal government, and also sets tax levels (includingtax cuts, if they so choose). The budget resolution does not make decisionsabout funding levels for individual services, but if the funding is too low, it willforce program cuts later on.
As early as this past week (March 13th), the full Senate may have taken upits version of the budget resolution, with the House expected to take it up early inApril. There is currently a stalemate among House Republicans on how deep tocut spending, or whether to force more spending cuts on vital programs likeMedicare at all this year.
It is extremely important that we as advocates tell our members ofCongress not to set the funding totals so low that harmful cuts are inevitable, andnot to include unfair and unaffordable tax cuts. If we allow Congress to short-change the budget now, later on, the only way to increase funding for one impor-tant service will be to cut another one - the old trick of robbing Peter to pay Paul.
“Rather than defining ‘the human’ as one eternal or inviolableessence, Hopkins looks to the multiple and conflicting notionsof the human in contemporary thought, and particularly three
key variables: culture, self and race.”Cornel West, University Professor of Religion, Princeton University
There is something truly strange about giving. Whatever we give really comes back to us,often four-fold. Give love and it comes back to you. Give friendship and your list offriends grows ever longer. Give service and, the first thing you know, someone wants toacknowledge your service publicly. Give money to worthy causes, especially God’schurch, and the blessings come flooding over us.
George Burba once wrote: “There is something about giving that blesses us. Those whogive most, have most left. Give and – somewhere, from out of the clouds, or from thesacred depths of human hearts – a melody divine will reach your ears, and gladden allyour days upon the earth.”
Norman Vincent Peale used to say that he would be very hesitant to stop giving gener-ously. He said that he had received so much satisfaction from giving that he would notwant the joy he had reaped to come to an end.
“Give,” we are told, “and it will be given to you...” Strange, but true, very true.

Nowhere in Jesus’ ministry is the possibility of resurrection illustrated more vividly thanin the story of a wild man who was living in a graveyard near the Sea of Galilee. (Mark5:1-20) The story portrays in stark terms the resurrection of a person, who had not beenphysically dead but psychologically dead, unable to participate in any civilized living. Heis described as being so possessed by a legion of demons that he went around naked, unable to be restrained and ranting at anyone who came near. After Jesus healed him, theman was calm and in his right mind.
Let’s move the story to surroundings more typical of the place where people find them-selves today. Retain the imagery; retain the sense of power that Jesus has in healing, butmove out of the physical graveyard into some of the dead and troubled places, wherecontemporary demons hold people captive, away from creative and satisfying living.Resurrection can be found here, too.
Amidst the multitude of demands in a world riddled with false values and competing ide-ologies, a person of faith can easily be driven to distraction. How can people, who seelife as God’s gift to us, cope with those who are out to attain only wealth and power, regardless of the cost to their own integrity? How difficult it is to be kind and understand-ing, when competition reigns supreme in our society and economy! How can we bewhole people and resist the brokenness that surrounds us?
We need Jesus. We cannot do it alone. Christ’s Spirit can help us to see the demons forwhat they are. With the vision of Jesus Christ before us, we can rise above the frantic“rat-race” and begin a journey into wholeness. We can find resurrection.
