PROJECTS

• The University of the West Indies (UWI)– A Coastal Monitoring System for Trinidad and

Tobago– Neo-Tropical Animal Wildlife and Small

Ruminants as sustainable sources of animal protein

• The National Institute of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (NIHERST)– SciTechKnoFest 2011

PROJECTS

• The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT)– Renewable energy projects (in

collaboration with BPTT)• Wave and desalination research• Solar-photo voltaic (PV) research

– Developing a safe, healthy and green tourism industry in Trinidad and Tobago

Page 7: TRINIDAD & TOBAGO

Objectives• To obtain data for analysis and design of

coastal protection schemes in erosion hot spots

• To improve monitoring of existing defense schemes

• To provide accurate oceanographic data to facilitate government development plans

• To support research in climate change, coastal engineering and oceanography

A Coastal Monitoring System for Trinidad and Tobago

Page 8: TRINIDAD & TOBAGO

Expected Results

• An accessible Database of Oceanographic Data

• A Decision-support System for coastal and shoreline management issues

• A web-based coastal atlas• Design parameters for extreme wave

events

Page 9: TRINIDAD & TOBAGO

Objectives• To study the anatomy, physiology,

reproduction and nutrition of neo-tropical animals which have the potential to produce meat

• To develop sustainable production systems for neo-tropical animals, including grazing and supplementation levels for female hair sheep at pasture

Page 10: TRINIDAD & TOBAGO

Objectives, con’d• To assess the reproductive physiology,

nutrition and sustainable production of tropical hair sheep and goats for the production of meat and milk on sustainably-produced forage-based diets

• To integrate neo-tropical animal production and small ruminant production with Caribbean Agro and Eco-tourism products and increase culinary diversity

Objective

SciTechKnoFest 2011 aims to promote awareness of science, technology and innovation. It seeks to bring an understanding of STI, their impact on the country’s well-being and their role as contributors to our development as individuals and as a nation.

NIHERSTSciTechKnoFest, 2011

Page 12: TRINIDAD & TOBAGO

Areas of Proposed ImpactSciTechKnoFest 2011 focuses on promoting knowledge of the following key issues in STI:

• Disaster Awareness• Water Management• Renewable Energy• Food Production & Security

Page 13: TRINIDAD & TOBAGO

Objective• This project aims to exploit the wave

energy resources of Trinidad and Tobago using offshore platform technologies and the use of heaving body technologies for the production of potable water

Renewable Energy ProjectWave and Desalination Research

Page 14: TRINIDAD & TOBAGO

Activities• Review of the wave seasons• Collection and analysis of raw wave data• Design of components for a Test Rig• Simulation of the Test Rig on automation

studio• Research to be conducted at the

desalination pilot plant

Wave and Desalination Research, con’d

Page 15: TRINIDAD & TOBAGO

Expected Result• To build and optimize technology for the

use of wave technology to produce potable water

• To develop a working pilot followed by a commercial design

• To begin exporting the technology and related services

ObjectiveTo evaluate the long-term performance of Photo Voltaic technology on the climate of Trinidad and Tobago to effectively design systems for residential, commercial and industrial applications.

Renewable Energy ProjectsSolar- Photo Voltaic (PV) Research

Page 17: TRINIDAD & TOBAGO

Expected ResultThe research into Solar PV systems is expected to bring the following benefits:

• Reduce carbon emissions• Lower energy costs• More energy independence• Better allocation of petrochemical

resources
