Our mission is to share the wonders of the natural world by publishing books from experts in the fields of gardening, horticulture, and natural history.
|
It may seem as though the natural world is in
danger of being lost, but our authors belie that
notion in the many ways they celebrate that
which remains.
In The Natural World of Winnie-the-Pooh,
Kathryn Aalto discovers the real landscapes
that inspired A. A. Milne to create the
Hundred Acre Wood and the merry band of
friends who lived and played there. In Seeing
Seeds, the award-winning photographer
Robert Llewellyn shares the miracle of nature
in the smallest of packages. In Planting in a
Post-Wild World, Thomas Rainer and Claudia
West teach gardeners how to emulate wild
spaces by creating dynamic landscapes that
will stand the test of time. And in The Art of
Gardening, the gardeners of Chanticleer find
inspiration all around them and show home
gardeners how to bring those wonders into
their own backyards.
We’re proud to publish books that help people
discover the wonders of the natural world, and
we are committed to doing our part to ensure
its survival for generations to come.

The tales of Winnie-the-Pooh, Christopher Robin, and their merry bunch of friends playing at Poohsticks Bridge and the Floody Place are classic and beloved children’s literature. Read by millions of people and made into movies, toys, and countless other iterations, they are an iconic symbol of childhood.
In The Natural World of Winnie-the-Pooh, garden historian Kathryn Aalto reveals the real landscapes that inspired these imaginary tales. This charming narrative first details the collaboration between A. A. Milne and illustrator E. H. Shepard, revealing the interplay between artist and writer. It then explores the specific places in England’s Ashdown Forest that inspired the Hundred Acre Wood, the magical realm in which Pooh, Piglet, and Eeyore live and play. The last section details the flora and fauna of Ashdown Forest and acts as an armchair visitor’s guide to this enchanting place.
Packed with Shepard’s original illustrations and hundreds of new and historical photographs, The Natural World of Winnie-the-Pooh is a must read for everyone who cherishes A. A. Milne’s classic tales.

Exploring the Hundred Acre Wood
ORIGINS of the
STORIES
Origins Of the stOries 93
explOring the hundred Acre WOOd92
The Trap for HeffalumpsAt Cotchford Farm, the old walnut tree provided enough room for the real Christopher Robin and his stuffed bear, but when his Lon-don friend Anne came to visit the country, the hollow felt crowded. Anne could visit, of course. She could come for tea. But living there? Utterly impossible, recalled Christopher Robin in his autobiog-raphy. Children of this age do not easily give up their space, even to best friends. Fortunately there was another piece of real estate close by—the well house, a shelter which covered over a new well dug to supply the Taskers’ cottage. The underground well was enclosed and a wooden shed covered it. Playing neighbors, Christo-pher Robin and Anne “visited” each other by walking along a path he had made.
The little stone path had been inspired by a garden project that was underway at the time. A man named Mr. Farmer had been hired to build crazy paving through their rock garden. Christopher Robin loved to watch him set down the sand base, arrange stones in pat-terns on top, and brush and water sand into the spaces between them. He wanted to do it, too. Mr. Farmer let him choose smaller stones, which Christopher Robin then carried one by one to his own “home” and garden under the walnut tree. There he laid his own path from the tree to the pump shed where Anne “lived.” Tasker then created a wooden sundial for him. But in the child’s mind, there was a problem: having an eye-catching object like a sundial was now a concern. He was afraid trespassers with malicious intent
“In Which Piglet Meets a Heffalump” (Winnie-the-Pooh)
Origins Of the stOries 97
explOring the hundred Acre WOOd96
Little Piglet wants to face down his fears. He marches to the Heffalump Trap. He creeps to the side and peers in. But, in Pooh’s effort to lick every last bit of honey, he has gotten his head stuck in the jar. At the moment Piglet looks down, Pooh is making loud roar-ing noises, stumbling, and bumping his head on tree roots. Horri-fied, Piglet cries and scampers to Christopher Robin, who discovers the Heffalump in the Cunning Trap is actually Pooh, whose head has just hit a root and smashed the jar.
Like all stories in the Hundred Acre Wood, this one was inspired by real places and people, fears and joys, and stirred by a father’s writerly imagination. Christopher Robin did dig a Heffa-lump trap near the walnut tree at Cotchford Farm. In the story “Pig-let Meets a Heffalump,” the trap is situated near the Six Pine Trees. Those six pines could have been anywhere in Ashdown Forest, and the Heffalump Trap is a touching, silly story of pluck and bravery—perhaps a father’s gentle way of encouraging his son to face his own fears.

“ Everyone who loves Pooh and Piglet and Christopher Robin will cherish this behind-the-scenes exploration of A. A. Milne’s world.”

Landscape architects have been trained to see the possibilities of a specific site, but the best landscape architects are also artists who use their skills and imaginations to create something new. And like all artists, they must begin with a creative spark.
The Inspired Landscape explores and illustrates the sources of inspiration that 21 outstanding landscape architects used in their most successful projects. Like the work of Sheila Brady, who used a wood sculpture as inspiration for the abstract shape of a large pond in the New York Botanical Garden’s Native Plant Garden. And Cornelia Oberlander, who found the vision for the form of a Vancouver green roof in a photograph of a gently undulating orchid leaf.
Lushly illustrated with original sketches, plans, and photographs and packed with international examples, this is a must have for professionals, students, and anyone interested in the story behind a work of art.

The Living Landscape is the first collaboration between two of the most original and far-sighted thinkers in the realms of science, nature, landscape, and design. Rick Darke has won an international reputation both for his photography and for his subtle and penetrating writings on the many ways that humans interact with the landscape. Doug Tallamy changed the conversation about gardening with the publication of his landmark book, Bringing Nature Home, and continues to write and lecture on the vital role that native plants play in sustaining healthy ecosystems.

Since the publication of Doug Tallamy’s Bringing Nature Home and Rick Darke’s The American Woodland Garden, many of us have come to realize the importance of native plants in sustaining wildlife and are adding more natives to our gardens. Yet it can be a challenge to make a garden that is friendly both to wildlife and to its human creators. Can a garden truly accomplish all this?
As The Living Landscape shows, you can indeed have it all: a beautiful garden that nurtures wildlife; provides spaces for play, meals, and entertaining; offers shelter and food; incorporates well-behaved nonnative plants; and deepens your appreciation of the amazing interconnections between plants, animals, insects, birds, and humans.
So, how do you do this? By adding or enriching the various “layers” that exist in healthy, functioning ecosystems: ground-covers, perennials, shrubs, understory trees, and canopy trees. The authors explain the importance of each layer and show how it works in the garden. The many exam-ples they provide will inspire you to create a home landscape that is diverse, visually satisfying, and sustaining on many levels.
Richly illustrated with superb photographs and informed by both a keen eye for design and an understanding of how healthy ecol-ogies work, The Living Landscape will enable you to create a garden that is full of life and that fulfills both human needs and the needs of wildlife communities.

We have driven nature out of our cities, but we can invite it back in by designing landscapes that look and function more like they do in the wild. The solution lies in understanding plantings as communities of compatible species that cover the ground in interlocking layers.
Planting in a Post-Wild World is an optimistic call to action dedicated to the idea of a new nature—a hybrid of both the wild and the cultivated that can flourish in cities and suburbs. The authors carefully and thoroughly propose a style of planting that shows how to incorporate native and nonnative species. Readers will learn the principles of designed plant communities, how to find inspiration in the wild, and how to create and manage a plant community.
This timely and essential reference is lushly illustrated with original planting plans and color photography. It will be required reading for garden and landscape designers, as well as knowledgeable gardeners.

Self-seeding plants are a key part of naturalistic gardens, one of the leading landscape design trends made popular by Piet Oudolf, Noel Kingsbury, and Thomas Rainer. But they can be difficult to manage and when left to their own devices they can quickly spiral out of control. Maintaining the balance of plants and developing the structure of the garden are important.
Taking inspiration from the gardens of Christopher Lloyd, Derek Jarman, and Henk Gerritsen, Cultivating Chaos teaches designers how to create beautiful, species-rich gardens. It offers advice on how to add discipline without losing the charming informality of the plants. It also includes tips on improving soil to maximize the chance of germination, advice on the best plants to start with, and lists of plants for different sites and conditions.
Cultivating Chaos is a lushly photographed and timely reference for students and professionals in the fields of garden and landscape design.

Edibles A to Z 177
176 Edibles A to Z
OnionsOnions have a reputation for being a challenging
crop, but these culinary essentials are actually a
cinch when you choose the right types and use the
right timing for our region. For a year-round kitchen
staple, choose storage types, like pungent yellow bul-
bing onions and lesser-known—but extremely easy to
grow in our region—perennial multiplier onions. Crisp
green onions give your cooking a professional touch,
and they’re very easy to grow. For a growing guide
for perennial multiplier onions (i.e., potato onions
and shallots) see the October chapter; if you plan to
grow perennial onions, be sure to order bulbs well in
advance of fall planting.
GROWING Bulbing onions have only a short window of
time to grow before spring heat or lengthening days trig-
ger the bulbs to stop growing and start drying down. To
ensure they have enough time to grow before this hap-
pens, Southeast gardeners sow onion seeds in the fall
through very early spring, and choose the right varieties
for our latitude. Short Day (SD) types bulb with 10–12 hours
of daylight; grow these south of 35ºN. Northern garden-
ers grow Long Day (LD) types, which bulb with 14–16 hours
of daylight; these are best grown north of 38ºN. If you’re
in between these latitudes, like many of us in the Upper
South, choose LD varieties that mature on the early side
(look at the day length), or choose SD varieties. You’ll have
the best results if you sow in fall and keep the seedlings
growing over winter in the greenhouse, cold frame, or
under row cover.
In the Upper South, sow bulbing onion seeds in a cold
frame or greenhouse. In the Lower South, gardeners can
direct sow bulbing onion seeds in the garden. Sow the
seeds ½ inch apart if you plan to transplant later, or 2
inches apart if you direct sow. Thin to about 3 inches apart.
Cover with fine soil or compost, ¼–½ inch deep. Be sure
to transplant when the seedlings are still a little narrower
than a pencil, and by early spring (February). Onions don’t
tolerate weeds, so prioritize weeding this crop. Provide
ample moisture. Organic mulch helps keep down the weeds
and keeps in water and nutrients. Practice crop rotation of
at least three years to control pests and diseases.
Traditional green onions (often sold as bunching onions)
only do really well in our region in the fall through spring
(under cover where winters are cold). Sow them just like
bulbing onions, but at about ½ inch apart and thin or trans-
plant to at least 1 inch apart. (Turn to perennial bunching
chives for green onion style in the hottest months.) Sow
just once in the fall, or for lots sow once in the fall and
again in the early spring. A single sowing can be harvested
over an extended period.
HARVESTING For bulbing onions, pull up the whole crop
in one harvest for the easiest curing and storage. When
half of the tops have fallen over, pull up the bulbs and cure
them by hanging or spreading under cover with good ven-
tilation, for two to three weeks. They’re done curing when
the necks have thoroughly dried. Clip off the tops to within
1 inch of the bulb and store in mesh bags in a well-ventilated
place. For green onions, whenever the tops are big enough,
you can start harvesting. Pull them up whole.
VARIETIES Short Day (SD) varieties: Texas Early Grano
(100 days) is often called the mother of all sweet onions,
and Granex hybrid (80 days) is one of the famous sweet
Vidalia types. Long Day (LD) varieties: Yellow of Parma
(110 days) was the best storage onion in our 2011 trials, and
Red Wethersfield (100 days) was grown by Jefferson at
Monticello.
For green onions, Deep Purple (60 days) brings extra
color, just on the bottoms. Evergreen Hardy White (65
days) reliably overwinters even in The North.
SEED SAVING Isolate varieties by a minimum of 150 feet.
For pure seed, cage plants or isolate by ¼–½ mile.
ParsnipsSweet, nutty parsnips are hardy, easy-to-grow root
vegetables, closely related to carrots. Parsnips are
slow growing, so be patient! They’re worth the wait.
Heavy frosts sweeten the roots, and they’ll happily
wait in the ground until you’re ready to harvest. For
gardeners looking to eat locally year round, parsnips
are an old staple worth rediscovering.
GROWING Sow parsnip seeds ½ inch deep, one to two
seeds per inch, in rows 18 inches apart, as soon as the
soil can be worked in the spring, and by July at the latest.
Very far-south and coastal areas may have better results
sowing in September for spring harvest. Soak the seeds
for 24 hours before sowing to help germination. When your
plants emerge, thin to 4-inch spacing. Your soil should be
well drained and not too rich. The top 10 inches or deeper
should be loose and clod free. Don’t let the soil dry out
while the seeds are germinating, which can take up to three
weeks. Sow radishes every 3–4 inches to prevent soil crust-
ing and mark the rows. Liberal mulch will help give even
moisture to the plants.
HARVESTING Use a garden fork to loosen the soil around
the roots before pulling them. For the best-tasting pars-
nips, harvest after a few frosts. You can leave the plants in
the ground all winter, but cover them with a thick layer of
organic mulch and harvest before new top growth starts
in the spring. Parsnips grown in frost-free areas may not
develop the same “frost-touched” sweetness. Cut off the
leaves ¼ inch above the top of the root and store as you
would carrots.
VARIETIES Heirloom varieties Hollow Crown and Turga
both have stout roots good for clay soils. Both are ready in
about 100 days, perfect for either spring or fall sowings.
SEED SAVING Isolate varieties of this biennial by ¼ mile
for home use. Overwinter and allow to flower. Harvest
seeds when they are brown and allow them to dry in a
single layer for two weeks.

Noel Kingsbury is a well-known designer, commentator, and writer on plants, gardens, landscape, and the environment. His doc-torate in horticultural ecology from the Uni-versity of Sheffield focused on the selection and management of ornamental perennials and he is still engaged in active research in this field. Noel is interested in combining natives and non-natives in ecological plant-ing schemes and a passionate advocate for sustainable plant combinations that require minimal intervention from the gardener. He trials plants and gardens at his home on the border between England and Wales and travels widely.
Jo Whitworth is an award-winning photog-rapher based in the UK. Her inspirational images feature in a wide range of books and magazines. While taking photographs for this book, she discovered the original seed-beds where Victorian breeders conducted their trials, found colonies of wild daffo-dils alive and well in British meadows, and photographed contemporary breeders at work across the British Isles from Cornwall to Scotland.

The DaffodilKingsbury& WhitworthTP logo
[front flap]US$00.00Daffodils are the quintessential spring flower, their arrival in our gardens, parks, and woodlands a sure sign that winter is drawing to a close. Their popularity and resilience have gained them a foothold in many corners of the globe, where enthusiasts have ex-perimented with their basic trumpet-and-petal design to raise over 25,000 cultivars in every imaginable shade of yellow. As much a symbol of renewal and vitality as a garden plant, daffodils have colonized paintings, ceramics, and poetry and become a metaphor for the relationship between humans and nature, their wildness and opti-mistic spirit brightening our homes in the dark days of winter.
This book charts the remarkable story of the daffodil from the tombs of the Pharaohs, through pre-Darwin evolu-tionary theory, to Cornwall’s burgeon-ing bulb business and diversification efforts by breeders seeking the defini-tive bloom. Today’s gardeners have a rich palette including the pink-cupped Backhouse hybrids, the star-like ‘Firebrand’ bred by Engleheart, and P. D. Williams’s ‘Killigrew’, described as “perfect in form, balance, and quality.” Garden cultivation notes, descriptions, and recommendations introduce the delights of the less well-known daf-fodils such as the fragrant Jonquils and windswept Narcissus cyclamineus without neglecting the classics such as
