Topic: Energy Resources

Essential Question: What do the different energy resources have in common? What is

different?

Topic: Energy ResourcesEssential Question: What do the different energy resources have in common? What is different?

• When we use electricity in our home, the electrical power was probably generated by burning coal, by a nuclear reaction, or by a hydroelectric plant at a dam. Therefore, coal, nuclear and hydro are called energy sources.

Topic: Energy ResourcesEssential Question: What do the different energy resources have in common? What is different?

• Energy sources are divided into two groups.– Renewable (an energy source that

can be easily replenished) – Nonrenewable (an energy source

that we are using up and cannot recreate).

• Advantage- A good reason to do or use something.– Example: The advantage of using a

calculator is math is quicker.

• Disadvantage- The reasons why doing something would be bad.– Example: The disadvantage of using

a calculator is you could punch in the number wrong and not know it.

Examples of Renewable Energy

• Solar Energy- Solar energy is the sun’s rays (solar radiation) that reach the Earth.

• Advantages- – does not produce air

pollutants.– Low impact on the

environment.

• Disadvantages-– Sunlight is not the same

all the time.– You need a LOT of solar

panels.

Examples of Renewable Energy• Wind- energy captured

from air in motion. This is captured with the use of a windmill.

• Advantages- •Few impacts on the environment.•Reduces the amount of air pollutants

• Disadvantages-•Some people do not their looks on the land•Kills birds

Examples of Renewable Energy• Hydropower- Produces

the most amount of electricity in the U.S. Energy from moving water.

• Advantages-– Generators do not

pollute the air.– Also helps stop floods

from rivers.• Disadvantages-

– Stops the migration of fish

– Could change water temperature

– Could impact plants and animals next to plant.

Examples of Renewable Energy• Geothermal- Energy

from the heat inside the Earth. Heat is always coming out of the Earth.

• Advantages- – Does not pollute

the air– Earth is always

hot so never going to run out

• Disadvantages-– Have to find a

place to drill (time consuming)

– Wells could stop producing steam

Examples of Renewable Energy• Biomass- The burning of

organic material made from plants and animals . Burning releases heat which is energy.

• Advantages- – Alcohols are basically

clean burning– Can be found

anywhere

• Disadvantages-– Depending on what is

burned, could lead to global warming

– A lot less energy is released than other types of energies.

Examples of Nonrenewable Resources • Fossil Fuels-

– Include Coal, Oil and Natural Gas.

– Formed from the remains of plants and animals over millions of year.

• Advantages-– Creates HUGE amounts of

energy.– Power stations can be

made pretty much anywhere.

• Disadvantages-– Creates a HUGE amount of

pollutants– Contributes to Green

House Gases– Destroys land from mining.

Examples of Nonrenewable Resources • Nuclear- Made

from the splitting of Uranium. Split the atoms to release the energy.

• Advantages-– Does not pollute the air– Creates LARGE amounts of

energy

• Disadvantages-– Creates radioactive waste

which could cause cancer.– Can be very dangerous

Process C-Notes

1. Re-read your notes and HIGHLIGHT important concepts from the notes.

2. Underline vocab terms.3. Circle things you don’t understand.4. Create questions for your notes.5. Come up with a 3-4 sentence summary of

your notes.

Notebook Assignment

1. Glue C-Notes on the next right hand page.2. On the left hand, answer the following

question. Include some sort of picture. Answer needs to be more than 4 sentences.:

If you were able to choose to give your house electricity by a renewable resource or a non

renewable resource which would you choose and why?
