The Trade Technology Business Show 2007 was conducted at Galfar International Convention

Centre, Hotel Le Meridien, Kochi from September 27 – 29, 2007. The Meet was greatly

appreciated by the SME sector of the State. TTBS 2007 succeeded in creating a platform for the

industrialists in our State to have in-depth interaction and one to one meetings with the Business

Houses / Buyers / Trade Associates / Trade Representatives of Foreign embassies from all over

the Country and Abroad.

The Meet also provided the opportunity for creating awareness on the current technologies and

machineries in the respective sectors and also to know about the international products standards.

By the time the Meet concluded, many of the Sellers were able to bag orders from National and

International Buyers; many more had promising trade enquiries.

The Business Show highlighted the industrial agility and knowledge based skills of Kerala to the

rest of India and the international trading community. The advances in technology, the drive to

reach out competitively and the creation of an enabling business environment have contributed to

Kerala evolving as a global destination for competence in the manufacturing sector.

Welcome to H.E. Governor of Kerala

The TTBS 2007 was a part of Government of Kerala’s effort to promote the State’s Small &

Medium Enterprises in the global markets and help the manufacturing sector to access larger

markets, introduce latest technology and machinery for their products and to know about

international products standards. There is no disputing fact that the Small & Medium Enterprises

in the State has contributed in large measure towards the economic development and growth of

the State.

To survive in the changed competitive economic order, the SME sector has to continually evolve

through adoption of better technologies, reducing costs and improving quality in order to tap new

markets globally for their sustainable growth. This is especially relevant for the traditional sector

within the State and other sectors where the State has inherent advantages in terms of potential

for rapid growth. Hence the need for an urgent growth to explore new markets, increased access

to existing one and emerging opportunities to ensure a rapid growth in employment generation

has become essential.

The business meet aimed at bringing together buyers across India and the globe, so that the

buyers can interact directly with the Sellers from the Small and Medium Enterprises of Kerala.

The other objective of the TTBS was to introduce new technologies to Small and Medium

manufacturers and there by increase their competitiveness. Currently, it is difficult for the Small

and Medium Enterprises to access foreign technology and use state-of-the-art equipment. The

Government intended to bring new technology to their doorsteps.

The Meet provided a platform for the industrial enterprises to have in-depth interactions and one

to one meetings with buyers, industrialists and trade associations from India and Abroad, thereby

giving them an insight to international markets and the buyers’ requirements. The Meet also

helped the State’s manufacturing sector to know more about the current technologies and

machinery in their respective sector, the international products standards for benchmarking our

products. This enabled our SMEs to conceive in implementing international quality standards to

access international markets. The event also emphasized the change in perception of Kerala from

a consumerist society to a manufacturing State.

The Department of Industries, Government of Kerala in its role as a facilitator to the SME sector

had organised this Meet in association with Kerala Bureau of Industrial Promotion (K-BIP),

Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC), Kerala State Industrial

Infrastructural Development Corporation (KINFRA).

Seven sectors of Kerala’s industry showcased at the TTBS 2007. The sectors were ‘Food and

Agro Processing’, ‘ Ayurveda and Herbal’, ‘Coir’, ‘Handlooms’, ‘Handicrafts’, ‘Bamboo and

Screw Pine’ and ‘Rubber and Rubber Products’. The Show also had an exhibitor section in

which over seventy exhibitors from India (outside Kerala) and abroad showcased their

machinery and technology in the seven chosen sectors.

Inauguration

The Food and Agro Processing products showcased were Spices and its products, organic and

health products, dairy and confectionary products, agriculture products, food processing and

packing equipment, kitchen equipment and table ware, refrigeration, poultry farm equipment and

supplies.

Inauguration of Stalls

The Ayurveda and Herbal products were herbal oils, cosmetics, therapeutically services, spa

centres, siddha and naturopathy. The Coir products were coir mats and carpets, mesh matting,

coco logs, coir matting, coir yarn and pith, non woven coir products, coir interiors, needled felt,

coir fender, coir braid, coir ropes and coir brushes.

The handloom products were furnishing materials, fashion wear, traditional and designer sarees,

dhotis, and interior furnishing material. The Handicraft products were coconut wood and shell

based products, wood handicraft, bell metal products, sandalwood products, elephants carved in

rose wood and so on. Bamboo and Screwpine Products were bamboo curtains, cane and bamboo

furniture, mural paintings and bamboo interiors. The Rubber and rubber products were tyres,

tubes, balloons toys, gloves, foam rubber products, conveyor belts, automobile product parts,

condoms and so on.

The TTBS 2007 was also able to create a proper marketing avenue for the traditional SME sector

as well as the other sectors for an interaction with the renowned names at the National and

Global level, face to face, so that they were able to develop a sustainable business relationship.

This also avoided the intermediaries between the manufacturers and the Buyers thereby reducing

the effective cost of the product. The modern sectors like Processed Food, Rubber, Garments etc.

were also able to showcase their products through this Meet.

The Department of Industries and other related organisations along with the entrusted Buyer

Sourcing Agency had worked in tandem which made the event a grand success. The efforts put

in by the team of organizers succeeded very well which is evident from the various media reports

and the participation from both the Buyer as well as the Seller side.

The registrations of the Manufacturing Units (Sellers) from the State were done through the

respective District Industries Centres in each District. Only selected Sellers were allowed to

register from each District. There were registrations from all the 14 districts of the State. The

maximum number of registrations received was from Ernakulam (26 Nos.) followed by

Alappuzha (15 Nos.) and Kozhikode (13 Nos.). The maximum registration in the sector was for

Food & Agro Processing (41 Nos.) followed by Ayurveda / Herbal (17 Nos.) and Handicrafts (17

Nos.).

TTBS 2007 Stalls

The Sellers were allotted full fledged individual cubicles enabling them to display their products

and technologies and also to interact individually to the visiting Buyer. They were given separate

individual Air Conditioned constructed 2m X 2m stalls. The total stalls that were given to the

Sellers were 113 Nos.

Similarly, the technology providers were given 52 Nos. 3m X 3m Air conditioned stall space and

the international exhibitors displayed their products and technologies through 23 Nos. display

stalls. The technology providers included Research Institutes like NID, CIFT etc.

We had received response from 387 Nos. of Buyers, out of which 284 Nos. had participated in

the Meet. This included 212 Nos. from outside Kerala State, 72 Nos. International Buyers. The

foreign delegates were from Thailand, Oman, Poland, Netherlands, USA, UAE, UK, Canda, Sri

Lanka, Belgium etc.

The major companies participated in TTBS 2007 included Videocon Industries Ltd, Mumbai,

Asiatec Company, Chennai, Alinz Buying House, New Delhi, UBE Industries, Hyderabad,

Lanktrad International (P) Ltd., Sri Lanka, Industrial Development Board, Sri Lanka, Brabados

International Trading Company, Thailand, Shalimar Group, UAE, Atlas Group, UAE, Dhonburi

Rajabhat University, Thailand, Grafix Intrnational, UAE, Eves, UAE etc.

Inaugural Address by H.E. Governor of Kerala

H.E.Shri. R.L.Bhatia, Governor of Kerala in his inaugural address mentioned that Kerala should

transform itself from a consumer State into a competent and competitive State. He said that

small and medium entrepreneurs should have the exposure to the latest technological

advancements happening in other parts of the globe. H.E. the Governor expressed the hope that

the Show could provide an opportunity for the manufacturers to gain access to the National and

International market and lauded the effort taken by the Government to focus on the technology.

Presidential Address by Hon’ble Minister (Ind & Comm))

Shri. Elamaram Kareem, Hon’ble Minister for Industries & Commerce in his presidential address

mentioned that Kerala was developing an industrial friendly atmosphere in the State. The State

had a favorable climate, abundant skilled labour, better connectivity, sufficient raw materials that

could facilitate the growth of small and medium industries in the State. The Hon’ble Minster

also said that the SMEs were not getting accessed to modern technology and new technology

should be adopted by the traditional industries of the State.

Shri.Sebastian Paul, Member of Parliament and Shri.C.M.Dinesh Mani, Member of Legislative

Assembly delivered their Special Address. Shri. A.P.M. Abdul Rahim, State President, Kerala

State Small Industries Association felicitated. Shri. T. Balakrishnan IAS, Principal Secretary

(Industries & Commerce) formally welcomed the dignitaries and participants and Shri.

P.H.Kurian IAS, Secretary (Industries) proposed the vote of thanks. The inaugural function

commenced with a live curtain raiser programme and a presentation.

H.E.Shri.R.L.Bhatia, Governor of Kerala also inaugurated the Seller exhibition and visited the

product and technology display by the participants.

Visit of Hon’ble Minister (Home & Tourism)

Shri. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Hon’ble Minister for Home & Tourism, Government of Kerala and

Shri.K.V.Thomas, Member of Legislative Assembly visited the Seller exhibition, technology and

international pavilions and had interaction with the participants.

As part of the event, a Seller Data Bank and CD ROM was brought out giving the details about

the participating registered Kerala Sellers. Also a CD ROM was brought out on the detailed

information about the seven key sectors being focused in the Meet. A Buyer Seller Meet was

organised on the second day of the Event which was chaired by Shri.T.Balakrishnan, Principal

Secretary (Industries & Commerce).

The business interactions during the three days of the Meet were found extremely successful. As

per the feed back received from the participants, 492 enquiries were received and about 346 firm

orders are expected.

The three day Trade Technology Business Show 2007 focusing the seven key sectors in the

Small & Medium Enterprises of Kerala State was able to showcase our State as a strong

manufacturing State irrespective of the perception that it is a consumer State. The Small and

Medium Entrepreneurs were able to know about the current technologies and also international

product standards in their respective sectors. As decided and announced during the Meet, Trade

Technology Business Show will be conducted as a bi annual Event.
