    A W E E K IN V I E N N A by Gene DuliiiA telephone call from the travel

agent who arranges details for TCM'sMISSIONARY TOURS s tar ted a wholechain of exciting events! He said,"K. L. M.Airlines will give you a complimentary ticket to Vienna if you wouldlike to go sometime soon!"

After conferences wi th f e ll ow workers in T or on to , the decis ion was madefor me to accept th e offer. 1 left TorontoJanuary 4 and returned January 11 , bu twnat a busy week!

Conferences at Hospitality HouseI arrived in Vienna a t noon, and

went directly to th e Europe an Cen te rfor Evangelism where Bar b Thackstonhad d inner prepared. We spent the restof the afternoon and on into t he nightdiscussing the work in Europe. DeweyThackston brought me up to date on hisrecent journey into Poland, and he andDon Poorman gave me th e details ontheir tour into Yugoslavia .

The Thackstons are li vin g in theHospitality House this winter, whilegetting t he ir apa rtment r eady in one ofthe service buildings. They hope tohave this ready for occupancy and bemoved by th e time the Chambers familyarrives in May. The Chambers es w illthen become host and hos t e s s fo r th eHospitali ty House and Dan will overseet he r en ov at io n a nd m a in te na n ce fo r th eEuropean Center fo r Evangelism.

Renovation needed immediatelyThe property needs extensive plumb

ing, heating an d electrical renovation. The only rooms being heated this winterar e those occupied by th e Thackstonsand by guests that ar e visiting. Woodstoves (European style-ceramic tile)are in each room, and requi re a lo t of

attention to keep the house warm. Al lwater used mus t be carr ied more thanhal f a block from a well . Becau s e theentire house is not being heated, thewater had to be t ur ne d o ff this winter .

    Obviously th e T h a c k s t o n s ar ehaving an exciting winter, and enjoying it !

Buildings in excellent repairThe buildings ar e in excellentrepair, however. They have been kept

painted on the outside and kept cleanon the inside. All the bui ld ings a resolid. In th e Hospitality House thewal l s a re so th ick tha t no sound i sheard from one room to th e n ex t. C ert ai nl y t he estimate that i t would takefour hundred thousand dollars to replaceth is fac il ity is not ou t of r eason . Evenas I was there I could visua l ize th emany wayS we were going to use th eproperty in our work.

$330,000 needed forEuropean Center for EvangelismBu t i f we are to have i t an d use it ,we mus t mee t the necessary costs. Topurchase and renovate this property andsecure the necessary equipment to

c ar ry out th e MISSION TO RUSSIA willrequire $330,000 over th e next threey e a r s .1) The cost of th e s ix a c re s, the buildings and furnishings is $110,000. Webelieve this to be a real bargain.

    2) Renovation adds another $110,000.This figure includes f ive complet emissionary apartments, with kitchenand bathroom fixtures; al l plumbing, wiring and heating in the HospitalityHouse; commercial s tove , d ishwasher, r ef rige ra to r and freezer for th e

Hospitality House plus commerciawasher and dryer t ha t w il l s er ve boththe Hospi ta li ty House and the mi ssionary famil ies living at th e European Center fo r Evangel i sm.

    S I N C E TH I S IS A T H R E E Y E A RPROGRAM, WHAT DO WE CONSIDERO U R IMMEDIATE N E E D S ?

    (1) We mus t have $45,000 by April 1to meet our purchase agreement. Thiswill cover th e down payment and closin g costs.(2) We must begin renovation assoon as possible. In our con fe rence

(continued from front page)las t week in Vienna, we recognized thatwe could not go beyond our means, andth e conclus ion we reached w as tha t"we will do nothing in renovation except that which absolut ely has to bedone unt i l funds a re ava i l ab l e . "But certainly plumbing ha s to bedone. Kitchens and ba throoms have tob e in sta lle d. F am ilie s will be livingthere only a few weeks from now. DanChambers will move in May. GeorgesCarillet in June. Dewey Thackston andhis family ar e there now! We must beginon t he r en ov at io n a t once!

Laundry facilities ar e an absolutenecessity, and some work must be donein the Hospi ta li ty House kitchen inanticipation for our summer program.

I would est imate a minimum cos t o fS5,000 to do renovation work during themonths of May and June.(3) The Printing Shop and Recording Studio will wait for at least anotheryear, but necessa ry veh ic les for oursummer vis i t a t ion a re n ee de d now.We must also acquire equipment forth e Work Center such as typewriters, desks and chairs, and f il in g cabinets.A minimum of $10,000 is required forthis by June.

God's people are responding. As of today, January 20, we have

received 812,487.29 in cash contribut ions from Christians who are vitallyconcerned abou t th is work. We have a lsor eceived three -yea r monthly commi tments amounting to $1,064.99. We thankGod for every person who has involvedhimsel f in th is MISSION TO RUSSIA.

and pray that you, if you h ave not already sent your offering and commitmentwill f i ll ou t the commi tment blank onpage four and mail it to us with youroffering.

Plans made for Summer ProgramIn addi t ion to conferences with th eThackstons, we spent much time w ith

Don Poorman and his family and laidex tens ive p lans fo r th e summer activit ies out of th e Eur op ean Cen te r fo rEvangelism. Among o th er t hi ng s, weplanned the program for the Summer Interns, and also made plans for th e 1972WITNESSING TOUR that will be inVienna in June. During their time inV ie nn a t he d ed ic at io n service fo r th eEuropean Center for Evange li sm wil lbe held.

Brief visit into CzeclioslovakiaI also made a weekend trip into

Czechoslovakia, where I preached inPr ague on the Lord's Day and hadlengthy conversations with Christianworkers there . We ar e a lways inspi redand challenged by the faith and consecrat ion of these Chris t ians who livefo r Christ in the midst of atheist iccommun ism.

An extra blessing of th e week wasmeeting Richard Deighton.who is working in the Black Forest area in Germanyas a missionary. He came to th e Hospitality House to visit with me andbrought his family with him. Wehad longconferences a bo ut t he work of Chri s t inEurope and how important it is to findeffective ways to work for Christ acrossthe whole cont inen t .

This outstanding young man hasreal evangelistic zeal and i s determito be used o f th e L ord . He i s devot o Chr is t and shows a r ea l sp ir it ofoperation with o ther Christians. Weticipate many more such t imes withthe missionaries o f Europe as we ht ime to mee t w ith th em and sharefa i th and mot iva t ion .

John K. Huk in Austria and PolandPlans had already been madeJohn K. Huk to spend some time

Europe on a missionary tour. He wasVienna a t th e same t ime I was. We wable to spend several hours conferrwith a Chr is t ian brother from one ofEastern European countries regardth e work of Christ in his country ahow we could ass is t those laborthere fo r th e cause of Christ .

And before I hardly knew it ,plane was on the way back to ToronI had been gone from Tuesday throTuesday and had spent 131 hoursmission work during the eight daBut God gave the guidance and s trenand by His grace we were able tocomplish every single thing we hadmind while we were gone. And, wethe added blessing of meeting BDeighton.

Indeed a long chain of eventsstart when our travel agent called. Gknew I n ee de d t o be in Vienna, andk new w hat co uld be done in the sht ime avai lab le and HE MADE IT APOSSIBLE. God is stil l opening do

Rad io Reaches Russ ia !The Iron Curtain is no t soundproof!

Toronto Christian Mission's broadcastsare heard daily across th e Soviet Union.

Our sources tell us these programsare having great effect. When Gene Dulintraveled in Siberia l a s t summer, hetalked with Christian leaders who spokeof Bro . Huk a nd t he radio minis t ry .

"B/'O. Huk is our minis te r. " theysaid. Brethren told how they gather a-round t he r ad io to l isten and have theirown worship service. In some isolatedvillages John K. Huk is the ONLYCHRISTIAN MINISTER THEY HAVE.

They can hear th e Gospel only because of short-wave radio, and only because of concerned Chris t ians in Canada and t he Uni te d States who provideth e needed financial and prayer support.Letters come telling us how muchthe programs are appreciated. This le tter w as mailed from Poland.

Dear Brother J. K. Huk, Peace beUnto you! I thank you very much foryour program, "Everlast ing Gospel."May the Lord bless your service in1972. Maymany find way to life eternal. If you can , send me some Christianl it erature, for which I wi ll be thankfulto you.

Not a ll l et te rs are from bel ievers .Rep li es s uc h as this letter from th eSoviet Union tell us that a wide spectrum of listeners hears every broadcast.I listened to your program and amvery much puzzled. Whoever asked youto "grind" such rubbish to us? Here inour country, children from the age ofthree already know there is no god. Ias k you no t to forget the fact that wehave a socialistic government. We arePioneers (a communist youth organization). In place of c rosses, we wear redneckerchieves . The people, the partyand communism is our god. Therefore, look for fools in other countr ies whowould listen to you and don 't stir upt rouble in the waters of our knowledge.

    Radio is WinningPeople to Christ

in Russia!A recent s ta tement by certain

Christian leaders in Russia, mentions"upwards of a million people in theU.S.S.R. have come to a saving knowledge of Christ" through radio broadcasts from such powerful short -wavestations as Radio Monte Carlo , and FarEast Broadcasting Company, Manila,P.I. (see March, 1972 Newsletter,Eastern European Mission).

What an incentive this provides usto continue and even to expand TorontoChr is t ian Mis s ion ' s Iron Cu rt ai n Rad ioMinistry of beaming Gospel and Scripture Reading programs daily into Russiaan d o th er communist-dominated lands .As t he Gospe l is proclaimed, men andwomen ar e challenged by the go spel ofJesus Christ and a re turning to Him!

Truly THE IRON CURTAIN IS NOTSOUNDPROOF! Almost daily we receive verif ication of th is fact . Whileit will t ake e te rn ity to reveal the totaleffectiveness of our rad io min is try,st i l l resu l ts are seen now.

You c an h av e a share in t hi s v it alphase of Christian outreach. Your gifts, designated for the Iron Curtain RadioMinistry, will help keep our programson the air and make possible addingnew stations. It al l takes money. Butyour gift th us becomes a "sound investment" in souls. So, we urge you to"Give with cheer, that others mighthear . "
