    The European Union

Should the UK leave the EU?

    by Aditi Mehendale

The European Union (EU ) is a group of countries

in Europe that have open borders, which means

that you dont need a separate visa to go to each

country. Most of the countries also share the same

currency, i.e. the euro, although the British use

sterling. There are both advantages and

disadvantages to the UK being part of the EU.

Recently, the UK Independence Party (UKIP ) has

been in the news, and is gaining more and more

    support.

UKIP wants Britain to leave the EU. The

Conservative party are promising a referendum if

they win the next election, which means Britishcitizens who are of age can vote on whether they

want to stay in the Union. Labour and the Liberal

Democrats mainly want to stay. So this week, I

decided to try and find out what the reasons were

    for staying and for leaving.

    UKIP

UKIP are the only party who are officially and

publicly saying that we should leave the EU. Theirreasons for doing so sympathise with the feelings

of some people, and they include getting

resources currently in the EU back to the UK,

being allowed to make stronger trade deals with

other countries, and most importantly, being

allowed to control our own borders.

Currently, anyone living in the EU can come into

the UK without a visa and they can work here too.

This is upsetting some people, especially those

who are unemployed, and who are claiming thatthe chance of them getting a job is decreased by

the number of people settling in the UK from the

    EU.

    Editorial

Hi guys and welcome to another issue of the paperwritten BY students FOR students. This week's themeis national pride. National Pride is the pride you havefor being British. Lots of things make us feel Britishincluding the vast number of expressions we have fortalking about the weather.

So, this week Aditi informs us about the currentsituation of the debate whether England should be partof the European Union, Toni tells us about thebabyPrince George and the greatest British poplegends of all time , School Squirrel claims his ownplinth in Trafalgar square and I finish off with a quiz onwhich teachers you think are most like which dogs. Allthis and more in this week's edition of Team A's TotallyTockington

    Lucy Allan-JonesEditor

There are other reasons, for example, some of the fines thatthe EU are asking member countries to pay are big, heftyand popular with this many people. Zilch. All of this helpsexplain why UKIP have received so much support, theyveactually been asked to take part in a televised debate,

despite not being a major party.

    Why We Should Stay

One of the good things about the EU is that it is easier to

trade, and trade is essential for the economy. Apparently,50% of the UKs trade comes from within the EU.

Another thing is again, jobs. It is said that there areapproximately 3.5 million jobs in the UK that are in some waylinked to the EU. Thats approximately 3.5 million jobs thatcould be lost, and approximately 3.5 million people whocould be made unemployed should we leave the EU. Also, though those who want to leave the EU say there are toomany immigrants, they are conveniently forgetting about the1.4 million Britscurrently in Europe as opposed to the UK.

So there are the facts that you may need to help come

to a conclusion. What do you think?

    Sir Richard Branson

by Henry Allan-JonesSir Richard Branson is an English Businessman

and investor. He is the seventh richest citizen of

the United Kingdom. He is most famous for

being the founder of the Virgin Group, whichincludes over 400 companies.

In 1972 he set up a chain of record shops called

Virgin Records, later known as Virgin

Megastores. In the 1980s, when his business

became more famous, he set up Virgin Atlantic

    and made Virgin Records bigger.

In 1984 Richard decided to make an airway

company called Virgin Atlantic Airways andVirgin Mobile (1999) and Virgin Blue in Australia-

now called Virgin Australia- in 2000.

Richard Branson has attempted many World

    Records including:

    1. Attempting the fastest Atlantic Oceancrossing in the Virgin Atlantic Challenger, which collapsed in British waters.

    2. He then tried again in the Virgin Atlantic

Challenger II, which beat the record bymore than 2 hours.

    3. Crossing the Pacific from Japan toNorthern Canada in a balloon.

    4. Branson set a record by travelling fromDover to Calais in 1 hour 40 minutes and6 seconds. The Top Gear presentersJeremy Clarkson, James May andRichard Hammond, attempted to breakBransons record in an amphibiousvehicle with two outboard motors on the

    back.

Richard Branson also hopes to create a space

line called Virgin Galactic, which will take

passengers to and from space. Richard Branson

said that he himself and his family will be first to

test it out, but this date has been delayed by the

crash of SpaceShipTwo in October 2014.

As you probably know, this weeks theme is

national pride. Now, I am a great patriot, and I

always am proud to be English. However, all

countries have problems, and ours is noexception, as Aditis article showed. Her article

gave a great insight into this issue and it will be

interesting to see how this pans out in future,

WATCH THIS SPACE We also had agreat

article from Alex Jacobi, and I hope everyone is

revising for upcoming exams (year 8)!!! Henrys

article also made me think about how we as

people live with the super-rich and famous. It

shows how lucky we are to have the

opportunities to become people like Richard

Branson, whereas most people from places less

fortunate than ourselves would not have the

luxury of education or even proper food, so that

they can live the life of people like Branson.

Now, just one final comment, I am afraid I

HATE Marmite and I must disagree with its

eating in any situation, national pride or no

    national pride!

    Have a great week everyone!!

    Best of British Inventions?

    by Alex Gooch

In my opinion, this Britishinvention has to be one of the best in the world.Youmaynot believe it, but chocolate has actually been around for nearly all of history. There isevidence that chocolate was first consumed in Mexico as early as 1900bc, but only asa drink. Just like the hot chocolate we drink today, only it wasnt hot! That carried onfor about 3800 years, until just over 150 years ago when, in 1847, the chocolate barwas invented in Britain!

The solid chocolate bar that we eat all

over the world now, was invented by theBristol Company, Fry and Sons, in 1847.They discovered a way to mix somecocoa butter to the cocoa powder andadded sugar that made a paste that couldbe moulded, and made into a delicioussolid chocolate bar.

The same Britishcompany was alsoresponsible for the first chocolate Eastereggin this country, in 1873, the Frys chocolate cream bar and the Turkish delight.

Eventually, Cadburys bought out Frys, so sadly today we can no longer buy Fryschocolate. But we can all be proud that Britain gave the world the chocolate bar!!!

    Marmiteby Abby Blackwell

Marmite is a famous British brand with the well-known slogan 'Love it or hate it'. It was made in1902 by Justus von Leibig. HEIGHT:Big Ben is 316 feet high.

    WHERE:Westminster, London, England.

Big Ben is actually not the clock building but the huge bell inside.

It is the WORLDS largest four faced clock. Just the minute hand

alone on Big Ben is 220 pounds and over 12 feet long. Every year,

this hand travels approximately 118 miles. It is party of the Palace

of Westminster but people are not allowed inside.

    The Shard

WHEN:The construction started in 2003 and it was opened February 1st 2013.

HEIGHT:The Shard stands 309 metres complete with 87 floors.

    WHERE:London, England.

The Shard has 11,000 glass panels and 306 flights of stairs. It is the tallest building in Western

Europe. Construction workers found a fox, who they named Romeo near the top of the

building which had survived on the food that the workers left.

WHEN:It started construction in 2000 and opened in 2003.

HEIGHT:55 metres high and covers 3.9 acres.

    WHERE:Cornwall, England.

The Eden project is basically a large amount of massive greenhouses, housing lots of tropical

flowers and plants. One of the two biomes is the equivalent of 35 football pitches. 85,000

tonnes of soil was used for each biome which is approximately 616 blue whales! The biggest

biome is large enough to hold the Tower of London and tall enough for a tower of 11 double

decker buses and long enough for a nose to nose jam of 24 buses.WOW!

    Inspirational British Drummersby Roshan Patel

Phil Collins is a man of many talents. Not only is he a singer, songwriter, author and actor but

he is also one of the top British drummers. He has played in a variety of bands and has had a

successful career as a solo artist. Phil was born in London in 1951 and got his first drum kit at

the age of 5. In his early days of drumming he couldn't read conventional music instead he

used his own method of playing along to music. I am inspired by Phil Collins because he can

sing and drum at the same time. This is quite a rare talent.

John Bonham is one of the most famous rock drummers. He played for a heavy metal band

called Led Zeppelin. John played the drums with large sticks which he called trees and with his

hands to make different sounds. He composed a famous solo called Moby Dick which lasted

for 30 minutes. This solo has since been used by different rappers in their own compositions.

Sadly John Bonham was only 32 when he died. He is buried in his home town of Worcester.

Instead of flowers on his grave fans have left lots of drum sticks as a tribute.

Keith Moon played for a band called The Who. In 2011 he was voted the second greatest

drummer in history. He was known for his unique drumming style and destructive behaviour.

At the end of most gigs he would break all the skins on his drums and then push the drum set

over. Once he filled his drum set with water and put some goldfish inside. Keith became

known as Moon the Loon. I have recently played one of the The Who's songs called MyGeneration. I enjoy playing this song because the tempo is very fast!

Everything Stops for Tea at TMS

    Totally Tockington Tea Tasting

    by George Symonds

Britain loves tea. British people find it delicious. On a typical day 14 million cups of teaare drunk in England alone. I am a big tea fan. I love it!! There is something about it

which is scrumptious. Earlier this week I took some random British students and asked

them try my different types of tea. These were the results:

Green Tea Peppermint Assam Camomile Earl Grey

Olivia C No Revolting No No No

Antonia H-G No Definitely Not No No No

Rachel S No No Refused to try Yes Yes

Henry A-J No No Yes Yes Yes

George S Ok Yes Yes Yes Yes

From these results we can see that: Girls dont like tea

    Peppermint is disgusting

Henry is a fellow tea drinker

Olivia and Antonia are not tea drinkers

So I advise you all if you fancy a hot beverage, go for the British cup of tea. Now go

    my tea allies. Drink up!
