    Secure exit under all circumstances

Panic Exit Device technology provides a safe escape

opportunity from a danger zone in case of emer-

gency. One push on the horizontal activation bar is

all that is necessary to open the door, without a key

    and using minimum effort.

Sapa Building System offers a range of aesthetic

and high performance panic exit solutions, meeting

the safety and security requirements of the Euro-

    pean standards EN 1125.

    Two concepts, same efciency

To offer maximum architectural freedom and inte-

gration, Sapa Building System offers two horizontal

panic door locking systems which differ in their

aesthetics and function, both designed to meet all

    your safety and security needs.

Push-bar: panic door lock with a tube

Movement of the horizontally attached tube in a

downward arc releases the locking mechanism. The

exclusive line of panic bars transforms a functional

object into an interior design accessory, capable of

tting in perfectly anywhere and everywhere. The T

cover-plates combine robustness and elegance, with

    precise shapes and balanced dimensions.

Touch-bar: panic door lock with a pressure bar

Movement of the horizontally attached tube in the

direction of escape releases the locking mechanism.

Touch-bar panic exit devices offer a compact exible

solution capable of tting in all architectural environ-

ments. Particular attention has been paid to design,

quality and technical characteristic to create a series

    of rened congurations.

Sapa Building Systemoffers a range of aestheticand high performancesolutions for panic exits, meeting the strictest safetyand security requirements.

A virtually invisible closing solution integrated into the door leafThanks to the particular care taken of the design (entrusted to PININFARINA), this product

enhances the look of any architectural context.

Project: Lige-Guillemins StationArchitect: Santiago Calatrava LLC

    City: Lige - Belgium

    Fabricator/Installe

    A landmark in the high-speed

    rail network connecting

    Western and Eastern Europe

You can tell by the new Guillemins station that Lige

is a major junction on t he high-speed rail connec-

tions between Western and Eastern Europe. The

32,000 square meter roof, with its aluminium and

glass panels supported by steel beams, in particular

    appeals to the imagination.

In view of the importance of Guillemins for the high-

speed rail network, the Belgian national rail operator

SNCB/NMBS decided to completely renew part of

the station. This involved demolishing some of the

old station and constructing a new wing adjoining

    the present main building.

As a result, an imposing yet elegant structure now

graces the station complex in Lige. The design

work was entrusted to Santiago Calatrava, a Spanish

architect who has many notable achievements to his

credit. His creative plans formed the basis for a call

for tenders in 2004. The Belgian company Portal

won the contract and manufactured, assembled

and erected the roof. For extruding and painting the

large amounts of aluminium proles the company

was able to call on its long-standing partner Sapa

    RC Proles.

After consultations with the various parties respon-

sible for the supporting structure and the steel

beams, Portals engineers calculated the weights,

dimensions, tolerances and stability of the aluminium

proles, as well as the shape of the di es. During this

stage of the project, which lasted for six months,

Sapa provided technical advice and assistance.

In 2005 the assembling of the profiles started.

Sapa not only extruded but also painted the proles

before they were assembled. Aluminium proles

ranging from 8 kg to 128 g p er running metre were

used, amounting to 148 tonnes of aluminium in all.

The actual installation of the roof elements followed

the pace of the Spanish main contractor who as-sembled and erected the steel beams of the roof.

Each time one of the vaults with its span of 85 me-

tres was completed, a new part of the roof s tructure

could be built on top of the beams. It was essential

that the roof elements could compensate for any

unevennesses and deviations in the shape of the

beams themselves. The top layer of aluminium and

glass was only tted at the very end, after the entire

vaulting and all loadbearing structures had been fully

completed. Sapa is proud of its contribution to t he

construction of the new Guillemins station in Lige.

    Aeroporto de Beja

    Beja, Portugal

On 15 April 2011 the Portuguese airport of Beja

started operating flights to the United Kingdom

and Cape Verde. The Aeroporto de Beja is the only

airport in Alentejo, which is the largest region in

Portugal and stretches from Lisbon all the way t o

    the Algarve.

This airport is set to attract low cost carriers to

help develop local tourism in the vast region. It also

aspires to become a logistics service provider to

companies that are based in the hinterland of Port

of Sines and are developing business across Europe.

This infrastructure project is based on a contem-

porary architectural concept. Partly due to the use

of materials supplied by Sapa Building System, the

building satises the strictest thermal and acoustic

performance requirements and, at the same time,

    meets all security standards.

Project: Terminal WA, Perth AirportArchitect: Hassell Studios

    City: Perth - Australia

    Fabricator/Installe

    Sapa Building System gets

    a ying start Down under

Australia and New Zealand may be on the other

side of the planet but that hasnt stopped Sapa

Building System from entering a new and exciting

market. The new Terminal WA at Perth Airport, a key

infrastructure project in Australia and New Zealand,

presented itself as an ideal opportunity for forging

ahead into new territory. The new airport terminal wil l

use both standard and blast mitigation curtain wall

systems and is the rst successful project secured

by the collaboration between Sapa Building System

    and Faade Directions.

Australias total market for extruded aluminium

proles is around 150,000 tonnes per year. Given

the fact that the countrys land mass is equal to that

of the United States of America and larger than

Western Europe, this does present some logistical

    challenges.

Add to this the fact that the Australian building

codes and standards are swinging toward more en-

ergy efcient building design and operation, and the

time was right for Sapa Building System to launch a

mixture of thermal break and solid systems.

The new $ 120m domestic terminal building at

Perth Airport has a single level layout with high

ceilings designed to exploit natural light via a glazedfaade over 7m high and long banks of roof lights.

Sapas blast mitigation curtain wall system provides

elegant and effective protection for building oc-

cupants on the land side. The use of deep mullion

proles for the vertical curtain wall and roof lights

allows free spans without the need to rely on bulky

support structures. The consistent and minimal

sightline dimensions across all areas of the faade

optimise natural light transmission and provide

external views from within the building.

    Railway station

    Zbeh, Czech Republic

The historical railway station of Zbeh was built in

1834 and has recently been refurbished, maintain-

ing the original features. The glazed tower with a

clock, designed by engineer and architect Miloslav

Tempr, is now the dominant feature of the build-

ing. Sapa Building System supplied Avantis 55 for

    Enfdha Hammamet International Airport

    Enfdha, Tunisia

    Endha-Hammamet International Airport is located

about 40 kilometres southwest of Hammamet. Con-

struction began in 2007 and the airport opened on

1 December 2009. The building reects the new

direction Tunisia has taken and is widely considered

    a symbol of modernity.

The airport includes a 72,000m apron area capable

of accommodating 18 aircraft. The remote apron

area, which measures 57,000m, can handle 14

aircraft. There are 18 passenger boarding bridges

complete with check-in counters, baggage carou-

    sels, immigration and customs booths.

The extensive use of glazing allows light to perme-

ate the whole of the interior space. A large patio in

the centre of the building and gardens between the

runway and departure lounges offer passengers a

chance to relax. The interior decoration is a blend of

traditional Tunisian and modern decorating styles.

Sapa Building System supplied various products for

the airports auxiliary buildings, including the metal

workshop, the president building and re station.
