Come to our OPEN DAYSunday 16th October

A man was stopped by a game war-den in Northern Minnesota recentlywith two buckets of fish leaving alake well known for its fishing. Thegame warden asked the man, "Do youhave a license to catch those fish?"The man replied to the game warden,"No, sir. These are my pet fish.""Pet fish?!" the warden replied."Yes, sir. Every night I take these fishdown to the lake and let them swimaround for a while. I whistle and theyjump back into their buckets, and Itake em home.""That's a bunch of hooey! Fish can'tdo that!"The man looked at the game wardenfor a moment, and then said, "Here,I'll show you. It really works.""O.K. I've GOT to see this!" the gamewarden replied. The man poured the fish in to the wa-ter and stood and waited. After sever-al minutes, the game warden turned tothe man and said, "Well?""Well, what?" the man asked."When are you going to call themback?" the game warden prompted."Call who back?" the man asked."The FISH.""What fish?" the man asked.

"Hey, Mom," asked Johnny "Can yougive me twenty quid?""Certainly not.""If you do," he went on, "I'll tell youwhat dad said to the maid when youwere at the beauty shop."His mother's ears perked up and, grabbing her purse, she handed overthe money. "Well? What did he say?""He said, 'Hey, Marie, make sure youwash my socks tomorrow.' "

The teacher was giving her class ofseven-year-olds a natural history les-son."Worker ants," she told them, "cancarry pieces of food five times theirown weight. What do you concludefrom that?"One child was ready with an answer:"They don't have a union."

A young woman was taking an after-noon nap. After she woke up, she toldher husband, "I just dreamed that yougave me a pearl necklace for Valen-tine's Day. What do you think itmeans?""You'll know tonight," he said.

That evening, the man came homewith a small package and gave it tohis wife. Delighted, she opened it--only to find a book entitled "TheMeaning of Dreams."

A man and his wife are sitting in theliving room and he says to her, "Justso you know, I never want to live in avegetative state dependent on somemachine. If that ever happens, justpull the plug.""OK," says his wife as she gets upand unplugs the TV.

In answer to the question "What'swrong?"

The wife says: The same old thing. The wife means: Nothing.

The wife says: Nothing. The wife means: Everything.

The wife says: Nothing, really. The wife means: It's just that you'rean idiot.

The wife says: I don't want to talkabout it.The wife means: I'm still building upsteam.A woman walked into the kitchen tofind her husband stalking around witha fly swatter."What are you doing?" She asked."Hunting Flies" He responded.

"Oh. Killing any?" She asked."Yep, 3 males, 2 Females," he re-plied.Intrigued, she asked. "How can youtell them apart?"He responded, "3 were on a beer can,2 were on the phone."

A police recruit was asked on an ex-am, "What would you do if you hadto arrest your own mother?"In the blank, he wrote, "Call for back-up."

What are the three questions mostcommonly asked by lawyers?1. How much money do you have?2. Where can you get more?3. Do you have anything you cansell?

Jack has died. His lawyer is standingbefore the family and reads out Jack'sLast Will and Testament:"To my dear wife Esther, I leave thehouse, 50 acres of land, and 1 millioneuros."To my son Barry, I leave my BigLexus and the Jaguar."To my daughter Suzy, I leave myyacht and €250,000."And to my brother-in-law Jeff, whoalways insisted that health is betterthan wealth, I leave my treadmill."

"The idea that no one is perfect is a view most commonly held bypeople with no grandchildren." Doug Larson

They say charity begins at home andIreland’s newest autism charity, Au-tism Assistance Dogs Ireland (AADI)is a testament to that old adage. Thecharity is delighted to be the benefi-ciaries of the Clonmel 10km MiniMarathon on Sunday October 9th.The event will start and end at thePark Hotel, Clonmel with the racegetting underway at 2pm.

AADI has been in existence sinceApril 2010 and to date has placed 3trained assistance dogs and 6 com-panion dogs with children and theirfamilies who are dealing with autismnationwide. The dogs can provideindependence and safety for the chil-dren, allowing them to go out in pub-lic, act as an unconditional source oflove and affection for the child andhelp them to improve interaction andsocialisation skills.

Director of fundraising BreedaClancy says any additional fundingwill be a massive boost. “We dependhugely on all fundraising undertakenby those who partake in events such

as the ClonmelMini-Marathonon behalf ofAADI, flagdays, our onlinestore, calendarsales and otheractivities but the cost of training adog to such specific standards isenormous.

Nuala Geraghty, AADI’s trainingservice manager agrees. “AADI isonly up and running for just over ayear and we are doing our best totrain and provide as many dogs as wecan but to train dogs to the properstandard is a lengthy process and de-mand is very high. AADI has so farmade a huge difference to the lives ofmany autistic children. “We traindogs, mainly Labradors or Goldenretrievers, as assistance dogs to helpautistic children break down the bar-riers preventing them from interact-ing with society”, says Nuala. “Thereis really nothing like seeing the calm-ing effect the dog can have on achild’s behaviour”.

The Clonmel event is being organ-ised by Teresa Burke who can becontacted on 087 6199 881 for spon-sorship packs and further informationor you can join AADI on Facebookor follow them on Twitter@autismdogsirl

Clonmel Mini Marathon

Start with a cage containing fiveapes. In the cage, hang a banana on astring and put stairs under it. Beforelong, an ape will go to the stairs andstart to climb towards the Banana. Assoon as he touches the stairs, sprayall of the apes with cold water. Aftera while, another ape makes an at-tempt with the same result - all theapes are sprayed with cold water.

Continue until, when another apetries to climb the stairs, the otherapes try to prevent it.

Now, turn off the cold water.

Now, remove one ape from the cageand replace it with a new one. Thenew ape sees the banana and wants toclimb the stairs. To his horror, all ofthe other apes attack him. After an-other attempt and attack, he knowsthat if he tries to climb the stairs, hewill be assaulted.

Next, remove another of the originalfive apes and replace it with a newone. The newcomer goes to the stairsand is attacked. The previous new-comer takes part in the punishmentwith enthusiasm.

Again, replace a third original apewith a new one. The new one makesit to the stairs and is attacked as well. Two of the four apes that beat himhave no idea why they were not per-mitted to climb the stairs, or whythey are participating in the beatingof the newest ape.

After replacing the fourth and fifthoriginal apes, all the apes which havebeen sprayed with cold water havebeen replaced. Nevertheless, no apeever again approaches the stairs. Why not?"Because that's the way it's alwaysbeen around here."

Lack of access to overdraft facilitiesor bank loans is still an issue for thesmall business community locally andcontinues to have a serious effect ontrading and business operations. That’s according to the TipperaryNorth County Enterprise Board fig-ures in the bi-annual Business andBanking Confidence survey, whichfound that over a third of small busi-nesses nationwide felt that the availa-bility of credit has deteriorated sinceJanuary 2011, representing 37% of allthose surveyed.  These findings fol-low very similar figures from the Jan-uary 2011 and July 2010 surveys, which also found that over a third ofbusinesses felt that access to credithad worsened during the previous sixmonths.

Worryingly, a greater number of re-spondents also felt that their businesswas being curtailed by bank restric-tions this year, when compared to lastyear.  In July 2010 for example, 44%of small businesses felt that their busi-ness was being curtailed by bankingrestrictions, compared with 48% inJuly 2011.  In addition, 45% of thosewho took part in the survey considerthe effect of current banking situationon trading and business operations to

be “serious.”

The survey, which is being publishedon-line this week by the TipperaryNorth County Enterprise Board, in-cludes the views of over 1,700 soletraders and small business ownersthroughout the Country, includingthose from Tipperary.  Commentingon the survey findings, Ms. RitaGuinan, C.E.O of Tipperary NorthCounty Enterprise Board said: “Whatthis survey shows is that lack of ac-cess to credit is hurting many smallbusinesses here and all over the coun-try. According to our findings, smallbusiness owners and managers feelthat their businesses are being cur-tailed as a direct result of banking re-strictions. Without access to cash flowand credit, many viable businesses aregoing to lose sales, customers andjobs”

The C.E.O added: “The TipperaryNorth County Enterprise Board, alongwith all other Enterprise Boards, hasan important role to play in advisingand supporting small businesses, in-cluding in the areas of access to capi-tal and credit facilities.”As in previous surveys, there was ahigh level of demand reported for a

small business loan scheme concept, proposed by the County and City En-terprise Boards.  Nearly 7 of out 10respondents (69%) felt that such ascheme, to provide loans of up to€20,000 to support working capitalneeds, would be both “helpful anddesirable.”

It has also emerged that small busi-nesses are waiting longer to get paidfor their goods and services. In thissurvey, 64% of respondents had expe-rienced an increased level of debtordays, compared with 60% of respond-ents at the start of the year.Commenting on this finding, RitaGuinan said: "At a time of significantcash flow difficulties, this increase indebtor days is a worrying trend.  Whatit tells us, is that small business own-ers are waiting longer to get paid fortheir goods or services and this couldcause cash flow problems for thewhole small business community."

The survey also found that nearly athird of small businesses expect turno-ver to be better over the next six

months, when compared with the Jan-uary to June period this year (32.5% of respondents).Meanwhile, the number of businessowners who feel that the current busi-ness environment was either poor orvery poor, is down from January 2011(53% felt that the overall business en-vironment was either ‘poor’ or ‘verypoor’ in January 2011, compared witha figure of 48% in July 2011.)

The Business and Banking Confi-dence Survey was carried out in Julythis year by the County and City En-terprise Boards around the country, which are the Government Agencywith responsibility for promoting En-terprise by way of training, mentoringand grant assistance.

The survey was administered andcompiled by the County EnterpriseBoard Central Co-Ordination Unit ofEnterprise Ireland and the full set offindings is available to download atwww.enterpriseboards.ie   or atwww.tnceb.ie.

"I'll never purge my contempt, and Iwant the ESB stopped. I most certain-ly do!" - message from TeresaTreacy, 65 years old, in MountjoyWomens' Prison.

It is the ESB's intent to fell treescovering a total 12 acres of land andamounting to 12,000 trees in all, many of which are native species andwere hand planted and maintained byTeresa over the years. The end resultbeing a 50m wide corridor perma-nently severing her woodlands in twofor well over one kilometer. It is theintention of the ESB to fill the fellingzone with one 20 metre high metaltower, five double wooden poles, a110Kv single transmission line, andfive continuous wires.

Teresa has been attempting to negoti-ate with the ESB since 2006. She has

reluctantly offered a compromise ofsiting the line underground to noavail. Having spent her entire life as alaw-abiding citizen, she has taken thepath of peaceful direct resistance as acourse of last resort.

In a call from the prison, Teresa hasasked for supporters to become ac-tively involved in her struggle to pro-tect her land and trees. Teresa iscommitted and remains defiant. Shehas no intention of 'purging her con-tempt'.

A total sell out in Dublin, The Source FilmClub returns (at last!) on Wednesday, Octo-ber 5th, with Of Gods and Men, a film whichhas received high praise from critics and theGrand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festi-val.

The film concerns a group of eight monkswho inhabit a Cistercian monastery in a re-mote part of Algeria. For decades the broth-ers have lived symbiotically with the localMuslim community, providing free medicaltreatment, clothing and advice. In turn, theyhave been invited to join the villagers reli-gious celebrations. Tales of terrorist activityin nearby towns are regarded with dismay byboth communities. Of course all the whilethe viewer begins to realise that it is only amatter of time before the violence reachesthe door of the monastery.

For Philip French in The Observer "Of Godsand Men is a profound, immaculately acted

movie. Its words are carefully considered, itsimages eloquent. The subject matter is ur-gently topical, the themes raised eternal anduniversal". Peter Bradshaw, writing in TheGuardian gave it five out of five starsand called it a "stunningly passionate anddeeply moving film by the French directorXavier Beauvois, based on the kidnappingand murder of monks in Algeria by funda-mentalists in 1996". In Sight and Sound,Catherine Wheatley wrote that "Watching OfGods and Men, one can't help but be over-whelmed by it's raw humanism"and described the film as "a small miracle ofa film, offering a genuinely progressive vi-sion of faith".

The film will start at 8 pm, and rememberthe film club is open to all, you don't have tobe a member, but there are advantages tomembership. For more details please phonethe box office at 0504 90204.

Hit Film being screened in Thurles!

When a child feels abandoned becausetheir emotional (and physical) needs arenot met, this can breed a feeling of notbeing good enough. It also breeds a rootof core shame which enters the very be-ing of the child and entwines the verysoul of the unfortunate victim. If notdealt with it can last for a lifetime. Thereis a link between depression, humiliationand shame. Paul Gilbert, who writeswell on shame, argues that one’s vulner-ability to depression arises from shame,or a build-up of defeats that activatestrong feelings of inferiority. Hence, theconnection between type A personalityand depression. At another level, thechild psychologist, Maggie Mamen sug-gests that there may be a connectionbetween the spoilt child syndrome anddepression.

Apart from how children attach to theirmain caregivers, there is also much evi-dence that how a child learns to thinkwhen being socialised is also connectedto the presence or absence of depressionin later life. For example, sometimesparents use the reward and punishmentapproach to the child’s formation, and sosome children see this as a way of inter-acting. Small children learn through ob-servation. I often draw the imagery of achild being like a sponge taking in every-thing he sees. The child can learn how tothink negatively, and sometimes theylearn negative views of the self and theworld from the parent’s attitudes. Thismay affect the child’s self-esteem and hisability to relate appropriately with others.

I have a small exercise where I ask aperson being counselled to draw a big earand write into it negative messages aboutthemselves that they heard as children.Ultimately the original negative voice isforgotten and that voice becomes theperson’s own voice. So the message ‘youare a stupid girl’ eventually becomes ‘Iam a stupid girl’. In other words thenegative messages become internalised.Another way of looking at it is that suchpeople have an inner critical voice, andnever feel good enough. Those counsel-lors who use the inner child way of work-ing refer to this as the critical innerparent.

It is really important to be aware of thesymptoms of depression in a young per-son. Teachers should certainly be alert inthis regard. School is a very busy place. The daily grind is relentless, especially insecond level schools who try to provideas holistic an education as possible. But,the spectre of third level college andentry qualifications is always present. Soit is important for teachers not only to bealert to the symptoms of depression inchildren and adolescents, but also to real-ise that some of these symptoms are quite

different to those experienced by adults.Of course, some of these symptoms maystem from other problems, so parents andteachers need to get as much informationas possible about the child or adolescentshowing such symptoms.

Obviously parents should also be educat-ed in the signs of depression afflictingchildren. Parents are in the best positionto see if their child suffers from frequentvague, non-specific physical complaintssuch as headaches, muscle aches, stom-ach aches, and tiredness. All of thesemay indicate a depressed child. If a childhas frequent absences from school or isperforming poorly, these, too, may bewarning signs of the presence of depres-sion. Children who are depressed some-times often talk about running away fromschool, and some may even do so. This,of course, may be for other reasons, suchas bullying. Of course if the home envi-ronment is abusive or negative, this maybring on depression, and a resulting de-sire to get away.

Parents should also pay attention if theirchild is frequently irritable, angry andhostile. Irritable moods are often exhibit-ed by depressed children, and less so inadults. Crankiness can be part of depres-sion, but this depression may not be rec-ognised by hard-pressed parents. Inlooking at depressed children irritabilitymight be substituted for depressed mood, because, unlike adults, children may notpresent with depressive mood dependingupon their developmental stage. Pre-school children and pre-adolescents lookdepressed in facial expression, whereasin adolescents depressed mood is morecommonly seen.

A man came home from work lateagain, tired and irritated, to find his5-year-old son waiting for him at thedoor.“Daddy, may I ask you a question?”“Yeah, sure, what is it?” replied theman...“Daddy, how much money do youmake an hour?“That’s none of your business! Whatmakes you ask such a thing?” theman said angrily.“I just want to know. Please tell me,how much do you make an hour?”pleaded the little boy.“If you must know, I make €20.00 anhour.”“Oh,” the little boy replied, headbowed. Looking up, he said, “Daddy, may I borrow €10.00 please?”The father was furious. “If the onlyreason you wanted to know howmuch money I make is just so youcan borrow some to buy a silly toy orsome other nonsense, then youmarch yourself straight to your roomand go to bed. I work long, hardhours everyday and don’t have timefor such childish games.”The little boy quietly went to hisroom and shut the door. The man satdown and started to get even madderabout the little boy’s questioning. How dare he ask such questions onlyto get some money?

After an hour or so, the man hadcalmed down, and started to think hemay have been a little hard on hisson. Maybe there was something hereally needed to buy with that€10.00, and he really didn’t ask formoney very often. The man went tothe door of the little boy’s room andopened the door.“Are you asleep son?” he asked.“No daddy, I’m awake,” replied theboy.“I’ve been thinking, maybe I was toohard on you earlier,” said the man.“It’s been a long day and I took myaggravation out on you. Here’s that€10.00 you asked for.”The little boy sat straight up, beam-ing. “Oh, thank you daddy!” heyelled. Then, reaching under his pil-low, he pulled out some more crum-pled up bills. The man, seeing that the boy alreadyhad money, started to get angryagain. The little boy slowly countedout his money, then looked up at theman.“Why did you want more money ifyou already had some?” the fathergrumbled.“Because I didn’t have enough, butnow I do,” the little boy replied.~~~~“Daddy, I have €20.00 now.Can I buy an hour of yourtime?”~~~~
