WORKSHOP: MAVRIC / Monaco in SCALE 6.2 Tutorial 08:00-12:00 August 26, 2018 Drury Plaza Hotel Santa Fe, NM, USA For questions, contact: Thomas Miller, ORNL [email protected] Held in association with the 20 th Topical Meeting of the Radiation Protection and Shielding Division http://rpsd2018.ans.org/ This demonstration/tutorial will highlight the automated variance reduction capabilities of the MAVRIC sequence using a few simple example shielding problems. To optimize a given tally, MAVRIC first computes an importance map and biased source distribution based on the results of approximate discrete ordinates calculations using the Denovo discrete ordinates code. The importance map and biased source are then used by the Monte Carlo functional module Monaco to compute that tally much more efficiently than an analog calculation. Registered SCALE 6.2 users are welcome to bring their own laptop and follow along. Example 1: Spent Fuel Storage Installation. In this demonstration problem, MAVRIC used FW- CADIS to compute the photon dose rates at ground level up to 120 meters away in order to determine the dose rate along the site boundary. ORIGEN was used to generate the sources for the spent fuel assemblies in the casks. Example 2: Criticality Accident Alarm System (CAAS) Analysis. SCALE has the ability to take a fission rate distribution computed by the KENO and use it as a source in MAVRIC/Monaco for CAAS applications or other applications with critical sources. The assembly in IEU- COMP-INTER-003 was simulated in the west wing of the Oak Ridge Critical Experiments Facility (Building 9213 of the Y-12 Site) to calculate the total neutron and photon dose from an imagined criticality accident.
