THE BOOK OFGARDENINGPROJECTS FOR KIDS101 WAYS TO GET KIDS OUTSIDE,DIRTY, AND HAVING FUN
Whitney Cohen andof
Many gardeners nd that once they have children,
gardening goes the way of late-night dinner parties
and Sunday morning sleep-ins. Raising kids and
maintaining a garden can be a juggling act, leaving
the family garden forgotten and neglected. But kids
can make great gardening companions, and the
benets of including them are impossible to ignore.
Gardening gets kids outdoors and away from televi-
sion and video games, increases their connection to
plants and animals, and helps build enthusiasm for
fresh fruits and vegetables. Their involvement be-comes the real harvest of a family garden.
In The Book of Gardening Projects for Kids, Whit-
ney Cohen and John Fisher draw on years of experi-
ence in the Life Lab Garden Classroom and garden-
ing with their own children to teach parents how to
integrate the garden into their family life, no matter

BASINS ON SLOPES
Follow these directions to create a network of
small, V-shaped basins along a hillside that slopes
from 16 to 40 percent. The size of the basins
depends on the slope. On 16 percent slopes,
basins can be up to 6 feet (1.8 m) or more on a
side and 18 inches (45 cm) deep. On 40 percent
slopes, the basins should be no more than 2 feet
(60 cm) on a side and 8 inches (20 cm) deep.
1. Stand on the downhill
side o a tree or shrub
(or a place you will plant
one). With a pickaxe or
stick, draw a V uphill
rom the tree, so that
the tree is in the point o
the V.
2. Walk to the top o one o
lines you just drew. Draw
another V uphill rom
this point. Repeat or the
other arm. The pattern o
lines should start to look
like a fshnet. Continue
until the pattern covers
the slope.
3. Dig basins in between
each set o lines. Stand
at the point o a V. Witha mattock or McLeod (a
frefghting tool), loosen
soil and pull it toward
the line. Make the berm

THE ENCYCLOPEDIAOF CULTIVATEDPALMSSECOND EDITION
Robert Lee Rife, Paul Craft, and Scott Zona
The Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms is the denitive
account of all palms that can be grown for ornamen-
tal and economic use. Palms are often underutilized
as a result of their unfami liarityeven to tropical
gardeners. To help introduce these valuable plants
to a new audience, the authors have exhaustively
documented every genus in the palm family.
825 species are described in detail, including
cold hardiness, water needs, height, and any special
requirements. Generously illustrated with more
than 900 photos, The Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palmsis as valuable as an identication guide as it is a
practical handbook. Interesting snippets of history,
ethnobotany, and biology inform the text and make
this a lively catalog of these remarkable plants.
ROBERT LEE RIFFLE (19402006) was an internationallyrecognized authority on palms and tropical plants. His legacy continues throughhis award-winning books, The Tropical Look, An Encyclopedia of Cultivated Palms,
and Timber Press Pocket Guide to Palms.
PAUL CRAFT is a horticultural consultant and a past president of theInternational Palm Society (IPS). The author of three books on growing palms,he lives in Loxahatchee, Florida.
SCOTT ZONA is the curator of the Wertheim Conservatory at FloridaInternational University, Miami, and the author of nearly 100 articles on palms, both popular and technical. Zona is also the co-editor ofPalms, the quarterlyjournal of the International Palm Society.
