Akron is one of just two Eastern League franchises (along with Richmond/Connecticut) against whom the Thunder have an all-time losing record at 140-145. YEAR OF THE PITCHER: The Eastern League is in the midst of one of the most pitching-dominant seasons in its history in 2019. Entering play on Sunday the league wide batting average stands at .238 with teams scoring 4.03 runs per game. The last time the league finished with a team batting average under .250 and 4.0 runs per game was in 1989 (.249 / 3.95) while 1971 was the last season below .240 and fewer than 4.0 runs per game. BEEN TOO LONG: The Thunder last won a home series June 24-26, taking the first and last games of a three-game set from Reading. Since then, Trenton has gone split-loss-split in their home series results (a 5-7 total record). This presents a dramatic shift from early this season, when the Thunder jumped out to a 14-2 record at home, the best 16-game home start in franchise history. GIVE YOURSELF A CHANCE: To extreme proportions, run prevention has been key to Trenton’s success this season, as the team is 10-35 when allowing four or more runs. Six of the team’s last seven losses has seen the opponent score five or more runs. On the flipside, the Thunder are 42-8 when allowing three or fewer runs. HATS OFF TO HOLDER: Kyle Holder is on a season-high 11-game hitting streak (15-for-42, .357 during streak) and continues his consistent hitting overall, posting a .327 average over 39 games since June 1. The San Diego, California native is fourth on the team with 79 hits (just three behind team leader Ben Ruta) and has already established new career-highs in doubles (19), triples (3), and home runs (7). MARVELOUS MATT: Outfielder Matt Lipka is 18-for-40 (.450) over his last 11 games and had a season-high 9-game hitting streak snapped on Friday against Hartford. Despite playing in just over half as many games as most Thunder regulars, is third on the team with 12 stolen bases. WHO THEY ARE: Of the 25 players on the Thunder roster, 14 were drafted by the Yankees, eight were signed as minor league or international free agents, and three were acquired via trade.
