INTRODUCTION

It is an independent regulator

It was established on 20 February 1997

The mission of TRAI is to create and nurture an environment which will enable the quick growth of the telecommunication sector in the country

One of the major objectives is to provide a transparent policy environment

In 2000, the TDSAT was constituted through an amendment of the 1997 act

The primary objective of TDSAT's establishment was to release TRAI from adjudicatory and dispute settlement functions in order to strengthen the regulatory framework

Why trai was formed ?

NTP 1994 – DoT was the policy maker and competitor to private entrants

Private enterprises were discouraged to enter the telecom market

Rural telecommunications suffered the most

To regulate & provide guiding principles to service providers

To ensure the interests of consumers of Telecom services

NDNC/DNC

NDNC: an opportunity to limit the telemarketing calls they receive

DNC:  telemarketers are prohibited from calling in most circumstances. The list is maintained by the National Do Not Call Registry of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)

DO NOT CALL OR DO NOT Disturb

WHY ??

The authority been receiving complaints from various quarters regarding telemarketing calls and unsolicited SMSs

Disturb the recipients, intrude into their privacy and impose a cost

the Authority initiated a consultation process with all the

stakeholders and came out with a comprehensive regulation called the Telecom Unsolicited Commercial Communications Regulations in June 2007

FEATURES - DNC

Subscribers will get registered in NDNC through telecom operators and it will be effective after 45 days

Registry by voice by dialing number ‘1909’ or by sending SMS to this number

Telemarketers will do scrubbing their calling list through the NDNC site before making actual costs / SMSs to subscribers

To discourage telemarketers from making calls to numbers registered in Do Not Call list, a provision has been made for prescribing higher tariff

The defaulter telemarketer could also face disconnection of telecom service

MNP MNP stands for Mobile Number Portability

MNP in India became available from 01st January 2011

It allows to transfer the existing mobile phone number from one network provider to another

MNP will incur a charge of Rs 19

It takes 7 days to port the number

Some of the Advantages:- It enables mobile subscribers to retain their mobile

number

It empowers the consumer to be a lifelong owner of his phone number

Better addressing of grievances to retain subscribers

For the month of January, the maximum number of requests in Zone-I (North and West India) were received in Gujarat at 4 Lakhs

Jammu & Kashmir registered the lowest number of requests at 2,534 but that is expected, since it has one of the lowest user base

In Zone-II (South and East India), West Bengal leads with 8 Lakhs customers requesting for number porting till date, followed by Kolkata, which received 4 Lakhs requests. There were just 6536 requests from the North East

Consumer Protection

As per the Sixth Amendment made to Telecom Consumers Protection, Regulation, 2013 following provisions are regulated :

1. Deactivation of Mobile Telephone Connections of Prepaid Consumers due to non – usage

2. Deactivation of Mobile Telephone Connections of Postpaid Consumers due to non – usage

3. Grace period for re-activation

STATISTICAL DATAThe no. of telephone subscribers in India declined from 937.70 millions at the end of Sept-12 to 895.51 millions at the end of Dec-12. Further in the month of Jan-13 it declined to 893.15 millions

TELE-DENSITY

The Urban Tele-density has declined from 161.13 as on 30.09.2013 to 149.90 as on 31.12.2013

The Rural Tele-density has declined from 40.36 to 39.85

The overall Tele-density has declined from 77.04 as on Sept-12 to 73.34 as on Dec-12

REVENUE Monthly Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) for

GSM service increased by 3.03% from Rs.95 in QE Sept-12 to Rs.98 in QE Dec-12

ARPU for CDMA service increased by 2.80% from Rs.78 in QE Sept-12 to Rs.80 in QE Dec-12

Gross Revenue of Telecom Service Sector has been Rs.52858.39 Crore, decrease of 0.15% in GR as compared to last quarter

MOBILE TV Mobile television is television watched on a small

handheld or mobile device

It include features like downloading TV programs and podcasts from the internet and the ability to store programming for later viewing

The first pocket-sized mobile television which had a 2-inch CRT screen was sold in January 1977 for less than £100 in the UK

Mobile TV is one of the features provided by many 3G phones

LOOKING FORWARD

The Digitization of cable TV network has already started; there will be complete transition to Digital Cable TV By 31.12.2014

It does not have the power to impose penalties on service providers for failing to adhere to rules , which is to change soon
