Mobile Handsets

Can make and receive telephone calls wirelessly.

Kinds – ULC (Bar), Feature (Bar), Smartphone (Android/Windows).

1.8 billion mobile cellphones.

Anatomy of Mobile Handsets Mobile handsets are like Human bodies

– have Brain (Processor), Eyes (Camera), Hands (RAM), Storage (ROM/Expandable Memory), Energy (Battery).

Parts – Processor ROM RAM

Chipset Display Battery

Page 7: Training material

Chipsets ICs that manage the data flow between the processor,

memory and peripherals.

allows handset's components, including components on the motherboard, to communicate with each other.

For smartphones - MTK (6592 x 8, 6582 x 4, 6572 x 2), Spectra (7731 x 4, 7715 x 1), Qualcomm (many).

For Feature and Bar - 6261 A (128 + 64 Mb, Edge + Java), 6261 D (32+32 Mb, GPRS), 6261 M (24+32 Mb) from MTK.

6531 C (Java, no edge), 6531 D (32+32, GPRS), 6531 DA (32+32, GPRS) from Spectra.

Processor

Processor is the ‘brain’ of the smartphone.

Capable of executing a program. Interprets the information from the hardware, makes the appropriate services available to other parts of the system.

Higher core, better. ARM, Intel, AMD are few manufacturer companies.

Display Resistive and Capacitive – human skin sensitive

ones are Capacitive with better sensitivity.

TFT – thin-film transistor. transistor is located next to each pixel, allowing it to be turned on and off individually. Ensures faster response time and greater contrast.

IPS (in plane switching) - has a functionality of firm and visibility from all angles.

AMOLED - AMOLED deals in better brightness and power saving.

Full lamination – all black. OGS = one glass solution (display +touchpad+

glass protection).

Display (continued.)

Based on Resolution – USUALLY –

FHD (full high-definition) – 1920 x 1200 – 5’’ and above.

HD – 720 x 1200 – 4.5’’ – 5.5’’ qHD – 540 x 960 – 4.5’’ – 5.5’’ FWVGA – 480 x 854 – 4’’ – 5.5’’ WVGA – 480 x 800 – 3.5’’ – 4’’ HVGA – 320 x 480 – 3.5’’

Camera Mega pixels define the camera quality. Camera of handsets has resolution as well. Such as, Micromax Canvas Hue – primary has 8 MP with 3264 x 2448 pixels. Based on Sensors, the quality varies as well.

Different Sensors – Sony (Expensive), OV(medium), OA sensors.

Manual focusing and Auto focusing.

RAM & ROM

RAM – Random Access Memory - Processing memory for processor – does multi-tasking with higher RAM.

Analogy - Man fielding and about to catch balls – higher number of hands, higher number of balls to be caught.

ROM – Internal Memory – storage of stuff like photos, songs, apps, videos. Complies with External Storage (Expandable memory), if plugged-in.

Page 15: Training material
Page 16: Training material

How to relate all the components using an analogy?

RAM is the number of hands, ROM is the storage of balls at source end, fielding is executed by brain or processor – does the combination of running, seeing and catching the balls.

Operating System (OS)

Software that manages computer hardware and software resources and provides common services for computer programs.

Interacts with humans (views in human understanding on front end) and machine part (runs the codes and executes from backend), both by bridging the gap for executing necessary.

OS (Continued) Android – by google (original design

manufacturer or ODM) and then bought by companies and customized by them such as Tizen, Cyanogen etc. As a result, that seamless connectivity is lost.

Apple – OS is IOS – Apple server directly connected to OS. Works faster.
