USING THE PROGRAM BOOKLET

This program booklet contains all the information you need to know about the Two-Day Conference. A

summary of general information and special events is highlighted on these pages. The headings on the

program pages indicate the day of the activities and the descriptive key for workshops is organized

sequentially by time segments. A sample entry of a session appears below.

REGISTRATION

A person can register for either one or two days. A one-day registration fee is $150 for members and $180

for non-members. A two-day registration fee is $200 for members and $230 for non-members. Both one-

day and two-day registration fees include membership in AMTNJ for 2013.

Meal costs are not included in the registration fee.

The cost for the breakfast workshops is $10 per ticket, the cost for luncheon workshop is $20 per ticket and

the cost for the dinner banquet is $30 per ticket.

Full-time students and retirees will receive a 50% discount on the registration fee (discount does not apply to

either the breakfast workshops or the dinner banquet.).

Advanced registration is advised in order to receive tickets for the breakfast workshops and dinner

banquet.

Name badges, program booklet and breakfast and lunch workshops and dinner banquet tickets (if

purchased) will be mailed to you if your registration is received before September 15, 2012. All other name

badges, program booklets and breakfast and lunch workshops and dinner banquet tickets must be picked up

at the Registration table.

Through submission of the registration form, you authorize AMTNJ and their successors and assigns, to use

and publish tapes and photographs of you in any materials or media published by or under its authority taken

during an AMTNJ meeting.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS

AMTNJ is an approved provider of PD hours by the NJ Department of Education. The presenter, at the end

of every session and workshop, will distribute certificates. Additionally, as previously mentioned,

certificates will be given to all attendees who visit the exhibitors.

CONFERENCE STRANDS

Exhibits and Exhibitors

AMTNJ acknowledges the contribution our exhibitors make as they partner with us to make Math

Education all it can be. Our conference wouldn’t be complete without a wide-range of exhibitors who

bring the latest products and resources available to teachers.

Please take the time to visit our Exhibitors located in the Windsor Ballroom. The Ballroom is a place

you can discover and evaluate new tools and technology that can be incorporated in the classroom

Page 10: Thursday October 4, 2012 Crreeaattiinngg CCo mmoonn ...amtnj.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/program-draft-14-8-171.pdf1 Please visit for the complete program Thursday October 4, 2012

Several special functions will be held, most of which will be partially supported by various commercial

vendors. Where charges are indicated, they are below the actual cost due to the underwriting by our

sponsors. All functions involving charges require advance registration; seating is limited. Please register for

these workshops functions on the same form you use for conference registration. Tickets will be available at

the conference, but only on a first come basis if seating is still available.

Thursday Workshop Breakfast: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt will sponsor a breakfast workshop from

7:00AM- 8:30AM in Conference Rooms C & D. The speaker, Dr. Edward B. Burger is a Professor of

Mathematics and Lissack Professor for Strategic Responsibility and Personal Ethics at Williams College.

The title of Dr. Burger’s presentation is Crafting Creative Thinkers: Thinking Through the Common

Core. In this workshop we will explore the true life sessions that math can offer, after our students have

forgotten all the facts and how to solve for “x”. We will include some entertaining math hijinks that will lead

to deep and profound ideas to illustrate our approach. In essence, we will together, consider the big-picture

question: How can we teach our students to think effectively and independently and become curious, life-

long learners? Tickets are available for purchase and the cost is $10.00 per person.

Thursday Workshop Luncheon: Conquer Mathematics will sponsor a luncheon from 12:30PM –

2:00PM in Conference Rooms C & D. A presentation entitled, Stop Teaching in a Bubble: A K-12 View

of Common Core Connections Across Grades will be presented by Nancy Schultz, the owner of Conquer

Mathematics. There is an alternative to teaching on only one grade level or course. Every student can and

will benefit when teachers design lessons cognizant of the connection between grade levels. In this

workshop participants will: increase their understanding by performing hands-on activities relating

elementary topics to high school content, realize the importance of the connection between elementary and

high school topics, broaden knowledge of content at other levels and discover the benefit of teaching with a

wider view of topics. Tickets are available for purchase and the cost is $20.00 per person.

Past Presidents Reception: By Invitation Only

On Thursday, a special reception will be held for the past presidents of AMTNJ from 3:00PM - 4:00PM in

JT’s Restaurant & Pub.

AMTNJ Annual Business Meeting: Open to All This meeting will be held from 5:00PM – 6:00 PM in the Amphitheater

Thursday Dinner Banquet / Max Sobel Award Presentation: Texas Instruments will sponsor this

dinner, which will start at 6:30 PM and will be held in the Windsor Ballroom. The Max Sobel award winner

will be announced. Then a presentation entitled, Creating Common Core Standards-Based Lessons

WITH Technology vs. WITHOUT Technology will be presented by Stan Semones of Texas Instruments.

By 2014, the PARCC Assessment System will be designed to measure the knowledge, skills and

understandings essential to achieving college and career readiness. In mathematics, this includes conceptual

understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application and problem-solving as defined by the Common

Core State Standards. It is critical that all students demonstrate mastery of the skills and knowledge described

in the standards. Technology can be used not only to measure students’ tasks which involve connecting

mathematical content and mathematical practices, but also to deliver, represent, model and visualize that

contentment to deepen student understanding.

Tickets are available for purchase and the cost is $30.00 per person.

Friday Workshop Breakfast: Glencoe/McGraw-Hill will sponsor a breakfast workshop from 7:00AM-

8:30AM in Conference Rooms C & D. The speaker, Dinah Zike is known for designing hands-on

manipulatives that are used nationally and internationally by teachers, parents, and educational publishing

companies. The title of Ms. Zike’s presentation is Foldables. Teachers can create 3-d graphic organizers to

help students succeed. This will be a hands-on session.

Tickets are available for purchase and the cost is $10.00 per person.

42. Creating Common Core Standards-

Based Lessons WITH Technology vs.

WITHOUT Technology

General Interest By 2014, the PARCC Assessment System will be

designed to measure the knowledge, skills and

understandings essential to achieving college and

career readiness. In mathematics, this includes

conceptual understanding, procedural skill and

fluency, and application and problem-solving as

defined by the Common Core State Standards. It

is critical that all students demonstrate mastery of

the skills and knowledge described in the

standards. Technology can be used not only to

measure students’ tasks which involve connecting

mathematical content and mathematical practices,

but also to deliver, represent, model and visualize

that content to deepen student understanding.

Volunteers Needed for AMTNJ’s Centennial

Celebration In 2014, AMTNJ (Association of Mathematics Teachers of New Jersey) will be celebrating its 100th birthday as an association. AMTNJ is one of

the oldest mathematics teacher organizations in the country. It is even

older than NCTM (National Council of Mathematics Teachers of New Jersey), which was founded in 1928. Many events are being planned for

this spectacular occasion, but we need volunteers for a variety of

committees. If you would like to volunteer to help on a committee, please email us your name, email address, and phone number to [email protected].
