Reviewing YourBrokerage Account
Statements
(NAPSI)—Investors needto carefully review theinformation in their bro-kerage account statementand trade confirmationreport.
That’s the word fromexperts who say investorsshould always keep aclose eye on the state-ments they receive frombrokers and other finan-cial institutions. Thesereports are designed tohelp you stay on top ofyour investments andprovide information thatcan alert you to errors oreven misconduct, such asunauthorized trading.
To help, here are five tipsthat will help you under-stand and make the mostof the information inthese reports.
• Check key account infor-mation. Make sure yourstatements and confirma-tions include a statementperiod or end date, andthat your account number, name and contact infor-mation are correct. Youshould also make sureyour financial profession-al’s firm and contact infor-mation are correct.
• Follow the money. Ifyour confirmations listwhether trades are solicit-ed or not, you shouldcheck this, too; tradesshould be properly catego-rized as “solicited” (thebroker’s idea) or “unso-licited” (requested byyou).
• Scrutinize fees. If there’sa fee you don’t under-stand—such as a handlingor mailing charge or a
markup or commission—ask your broker to explainit. These costs ultimatelyimpact the overall returnon your investment andyou have a right to askabout fees being charged.
• Be alert to fraud. If yourstatement or confirmationlooks unprofessional oraltered in any way, thismay signal fraud. Forinstance, if a logo haspoor resolution, this is ared flag—sometimes, fraudsters cut and pastelogos of legitimate firmsonto their own fake state-ments.
• Take action.Immediately contact thefirm that issued the state-ment or confirmationabout any entry you don’tunderstand or didn’tauthorize. If the problemis not resolved, you canfile a complaint atwww.finra.org/complaint.
“Investors whose portfo-lios have taken a hitmight not be keen to opentheir account statements,”said Gerri Walsh, FINRAInvestor EducationFoundation president.
“But they should reviewtheir statements careful-ly—and immediately callthe firm that issued thestatement about any feethey do not understand ortransaction they did notauthorize.”
