The MESSENGER February 2015 To glorify God, we invite all to grow as faithful disciples and to share in the love, grace and ministry of Jesus Christ by serving the church, community and world. Bruce’s Babblings Brothers and Sisters in Christ: As I reflect on recent happenings within the life of our church, I am reminded of a phrase that is often used in the sports world. That phrase is “next man (or woman) up.” It refers to the fact that sometimes on sports teams because of injuries, because of decisions that young people make, there are times when someone who had been counted on to do something or someone who had been doing something is either unable or unwilling to do it anymore. Two places where that was very obvious are first of all with the Ohio State football team. They lost two starting quarterbacks to injury during the season. Yet with a third-string quarterback they were able to win very handily against the Wisconsin Badgers (Ouch!) for the Big 10 football title and went on to win the national championship in Division 1 college football. A second place where that is occurring is with the University of Wisconsin Badgers men’s bas- ketball team. Starting point guard Traevon Jackson recently suffered a foot injury and will not be able to play again until probably sometime in March. The next man up – Bronson Koenig – stepped into Traevon Jackson’s role and the Badgers are still playing very well. Because we are a church and not a high-profile college sports team, we don’t have nearly the publicity that those organizations do. But, we are nicely using the next man (or woman) up theme here at LMMC. We probably won’t get our names on the front pages of newspapers or web pages but the servanthood that is taking place is as, or arguably, more important than running around on a basketball court or football field. Let me give you some examples: ~ I usually pick up the children from the elementary school for mini-Moravians. For the January meeting I was not able to do this because of a funeral. I asked Steve Brockert to be the next man up and he picked up our mini-Moravians with no snafus. ~ Jackie Frey had been leading our mini-Moravians, but she has accepted a second part-time posi- tion and had to give something up. It was a difficult decision for her to give up mini-Moravians but when it was made known, Heidi Wendorf and Mia Wollin became the next women up and took over mini-Moravians. ~ we had six people who completed terms on the Joint Board this year. Several of them had been on the board for more than one term over the years. We have six new members of the Joint Board, five of them are serving on a board for the first time, as they were next man or woman up. ~ late last year, one of our trustees felt the need to resign from the Board of Trustees. The board got together to suggest someone to take on the remainder of that term. Terry Streich became the next man up as he agreed to serve out the rest of that trustee’s term. ~ we had eight people who felt the need to leave the church during 2014 and turned in letters of resignation from the church rolls. Some of those people were very faithful givers and very hard workers. We also lost 12 people through death during 2014. In spite of those losses of people power and financial giving, none of our regular ministries have folded. We are still looking to replace Ben Lippert’s involvement with youth ministry, but there are plans for events in 2015. The reason none of those ministries have folded is because the next man or woman up has been willing to perhaps work a little harder or contribute a little bit more. I think any organization has to cope with turnover and/or change of personnel. A system that does not have any turnover is probably pretty stagnant. We have had turnover over the past year but the next man or woman up has been faithful in keeping our ministry strong. I will never forget what a mentor of mine said to me several years ago concerning church min- istry. “It is amazing what can get done in churches when people don’t care who gets the credit.” (Thanks, Burke) “Whatever your task, put yourselves into it, as done for the Lord and not for your masters.” (Colossians 3:23) Gratefully serving Christ with you, Pastor Bruce J. Nelson SWMM On Sunday, February 15 at 2:00 p.m., Southern Wisconsin Moravians for Missions (SWMM) will be having a presentation at the Watertown Moravian Church. It will be on the recent mission trip to Cuba by various Moravi- an members. Come join us at 510 Cole Street in Watertown for a time of fellowship. Mid-Week Lenten Plans Even though it seems as though Christ- mas was just a few weeks ago, Pastor Bruce has already been making plans for our mid- week Lenten services. Lent this year begins on Wednesday, February 18. Once again this year we will offer soup and sandwich suppers beginning at 6 p.m., followed by our worship at 6:45 pm. Choir rehearsal will follow our worship services. Our theme this year will be “Beatitudes of Promise.” Each week we will hear about one of the beatitudes. Following are the weekly themes: Feb. 18: The promise of heaven Feb. 25: The promise of comfort Mar. 4: The promise of an inheritance Mar. 11: The promise of righteousness Mar. 18: The promise of mercy Mar. 25: The promise of seeing God The schedule of those who will be hosting the meals is as follows: February 18: Men’s Fellowship February 25: Moravian Women March 4: Senior Choir and Stewardship/ Outreach Committee March 11: Joint Board March 18: Discipleship students & mentors March 25: Moravian Women Thank you to all of the ministry areas in advance for helping with these meals. Please plan to join us as we learn more about the be- atitudes and as we fellowship and eat together. This issue of the Messenger is in Memory of Willis and Charlotte Erlandson Bible 101 Update What happened to Bible 101? Pastor Bruce has been gone two weekends in January doing ministry at Mt. Morris (Joint Board retreat on January 4 and discipleship retreat on January 25), and we had annual church council on January 18. We will have our next installment of Bible 101 on Sunday, February 1 in Fellow- ship Hall immediately following worship. We will also meet on Sunday, February 22. All are welcome to join us as we talk about basics of the Bible. You do not need to have attended previous class sessions to join us in February.
