not made, of one being with the Father. Th rough him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucifi ed under Pontius Pilate; he suff ered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorifi ed. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

2. I bind this day to me forever, By power of faith, Christ’s incarnation, His baptism in the Jordan River, His cross of death for my salvation, His bursting from the spiced tomb, His riding up the heavenly way, His coming at the day of doom, I bind unto myself today.

5. Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me.

Th e Great Th anksgiving Presider Th e Lord be with you.All And also with you.

Presider Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.All It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Presider Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth; we give you thanks and praise, because, in the mystery you disclose to us, you reveal your glory as the glory of your Son and the Holy Spirit: three persons equal in majesty, undivided in splendour, yet one Lord, one God, ever to be adored in your everlasting glory. Th erefore with all the company of heaven we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name.

Sanctus Choir Healey Willan

Presider We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made fl esh, Jesus your Son.

For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

Page 9: Trinity Sunday - Home - Christ Church Cathedral … · Introit Praise to the Trinity, ... the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. ... We believe in one holy catholic

9

On the night he was handed over to suff ering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Th erefore, Father, according to his command,

All we remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory;

Presider and we off er our sacrifi ce of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifi ce, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctifi ed by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the fi rstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. All Amen.

Share the GiftsIf you know the brokenness of life, its fractures within and its division without, then you have participated in the broken body of Christ and you are invited to share in the breaking of bread. If you desire to know the love of God that overcomes indiff erence and despair, if you desire the

reconciliation that overcomes estrangement and alienation then you are invited to share the cup of the new covenant. Th e bread is received in the open palm. It is usual Anglican practice to drink the wine from the common cup. If you wish to dip bread in the wine, extend one hand for a wafer. Both wine and unfermented grape juice are served, grape juice is administered from the copper chalice. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request in the East alcove.

Prayer and Laying-on of Hands for HealingWe invite those wishing particular prayer for themselves or on behalf of someone else, or to share in a prayer

of thanksgiving for blessings received, to come to the front of the line to receive the bread and wine. Immediately after receiving, go to the prayer station. Give your fi rst name and in a low voice briefl y state your prayer need. Th e prayer team will lay hands gently on your shoulders and after a short silence, they will pray quietly for you. While the communion is being administered, we respectfully ask that you keep the silence — this is a time for quiet prayer and meditation.

Breaking of the BreadPresider “I am the bread of life,” says the Lord. “Whoever comes to me will never be hungry; whoever believes in me will never thirst.”All Taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are they who trust in him!

Presider Th e gifts of God for the people of God.All Th anks be to God.

During Communion As truly as God is our Father Text: Julian of Norwich, 1342-1416 Music: William Mathias, 1934 -1992

As truly as God is our Father, so just as truly is he our Mother. In our Father, God Almighty, we have our being; in our merciful Mother we are remade and restored. Our fragmented lives are knit together. And by giving and yielding ourselves, through grace, to the Holy Spirit we are made whole. It is I, the strength and goodness of Fatherhood. It is I, the wisdom of Motherhood. It is I, the light and grace of holy love. It is I, the Trinity, it is I, the unity. I am the sovereign goodness in all things. It is I who teach you to love. It is I who teach you to desire. It is I who am the reward of all true desiring. All shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well. Amen.

June 12th, 2016 saw our communities rocked by the Pulse Nightclub shootings that took the lives of 49 victims, the vast majority of whom were LGBTQ and Latinx. Th e massacre was the result of racism, trans-phobia, biphobia, and homophobia. We cannot sepa-rate the various identities of those at the Pulse Night-club, just as we cannot separate the lived experiences of queer and trans folk here in British Columbia. One informs the other. Children’s Church…happens Sunday morning for children ages 1-4, 5-8 and 9-12. We have three age groups to better meet the learning needs (focus, energy, etc) of all children from 1-12. We begin downstairs at 10:30 (parents are wel-come to drop children off from 10:15 or so onwards), and rejoin their parents and the whole community for the Eucharist.

Th e youngest group (1-4) meets in the Lounge for Pre-School Church with consistent staff who provide a short learning program, creative work and lots of one-on-one time.

Th e older two groups (5-8 and 9-12) participate in ei-ther an interactive spiritual practices program in the Parish hall, or Godly Play in the new Godly Play space. Groups alternate between programs each week.

Godly Play is a Montessori-based faith formation pro-gram that engages the children in Biblical and litur-gical stories, making-meaning, creativity and prayer while immersed in a supportive community of peers and adults.

Spiritual Practices is a learning program that provides an introduction to diff erent faith practices that help children to live out our vision Open Doors, Open Hearts, Open Minds in age-appropriate ways.

Children’s Church Today1-4 year olds are in the Lounge for Pre-School Church. Th is program is much more suited to 3 and 4 year olds, so we encourage parents to bring pre-schoolers to the Lounge rather than joining Children’s Church, which is geared to older children.

Th e 5-8 group will be doing spiritual practices, and will be meeting in the parish hall and baking com-munion bread.

Th e 9-12 group is in the Godly Play room hear-ing the story of the Good Shepherd and the World Communion.

Youth ProgramsYouth Groups meet Friday nights at the church (or another location) from 6-9pm, dinner is provided and a donation towards cost is always appreciated. Junior Youth is for Grades 4-7 and Senior Youth is for Grades 8-12. Junior youth will meet next Friday June 16th from 6-9pm.

Sacred Earth CampAugust 6-18 at Southlands Heritage Farm, this camp is a two-week environmental leadership program for youth and young adults to learn about their bio-re-gion, climate justice on Coast Salish Territories and grow practical and spiritual tools for change. Th e camp is part of the Salal and Cedar Watershed Dis-cipleship Community of the diocese. Several youth from the Cathedral attended last year. Ask Anne or check out salalandcedar.com to learn more.

Camp ArtabanCamps Artaban is open and running camps from July 3rd-31st this summer, with camps for grades 3-12, as well as a Family Camp week. Learn more at campartaban.com.

Confi rmation Class Next YearIs your child of the age where they might be interest-ed and ready for confi rmation next year? If you’re not sure, come talk to Anne! Planning for the curriculum will happen throughout the summer, and classes will be starting early fall.

18 Trinity Sunday | June 11, 2017

Notes from Andrew Stephens-RennieJune 11, 2017

Parishioners distributed sandwiches, coff ee, conversa-tion and free smiles. Staff met with encouraging city planners. Hundreds gathered to celebrate the life, and mourn the death of a political icon. Groups gath-ered to support one another through life’s challenges. Conversations were shared. Hospitality was extended. Relationships were built, nurtured, and renewed. All this (and more!) took place on an ordinary Wednesday morning at Christ Church Cathedral.

Open doors, hearts, and minds. It’s what this Cathe-dral community is about. It all begins with Christ’s hospitality as the host at the altar. It ripples forth from there. At the heart of the church’s story is the table that breaks down the barriers that needlessly divide us. It’s the table where people who have no business being to-gether are invited to come together, to have encounter with one another, and to leave changed.

And this week, in addition to celebrating Trinity Sun-day, the Cathedral also has opportunity to participate in what has been dubbed One City, One Message. Th e same sermon theme will be preached in over one hun-dred fi fty Vancouver area churches this Sunday.

Th e theme: welcoming the stranger.

Th e idea was originally suggested by City Council-lor Andrea Reimer, and quickly taken up by many church leaders at the Vancouver City Summit last fall. Th e Summit includes church leaders representing Anglican, Christian Reformed, Evangelical, Lutheran, Roman Catholic, United, and other streams of Chris-tian faith. To see so many churches coming together around one idea is incredibly exciting.

In a fear-based political climate that breeds suspicion of outsiders, and in response to Franklin Graham’s re-cent crusade in Vancouver, the One Message move-ment gives opportunity for Christian communities to proclaim and embody a message of inclusion and lov-ing welcome.

I don’t often step back to refl ect on the many ways in which the Cathedral extends Christ’s hospitality to the world. And yet, sitting in my offi ce on Wednesday morning after meetings with city staff who continue to encourage us in the direction set by the volunteer leaders of the Maundy Café, I found myself in a refl ec-tive space.

As Rupert Lang’s Kontakion soared above my head from the funeral above, I refl ected on the way in which we are transformed by our encounters with one an-other. I was reminded of the way in which conversa-tions with strangers have expanded my own sense of connection and connectedness. I was reminded of how interactions with people unlike me have expanded my response to the question: “who is my neighbour?” and challenged me to draw the circle wider still.

Finally, I was reminded of Alisdair’s refl ections a few weeks back on the notion of “Friendship Leadership.” His words have stuck with me for these weeks because they resonate so deeply with the work taking place in the Maundy Café as barriers are broken down, and lines are blurred between volunteer, staff , and guest. Who is hosting whom? Who is giving? Who receives? It’s not entirely clear. And it’s beautiful. It’s the idea that’s being tested as the Maundy Café opens for brunch on June 10th from 9am-11am for the sum-mer season. Come to off er hospitality and to receive it. Come to build friendships, and to see what God is up to as her people extend hospitality to all who come, and invite each to participate as they are able, and as they feel led.

I'd love to hear from you. Please email me on [email protected] with your thoughts on this ini-tial thinking.
