SCHOOLS AND HAIR MASSACURE Over the past 17 years, school involvement has become an integral element of Hair Massacure, with youth leading our wide demographic of supporters. Today, Hair Massacure brings in well over half of its funding through the school system, making it one of the most philanthropic causes amongst young people in Alberta. A competitive movement has spread within the school communities, in efforts to “pink and shear” the most students and raise the highest pledges. In the province, three top elementary schools - Gibbons School, Neil M.Ross and Leo Nickerson Elementary have proudly held title of highest school participation and pledges climbing up to a whopping $72,000.00. To this date Leo Nickerson Elementary has achieved Top School hovering over $50,000.00 in pledges and 50% school participation. The impact of Hair Massacure expands far past fundraising and raising awareness. This unique movement encompasses the element of philanthropy, empathy, and community building through teamwork. Student involvement breeds opportunity for all to feel empowered both as leaders and team players within their own circles. We are very appreciative of the funding and efforts of the school community, recognizing the commitment put forth to support and organize supportive students. Thank you!

PLEDGES

We are now requesting a minimum of $100.00 in pledges per participant. A Kali Bear will be awarded to participants with pledges of $500.00 or over! All funds will go towards supporting Wishes for children and pediatric cancer research here in Alberta!

HOW TO GET YOUR SCHOOL / TEAM INVOLVED: School involvement is spread through word of mouth, social media, or heightened interest via a student, teacher or administrator. The first step is determining the interest level among other students and teachers within a school. If there appears to be interest, this will need to be presented to the school via the teachers and school principal. SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES School Assemblies are the most effective way to inform the entire school about the event and why the stu-dents should be involved. When possible, one of the Founders of Hair Massacure, or a member of the team may is happy to come out to the school! We can also provide a video, please contact us for more info! REGISTERING YOUR TEAM Registration is now open. Be sure to register your school first and then have your students begin signing up as members of your school team. Each pledge will count towards the overall fundraising for your school! PLEDGE PACKAGES Pledge packages are available to download from our Registration Page on our website. Hard copy pledge packages for schools in closer proximity to Edmonton can be provided when the school requests a presenta-tion and Kali Bear Icons to sell.

Tips for Organizing Students Appoint team leaders (teachers and parents) to form a Hair Massacure committee Newletters should be sent to parents providing information about Hair Massacure and the expectations of the school Create a school team through our registration site first. Share the name of your team and invite students and their families to join. Share the vision with your students as to the fundraising goal. Arrange a brief weekly gathering at recess with all participating students checking in on their status of fundraising, answering questions and offering tips for success. Assist families with printing packages for them if they do not have access to hard copies or a printer A verbal reminder to students and a written reminder to parents (attached to pledge packages) to go through, verify and sign their children’s packages including release forms (located on the back of our enve-lope). Book a time with us to arrange students to shave together! Set a time at the mall when its students can all meet to shave and or donate together. Parents can be with their kids on their special day. Help arrange rides for students who do not have a ride to the mall. Have a Teacher or Faculty Member agree to shave or pink if the school reaches a certain fundraising total!

THE KALI BEAR PROGRAM

Kali Bear program provides opportunity for students not pinking or shaving to contribute to Hair Massacure and the fight again pediatric cancers. The Kali Bear Program was introduced to schools years ago by a supporting school in Lethbridge. Bears were sold throughout the community and an added $10,000.00 was raised in sales alone. Bundles of 25 bears and collection sheets went out to student fundraisers who were not col-lecting pledges for shaving or pinking. This year our goal is to see how many times we can #wraptherink with Kali Bears! Inquire about how your school can be involved.

THE KALI BEAR ICON

Kali Bear icons demonstrate the commitment of a school’s support for Hair Massacure. Paper Kali Bears requests have grown in popularity. The visual of Kali Bears lining the office, classrooms and hallways reflects student names and positive messages. This has been identified as a morale booster, particularly with the presence of pink hair!

PINKING TOGETHER AT A COSMETOLOGY SCHOOL

Make advance arrangements with a cosmetology school (MC College) or another school with a cosmetolo-gy lab and bus students there to pink as a group. Ensure that the cosmetology school registers with us to receive our salon information package. KALI PINK is available for schools at our online store or at participating Edmonton Salons and various loca-tions around Edmonton. Each student purchases their own jar, or the school may purchase for them if fi-nances are tight. If the student does not use all of the jar, they can take the remainder home for touch-ups. Refer to website about orders and locations to purchase KALI PINK.

PINK YOUR HAIR AT A PARTICIPATING SALON

Students can book their own appointments at one of our supporting salons and pink with family or friends. You can locate a participating salon by visiting either our Edmonton Salons page on our website. In 2019, salons will be charging $25 for pinking and $45 for bleaching and pinking.

PINK AT HOME

This is the most convenient option available. KALI PINK is available for schools at our online store or at par-ticipating salons. Bulk orders can be made through our long-time supporter and supplier Colin Parker by email at [email protected]

Bleaching and Pinking at home is easier than you think!

All you need is: Jar of KALI PINK (produced by Manic Panic)

Manic Panic Bleach Kit (bleach bowl, brush and gloves included) 2 packages of artificial sweetener (per bleach bowl) to reduce tingling of the scalp

An assistant Old Towels

Recommended - hair conditioner for coloured hair, bleach for sink/tub and shower curtain when rinsing

Old pillow case (for the next few weeks!)

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR PINK LOOKING BRIGHT! Have a jar of Kali Pink on hand for touch-ups. It can be shared between family members and its easy to ap-ply dry or damp. Goop it on and run an comb through while damp, add heat with a large plastic bag (grocery bags work) and a towel and let sit for 15 minutes. Rinse with cold water. Always shampoo and rinse in lukewarm to cold water. Heat opens up the hair shaft and encourages quick fading. Cold closes the cuticles on the hair. If going to the ocean or pool, wear a cap. Chlorinated and salt water pools will pull the quickly pink put of your hair.

PINKING—IN-SCHOOL PINKING EVENTS This is only recommended if the school has proper sinks to rinse hair safely. Hair must not be rinsed with students leaving forward to avoid bleach or colour getting into the eyes. Home Ec labs have been used if the student is able to lay facing upward on the counter in close proximity to the sink. An inexpensive rub-ber spray attachment is highly recommended for faucets that do not have a sprayer. In School-Pinking Info: Practising safe bleaching and pinking procedures enhances the entire experience of each participating stu-dent. Expect 2-3 hours to allowing for bleaching and pinking. Schools can host pinkings after school, and solic-it parents, teachers and local hair stylists to help out. Hair Massacure does not have the capacity to organize or support off site events nor can we assume responsibility. We ask that all schools register with us, and noti-fy that you are hosting your own event. Things you will need:

LOSING THE LOCKS

Your school will probably want to lose their hair together. Hair Massacure’s highlight is event day when it’s time for participants to lose their bright pink hair through shaving or donation! SHAVING: ‘Proud Victims’

Shaving can be a fun, rewarding and life altering experience! Shaving shows empathy for young pediatric cancer patients and is by far the most successful way to fundraise for students. Many of our supporters return several times to Hair Massacure because they thoroughly enjoy their experience.

BEARD CHALLENGES

Bring in your furry faced teachers, friends and family to lose the beard. There is something for everyone! Pinking your beard works just like other hair! HAIR DONATION Donation has become increasingly popular over the years. Due to the time required for processing, our styl-ists cannot provide a finished hair style. We are collecting healthy, unlayered hair - a minimum of 10 inch-es. Visit our HAIR DONATION page to learn more. Did you know that Hair Massacure has proudly partnered with 360 Hair -the only Canadian Wig Company who customizes wigs in houseÉ All wig requests from Canadian kids suffering hair loss are provided free of

charge. The average quality wig can cost 3,000 - 5,000 dollars. There are 2 ways to donate your hair – at the Salon or at the Mall.
