THE GAME The first-place Trenton Thunder try again to snap a season-long losing skid that has now reached seven games as they continue a critical four-game series against the Reading Phillies Wednesday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. After dropping the first two of the series, Trenton’s first-place lead in the Eastern Division stands at 4.0 games over New Britain and Reading with 20 games remaining in the regular season. Trenton (70-52) is 1.5 games behind Akron for the best record in the EL and in all of Double-A baseball. Today is day nine for the Thunder in a season-ending stretch of 28 straight days with a game. This is the final of four series (2 home, 2 away) and 12th of 13 meetings between the teams. The squads are squaring off 11 times in 29 days (7/19-8/16), including seven games in a ten-day span (8/7-8/16). LHP Shaeffer Hall will make his team-leading 24 th start of the season for Trenton. Hall is third in the league in innings pitched (140.2) despite missing a start earlier this month while on the DL. The opening- night Trenton starter has a 2.28 ERA over his last 8 outings dating back to June 28 th . He lost at Altoona Friday night after allowing 5 R (4 ER) on 10 H in 5.1 IP. Hall went 10-8 with a 4.12 ERA in 26 games (24 GS) for the Thunder in 2011. The University of Kansas alumn is in his 4th pro season, all with the Yanks, and has a record of 30-23 in 77 games (74 GS). Hall is 1-1 against Reading in 2 starts this season. LOOKING BACK: Reading Scores Seven Unanswered In 7-2 Win Over Thunder Reading scored seven unanswered runs after Trenton had taken an early 2-0 lead and the Phillies handed the Thunder their seventh consecutive loss, 7-2, Tuesday night. Darin Ruf hit his third home run of the series and league-best 28th of the season for Reading, which moved to within 4.0 games of Trenton (70-52) with 20 games to play. Ruf hit a Francisco Rondon pitch well out to left field in the seventh to finish the scoring. THUNDER CLAPS... ANATOMY OF A SKID: The Thunder have been out-scored 45-17 during their current seven-game skid. Trenton has led for a total of only 2.0 innings over those seven games (1.5 inn on 8/8, 0.5 inn on 8/14) and has trailed at least 3-0 in five of them. The offense has scored only 17 runs in its last seven games (2.4/gm) and is batting only .197 during that time (46-233) with just 15 extra-base hits (12 doubles and three home runs). ZOILO POWER: OF Zoilo Almonte has found his power stroke recently. Over his last 20 games played (beginning 7/22), Almonte has hit eight homers and seven doubles and has collected 18 RBI. 15 of his last 22 hits have gone for extra bases. He is now fourth in the EL in homers (18) and fifth in slugging percentage (.487). PIRELA COOLING: After moving to the league-lead in hitting earlier this month infielder Jose Pirela has gone into a slump. He is batting just 3-for-36 (.083) with 9 Ks over his last nine games played including an 0-for-20 skid that ended Tuesday night. Pirela is now ninth in the league in batting average (.300). ON RECORD PACE: Trenton by far and away leads the EL in home runs, as the squad has hit 142 in the first 122 games of the season. The next closest team (Bowie) has 101. The team record for HRs in a season is 150 (1996 & 1999 teams) and the Eastern League record is 198 (Buffalo in 1979). The Thunder’s home run total is third in all of Minor League Baseball and the most in Double-A (High Desert, A-Advanced- 162, Sacramento, AAA- 155). Luke Murton is second in the league with 22 long balls and Zoilo Almonte is tied for fourth with 18. ADAMS MARK: INF David Adams has been a huge reason for Trenton’s success this season. CLOSE CALLS: Trenton is 11-2 in one-run games since the All-Star break despite dropping a 5-4 decision at Altoona Saturday. The team is 28-15 in such games this season (including 19-4 at home). BEST OF LUCK: All-Star reliever Kelvin Perez was promoted to Triple-A Scranton Friday after going 6-1 with four saves and a 1.14 ERA in a league-best 41 appearances for Trenton. He became the fifth Thunder pitcher promoted to AAA this season (joining Chase Whitley, Preston Claiborne, Danny Farquhar and Lee Hyde). DL’s A PLENTY: The Thunder have had 34 in-season DL stints between a total of 25 different players. 23 of the 33 players on Trenton’s current roster, and nine of the ten opening-day starters, have gone to the DL at some point. 14 of the team’s 18 current position players have spent time on the Trenton DL in 2012. THE GAME The first-place Trenton Thunder try again to snap a season-long losing skid that has now reached seven games as they continue a critical four-game series against the Reading Phillies Wednesday night at FirstEnergy Stadium.
