A Message from the Senior Warden

Stewardship 2017 As many in our congregation cope with ongoing issues related to Hurricane Irma, is it possible to focus on God’s goodness and mercy? Is it possible to both feel and demonstrate gratitude? Praise God, it is! When we experience difficult times of any kind, it’s comforting to connect with the Word of God and hear Him speak to us the peace, wisdom, strength and direction we need.

The approach to this years’ stewardship program is certainly timely and truly directed by God as we employ a journaling method referred to as SOAP. The theme verse for the Stewardship Program is “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10 (KJV) Praying this verse to God opens us to hear Him and prepares us to do His will.

At worship services on September 30 and October 1, SOAP Journals will be distributed. In your Journal, you will find a scripture passage for each day in October. The SOAP model for Bible study will provide a guideline for recording in your Journal each day.

Scripture Observation Application PrayerEach passage references “heart”. They are powerful verses that call us to love with all our heart, rejoice and give thanks in our heart, obey and trust with our whole heart, know in our heart, give with our heart and choose in our heart how we will honor and serve God and His people.

Stewardship programs frequently reference giving our time, our talents and our treasures. Your Rectors and Vestry sincerely pray that the SOAP method of Bible study will help direct you to determine the amount of time you give in service and ministry to others, to identify the talents God has given you for service and ministry and the portion of your treasure you will offer for the work and ministry of God’s church.

AFTER THE STORMBe merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge;in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, until the destroying storms pass by. Psalm 57:1

The month of September was largely consumed by preparing for Hurricane Irma, praying for calm strength through the storm, and then cleaning up after the storm passed by. As a church family God sustained us as we prayed for one another and found help and strength.

The church sustained some significant damage in the storm. The pictures tell much of the story. The east wall of the church had water damage from the strong wind and rain. Some water entered the wall due to roof tiles blowing off and more water came in around the windows. The Vestry is exploring options for that repair.

The east side of the nursery also had water in the walls and in the carpet. Wall board has now been replaced and the carpet removed.

The courtyard overflowed with water during the storm, flooding the nurse’s storage room, parish hall, book nook, and prayer room. A restoration company delivered fans and dehumidifiers. Parishioners brought generators and within a few days, the areas were dried out. However, all the carpet must be replaced. Over 4000 ft2 of carpet have been ordered. The old carpet needs to be professionally removed because of the glue used when it was installed. We hope to have carpet removal and installation accomplished before the end of October.

Finally, did you notice what is missing from the steeple? Yes, the cross blew off. Jack Morton, a member of the parish, has taken the cross for repairs before it is put back up.

We are extremely grateful to the many parishioners who simply showed up at the church right after the storm to help. Thanks be to God for bringing us safely through the storm and for providing so many opportunities to connect with one another in prayer and support. The cross may be missing from the top of the steeple, but the love of Jesus that is represents is clearly present in the hearts of our Holy Trinity family.

God bless you!

Rev. Pam and Fr. Steve

From Your Health Ministry TeamThis is the time to get your flu vaccination. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published their New Flu Information for 2017-2018: “Getting an annual flu vaccine is the first and best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu.” Flu vaccination can reduce flu illnesses, doctors visits, and missed work and school due to flu, as well as prevent flu-related hospitalizations. Only injectable flu shots are recommended for use for this season. Flu vaccines have been updated to better match circulating viruses. You have the opportunity to come to worship and also have a flu shot. On Sunday, October 22 from 8:30-11:00am in the Narthex the Visiting Nurse Association will be here to administer flu vaccines to all ages over 10 years. Bring your primary insurance card/or $35. Vouchers will be available if needed.

easy way for parishioners to gather together on a regular but informal basis for purely social reasons. There are no programs, no projects, and no assigned topic of conversation. Just to enjoy one another’s company, to strengthen bonds of community, to meet new members and simply get to know and love each other as part of our faith community here at Holy Trinity. Groups generally consist of 6 – 8 people who meet once a month for a meal and socializing as a small group. Each group is unique and decides the format that works best for them, which may include dinner at a restaurant, brunch after church, a picnic or a pork roast around the kitchen table. The kick-off starting our new season will be Sunday October 15, the SUPER SUPPER. If you cannot attend the SUPER SUPPER – you may still sign up! Sign up in the Narthex or church office.

Adult Sunday School Classes Start Again on October 15!Adult Sunday School led by Jack Bottomley will begin again on October 15 at 10:30am on the east side of Lewis Hall. We will begin a study of the Book of Matthew, the first book of the New Testament. There was a great deal of history in the 400 years between the Old and New Testament. As the Old Testament closed the world was dominated by the Medo-Persian Empire. In the 400 years between the testaments the power had shifted from Asia to Europe and Greece under Alexander the Great became the world power to be succeeded by Rome which had conquered the Greek empire and had taken over as the dominant player. There were also a number of religious groups in Jewish society that influenced the local culture. Into this environment Jesus was born and ministered. Matthew was written in Hebrew for the Jewish people and was designed to act as a bridge between the Old and New Testaments. Please join us for the study of this interesting book that introduces Jesus as the Messiah.
