FROM THE EAST Greetings Brethren, First of all I would like to thank Brothers Ron Havens and Don Sharp for their Masonic educa- tional talks at our last stated meeting. Both presentations and sub- ject matter were very pleasing and informative. In support of our Grand Master Most Worshipful Michael Wiggins this year we have stressed Masonic teachings and educational programs. In this writing I would like to continue our dis- cussion of public Masonic ceremonies with a brief account concerning the cornerstone and its sym- bolism. Before we begin this discussion we should remember the significance of the northeast corner. From the Lightfoot Manual of the Lodge dated 1934 we are told “It is at the same northeast point, that those first instructions are given in Masonry, which enable the true Mason to commence the erection of the spiritual temple, in which, after the decay of his mortal frame, his soul becomes united with the Su- preme.” This symbolic reference to the cornerstone of a material edifice, when, at his initiation, the Mason commences the moral and intellectual task of erect- ing a spiritual temple in his heart, is designed to im- press the idea of acquiring the qualities that are nec- essary to constitute a “well formed, true and trusty” cornerstone. The squareness of it’s surface is em- blematical of it’s moral force. In Masonic Symbol- ism the cornerstone signifies a true Mason, and in the first character which the apprentice is made to represent after his initiation has been completed. Brethren,
The meal for the AprilStated Meeting willMary's meatloaf with newpotatoes and green beans.
Freemasonry has tenets peculiar to itself. Theyserve as testimonials of character and qualifica-tions, which are only conferred after due courseof instruction and examination. These are ofno small value; they speak a universal lan-guage, and act as a passport to the attentionsand support of the initiated in all parts of theworld. They cannot be lost as long as memoryretains its power.
Let the possessor of them be expatriated, ship-wrecked or imprisoned. Let him be stripped ofeverything he has got in the world, still thosecredentials remain, and are available for use ascircumstances require.
The good effects they have produced are estab-lished by the most incontestable facts of histo-ry. They have stayed the uplifted hand of thedestroyer; they have softened the asperities ofthe tyrant; they have mitigated the horrors ofcaptivity; they have subdued the rancor of ma-levolence; and broken down the barriers of po-litical animosity and sectarian alienation. Onthe field of battle, in the solitudes of the uncul-tivated forest, or in the busy haunts of thecrowded city, they have made men of the mosthostile feelings, the most distant regions, anddiversified conditions, rush to the aid of eachother, and feel a special joy and satisfactionthat they have been able to afford relief to aBrother Mason
