Inquiry Learning: Indigenous Cultures

This term our whole school inquiry is learning topic is: Indigenous Cul-

tures. Our focus question is: How are indigenous communities around

the world alike and different? As a school we are looking at our local

indigenous cultures in our region and have had several visitors to our

school. We have had Brett Clarke teaching our students an indigenous

song in traditional language of the Peek Whurrong. Fiona Clarke

shared her story ‘Minkgill chases the rainbow’ a story about stars

(minkgill) and a rainbow serpent. The students have been learning

about indigenous story telling using symbols and looking at nature for

changing indigenous seasons. Year threes and fours are creating

Minkgill Lanterns and year fix and sixes have created clapsticks with a

personal message in symbols. The students will continue their learning

journey and we will celebrate our learning with as a part of the folky concert.

Foundation/Grade 1’s

This week is another exciting week at PFCS. We have been lucky enough this week to work with Brett Clarke

and Fiona Clarke as part of our Folk Festival and Inquiry focus. In Reading and Writing we have been start-

ing our phonics focus so that we are able to de-code words for reading and spelling. In Maths we are learn-

ing words and numbers to 100 and practising counting strategies.

Grade 1/2’s

This week has been a week of Special Events. On Monday and Tuesday we enjoyed songs by Brett Clarke

and stories by Fiona Clarke as part of our Folk Festival and Inquiry focus. Thankyou to the many parents and

carers who came to "Meet the Teacher" It was great to meet you all. We are looking forward to the House

Sports tomorrow. Children can wear House colours or school uniform. Classroom focus: In Reading and

Writing we have been starting our "phonics" focus so that we are able to decode words for Reading, Writing

and Spelling. In Maths we are learning words and numbers to 100 and practising counting strategies.

Grade 3/4’s

From early zigzags to a more solid and contoured form - school is slowly beginning to take its shape as we

come to the end of our testing and move into a balanced routine. The 3/4’s have been incessantly

practising their relay running skills with their fellow housemates on the lower oval in preparation for the

School Athletics on Friday. The grade 3’s have had their first taste of the Kitchen program - pardon the pun!

They were also lucky to have some lovely weather for their inaugural Garden session, pleasing Mrs. Gray

with their enthusiasm and attitude. Good luck to everybody on Friday!

Grade 5/6’s

This week 5/6's have completed a Placement test for reading, a spelling test, provided an unassisted sample

of a recount and looked at Fractured Fairy tales. In Maths we are practising formal addition algorithms as

well as strengthening our ability to round numbers off and estimate their totals. We are about to take part in

the House Sports tomorrow and we would like to thank the ambassadors for helping organise the sports. Also

a big thank you to Mrs Green for her hard work. Good luck house teams!

Another fantastic turn out to swimming tryouts Wednesday morning with 33 children attending!

Unfortunately not all of these students will make the team due to the qualifying times required. All students

should be proud of their efforts and commitment to attend the early morning sessions. I will talk to the

swimming group and inform them who has qualified and only those students will attend the next two

sessions. Thankyou to all the parent helpers again this morning, great work in hectic conditions!

House Athletic Sports are on this Friday at Brauerander. Please make sure you have returned your

permission slip and bus payment. A reminder of house colours for those new families: SANDPIPERS(Yellow),

GANNETS (Red), LAPWINGS (Green), SHEARWATERS (Purple).

We will be leaving school by bus, hopefully by 9:15 and commence the Sports at 10:00am. The day will

start with House Relays and then move onto sport rotations. Rotations will conclude at 1:30, we will break

for a BBQ lunch and presentations. We will depart Brauerander at 2:15 and be back at school by 3:00pm.

Thankyou to those parents and friends who have already volunteered to help on the day. Please

remember to bring your hat, snacks, drink bottle and sunscreen. Looking forward to a fun and exciting

day!
