The Atlantic Philanthropies gave €138.4 million toTrinity and the University of California, San Francisco(UCSF) in 2015 to establish the Global Brain HealthInstitute (GBHI). This groundbreaking initiative aimsto tackle the looming dementia epidemic andimprove health and dementia care worldwide.Dementia is among the most devastating illnessesglobally, affecting over 48 million people, a numberwhich is expected to double every 20 years if thereare no effective interventions. The GBHI will train600 global researchers over 15 years in the US,Ireland and across the world to carry out dementiaresearch, deliver health care and change policies andpractices. Trinity and UCSF are in an excellentposition to deliver GBHI based on their existingstrengths in brain health research.

EIT Health & EIT RawMaterials

The European Institute ofInnovation & Technology (EIT)is an independent body of theEuropean Union set up in 2008 to promote innovation andentrepreneurship across Europe to overcome some of its greatestchallenges. Knowledge andInnovation Communities (KICs) arepartnerships that bring universitiesand research centres together withbusinesses to promote thedevelopment of innovativeproducts and services, to createnew start-up companies and totrain new entrepreneurs.

The winners of the EIT’s 2014 Call for Knowledge and InnovationCommunities (KICs) proposalswere the pan-European consortiaInnoLife (EIT Health) andRawMatTERS (EIT Raw Materials),bringing together more than 150 partners, one of those beingTrinity, from 20 EU Member States.

Future and EmergingTechnologies (FET)

The EU Commission has committed€1 billion to the Graphene Flagshipproject led by CRANN. This is thelargest ever research projectfunded in the history of theEuropean Union.

Trinity Technology andEnterprise Campus

Trinity Technology andEnterprise Campus (TTEC) isbased in Dublin’s vibrant ‘SiliconDocks’, home to some of theworld’s largest technologycompanies including Google andFacebook.

The campus hosts a variety ofactivities including the NationalTechnology Centre Learnovate, and The Tower, which acts as anincubation centre for Trinity.

In 2008 Mr and Mrs Naughtoninvested in the NaughtonInstitute, a state-of-the-artnanoscience facility CRANN.Trinity today, on a per researcherbasis, is among the top in theworld in Nanotechnology and inMaterial Science. Since the initialinvestment the Naughtons havesupported a number of otherinitiatives including STEMscholarships.
