The 27th Annual Frederick T. West Lectureship was just held on Fri-day, March 8th at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco in conjunc-tion with the 114th Annual Alumni Weekend. Dr. Richard McLaughlin was the featured speaker and his lecture, “Overview of Systemized and Effective Orthodontic Care” was quite informative and included an interesting look at a variety of cases as well as his treatment phi-losophy and mechanics.

There will be a Faculty, Alumni, and Residents Bowling Event on Friday, April 19, 7:00-9:00 pm, at Yerba Buena Bowling Center, located at 750 Folsom Street in San Francisco. We started this event last year and there was great turnout. We are expecting to have another fun night of bowling, food, and camaraderie, so make sure to check your email for the Evite that was sent out this past month.

The Alumni Reception at the Amer-ican Association of Orthodontists Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday, May 4 from 4:00 to 5:45 pm. We will be in Franklin 7 at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown,

A Save-the-Date Evite will be sent out later this spring and invitations will be mailed out in June.

The events listed above are made possible with assistance from your membership dues. Most of you have received the dues statement from the Alumni Association at the end of 2012. The dental school’s Alumni Association will send out another mailing with dues notifica-tion this summer. I encourage you to consider joining our alumni as-sociation if you have not done so already. In addition, if you are inter-

ested in making a donation to our chapter, please email me so that I can forward you the information to help you make a contribution.

The Trident continues to be a wonderful way for us to keep in touch with our fellow alumni and stay up to date on what is going on in the orthodontic department. You can access the newsletter on the Alumni Association website at www.dugonionline.org. Click on “Publications” and it will take you to the page where there is a link to the newsletter. If you know of classmates of colleagues who might want to receive our newslet-ter or would like to be added to our contact list for updates, including Evite invitations, please email me with that updated information.

I wish each of you the very best this year and will look forward to seeing you throughout 2013 at our many upcoming events! DEPARTMENT CHAIRMAN’S REPORTBy Dr. Robert Boyd

Great news! One of our former faculty and graduates, Dr. Thad Cham-plin ’84, has recently volunteered to join our Monday PM clinic to teach with our Program Director, Dr. Heesoo Oh and Dr. Joorok Park. This opening was created when Drs. William Lieber and Douglas Tinloy re-cently retired from teaching. We will certainly miss Bill and Doug and all of the outstanding teaching they provided for so many years. In fact, Bill has been a faculty member almost from the time he graduated in 1974 from our orthodontic program. We wish Bill and Doug the best and will always hope that if retirement gets too boring they will consider coming back.

Other good news is that I believe we are the only orthodontic depart-ment in the U.S. that has two endowed professorships. The first one established was the Frederick T. West Endowed Professor and Chair, which I was awarded in 2005. Now our beloved Dean Emeritus Arthur A. Dugoni has personally completed the $1 million funding for a second endowed professorship, which will be called the Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni Endowed Orthodontic Professorship.

Art has been a great philanthropist for our university with his incred-ible generosity over the past 50 years of his time and resources. We, of course, named the dental school the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in 2005 because of all his tireless efforts over so many years of building this school and making it one of the best dental schools in the world today. Art has also set up endowments for scholarships for dental students and has supported other endowments that help our school every day.

At our last Executive committee meeting our department faculty pres-ent voted unanimously to nominate Dr. Sheldon Baumrind for consid-eration by Dean Ferrillo and the University as the first Arthur A. Dugoni Endowed Professor. Shelly was deeply touched by this vote of confi-dence for all he has done for so many years of dedicated hard work to the school and our profession.

The plans continue to go well for construction of our new school on Fifth Street between Mission and Howard Streets (see our school’s web-site for more details). The building will have semi opaque walls to give a natural light effect throughout the building and wide escalators to move patients, students and faculty quickly from floor to floor. It will be the most modern and efficiently constructed dental school ever and you will all be so proud to be part of it as it will attract so much attention world wide with it being in the heart of such a great city as San Francisco.

PROGRAM DIRECTOR’S REPORTBy Dr. Heesoo Oh, Class of 2005

What’s new in 2013? In addition to planning for the new school, we are also preparing for the CODA Accreditation site visit in October of 2014. In light of the fact that this visit will take place shortly after our big move, we decided to initiate the process early in order to ensure adequate preparation. The accreditation review occurs every seven years, and since our program was previously awarded full ac-creditation without any recommendations in 2007, I similarly anticipate no problems for 2014.

Therefore, I would like to utilize the preparation process as an opportunity to strengthen our program by making various improvements. Over the past months, several changes have already been imple-mented toward this effort: we are now using Google calendars for the department schedule, courses, and internal communication, archiving all course materials and syllabi in the SAKAI website, and conducting course evaluations through Qualtrics, an online survey software program.

There have also been changes in our clinical faculty team. Unfortunately, Drs. William Lieber, Douglas Tinloy, and Shahram Nabipour are unable to continue their clinical instruction.

After 36 years of committed service, Dr. Lieber de-cided it was time to retire from clinical teaching. He is a wealth of knowledge and experience and Monday afternoon clinic will not be the same without him. I have enjoyed working with him and would like to wish him all the best in the next chapter of his life. Dr. Lieber’s “retirement” was celebrated with a luncheon on March 5.

Dr. Tinloy, one of our famous faculty-father and res-ident-son (Jeff, Class of 2009) duos, will also be leaving Monday afternoon clinic due to increased personal and professional commitments. I would like to thank him for sharing his clinical experience for 6 years and wish him the best of luck.

Dr. Nabipour, who joined as part-time faculty in 2009 and who was honored by the residents two years in a row for his excellent teaching in both the clinic and his didactic course, will be taking some time off to build his private practice. However, he will continue to teach the residents in his “Advanced Clinical Diag-nosis and Treatment Planning” class.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to these three individuals. Their enthusiasm and dedi-cation to teaching have resonated with our residents through the years.

Our residents have been busy and productive during the Fall and Winter quarters. The first-year residents finished their two-quarter long Typodont course with Drs. Ken Shimizu, Bert Rouleau, and Chris Ander-son last December and will have a refresher Typodont workshop in May. In clinic, each resident has started about 30-35 new patients thus far, and we are con-fident that this will translate into at least 45 new patients by the end of their first year.

The second-year residents have been diligently pre-paring for the ABO written examination in April, the initial step toward becoming board certified ortho-dontists. They also did an excellent job reviewing ar-ticles for the Resident’s Journal Review section of the AJODO, which was published in the February issue. Unfortunately, the journal’s copy editor printed the name and location of our school erroneously. The cor-rection will be announced in the April issue.

We are also proud of our recent graduates, the Class of 2012. It is always a pleasure to receive updates from them. James Galea works as an associate for Dr. Bob Fry in Kansas. Katherine Kieu joined Drs. Adrian Vogt (’94) and Tom Ellerhorst (’04) in their San Ma-teo practice and has joined us as part-time faculty (1 day a week) to continue doing research in CRIL.

Courtney Ray is an associate for Drs. David Alpan (’98) and Michael Luther in Los Angeles. Kiri Her-chold works for Indian Health Services in Santa Rosa. Michi Bittner-Eberle works in Florida and also associ-ates for her father-in-law in Alaska. Sarah Chung is working full-time at Western Dental in Stockton. Mi-hee Hong returned to Korea and obtained a position at one of the finest university hospitals in Seoul (she plans to pursue an academic career). And Abir Balg-honaim is returning to Saudi Arabia to resume working for Saudi Aramco after they sponsored her research and orthodontic specialty education.

A significant amount of effort from the department was directed toward helping our former residents complete their board cases to take the ABO ICE clin-ical examination. Drs. Mihee Hong and Abir Balg-honaim both successfully passed their clinical exams

PROGRAM DIRECTOR’S REPORT

NEW CAMPUS TO FEATURE EXPANDED, STATE-OF-THE-ART ORTHODONTIC CLINICNaming opportunities available for 155 Fifth Street clinic and campus spacesBy Dr. Maureen Valley, Clinic Director

Construction is moving forward on the dental school’s new San Francisco cam-pus, and the plans give the Orthodontic Department plenty to get excited about. An expanded, state-of-the-art Orthodontic Clinic is just one new campus feature that will benefit students, residents, patients, faculty and staff members alike. The Orthodontic Clinic will be located on the 3rd floor.

One big change from the existing facility at 2155 Webster Street is that the size of the new clinic will be larger to accommodate 24 chairs (a 20% increase over the 20 chairs in the existing clinic). All residents will have chairs at the times they need, and first-year residents will be able to start their clinical experience the day they arrive. The additional chairs will also support more efficient scheduling for patients.

During the last decade, our Orthodontic program class size increased from six to eight residents and the length of the program was extended from 24 to 27 months. The new clinic will allow us to better fit the existing class size, ensuring that our residents receive an outstanding experience in a space that works for them.

For patients, the new clinic will offer a larger and more welcoming reception area, and streamlined technology that will follow them through their experience. We will have patient education digital display screens and two dedicated medical imaging areas with improved privacy. The new clinic patient greeting area will also offer a larger, better-designed and more private layout for clinic business staff members.

and became diplomates. I would like to thank all our faculty and staff, especially Dr. Steven Dugoni (ABO Board Director) for their continued commitment in making this possible. Congratulations!

Finally, I would like to welcome another exceptional group of eight residents who will be entering our orthodontic program this July as the Class of 2015:

Lateefa Alkharafi (Kuwait University 2009)Vanessa E. Chong (University of Toronto 2013)Daniel K. Frey (Temple University 2013)Cheryl K. Guerrero (UCSF 2013)Justin Maccaro (Harvard 2013)Laura Mancini (McGill University 2013)Jesse J. Punch (Tufts University 2013)Jennifer Yau (UCLA 2013)

NEW CAMPUS TO FEATURE EXPANDED, STATE-OF-THE-ART ORTHODONTIC CLINIC (CONT’D)

The new clinic will offer several rooms that will be used by the Orthodontic Department. A dedicated Ortho Conference Room will be able to fit up to 40 people (essentially the whole department) at one time. A new Or-tho Multipurpose Room will offer a dedicated, private space for use by the department. This room will include lockers for residents, staff, and part-time faculty. It will also offer modular furniture and space where faculty can review computer images and cases with the residents.

The new Orthodontic Clinic design will upgrade operations in other areas as well as to improve its overall flow and efficiency. The clinic will have its own dispensary with space for all instruments and cassettes, and a checkout system for supplies and materials to help control overhead costs. There will also be a dedicated col-lection room for soiled instruments and cassettes.

These exciting changes will keep us on the cutting edge in many ways, and support our position as one of the leading orthodontic programs in the world. I am proud that the Orthodontic Department has been involved in the clinic design from the beginning.

For those interested in viewing the project, seeing floor plans, and architectural renderings, please visit www.dental.pacific.edu/plans. There is also a live webcam of the construction site available.

Plans for the new campus calls for a dedicated patient entrance separate from the student, faculty, and staff entry. The new campus will also include a variety of other features. The learning spaces will be designed in a flexible way to support the small-group learning approach, and the school’s Main Clinic is being designed to support eight small group practices that will give students a clinical experience more closely resembling a private practice environment. The building will offer more communal spaces to support the school’s culture, a completely new Simulation Lab, and additional space for University of the Pacific programs and events outside of dentistry. Additionally, the location on 5th Street between Mission and Howard Streets offers nearby public transportation, parking and freeway access, which are expected to make it more convenient for everyone to get to the school.

The school will move to the new campus in July of 2014 over the summer break. This timing will allow us to minimize disruption to patients, students, staff and faculty.

LONGTIME FACULTY MEMBER RETIRESAfter 36 plus years of teaching in our department, Dr. William Lieber ’74 has decided to retire from the clinical faculty. He sold his private practice to Dr. Michelle Masuda ’10 last May.

Dr. Lieber was a member of the second class in our program. Soon after graduating, he was recruited to teach by Dr. William Odom. He has been here ever since on Mondays and even some Thursdays for a time faithfully making the trip from Danville.

An appreciation gathering for Dr. Lieber was held at the school on March 5, 2013. Dr. Roger Boero ’75 who commuted with Bill during the residency and Jetson Lee ’86 who taught with Bill for many years on Mondays took time out from their busy schedules to be with Bill.

We appreciate his devotion and contributions. He will be sorely missed. Stay tuned for the next Trident, as Dr. Lieber will be the subject of an upcoming profile.

Light fare and a cake were available. Dr. Lieber was presented with a huge card signed by residents and faculty and a gift. Comments were made by Drs. Boyd, Baumrind, Oh, Lee, and Boero before Bill was taken out to lunch at Via Veneto.

Congratulations to Shawn Perce (2004), Andrew Kouvaris (2004), Leah Walker (2006), Lana Dal-bah (2007), Manal Abu Al-Melh (2010), David Lee (2011), Mihee Hong (2012), and Abir Balghonaim (2012). The American Board of Orthodontics has cer-tified or recertified these graduates from our Depart-ment of Orthodontics at either the August or Novem-ber 2012 Clinical Examination in St. Louis at the ABO examination center.

When asked about his experience taking the ABO ex-amination, Shawn Perce shared the following with me:

It takes many hours to select, analyze, and prepare your cases. However, I found that the benefits of self-analysis are worth the time invested. It was the pro-cess of preparation and not necessarily the examina-tion itself that provided the most benefits. It forces you to remove yourself from the busyness of your prac-tice and to take a closer look at what you are doing on a daily basis. It brings to light deficiencies in record quality, diagnosis, treatment planning and your ability to obtain a quality finished result. Confronting these limitations head on and identifying areas for improve-ment is where the real benefit lies. I now find myself looking at my patients during the course of the day with a sharper focus. The examination itself is very well organized and not as stressful as you might think. All of the hard work is done by then and the examin-ers go to great lengths to create a positive atmosphere at the exam. They have all gone through the process themselves and are therefore very respectful of the time and energy you have put into your cases. Al-though the preparations involve a sacrifice of time, it was a positive experience for me and one that I would encourage others to pursue.

Leah Walker also shared her thoughts:

I had a positive experience taking the ABO exam in November. Although the examiners are critical, they were very helpful when going over cases. Preparing for the exam forced me to look critically at treatment plans and to focus on the details of finishing a case to ABO standards. I was surprised to learn so much about her cases and I am now making improvements based upon this new knowledge.

Congratulations to Dr. Heesoo Oh who was invited to show her ABO cases at the AAO meeting in May 2013 in Philadelphia. Thank you to Thomas Ellerhorst, Lani Chun, Joorak Park, and Dante Gonzales for present-ing cases at the PCSO Annual Session in Monterey, California in October 2012.

I would like to acknowledge Dr. HeeSoo Oh for the work she has done in preparing our residents for the ABO Written Examination and Clinical Examination. Dr. Oh conducts an annual ABO review course during the winter quarter to prepare residents for the ABO written examination given each April. In addition, she encourages residents with her close monitoring their ABO clinical cases and ensures that the ABO records are complete. Because of Dr. Oh’s efforts, more resi-dents are preparing to take the ABO Initial Certifica-tion Examination shortly after graduation. Most of the residents from the Class of 2012 will be participating in the Initial Certification Examination and two have already passed the Initial Certification Examination.

The ABO Gateway Certification comes to an end this year. If you signed up for the Gateway Examination and your time has expired, you can apply for the Be-ginning Certification Examination. The Beginning Cer-tification Examination has the same requirements as the Gateway Examination. You simply need to reapply with the American Board of Orthodontics for the Be-ginning Certification Examination. Any cases that you prepared for the Gateway Examination can be used for the Beginning Certification Examination. Please check the ABO web site for more details.

Many orthodontists thought they needed to retake the ABO written examination after a certain period of time or if they did not come for the Gateway Examination. You only have to take and pass the written examina-tion once. Even if you passed 30 years ago, you can still take the Beginning Certification Examination without retaking the written examination.

If you have any questions regarding the American Board of Orthodontics written or clinical examina-tions, please do not hesitate to email me at: [email protected].

CRIL UPDATEBy Dr. Sheldon Baumrind, Director of the Craniofacial Research Instrumentation Laboratory

Our current work at the Craniofacial Research Instru-mentation Laboratory (CRIL) is largely focused on the building and management of the American As-sociation of Orthodontists Legacy Collection, for which our lab has primary responsibility. The AAOF collection consists of longitudinal X-ray and study casts records for growing children drawn from the collections of nine collaborating institutions in the United States and Canada. At present, the online collection contains longitudinal cephalograms for 625 growing individuals totaling more than 11,500 images. Access to the AAOF Collection is freely available at www.AAOFLegacyCollection.org.

The nine institutions participating in the AAOF Legacy Project are the Broadbent-Bolton Collection at Case Western University, the Burlington Growth Study at the University of Toronto, the Denver Growth Study at the University of Oklahoma, the Fels Longi-tudinal Growth Study at Wright University, Ohio, the Forsyth Dental Institute Twin Study, the Iowa Growth Study at the University of Iowa, the Mathews Growth Study at the University of the Pacific, and the Or-egon Growth Study at the Oregon Health and Sci-ences University.

In addition to managing the creation of this unique and vitally important records database, CRIL is orga-nizing the acquisition of landmark location data for the construction of growth tables focusing primar-ily on the spontaneous cranial development of chil-dren with class II and class III malocclusions in the absence of treatment. Landmark data and select a cephalometric measurements for more than 100 of the 625 individuals in the sample have been previ-ously collected and uploaded. Within the next three months, information for an additional 150 class II and class III individuals will be added. This new data set has been made available by replicate assess-ments by two visiting academic orthodontists from China, Dr. Bing Han of Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology and Dr. Jie Zhang of the Changsha Stomatological Hospital. Expansion of the legacy collection continues.

Our next project will be to provide complementary images and coordinate data from study casts for ap-proximately 350 of the same subjects at multiple time points during growth.
