CONGRATULATIONS TO SKIPTON’S BOWLERS I am delighted to be able to tell you that in response to my query
for a result of play, the text message came back that
Skipton has won the Division 3 Grand Final for 2018. Congratulations to all of those who played on the day and to all
who have filled the teams throughout the season. Unfortunately that will need to wait until we resume after the break as there are deadlines to
meet for all publications. It was a very windy afternoon for us all.
On Saturday 24th March Preliminary Final: Having had to postpone play in the
Bowls last weekend due to last weekend’s two days of Total Fire Ban, the Skipton’s
Team travelled down to Derrinallum on Saturday to play Camperdown in the delayed
Preliminary Final at Derrinallum.
The morning started out with the weather looking as though it may intervene again,
but once play started in the afternoon it turned out to be fine and sunny.
Congratulations to all of Skipton Players, they defeated Camperdown 103shots to 77
shots. Well done all.
On Sunday, 25th of March, the players again met at the Club to set out in their

looked around and saw how overgrown the creek area
was, which got me thinking.
Shortly after that we spoke to a local resident who
also stated his concern for the creek area. I made a
few prompt emails and phone calls to see what could
be done. I subsequently met onsite with Michael Allan
from Corrections Victoria and I arranged a crew to
come and whipper snip and clean up the area.
I am hoping that the work has been done while I am
away in New Zealand. The crew come out and do
community work as part of their repayment to the
community. There is absolutely no reason why any
local should feel insecure with this crew in town as
they are well supervised and no threat to the
community. If the first round of work goes well I will
endeavour to get more visits by the Corrections crew
on a regular basis.
It is great to see the improvement works being done
on the Beaufort Road with new curb and channelling
and eventual resealing of the road. With these works
in mind, please pay attention to all speed restriction
signs and road work speed limits of 40 km/h.
Remembering that the workers on site would love to
go home to their families, not to hospital. Whilst on
the topic, please pay attention to the Lismore Rd with
the current re surfacing works around the Mt
Widderin area.
I will endeavour to make it to the football club to get
around to meeting everyone before round 1. I will
need to trade in my Dunnstown apparel for some
Skipton gear if anyone can help me out.
Some of you may have passed the station in recent
weeks to see some major works going on. We are in
the process of erecting new fences and installing new
gardens and lawns at the station and residence.
Hopefully we can be moved in before the end of
March.
Just a friendly reminder of police
attendance & times:
Being the only member in town, I work an 8 hr shift
at varying times of the day.
If I am working and not at the office, I will have the
station phone diverted to the police mobile.
If I am unable to take your call, please leave a
message and I will return your call as soon as
possible.
If I am not working and you call the station, the
phone will be diverted to Warrnambool.
If you require urgent police assistance call 000 and
they will call me to attend to any urgent matters.
I thank you for your cooperation and look forward to
the years ahead. Regards Craig Walker.

Community relief fund launched to support fire affected communities
Emergency Management Victoria (EMV) has partnered with Bendigo Bank to establish a Community Relief Fund in support of community members affected by the Southwest Victoria fires.
The Fund aims to support communities across Colac-Otway, Corangamite, Warrnambool, Moyne, and Southern Grampians areas where the fires have destroyed homes and impacted primary producers.
The Fund provides a formal channel for the public to donate money directly to affected communities and is designed to achieve positive outcomes for the community, by working directly with local recovery committees and structures to inform and drive the distribution of funds.
Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley said emergency management agencies and local communities faced tough conditions last weekend with high temperatures and strong winds, on the back of an extremely dry period.
Fire fighting and rescue crews attended more than 160 grass and bushfires and responded to more than 1,000 requests for assistance.
The Community Relief Fund is a vital part of encouraging affected communities to play an integral role in managing their own recovery, by being part of the Fund distribution process,
along with councils and the emergency management sector. Community members who want to help can donate to the Fund, which will be distributed collectively across impacted communities, rather than individuals or specific groups.
The Community Relief Fund is facilitated through a Memorandum of Understanding between EMV and Bendigo Bank. It is delivered through the Bendigo Bank branch network, and has already been used for the collection and distribution of donated funds following emergencies. The Fund was utilised in Victoria’s Scotsburn community following the 2015 December fires, with $82,000 of donated funds being directly provided to the affected community.
Funds raised will be used for a range of locally identified charitable initiatives such as clean-up activities, business support or counselling, temporary fencing, and water quality control measures.
Chairman of Cobden and Districts Community Bank®, James Green, said the local branch and wider Bendigo Bank network were keen to do all they could to help local people following the fires. “Cobden and Camperdown Community Banks have put an initial $5,000 each into the Community Relief Fund.” "Further funds raised now will be ready to be distributed to those in need, when and where they need it."
Skipton Community News Page 22
The two days of the weekend of 17th and 18th of March were
declared Days of Total Fire Ban and with the very strong winds
fires that began during the night due to “dry lightning” spread
throughout the dairy farming communities of the Corangamite
Shire and neighbouring districts.
Although obviously “after the event” SCN could only publish
general contact information last edition but during the week I
have received valuable information from Corangamite Shire with
more specific contact details of how we in Skipton & District and
further afield can assist those affected by the awful fires.
I am including the more relevant of the media information I have
received from Corangamite Shire during the week for readers of
Skipton & District in SCN this edition (omitting details specific to
those who are directly involved) because I believe that farmers
and businesses in Skipton & District are deeply affected by what
has been seen on our news services since the St Patrick’s Day
Fires throughout the Corangamite Shire and concern also to
those people in other locations to our west in Penshurst,
Caramut, Hawkesdale and the Gazette District.

The fire at Terang and Cobden is now contained.
Firefighters have been able to stop the spread of the
fire. There is currently no threat to communities, but
you should continue to stay informed and monitor
conditions.
SMOKE FROM PEAT FIRES
A number of peat fires continue to smoulder in the Cobrico
area, causing smoke / health issues for residents. The Relief
Centre in Terang was opened last night to provide refuge for
residents impacted by the smoke.
Peat fires smoulder for a long time and can be difficult to put
out. Smoke contains fine particles, water vapour and gases
including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen
oxides. Some peat fires may produce sulphur compounds which
can be odorous.
A fact sheet is available on the DHHS website
(www2.health.vic.gov.au) with details about peat fire smoke.
Please keep monitoring the VicEmergency website:
www.emergency.vic.gov.au for updates.
Anyone experiencing difficulty breathing, wheezing or tightness in the chest should seek urgent medical assistance – call 000.
People with a heart or lung condition, including asthma,
