    Missionary Tour Report

In preparing an art ic le on th e missionary journey completed Dec. 2,1968, I remembered the following letter, written as I was on my way home.It summarizes the tour and expresses my feelings a t that moment Ratherthan prepare an entire ly new art ic le , I share this let ter with you.

    Letter to Paul Bajko:

    Dear Brother Paul,

    December 2, 1968

As I write you, I am 30,000 feet over the Atlant ic onth e home. I hope to ge t t hi s le tt er ^ 'p ed when I ge t toTo ronto so you will be able to read it. My scribbling i sn ' t th ebes t .

I'm sure you would have rejoiced to have witnessed themany blessings God poured out upon us and the brethren inPoland in these last 23 days as I visited there. I preachednear ly ever y n i g h t and ba d wonderful response to everymessage. The hospi ta l ity i l lus tra ted the love of the brethrenmore than I can poss ibly express.

While my lack of ability to speak Polish or Russian isa real handicap, the excellent int^reting done by GeorgeBajenski and Kos tek Jakon iuk enabled me to communicate no tonly from the pulpit, bu t also in many hou rs of private conver-saticn. My previous visits (four weeks in 1963, three weeks in1967, five days in June of this year) added to the present visi tgives me e l ev en week s in Po land ove r t h es e five years of time. This, added to the e i ^ t weeks of v is it at ion by Bro. Huk andthe much correspondence he and I carry out, ha s given mesome knowledge of th e work in Poland and an appreciation oftiie circumstances under which they labor and th e problemst hey face . I'm sure your being Slavic in origin gives you addedability to understand the Polish peopl e e ven as it does Bro.Huk. I am thankful that I have been able to call upon hi sknowledge so frequently in these y ea rs t ha t we hav e don e wha twe could for the people in eastern Europe. 1 am especiallythankful to God that He made available necessary funds anddocuments for me to be able to respond to the invitation of theChristians in Poland to come a t this particular t ime. God wa sworking in Canada to give me an awareness of the need, inPoland to prepare al l things for my arrival and in America toprovide necessary funds. Don't we serve a wonderful God!Seeing Him work these last five weeks ha s thrilled my soul, has inspired me to a greater zeal and has humbled me as Ihave a new awareness t h a t He h a s e n tr u st ed in to human hand sthe expansion of His kingdom.

I'm sure the Committee on Polish Evangelism thatserves as George Bajenski's ccn it ac t in America and Canadawill rejoice, too, at the good work going on in Poland. Throughthis committee and through Toronto Christian Mission severalthousand dollars have gone to Poland as i t ha s been given byChrist ian chu rche s -chu rche s o f Chr i s t an d Christ ian individua ls in th e United S t a t e s an d Canada . We h av e b ee n ab le tofinance the summer camp program of the church of Christ inPoland which each year has amounted to a t least $500. Wehave also shared in the winter camp program. Even yes terdayI left sufficient funds to cover th e cost of the winter campplanned by the church of Christ brethren for December 26

through January 2, 1969. Since Bro. Huk and I ar e on theCommittee for Polish Evangelism, we can give up-to-date andf i rs trhand repo r ts on th e progress of the work in Poland aswell as express some understanding of the difficulties thatthe brethren face. We thank God for all those who help thesedear brethren whether through you or through us. The freedomof the Christians, appreciated so much by all of us in thechurch of Christ , allows each of us to assist as we are guidedby th e Spirit, those we desire. How we thank God there is nocomity arrangement which closes doors God's Spirit opens andthat we have no official headquarters throu^ which we mustwork. From our var ious conversat ions, I know your deepappreciation for the principles of the church of Christ asrevealed in the New Tes tament which have made possible thewonderful freedom we have in Christ, and I know how thankfulyou ar e for th e tremendous p r o g r e s s made in world-wideevangelism under this simple plan in these last few years.

Back to the tour. I become so enthusias ti c and appreciative of Uie posit ion we hold, which is so vei y scriptural, fundamental, and to which we owe recent progress for thechurch of Christ, that I get car ri ed away in writing, even as Ido in preaching, on the great freedom we have in Christ.

The last week in Poland I spent in Warsaw. I delivereda series of lectures at 4 p.m. each evening. The subjects 1used were: "The Word of God," "God ' s Plan of Salvation,""God's Plan for Using Man" (Stewardship), " t a c t i c a l Thingsto be Done for the Glory of God in Poland," and "The Relationship of the Preacher and the Church." Attendance in theselectures wa s from about a dozen to over th ir ty. I feel theselectures were of g re at v al ue . And the brethren respondedexceptionally well to the prac t ica l suggest ions we were ableto make n ea r th e e nd o f th e week.

Each n i ^ t a t 6:00 wa s an evange li s t ic se rv ice a t th ePulawska congregation. As you know, the churches in Polandseldom use an invitation hymn, but we used " Jus t As I Am"as the hymn of decision. During the week, four young people -three boys in their l at e teens or early twenties and one younglady - confessed t hei r f a ith in Chr is t. Bap ti sms a re not "thesame hour of th e night," but a re f r equent ly delayed for sometime, as yo u ar e wel l awa re . H ow ev er, I am happy to reportthat al l four of these young pe op le ar e to be baptized onSaturday evening, December 7. I felt the presence of God in ave ry r ea l sense In this week of evangelism a t t he Pu lawskacongregation. You could feel th e "revival sp i r i t " It wa s agreat meeting for the glory of Christ.

Since the United Church Synod, which is held ever ythree years, was on Saturday, November 30, and Sunday,December 1, I ha d opportunity to talk with many of our b re th renas they arrived in Warsaw for the Synod Meeting. I had alsovisited with many of these Ix^thren the first two weeks as Ipreached outside of Warsaw. I also had a lengthy and, I trust, profitable private conference with &o . Krakiewicz who was

re-elected president of the United Evangelical Church ofPoland at the Synod meeting. I spoke at the Sunday morningservice where the Synod was held, but many delega tes werein business sessions. There was considerable displeasure thata business meeting was scheduled at the same time as theSunday morning worship service. Tliis was not on the originalprogram, but because of lengthy sessions on Saturday, therewas a feeling that added business needed to be conducted onSunday morning. At any rate, no signiflcant changes were madea t this church meeting. Each of the part ic ipating groups in theUnited Evangelical Church are sti l l able to ma int ain their

identity. This, of course, is of vital importance to our bre thren. We pray no further effort will be made to overcome this individual ident ity and the (^por tuni ty our brethren have through thisplan.

On my arrival in Poland, I first traveled to the east andvisited churches near the Russian borde r. Thanksgivingservices were hel d in Bielsk where 1 p re ached twice. 1 spentthe n ight s in Kostek's home and tveached in difTerent villageseach evening. We also had our noon-day or evening meal in thehomes of tiie brethren. Kos tek th en took me t o th e n or th we st t oOlstyn where George met us. I stayed in that area until afterMonday services at the Ostnida Old Folks' Home. I g re et edyour aunt while 1 was there. Tuesday was a day of catchingup and on Wednesday Kostek and Bro. Saciewicz and the elderBajen sk i and 1 went south to visit churches in the Sosnowiec

area and saw where the winter camp is held. We preached indifTerent churches each evening and were at the Sosnowiecchurch on Sunday morning. We then drove to Warsaw vrfiere Ipreached at the Allie j church.

    Clyde George

    Accepts Ontario

    Youth Ministry

Clyde George, Youth Minister of th eDewey, Oklahoma, Christian Church, has recognized th e need for a challenging youth programin Ontar io and has accep ted t he call to move tothis province and give leadership in developing

extensive activit ies for young people to challenge them for Christ.Throughout th e twelve-year history of

Toronto Christian Mission special attention hasbeen given to reaching youth. No t only was andis th e future of th e church dependent on reachingyoung people for Christ, but the present churchwas seen to need desperately th e vitality ofyouth with the enthusiasm and vision which

come from young and ded icated Chri st ians. Asth e work has progressed, a very small youthrally developed into a monthly rally with youngpeopl e a tt endi ng from s ever al chu rche s, eventhough distance has been a great problem. Sincenearly 400 miles separate two of tiie severalpart icipat ing churches, some congregations getto attend infrequently.

A Christian Service Camp program go tunderway in 1961 in rented facilities witharound 20 young people of all ages. As tiiisprogram grew ou t of available rented facilities,50 acres of beautiful, partially wooded, Ontariohill country were purchased as a campsite. Todaywe have five dormitories, an administrationbuilding, a chapel and a large din ing hal l-ki tchenbuilding. All of these are built according tovery strict Ontario laws governing camp construction. While regular camp weeks have beenplanned and held, development of the programis still underway. These camp facilities alsoenabled us to branch out in tw o other areas ofyou^ activity; Q) A camp for wayward ordelinquent and underprivileged boys, and (2) anInternat iona l Week for o lder youth of Canadianand American churches where they find a weekof camp which is really "different" and whichgives a real challenge to young people.

As new c hu rc he s h av e started and olderc hurc hes ha ve be en revi ta li zed , need for devel-opmentof youthleadership training among adultsbecame apparent. With no foundation of "pastexperience" to call upon, interested adults facedfrustration in efforts to assis t in youth work.

Although we have had an awareness oft he n ee ds , none had suff ic ient time to devote toadequate development of any o f th es e areas ofneed while maintaining our other responsibilit i es . In some o f these areas fo r instance, th ematter of th e work with t he d el inquen t boys

    none o f t h e m i s s io n a ri e s o r min i s t e r s in Onta r iohave had adequate experience or training tobegin to mee t t he challenge.

And then Clyde George came on th escene . G ene Du lin held a F ai th P ro mis e Missionary Conference a t Dewey, Oklahoma. Asgospel sermons were preached showing theChristian's responsibi l i ty to go into a ll th eworld, and pictures were shown of th e work inCanada illustrating th e numerous opportunitiesfor work and especially in the minis^ to youth,Clyde said, "You have a vision and I want to

    be a part of that vision!" Jeannie, hi s wife,was in full agreement.A sho r t v i s i t in Toron to a llo we d o th er

missionaries in the area to meet Bro. Georgeand to talk with him about opportunities.Sufficient t ime w as availab le to make somebasic plans and to chart a general course ofaction for this phase of the work of TorontoChr i s t i an Miss ion .

Bro. George will serve as Dean of thecamp week for delinquent and underprivilegedboys to be held August 11-14, 1969. This willallow him to become acquainted with the boysand some of their problems. He will t he n c ar ryou t an extensive follow-up program with theseboy s an d their families, fully expecting to reachnot only tiie boys, but the entire families forChr is t . Th i s i s one o f th e most obvious andchallenging areas of need in metropolitan lifetoday. We have recognized it for y ea rs, evensince before we arrived in Toronto, but untilnow have no t felt we had personnel really tot ack l e t h e t a sk .

    Some of the camp dormitories.

The Internat ional Week h as been ca l led"the greatest camp week in my entire l ife" by

numerous youth who have already attended inthe two years i t has functioned. We have barelybegun to touch on th e opportunities which cancome from such a week. If properly developed, this week can reach two thousand young peopleevery summer. Already we have seen outstandingyouth from Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan,Illinois, New York, Missouri, Georgia, Kansasand Colorado, as well as young people fromOntario challenged to a more dedicated life forChr i s t . Numerous l i fe re cru i t dec i s i ons havebeen made, while others have made init ialdecisions for Christ. Bro. George will haveopportunity to "take this week and run with i t ."TTiis year he will participate in the week ofcamp as on e of th e spe ak ers while observingthe program developed under th e leadership ofthe Interna tiona l Week Committee composed ofGene Dulin, Dewey Thackston and Alan LaRueand b egin ning to plan for even a much moreextensive camp for 1970.

    7/44

Bro. George will also be available, oninvitation, to ass is t local congregations indeveloping youth programs and in training adultsfor youth leadership. He will assist in furthe rdevelopment of t he Ontar io Youth Rally. He willalso write a monthly column in th e CANADIANCHRISTIAN HARBINGER a imed a t adu l t s whowant to do something for youth . Plans call forthe development of a Youth Magazine in theimmed ia t e fu tu r e .

Experience is always a factor in preparing a man for a job. Bro. George comes from theYouth Ministry of th e Dewey, Oklahoma, church. He served as student youth minister at th e NewBurlington congregation near Cincinnati, Ohio,as well as s t uden t mini st r ie s with the Sardis,Ky., ch urch an d th e ch ur ch in Franklin, Ohio.He was graduated from The Cincinnati BibleSeminary in 1967. His home church is the North7th Street church in Hamilton, Ohio, where he

was very active in th e youth program. It wasthere that through th e influence of a youthminister he dedicated his life to t he m in is tr y ofChrist. In high school he wa s active in sportsand excel led in foo tba l l . He tu rned down as izeable a th let ic scholarship from the Universi tyof California at Los Angeles as well as numerous other scholarship offers for th e privilegeof serving as a full-time servant on the Lord'st e a m .

Mrs. George (Jeannie) is the daughterof Professor and Mrs. E. Wayne Berry of TheCincinnati Bible Seminary. She grew up in th e

    Mrs. George with Stephanie

First church in Columbus, Indiana, where herfather w as m inister of music Choirmaster-Organist . She attended The Cincinnati BibleSeminary before her marriage. At p re se nt sh eserves as choir director of the Dewey church. The Georges' daughter, Stephanie Lynn, wasbom May 13 , 1968.

Bro. George will be associated withToronto Christian Mission in every way. He willwork out o f the M iss io n office and will havethe printing facilities of the Mission, as wellas th e Mission staff available to give assistanceas they are able. He has been invited to assumethe position of "Director of Youth Activity" bythe Mission because th e sc op e of his work willb e a re a-w id e a nd becau se o f th e fact tha t in th efield of juvenile delinquency no church in theToronto area is in a p osi ti on, ei ther withleadership or finances, to give direction to thework .

Toronto Christian Mission has alwaysexpend ed eve ry possible effort to respect th eautonomy of th e local congregation. The Missionhas never called a preacher for either a newchurch or an old one. Each congregation callsi ts own minister who is responsible to thatcongregation. In th e case of a new congregation,t he m in is te r may be supported from outside th elocal church and, therefore, the responsibi l i tymay be divided between th e local chu rch and th esupport ing church or churches. This principlehas been followed without exception, a s was

    illustrated when Westway church called WayneAlford and l a t e r L e s She l l when th e chu r c hbecame self-supporting. Likewise, th e Hamiltoncongregation called Alan LaRue, the Niagarachurch called Dewey Tha ckston, th e Ottawachurch called Richard Wright, and the Willowdalechurch ca l led John Clemens all a s minis ter-missionaries, since each congregation neededf inanc ia l a s s i s t a n c e f rom o u t s i d e . None o f t h e se

minister-missionaries has had any financialconnection w ith Tor on to Christian Mis sio n, n orhave any of them had any responsibility to th eMission, nor, further, has th e Mission hadresponsibility to them. (This was true of DeweyThackston, who has since come to be with theMission, as well. The principle involved ha sbeen maintained in every case.) This, we feel, maintains th e principles of direct-support missions and assures the local autonomy of eachcongregation . Coopera tion among th e congregat ions an d minister-missionaries in th e a re a the n
