Thayer Oregon Military Museum at Camp Withycombe as a major regional attraction that celebrates Oregon’s military history from Native American warriors and the founding of the Oregon National Guard through the present day. To provide hands-on educational programs on Oregon’s military history for school children and the public, without regard to size of audience, location, or ability to pay. The Museum is named in honor of Brigadier General James B. Thayer, one of Oregon’s finest military and civic leaders. James Thayer joined the U.S. Army in 1942, earning the prestigious Silver and Bronze Stars for his combat service in Europe during World War II. Second Lieutenant Thayer’s anti-tank mine platoon discovered and liberated a Nazi death camp, Gunskirchen Lager, near Wels, Austria, saving the lives of more than 15,000 Hungarian Jewish prisoners.
