The FunMaths Roadshow

2

During our first five years as a hub for Liverpool University, Tapton has made well over 100 visits to schools in Sheffield and the surrounding area. Schools who were involved were highly impressed by the activities and students gave very positive responses.

You may have seen photographs on school notice boards, websites and prospectuses of students participating in the Roadshow across the city.

Tapton was the first school to become a hub and the venture has been so successful that Liverpool University has expanded the number of school hubs across the Country.

What is The FunMaths Roadshow?

Created in 1998 to celebrate the centenary of the Liverpool Mathematical Society, owned and licensed by the LivMS, the FunMaths Roadshow is a pupil-centred resource, suitable for all year groups and abilities from Year 2 to Year 13.

* Reality Maths is functional maths for Y12, including non maths students.

How does it work?• Each box contains 25 activities covering a huge range of mathematics.

• All of the boxes have a wide spread of difficulty and so are suitable for all abilities.

• Every activity consists of an A3 baseboard and in most cases, pieces to manipulate.

• Each session lasts for between 45 and 75 minutes, a length suited to your pupils and school day.

• The pupils work in pairs or threes so that they can discuss their work.

• They may attempt any of the activities in any order.

•Staff are supplied with answers to the problems so they can check pupils’ work.

What space is needed?

• A large hall, with enough two person tables laid out for about 60 A3 baseboards, and enough room for students to safely move between tables. An alternative to a standard, two person size table is two exam desks put together.

• Each session can handle up to 90 pupils, mainly in pairs, with a few students in groups of three.

• The pupils will only need a pencil.

• We will email you a template for a personalised certificate afterwards.

Feedback and commentsFeedback from parents:“Both the children and myself really enjoyed this mornings maths games. Well done for bringing this kind of interest to the children’s maths work! “

“Fantastic way to learn – maintained children’s attention. Really enjoyed it! “

“It was really enjoyable to take part in this hands-on exercise with the children and to see them working together as a team and helping each other.”

Feedback from teachers:“Thank you for the wonderful Maths Roadshow this morning. My Y5 class really enjoyed the activity, especially the boys! The children enjoyed the shortness of the tasks, the challenge of trying to get them all done (impossible I’m sure!) and the chance to walk around with no restrictions on the noise level!”

“The Maths Roadshow was a great success and the children thoroughly enjoyed the morning. The problem solving activities covered a wide range of mathematical abilities and areas of the curriculum. The tasks were rich and varied and there was something for everyone! It was wonderful to see the children working together, helping and supporting one another.”

“The teachers and children really enjoyed it. There was something for everyone, it was fun, different and challenging for the children. The event was very well organised and ran smoothly.”

“We enjoyed a morning of fantastic practical maths today, as Simon’s Fun Maths Roadshow came to town. All the children from Y2-Y6 had the chance to work in pairs to solve a range of problems and logic puzzles. Simon was very impressed with how the children worked together and showed lots of determination in solving some really challenging questions. The tangrams and the 3D visualising were particular favourites!Well done everyone, and thank you Simon!”

What do the Pupils Do?• The number of activities completed by a

pupil is not important, however on average pupils complete 8 - 12 activities in the session (considerably more if supported by older pupils).

• At the end of the session, the pupils complete a self evaluation looking at which activities they have enjoyed and which they have found challenging.

Empowering Pupils- Older pupils can be brought in to act as additional staff.- The older pupils get a great sense of achievement from

this, and their maths benefits from having to explain things to the younger pupils.

- The younger pupils benefit from having the older pupils there as they can be easier to talk problems through with

than adults.

Community Links- This is an excellent opportunity to strengthen links

between primary and secondary schools.- Secondary school pupils can be taken to a feeder

primary to support the primary pupils.- Parents and governors can be encouraged to come in

to have a go at the activities alongside the pupils.

Gifted and Talented- The Roadshow also provides an opportunity for gifted and talented KS2 pupils to go to the secondary schools

to work alongside KS3 pupils on the Roadshow.
