Epiphany 2017

According to the website, “dictionary.com” the word “epiphany” is defined as follows:

1. a Christian festival, observed on (or near) January 6, commemorating the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles in the persons of the Magi; the Twelfth-day of Christmas.

2. an appearance or manifestation, especially of a deity.

3. a sudden, intuitive perception of or insight into the reality or essential meaning of something, usually initiated by some simple, homely, or commonplace occurrence or experience.

4. a literary work or section of a work presenting, usually symbolically, such a moment of revelation and insight.

For our purposes, definition number 4 doesn’t work at all, number 3 is too vague and general: “the reality or essential meaning of something”. Definition 2 is getting closer, but “an appearance or manifestation, especially of a deity” could also refer to just about anything. The first definition is much more useful.

There is also the term “theophany” which is much more specific. Again according to the dictionary.com website, theophany means, “a manifestation or appearance of God or a god to a person.” (http://www.dictionary.com/browse/theophany?s=t 12302016). In this case we could rightly say that Moses’ encounter with God at the Burning Bush is an instance of theophany.

The Epiphany we celebrate in the Church means more of an unveiling, or a revealing of Christ to the world, and not only to a particular individual. In cases of theophany, God appeared in Person to a particular individual for a specific purpose or mission, such as when He appeared to Abraham or Moses. Epiphany, as we understand it and celebrate it in the Church, means that God has revealed Himself to the entire world through His Son Jesus Christ, who also has a mission, that of reconciling God and humanity.

Of course, the entire world does not see at once, with the Magi, the newborn King. But God intended and succeeded in revealing His Son to the whole world through the Church.

Divine Revelation is for all people at all times. It is meant to be transmitted from one generation to the next, through evangelists, missionaries, and Scripture and Tradition. Divine Revelation is not intended by God to be restricted to one place and time, nor to one nation or culture. God’s intention and plan is that the whole world will come to know, love, follow and be saved by His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, whom He has revealed to the world, and which revelation we celebrate on Epiphany.

St. Therese of Lisieux is the patroness of missionaries although she never left her convent. She died at the age of 24, yet accomplished great things through the power of prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Vinnie's on Broadway NOTES FROM THE HEART

The volunteers at St. Vincent de Paul on Broadway would like to share with you our work that your donations and thrift shop support make possible while keeping confidential the identities of our brothers and sisters in need that we assist.

We sometimes receive written thank you notes from the neighbors that we help. We would like to share some from 2016. We helped about 2100 families and received about a dozen notes. My husband is fully recovered and is back at work. I am now employed full time and doing much better. We are back on our feet and we would not have made it without your help

---Neighbors who WERE in need.

I don't know what the world would do without people like you in it!

----Abandoned new mom

Because of your generous donation, we were able to help a family in desperate need.

----SVdP sister conference

Your gift plays a critical role in helping us to be financially prepared to meet the needs of victims of natural disasters.

----National SVdP Disaster Fund

Please use (this check) for whatever you need in thanks for what you accomplish in the community.

----anonymous

....I have witnessed great acts of charity by our Vincentian Brothers and Sisters....

----a sister conference

It makes my heart very warm and happy to know there are caring people....

----a Hope Ministry recipient

Last Sept, my husband tore his Achilles tendon. SVdP paid our bill, no questions asked. You were there in a very dark time.

---a friend that was in need

Just so we wouldn't get too warm and fuzzy over the outpouring of gratitude, we found this note among the prayer requests "You better paid my water bill or I'll........"

BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door.

Now that we are getting into ordinary time, albeit briefly before the season of Lent and Easter, we will be taking Fr. David's suggestion to focus on the Year of Grace. There will be several titles in the Narthex that will address this beautiful theme. Because God Is Real, Sixteen Questions, One Answer, by Peter Kreeft is one such book.

Kreeft provides the reader with lucid, thoughtful and persuasive answers for believers, unbelivers, and seekers to consider. The author tackles the crucial issues about the deeper meaning of life. This book is ideal for those exploring faith for the first time, as well as for confirmation and religious education classes. From the back cover: "As always, Kreeft is insightful, inspiring, and entertaining... It is an intellectual and spiritual feast! This is vintage Kreeft."

In his introduction, the author writes that this book would be worthless if it doesn't answer three questions about ourselves:

1. Who am I? 2. Where did I come from? 3. Where am I going?

This is a perfect book for parents and grandparents to read with their middle school and high school aged children. It's also a rich and precious resource for those entering the Church this Easter. What a great way to open our hearts and minds to the amazing and wonderful grace of our Lord, and how this grace is manifested through His Holy Catholic Church.
