a, ITEMt Fiold Safoa In Battalion Headquarters,

(1) DISCUSSION: Due t; the ".arge amount of classi- fied material generated in the theater, the battalion headquarters Is not adequately supplied with field safes to property ftore and safeguard thaae documonts. There is currently only one rufe auth- orised fcr the S-2/3-3 suction in an Pillory battalion. This has proved to bo imdoquate for storing classified materl-il.

(2) OBSnVATIQN: One safe should bo authorized for the S-2 section and "tm for the S-3 section. This would provide adequate storaije space nd decreauo the possibility of losing or nLanlscing a document. A requisition has been submitted for an adö-'.tioiul safe *?Ab the above Justification.

b» ITEM: timber of So«rot Koou'nents Pacaed to Battallov Level,

s

* (I) DISCUSSION: An artlUezy battalion S-2 section Is authorised one officer and one NCO. This has proved to be Inadequate In handling the amount of secret doounmts ourrcnt_y being received. During this reporting period, more than half of the SBCRET documonts rouelved did not pertain to this headquarters.

(2; OBSERVATIONS An excessive number of classified doouments ore being received by this unit which do not pertain to tbs unit's activities.

3* (U) Training and Organization»

None.

Um (C) Operations:

a, ITEMi N520 Fuze:

(1) DISCUSSIO!!: The M^ZO tu» fuze has been very unreliable. When firing charge 3, as maiy as $0$ of the rounds were detonated or impact ra^w than at the preset time. Many of the fusses Issued were KSOOAl restamped M5>20, The suspected cause for the un- reliability of the fuze is exposure to the elements for even a ndn- inun length of tins. A tJER was submitted through 23d Artillery Group on or «bout 1 March 1967,

(2) QBSERVATIONt lbs M520 fuze, which are rMforiced from the M500A1, Is found to be unreliable after a short period of exposure to the elements.

b. IWlt Firing Pitt

(1) OZSCa&IONt To faciliUte and speed up the 6ii00 «dl traverse capability for the 155™ towed howitser In a seml-penwneat site, this unit designed and constructed octagon-shaped trail pits. By using 12" x 12" beams thirteen feot In length, positioned In the trail pit and reinforced by ht steel cable ind further supported by packed soil and conoroce abutments, the howitaer trails could be Mtifted 61(00 mils with minimum displaoonent and in less than 60 seconds. Prior to th^ use of this method, trails were often dug three to four feet inoo the soil with aiming post displacements In oxoess of hO mils.

(?) ODSKRVATIONi The octagonal trail pits allow l55nin towed hor-ltaers to shift trails 6aC0 mils with minimum dis- placomtmt and in less than 60 seconds.

o. ITEM: DESTRUCTION MISSIOKSi

(1) DISCUSSION: When firing destruction missions, it has buen found that by using two guns, converged shoof, quicker and more effective rusuits are obtained. Once fire-for-effoct has com-

menced, the half-fork method of adjustment is usod, rather than the full-fork method because experience has shown that the adjustments by the observers are within 50 muters of the target, (Air observers horre been used almost oxoluslvoly.) At ranges of 13,000 maters or gruather, experience has also shown that tho trlAl brackets can be continually split using elevation changes in tenths of mils, rather than using tho normal procedure of computing one half-one third, ard one fourth the elevation change for the adjusted quadrant elexation. Using two guns increases the probability of achieving target hi-S.

(2) 0BSEEVATI0N: Faster and better results can be obtained in destruction missions using two guns, converged sheaf with the half-fork method of adjustment.

d. ITEM» Fire Concisnds:

(1) DISCUSSION: FM 6-1*0 recoimends that Fire Connands bo tranonitted from FDC to tho recorder at the X0 Post, then rotrans- aittod to the guns. This is subject to errors in transmission and is time consuming. This unit therefore, transmits tho command directly

from FDC to the guns.

(2) OBSERVATION: Fire Jommands transmitted to the re- corder and then retransmitted to the guns only adds to the possibility of eiror and is tine consuming.

e. ITEM: lASm-Aropellantst >

(1) DISCUSSION: Some of the propelling charges issued for 155mm howiteors are marked "For Emergency Combat Use Only." This propellant has proved to be unreliable and creates a safety hazard when firing close-support missions. A separate command letter was for- warded on this subject. This unit currently usos this type propellant for HScI fires only.

(2) OBSERVATION: Bropellants marked "For Emergency Contet Us« Only* are unreliable for close support missions.

a« ITSMi Obturator Plugs t

(1) DISCUSSION: ^hls unit has continued to oxpurianoe difficultlea in obtaining Obturator Plugs, Spindle (PSII 1J025-73O-$)11) . RaqiilsLtions for this itam, submittod on an C-2 priority have been r©» eoived on the averagu of ninety dnys later. From 1 February 196? to 18 April 1967« this unit did not have one Obturator Plug in its PLL. As a result, when a i>lttg booaiM defective, it resulted in the gun being inoporativö until the part could be roplacod. During this re- porting period, the battalion has forwarded three Command Letters, tw Goaaand Messages, and two UEP.'s on this fubject. In addition, the Battalion Main4: onance Officer has spent approximately fifty percent of his tin», itbenpting to locate thecio critical parts.

(2) OBSERVATION: A minimum of three Obturator Plugs must be on hand in each battery PLL to insure continuous operations of all weapons.

b. ITEM: Lack of TA 50-901 Items:

(1) DISCUSSION: A serious problem exists in the pro- curement of TA 50-?01 itcrr. of organizational equipmentj i.e., rifle, M-l'ij Armor Voat, -oiy; Liner, Hslmet. During ono ton day period In earZy March lp67, this unit had fifteen replacement personnel for whom critical TA 50-901 could not be obtained. This included bolnets and armor rosta« The S-k of this unit visited every major supply depot in II PF7 area in er cttampt to procure these items. A oomand letter was forwarded on 3 March pertaining to this subject. In order to pro* vide helmets and amor vests to replacement personnel, officers wore dirootod to transfer their oun personal T.4 50-901.

(2) OBS&IVATIQN: Aa a minimum, each individual replace- ment should have a rifle, armor vest and. steel helmet when transferred from replacement depots, I
