SUI started in Portugal in Minho region, in 2005

•More than 30000 vineyards growers•29000 ha of vineyards (51945 parcels)

In 2005 the SUI Portugal identified:

•Poor quality of training material•Trainings too much theoretical•Training subjects not updated


In 2006 SUI and DRAPN (Ministry of Agriculture delegation in North decide:

• To build up a demo farm in Felgueiras•Use the Demo Farm for training on Safe Use of Pesticides




FELGUEIRASDemo FarmMain objective:• People can get individual solutions to solve their specific needs for a Safe Use of Pesticides after a training in a Demo Farm.Specific ObjectivesShow that Safe Use of Pesticides is:

•Easy to do – any farmer can do it!•It is a profitable investment – consumer is demanding it!•It is not expensive

Training Session Preparation

In 2009 SUI and DRAPC (Ministry of Agriculture delegation in Center) decide:

• To build up a demo farm in Viseu•Use the Demo Farm for training on Safe Use of Pesticides




Viseu

Targets:Target selected by Ministry of Agriculture according growers structure / organization in each region. In Viseu targets were:

•Technicians (officials or private) assisting and training farmers;•Vineyards and pome fruits growers associated in different organizations•Technicians and advisors working in PPP sector


Attendance:2009 – 107 people2010 – 61 People



In 2009 SUI and DRAPALG (Ministry of Agriculture delegation in Algarve) decide:

• To build up 2 demo farm in Tavira and Patacão•Use Demo Farms for training on Safe Use of Pesticides




Patacão

Targets:Target selected by Ministry of Agriculture according growers structure / organization in each region. In Tavira and Patacão targets were:

•Strawberries and raspberries growers.•Garden centers employees using pesticides•Local administration workers (gardens and parks) using pesticides.•Citrus growers

Attendance:2009 – 93 people (Tavira)2010 – 30 people(Tavira) + 57 people (Patacão)



Summary•621 people have attended training in demo farms;

•Absolute satisfaction of attendance and Ministry of Agriculture•Many of attendants have influence on farmers behavior and will cascade the good practices they have watched. (multiply strategy)
