1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live

when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the

spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them

at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature[1] and following its desires and

thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. 4 But because of his great

love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were

dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with

Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in

the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his

Pentecost

Today is the “Birthday of the Church.”Today is fifty days after the Passovercelebration that Jesus and His Disciplesengaged in. It was the last time that He andthey would celebrate together that tremendousremembrance of God’s mighty act in history.

The prefix “Pente” means 5 (as inpentagon and pentateuch). Pentecost is thecelebration that the Jewish community engagedin fifty days after Passover ever since the veryfirst Passover as recorded in the Book ofExodus (Exodus 12).

For the Jewish community and theJewish faith, the number seven is a sacrednumber. It is a holy number. It is God’snumber. It is also known as the “PerfectNumber.”

7 X 7 equals 49. The Feast of Weeksis also another name given to this holy daycalled Pentecost! There are seven days in aweek and seven weeks means the number ofperfection and the number of completion.

It was on this special holy day that hadbeen celebrated for over a thousand years, thatthe Jewish church was gathered together inJerusalem (the Holy City) to celebrate yetanother very sacred day on the Jewish calendar.Today was the first Pentecost following theDeath, Burial and Resurrection of Jesus.

Today was the first Pentecost followingthe celebration of the Passover in the “Upper

Room” where Jesus took bread and broke it (following the celebration of the Passover) toinstitute the Lord’s Super.

Today (around 37 C.E.) when theJewish community and the followers of Jesusgathered to celebrate Pentecost, the Holy Spiritcame and gave birth to the Christian Church!The Spirit of God broke out and broke loose insome new and exciting ways and the Jews wholived in the Diaspora heard Galileans speakingin languages that they had never studied inschool!

They heard Galileans speaking in thelanguages that they had learned as toddlers intheir Diasporic homes. Because of the powerof the Holy Spirit, the Galileans were able tospeak in languages that even they did notunderstand. They spoke about the awesomeacts of God in foreign languages they had neverspoken before (or since)!

They spoke about the wondrous deedsof God. They spoke about all the things thatGod had done and it caused amazement forthose who had gathered to celebrate Pentecost.

The “Tongues of Fires” and the color“Red” are the signs and symbols of this day.Celebrate this day with the remembrance ofwhat happened on the first Pentecost Sundayafter the Lord’s Resurrection.

Celebrate this day with the assurancethat God still speaks through the servants ofGod to let the people of God know that God isstill God!

For Dignity, For Peace, ForReconciliation

Over the past couple of months, manyfriends and supporters of The InterfaithAlliance have written to us to express concernover the violence in Iraq. In recent weeks, thedisturbing images coming out of Iraq havegrown overwhelming and impossible to justlabel as the consequences of war. Indeed, they

are images that shook this nation to its core. In response to the troubling recent

events, The Interfaith Alliance, the nation’slargest interfaith organization, has launchedLights for Human Dignity(http://www.lightsfordignity.org ), a faith-based, grassroots campaign to demonstrate tothe nation and to the world that people of faithand goodwill are watching the catastrophicevents overseas with an eye toward animmediate and peaceful resolution.



On the birthday of the Church, theChristians were under the oppression of theRoman Empire. The Christians were killed bythe Romans. The Christians were mutilated bythe Romans.

The Christians were abused by theiroppressors just like the pictures that you areseeing on the Internet and the pictures that themedia is now exposing in terms of theoppressed being held at the will of theconquering army and having to undergo anyand everything that the soldiers in that armychoose to do to them!

This is what is going on in your Bible!Roman soldiers raped Jewish women. Romansoldiers sodomized Jewish men. Occupyingarmies are like that! Please don’t make theBible some sort of “fairytale” story thatsanitizes and mythologizes the Word of God.

What you are seeing on your televisionscreens today is what happened to the people inthe Word of God! The power of Pentecost,however, shows that there is a power that ismightier than the Roman Empire. That Poweris more awesome than George W. Bush.

That Power defeated segregation. ThatPower defeated Apartheid. That Powerdefeated chattel slavery. That Power defeatedthe Roman Empire back in the opening days ofthe history of the Christian Church; and thatsame Power is available to you today!

Celebrate Pentecost and celebrateGod’s acts of awesome greatness in your midst.

Lights for Human Dignity Recent images from Iraq have

disclosed actions that are horrific anddehumanizing. Memorial Day

The country is getting ready tocelebrate “Memorial Day.” On Memorial Day,citizens of the United States stop and“remember” the men and women who serve inour armed forces and who gave their livesfighting in the various wars that our country haswaged.

We pause to remember them. Wepause to honor them. We pause to thank Godfor them and we pause to praise God for theirdedication and their faithfulness.

On this Memorial Day, I especiallywant you to stop and remember the Africanmilitary persons who fought for their freedom.Remember the Africans who fought on the sideof the United States Government as the U.S.battled England in 1776. Remember theAfricans who fled to freedom so they couldfight for the British because America wasdetermined to keep them as slaves!

Remember the African soldiers whofought against the British for their freedom inGhana! Remember Queen Yaa Asantewaa.Remember Shaka Zulu and his soldiers whofought against the Europeans trying to take over

South Africa. Remember the AfricanAmericans who were segregated in the UnitedStates Armed Forces up until Harry Trumansigned an order of desegregation.

Remember the African Americansoldiers who gave their lives in World War I.But then, stop and remember the AfricanAmerican soldiers who fought in World War Iand who came home and could not live wherethey wanted to, sit where they wanted to, eatwhere they wanted to or worship where theywanted to. They were still black in America!

Remember the African Americansoldiers who gave their lives fighting forfreedom here in this country. The veteransfrom World War I were attacked by whiteracists here in the states because they wereblack. The veterans of World War II were alsoattacked by white racists because they wereblack. Remember them on this Memorial Day.

Remember the African AmericanArmed Forces personnel who gave their lives inthe Korean War and in the Vietnam War.Remember the African American soldiers whowere lied to by our government concerning theVietnam War, the Persian Gulf War and Bush’sWar against Iraq!

NAACP PROTEST

On the day that my father-in-law died,April 19th, the National Association for theAdvancement of Colored People issued a pressstatement concerning the Nielsen’s proposedmethod of counting African American andHispanic television viewers.

The NAACP joined New York SenatorHillary Rodham Clinton and others inprotesting Nielsen Media Research’s plan tochange the way it counts TV viewers in thestate of New York!

The proposed plan will misrepresentthe numbers of African American and Hispanicviewers. The new plan will undercountminority viewership and will harm the future ofprogramming aimed specifically at AfricanAmericans and Latino audiences.

At issue are the plans by Nielsen toadopt a new method of counting the TVviewers. Their new method is called the LocalPeople Meters (LPM’s). Instead of the paperdiaries used by viewers presently to determinewhat people are watching on TV, Nielsen is

going to use Local People Meters. The Local People Meters operate by

having members of the household press abutton on the device to register when and whatthey are watching on TV. NAACP President,Kweisi Mfume, urged Nielsen to delay theintroduction of the Local People Meters ““uunnttiillssuucchh ttiimmee aass NNiieellsseenn ccaann aaddeeqquuaatteellyyddeemmoonnssttrraattee tthhaatt LLMMPP’’ss wwiillll aaccccuurraatteellyy ccoouunnttaallll vviieewweerrss..””

Nielsen has put its plan to install theLPM’s in New York on hold. Nielsen has saidto Chicago, however, that they will install thisnew method for counting African Americansand Hispanics whether we like it or not!

A coalition of New York leaders andChicago Citizens have formed an organizationcalled, ““DDoonn’’tt CCoouunntt UUss OOuutt//QQuueerreemmooss SSeerrCCoonnttaaddooss..”” This new organization isdetermined to stop Nielsen from undercountingminority viewers in New York City and inChicago.

New York State Chairperson, HazelDukes, said that “Nielsen may be a monopoly,but no corporation is above publicaccountability. This coalition of concerned

Graduate Recognition Sunday!

Most of our new members do not knowthat we honor, recognize and give “shout-outs”to all of our graduates on the second Sunday inJune. Because so many members don’t knowthat, they have not yet sent in their names andthe schools from which they are graduating sothat they can be recognized on graduate Sunday.

I am urging you today to please submiteither your name or the names of persons inyour family who have finished elementaryschool, middle school, high school, college, orgraduate school.

Submit their names to the church officeto the attention of the “Graduate RecognitionSunday Committee.”We don’t want any member’s name left off ofthe program and we don’t want any “surprises”on the day of the program! All of our graduatesare asked to be here in the Sanctuary on Sunday,June 13th in order that we might honor you andsay to God that we thank God for God’s giftsgiven to you as you complete this “milestone” inyour educational journey.

African Americans and Hispanic viewers hasbeen formed to make sure that Nielsen nolonger continues to undercount minorityviewers.

“We want Nielsen, especially itsleadership, to hear us when we say ‘Don’tCount Us Out.’”

The coalition in Chicago wants Nielsento delay the introduction of the Local PeopleMeters in the Chicago market until Nielsen candetermine the problems with the system, fix theproblem and stop the undercounting that iscurrently existing. Nielsen has agreed to dothat in New York. They have not agreed to dothat in Chicago!

What does that have to do with you?

Nielson’s decision demonstrates a greatinsensitivity to the African American andHispanic communities and it will result in theshows that African Americans and Hispanicswatch being taken off the air for poor ratings.

If advertisers believe no one iswatching those shows, they won’t buy ads andthe shows will be cancelled. That will putAfrican American and Hispanic actors, writers,producers and directors out of work. That iswhat it has to do with you!

The American government historically andcurrently has been marked what Dr. MarimbaAni calls “Rhetorical Ethic.” Rhetorical Ethicaccording to Dr. Ani is defined as: Culturallystructured European hypocrisy. It is astatement framed in terms of acceptable moralbehavior towards others that is meant forrhetorical purposes only. Its purpose is todisarm intended victims of European culturaland political imperialism. It is meant for“export” only. It is not intended to havesignificance within the culture. Its essence isits deceptive effect in the service of Europeanpower.

When we think about the history of thiscountry with respect to its imperialisticactions, such as stealing of various lands,mistreatment of people, and total disregard anddisrespect for other people and cultures, wesee how acutely accurate Dr. Ani’s descriptionis. However, if we move from the past to thepresent, we will continue to see how accurateher analysis is, especially with regard to thiscurrent Presidential administration. Thisadministration has clearly shown its rhetoricalethical characteristics by stealing elections,overthrowing a democratically electedpresident in Haiti, and now with the prisonscandal in Abu Gharib.

This Resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenuehas known for approximately 2 years that hisadministration has been pushing policies andpractices that qualify as war crimes. As earlyas January 25, 2002, the Resident Bush waswarned by White House counsel that there wasa “threat of domestic criminal prosecutionunder the War Crimes Act.” Bush wasadvised to invent a legal technicality thatwould reduce the chance of prosecution. Thislegal technicality would allow Bush to declaredetainees in the war on terror to be outside ofthe strictures included in the agreements putforth by the Geneva Conventions, whichgovern the rules of engagement. When lawsare in the way of European power, they findways to use laws as “export only,” meaningthe laws are used to govern others, but notthemselves—rhetorical ethic.

Take this a step further. The War Crimes Act,which was passed in Congress in 1996provides for the criminal prosecution ofAmericans for actions that violate the rights ofprisoners and civilians by the GenevaConventions, and for outrages on personaldignity. This is the binding law of the land.However, this law appears to be subject to therhetorical ethic of Resident Bush. We haveseen horrid photos and videos over the pastfew weeks of the American treatment of

civilians and soldiers in Iraq. George Bushcalls this scandal “failures of character” ofAmerican soldiers. However, based on theadvice of White House counsel in January of2002 when the armed forces were only inAfghanistan, it becomes clear that thisAdministration always planned on usingtorture tactics in interrogation beyondAfghanistan. White House counsel stated inhis advice to the President to “hold openoptions for future conflicts.” Bush knew andknows about the tortuous acts of the soldiers,and had the pictures not come out, he and hisadministration would still be condoning theacts of torture on the Iraqi people.

Because the demon of white supremacy ismore concerned with possessing a disablingpower than respect of people, it finds ways toimplement its supremacist practices on peopleregardless of who it affects negatively, as longas it is does not disserve white supremacy.

Rhetorical ethic is the hypocriticalexercise of white supremacy used to servicethe same. It sets laws that are only to beadhered to by others. But if those laws orstructures get in the way of white supremacistactions of power, they will not apply. Such isthe history and current state of this Americangovernment.
