The Bacha Posh By Aditi Mehendale This week we are looking at superstitions. Now we all know about black cats and Friday the 13 th , but I thought I would take a deeper look at a lesser known, Afghan tradition (which quite possibly belongs to other cultures as well), and superstition. In many cultures, a boy is valued, quite wrongly (in my opinion), far more than a girl. A boy is the ‘breadwinner’, the greatest responsibility of a girl is to bear children; and she is often used as ‘currency’. In fact, considering how much rides on the girl in these countries, it is strange as to why they are so unwanted. As my source of information is researched in it, I am going to use Afghanistan as my example. In Afghanistan, the roles of boys and girls, men and women, are very different. Men can go out in the world, get jobs, be free; women will look after the children, the house, the guests, cook, clean, and basically act like a servant in her own home. The women’s role is also to bring children into the world, and this is when the bacha posh comes in. Bacha posh means ‘dressed up like a boy’. In a mostly segregated community, where women live to be married to husbands they almost never know, but don’t interact with men at all, reputation is everything. A good reputation means a good life. But in the mainly illiterate third-world country, a good reputation includes having at least one boy in the family. In Afghanistan, many believe that woman can choose the gender of an unborn child. If a woman is strong-willed, she can choose to have sons. A family with only daughters is a family with a weak-willed wife, and a weak-willed wife reflects badly on the husband. In order to avoid this, many families will dress up one of their daughters as a boy. This could be to stop gossip and rumours circling. It could also be because the family needs an additional income, and a girl cannot work, but it’s also been known for a ‘bacha posh’ to be a playmate for her brother, or purely because her parents want to give her the experience of being a boy, being on the other side. Another purpose for the bacha posh is superstition, or more commonly known as magic. Alongside the special potions that some doctors offer (one cited in my book was a woman called Dr. Fareiba, the maker of sons) it is believed that turning one of your daughters into a ‘boy’ will ensure that your next child will be one too something about a mother seeing a boy everyday. This is a widely- believed and common practice, and throughout my source there are women and mothers, claiming that it is one that has worked, indisputable. The Bacha Posh

    By Aditi Mehendale

This week we are looking at superstitions. Now we all

know about black cats and Friday the 13th, but I thought I

would take a deeper look at a lesser known, Afghan

tradition (which quite possibly belongs to other cultures as

    well), and superstition.

In many cultures, a boy is valued, quite wrongly (in my

opinion), far more than a girl. A boy is the breadwinner,

the greatest responsibility of a girl is to bear children; and

she is often used as currency. In fact, considering how

much rides on the girl in these countries, it is strange as to

    why they are so unwanted.

As my source of information is researched in it, I am going

to use Afghanistan as my example. In Afghanistan, the

roles of boys and girls, men and women, are very different.

Men can go out in the world, get jobs, be free; women will

look after the children, the house, the guests, cook, clean,

and basically act like a servant in her own home. The

womens role is also to bring children into the world, and

this is when the bacha posh comes in.

Bacha posh means dressed up like a boy. In a mostly

segregated community, where women live to be married to

husbands they almost never know, but dont interact with

men at all, reputation is everything. A good reputation

means a good life. But in the mainly illiterate third-world

country, a good reputation includes having at least one

boy in the family. In Afghanistan, many believe that

woman can choose the gender of an unborn child. If a

woman is strong-willed, she can choose to have sons. A

family with only daughters is a family with a weak-willed

wife, and a weak-willed wife reflects badly on the husband.

In order to avoid this, many families will dress up one of

their daughters as a boy. This could be to stop gossip and

rumours circling. It could also be because the family needs

an additional income, and a girl cannot work, but its also

been known for a bacha posh to be a playmate for her

brother, or purely because her parents want to give her the

experience of being a boy, being on the other side.

Another purpose for the bacha posh is superstition, or

more commonly known as magic. Alongside the special

potions that some doctors offer (one cited in my book was

a woman called Dr. Fareiba, the maker of sons) it is

believed that turning one of your daughters into a boy will

ensure that your next child will be one too something

about a mother seeing a boy everyday. This is a widely-

believed and common practice, and throughout my source

there are women and mothers, claiming that it is one that

    has worked, indisputable.

Whats on the Menu for Tigers?

    By Anya Constantinescu

    The Menu.

Tigers eat a variety of food; these foods are all meaty. Did you know that tigers usual prey

can be 20kg in weight. These sizes could be a buffalo, species of deer, moose, pigs,

horses, cows and goats. They occasionally eat rhino calves, leopards and elephant!

    How do they feed?

Tigers usually stalk their prey from behind and wait until the moment is rightAt last the

tiger will take its shot by pouncing on it and then enjoying lunch.

    Strange facts!

    1. Did you know that tigers consume about 50 deer a year (thats about one each

    week)!

    2. Tigers can eat up to 40kg of meat at a time!

Tigers also eat termites, as an afternoon snack!

The Tiger who Came to Tea! By Lily Edwards

This issue as the theme is partly about tigers, I am going to review my FAVOURITE book of all time The

Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr. An interesting fact is that Judith Kerr also wrote a series of books

which are my other FAVOURITE books all about a cat called Mog!

I read this book when I was very little and it is definitely one of my first memories of story time.

This story is about a little girl called Sophie who is having a lovely tea at home with her mum. Suddenly,

the doorbell rings and Sophie and her mum try and guess who on earth it could bethey decide to open

the door and on the doorstep is a big tiger. Sophie asks him in to join them for tea. He is a friendly tiger

but the problem with tigers is that they eat a huge amount of food, and this tiger did not have very good

table manners I wont spoil it by telling you exactly what he does but the story ends with Sophie, her

mum and her dad going out to a caf for sausages and chips for tea instead! My favourite part is on the

very last page where there is a drawing of the tiger playing a pink clarinet and he is saying something

have a look yourself and tell me if you think it is funny too!

This story is easy to read, very funny and very imaginativeimagine what YOU would do if a tiger came

to tea (a friendly one of course!). Although this book is meant for quite young children, I still love this

story now I am 8 and I think that even some of the year 8s might even enjoy reading it!

This book is in the library at school go and borrow it NOW and I really hope you enjoy reading it as

    much as I have!

    The Tiger-eating Monster

    By Hannah Williams

There was once a tiger-eating monster called Burffy

and one day he was having lunch (which was a

tiger) and he was about to start eating when the

tiger spoke. Hello he said, please dont eat me.

    Why shouldnt I? said Burffy.

Because there are lots of different foods out there

    you know said the tiger.

    Like what? Burffy said.

Fruits, vegetables, lots of un-meat like things said

    the tiger.

    Ooh, sounds nice Burffy said.

It does, does it not? replied the tiger.

Burffy followed the tiger into the Jungle forest,

known as the Jungle of Doom, and possibly Death.

He picked a lot of veg and fruit. Just as he was

picking a plum, a shadow appeared and took him

away. The tiger followed after him, picking up the

fruit and putting it in a basket. The shadow carried

Burffy into a nice sweet place, dropped him and ran

off. Burffy had fallen asleep and lay there for hours.

The next day he woke up to find the tiger standing

over him. He stood up with a jump and looked

around him. He liked it much more than his old

home, and decided to live in the valley of flowers

from now on. He sat there with the tiger in the sun,

looking at the land and eating fruit and vegetables.

    White Tigers

    By Harry Mather

The white tiger is not a separate sub-species nor

is it an albino animal. It is a Bengal tiger that

comes from India and has reduced pigmentation.

The tiger has white fur instead of the usual orange

    fur.

The stripes on a white tiger are similar to a normal

tiger and no two tigers have the same markings.

White tigers are born when both parents carry the

    unusual gene for white colouring.

The first sighting of white tigers was in the middle

of the 16th century but only a small number of

sightings have been recorded in the past 100

    years.

The Siberian tiger is the largest of the tiger

species however there is no scientific proof of any

white Siberian tigers living in the wild and none

have been born in captivity. It may be that the

white gene that exists in Bengal tigers does not

live in Siberian tigers. The natural birth of a white

Bengal tiger is extremely unusual in the wild.

Many white tigers live in zoos and safari parks

around the world, including West Midlands Safari

Park. It is unlikely that a white tiger could survive

in the wild due to its different colouring as it would

be attacked by other tigers or shot by poachers

for its beautiful markings on the fur.

    Editor-in-Chiefs Comment

Wow a huge issue this week, with loads of

great articles. One that stood out to me though

is Aditis. Her article is a living example of how

we still dont realise how lucky we are to live in

a stable and fair country like this. For women to

go to such lengths as to dress up their children

as boys, so as just to be respected shows that

we as a world still have a long way to go in

    order to achieve equality.

It is also amazing, as Aditi says, considering

how much women do for the world, how they

seem to be so unwanted in some parts of the

world. It just goes to show how we are so far

from achieving what is one of our countrys

leaders main aims in life. Aditis article really

    shows this.

Hope you enjoy this bumper issue of TT!

Adopting a Leopard by Rachel Shutt

The WWF (World Wildlife Foundation) helps

endangered animals throughout the world that

may become extinct. Money which people give

helps support the protection of animals. It is used

for restoring areas of rainforest and jungles where

animals live. It also helps to train people to work

against poaching. Animals are killed for their furs,

    tusks, medicine, decoration and myths.

There are a number of animals to adopt but Im

going to look at the adoption of a leopard.

There are only 35 Amur leopards in the world

making them one of the worlds most endangered

large cats. These cats live in Eastern Russia.

These leopards have long legs, as they need to

be able to run through deep snow to catch their

food. They eat deer, badgers and wild boar.

From 3 a month you can adopt a leopard and

help improve the environment where they live.

In return you receive posters of your leopard,

cuddly toy and new letters of the WWF work they

    do.

    Camouflage by Otis Walker

Camouflage is something that blends into

something else so you cant see it, for example

like a green and brown tank in the grass because

    it fits in:

Camouflage is used when something or someone

    wants to be hidden

Lots of animals are camouflaged so they can fit in

    to their background

and hide from potential dangers. Tigers also have

great camouflage in their natural habitat.

Camouflage is also used as a suit for soldiers so

they fit in to their background. Camouflage is a

very useful thing to use if in the army or if there is

an endangered animal the animal would very

probably be camouflaged into their background.

    BORN FREE by Georgina Loring

Born Free foundation was set up by Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers after they became animal

aware when making the film Born Free. Now it is run by their son, Will Travers; every year they

help thousands of animals around the world.

    Roque the tiger

As you may know, each year, Year Three adopt an animal from Born Free. One year it was a tiger,

Roque the tiger. As a tiny cub, in 1998, Roque (pronounced Rocky) was put on sale at a Spanish

pet shop. Born Free rescued him and now hes living in Bannerghatta tiger sanctuary in India.

Roques enclosure is next to three other tigers to keep him company Madesha, Gopal and

Jawariah. He is going to be seventeen years old later in May.

Tigers face many threats, because poachers try to kill them, and now there are only 3,500 left in

the wild. Poachers want their beautiful fur and use their bodies in some Asian medicine. In India

there are around 2,225 tigers. Their homes are cut down for wood, but that doesnt just affect

tigers, in fact it affects lots of animals. Tigers have a bad reputation for attacking people, but they

only do that when their own habitat is threatened.

Its not just tigers that Born Free looks after; they help other big cats such as: lions, leopards and

cheetahs. But they also have elephants, giraffes, gorillas chimps, orcas, turtles, hyenas, wolves,

    polar bears and moon bears!

    How you can help.

ADOPT! Ive adopted a leopard called Kuma and if you like any of the animals above, you adopt

them, and the money raised helps fund Born Free and the vital work they do to help animals. If you

adopt you will receive, a cuddly toy, and your animals full story.

How to Survive a Tiger Attack by Henry Packham

    1) At first stay still and keep quiet. Then try to quietly and slowly

move to a place of safety.

    2) Hide if a tiger is stalking

you. If possible, get into a hiding place such as a vehicle, a

hut, or a narrow space between rocks, where the tiger cannot

    reach you.

    3) Try to out-think the tiger, if it pounces. If a tiger is leaping

through the air at you, figure out where it will land and run to

one side heading for any rocks, trees, or other shelter.

    4) Avoid approaching cubs, as mother tigers can be

    defensive of their young.

    5) If attacked, use a big stick or stone to fight. Be aggressive and as loud as you can. Put your

hands up and stand up tall or on top of something. Tigers do not like to hunt animals that are

bigger than them or that can fight back.

    6) If all else fails, you could just offer the tiger some tea!

    The Tiger

    by Tabitha Huby

    Tiger, tiger burning bright,

In the forest of the night,

    Your symmetrical stripes dazzle me,

But in your eyes, is it hunger I see?

    Are you my prey?

    Or am I yours?

    I hope youre not hungry,

And Im not your first course!

    You live in the forest,

    Dark and dense,

    Humans V Tigers,

    Let the battle commence!

    These forests are becoming

    Less and less,

    Why are we causing you

    So much stress?

    We chop down those forests,

    Your habitat,

    Without a care for you,

    A beautiful cat.

    THE SABRE TOOTHED TIGER

    FACT OR FICTION?

    By Ben Jacobi

Some people think that Sabre-toothed tigers were

imaginary animals. In fact, they did actually exist.

Sabre-toothed tigers are pre-historic animals which

are sadly now extinct. They get their name from their

large canines which grew up to 7 inches long.

These animals were ferocious hunters and

carnivores, pouncing on their prey and sinking their

large teeth for the kill. Their favourite food was deer,

bison and even woolly mammoth. They typically

weighed around 300Kg and lived for between 20 and

    40 years.

The sabre-toothed tigers habitat was North and

South America where they roamed the forests and

grasslands around 10,000 BC. They had no known

predators, other than humans who probably were

responsible for their extinction together with the

climate change of the Ice Age.

There are three subspecies of tiger that are already

extinct. These are the Caspian, Balinese and Javan tigers.

The tigers stripes are unique to each animal and can be

used to identify individuals, in much the same way that our

    fingerprint identifies us.

The word tiger means arrow in the original Persian

    language.

Fewer than half of the cubs born ever live beyond the

    age of two years.

Fossil remains seem to indicate that tigers have been on the

earth for approximately two million years.

    PET TIGERS by Toby Gaulton

My article is about how to look after a tiger and why to have one as a pet.

8 Reasons why you should have a pet tiger.

    1. They are super cute. Like ridiculously cute. 2. They are the perfect family guard dog. If a robber tried to take one on, he would

probably have his head bitten off ! 3. But when not being angry, they are super good pets, because they would act like any

other cat or dog! 4. They would probably eat any meat you had left over from last nights hog roast!! 5. They are extra intelligent. Yep your house cat can perform dressage but these felines

can do a 360! 6. They love hunting. Mr Fox might not be stealing your chickens again? 7. They make a LOT of mess. 8. You can train them to fetch just like a dog.

How to look after your tiger.

They will need: At least 50 acres, water to drink and to play in and at least 15 kg of meat every

    day.

Foods to Cook for Your Mum on Mother's Day by George Symonds

As Mother's Day is coming up soon I have composed a three course meal I shall be cooking as a

present for my Mum. To help you out, I shall walk you through my special starter (which is super

easy) for you to cook for your mum too.

    Pizza-Pops

These fun lollipop-style pizzas are great for a party or a picnic. The combination of peppers and

    tomatoes is delicious.

    Ingredients:

    Pizza dough

    2-3 tbsp tomato puree

    150g of grated cheese

    Half a sliced yellow pepper

    6 red halved cherry tomatoes

    6 yellow halved cherry tomatoes

    Method:

Divide your pizza dough into 12 small balls. Flatten the balls so they form small circles that are approximately 8cm in diameter. Insert a stick into each uncooked dough circle.

Spread the tomato sauce over the circles using the back of a spoon.

Decorate with cheese, peppers and tomatoes.

Cook the pizzas in a preheated oven, 180degrees centigrade gas 4 for 15 minutes.

Now I hope you treat all your mums like a queen and make some fantastic pizza-pops!

    THE PERFECT SCHOOL RUN

    By Alex Jacobi

As I understand it, mums find the common school run rather difficult! Heres a way to make that easier!

    MUCH EASIER!

    1. Mum wakes up at 7:59, 11 minutes to school. OH NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! We havent even had Breakfast! Luckily, all she needs to do is pull a lever just above her head. This lever is connected to the water bucket above my bed in my room.

    2. The water gushes on me, making me wake up with a shock. The water fills up a small plug on the ground, pushing up a spring that pushes up my bed.

    3. As I fall down my bed, I fall through a trapdoor in the ground and I slip into my uniform perfectly placed and held up by two robotic arms attached to the ceiling. I step onto the conveyor-belt that pulls me into the kitchen. While Im standing on the conveyor belt, a robotic arm, stretching out of the wall, holding a comb, pushes my hair back into a perfect quiff!

    4. Once I come to the kitchen I slip into my seat, opposite the table. On said table, another, smaller, conveyor-belt carries bowls of cereal and plates of toast. A piston launches these delicacies into my open mouth.

    5. Finally my chair slips away, leaving me to fall down the trap-door into our basement. Before the Rats begin to nibble at me feet, Im picked up by the collar by a hook connected to a rail on the ceiling of the basement. Once the hook carries me to my destination, Im dropped off over a large piston that I stand on and it lifts me up to the front door. My bag is already hanging there and all I do is just pick it up and . GO!

There we go! The quickest, craziest, easiest, funniest, way to get to school!

What to do on Mothers Day by Abby Blackwell

As Mothers Day is coming up, I thought I would tell you about some things which your mum would

like you to get her. Remember, you dont have to buy anything for her, you could just do some chores.

A card is a definite must, you can get these from almost all shops, and they are very cheap.

Another good buy are flowers, it will always get a smile. Breakfast in bed will always be appreciated.

Do your mums chores, like hanging out the washing or walking the dog A classic is chocolate, Thorntons and Cadburys do very good Easter- themed treats

Take her out for lunch, or just get a take-away for dinner. Buy her some accessories, like a new purse or scarf.

Maybe give her a picture you did, the possibilities are endless!

Dont forget to treat your mum on Sunday!

Invention of the Week by Alex Gooch

    The ladder

You may not know it but ladders have actually been

around for millennia. A rock painting of a Ladder

was found in the spider caves in Spain, painted over

    10,000 years ago!!!

    Ladder world records

Brian Pankey balanced an 8-foot ladder by its apex

on his chin for 2 minutes13.72 seconds and

balanced an 8-foot ladder by its leg on his chin for 1

    minute 55.85 seconds!!!

    Ladder superstition

The superstition of walking under a ladder comes

from the ancient Christian nations. The ladder is

supposed to represent the holy trinity of Father, Son

and Spirit. By walking under a ladder you are

breaking the holy trinity of god.

To undo the bad luck you can:

Spit 3 times through the rungs of the ladder.

Walk backwards under the ladder again.

Or you can cross your fingers until you see a dog.

I think the best way by far to undo the bad luck is to stop believing in superstitions and carry on walking.

    Friday 13th

    by Oliver Shutt

Friday 13th is seen by many as very unlucky. For

    others, very lucky.

The number 13 is an irregular number and

you need 13 witches to make a coven (a

    gathering of witches)

In the bible 13 is considered unlucky as

Judas one of the 12 disciples (who

betrayed Jesus) was the 13 guest of the

    last supper.

In Brazil Friday 13th August is thought to

be worse than any other Friday 13th.

    Agosto (August) rhymes with desgosto

    (sorrow)

    Geoffrey Chaucers book The Canterbury

Tales referenced Friday 13 as a bad day.

In Spain, Friday 13th is seen as a lucky

day. Tuesday 13th is believed to bring

    bad luck.

In Canada Friday 13th is a day of fund

    raising where motorcyclists from Port

    Dover attract many crowds.

Did you know? On Friday 13th September

1940 Buckingham Palace was hit by 5

    German Bombs!

    There are 3 Friday 13ths in 2015 -

February, March and November. None in

    2016.

    Superstitious Food by George Symonds

Hello, and welcome to a dose of weekly food facts. This week, as it is Friday 13th, I thought I should

do an article on (if you read the title) Superstitious foods. Do you touch wood for good luck? Or do

you never eat the last piece of cake? I shall tell you in this article five amazing superstitious foods.

    Garlic

Garlic is not just great to spice up your food and ward off colds - it also wards off bad spirits. If you

want to prevent someone from giving you the Evil Eye and bestowing bad luck on you, you should

always carry some garlic in your pockets. Garlic is also a powerful deterrent for demons,

werewolves and vampires. To protect yourself from vampires, wear bulbs of garlic around your

neck, hang it in windows, rub it on chimneys and keyholes or place wreaths of garlic over your

doors. To protect your newborn baby from evil spirits, hang some garlic in the room.

    Salt

Spilling salt is considered very unlucky. This is probably due to the fact that it was a very expensive

commodity in the past wasting salt was like wasting money! If you spill salt, the only way to turn

your bad luck around is to throw some salt with your right hand over your left shoulder. It is believed

that the salt will go into the devils eyes and blind him from seeing your stupidity and taking your

    soul.

    Eggs

There are many strange beliefs around eggs. In Europe, some farmers plant eggs in their fields or

throw eggshells between the rows of crops to ensure a good harvest. Jews believe that eating an

egg with two yolks will bless you with bearing many children. And; if you want to bake a lovely cake,

do it while the sun is rising and dont throw away the eggshells before the baking is done.

    Bread

Its very important to always mark bread or rolls with a sign of the cross before baking as this will

chase away the devil. In ancient times it was believed that the cross would prevent the devil from

sitting on the loaf and cursing or spoiling the bread. There is some truth to this superstition as

crossing the bread will help the bread rise better in the oven.

    Onions

If you throw onion peelings on the floor, youll throw away your luck. Protect your home from bad

spirits by sticking a small onion full of pins and keeping it in a window. Get rid of warts by rubbing

the edge of an onion on the wart and then throwing it over your right shoulder without looking back -

you will never get warts again.

I have warned you dont do any of these food devils and he will get you!

Its Comic Relief Day today. Do what you can to raise

some money for people less fortunate than yourself!
