Come, Visit the Lord In the Blessed Sacrament
The scriptures tell us that God is love and that where charity and love prevail there God is ever found. In the gospel we are told that the church is the body of Christ and is comprised of living stones. Yet over the years, many of us thought that the church was a building, a House of God in which worship takes place. As the church family of St. Andrew’s we are blessed to have a very special dwelling place in which we can gather as the church to offer God our thanks and praise. But make no mistake about it, We are the Church of St. Andrew the Apostle. We gather regularly at 800 NW 5th Street to pray and to celebebrate the Eucharist and the other sacraments through which God is building us up into a community of missionary disciples so we can go forth in peace to glorify God by the way we live our lives. More than 50 years ago, all the bishops of the world gathered at the Vatican for a great church council. It was called Vatican 2 because it was the second such council to meet inside the Vatican’s great Basilica of St. Peter’s. These bishops meeting with the pope called for an updating of the church and its understanding of scripture, doctrine, and sacraments so that the People of God, Christ’s Faithful might take their rightful role in spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ. The Catholic Church prior to this great council was turned in on itself, seeking from the world a special and superior status. Although less than 1% of the members of the church were bishops, priests, or consecrated religious, it appeared that they were the only ones who could aspire to holiness while dominating the rest of the church with all kinds of rules and regulations. Since his election as the Bishop of Rome, Pope Francis has called for a more thoroughgoing implementation of Vatican 2 by renewing our parish communities as places where, above all, love may be found In water, wine and wheat: A banquet hall on holy ground, where peace and justice meet. Thank you, Lord, for making us a church of living stones!

JOURNEY OF FAITH
In today’s Rite of Acceptance and Welcoming, our Inquirers began the process of formal initiation into the Catholic Church.
Those who are not yet baptized were accepted into the Order of Catechumens. Those who are already baptized were welcomed as Candidates for Full Communion.
A primary purpose of celebrating the Rites for the Christian Initiation of Adults is to help all Catholics deepen their understanding of what God’s grace makes possible through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.
The process of initiation involves instruction, prayer, hospitality, and above all, conversion. The entire parish family has an important role to play in this process especially through prayer and hospitality.
Please pray in earnest that these catechumens and candidates will experience a deepening conversion. Pray that they will turn their hearts, their lives, and their wills over to the care of God. Show them hospitality by going out of your way to welcome them so that they will feel at home among us.
How will you know who they are? Consider everyone who sits near you at Mass as someone in need of hospitality.
Treat them all as you would have Christ treat you. They’ll notice.
THERE IS STILL TIME TO BEGIN!
There are 15 presentations, four of which are held on what we call Alpha Retreat Day which is scheduled for Saturday, February 25th.

Stewardship of Treasure Sacrificial Giving
HAVE YOU REVIEWED & RENEWED
YOUR 2017 SACRIFICIAL GIVING?
It’s a very simple process really. Just take a look at your average monthly contributions in 2016 and calculate what percentage of your monthly income that amount represents. If you were giving one percent, why not step up to three percent. That’s only 3 pennies of every dollar earned. Already at three percent, consider asking God for the grace to step up to four or five percent. Keep in mind that according to Jesus himself, the measure you give will be the measure you get back. Sacrificial Giving is about a way of life marked by generosity. The Lord loves cheerful givers!

During January, many parish families have received a letter from Archbishop Coakley asking your family to consider making a pledge to the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal. We ask that you respond as generously as possible by returning your pledge in the mail.
This year, the theme is “God’s Love shines through Us” We have all received God’s love. By financially supporting the ministries and services funded by the Annual Catholic Appeal, we help to extend God’s love to many, many others.
As you review the mailing from Archbishop Coakley, please note the ministries and services funded by the Appeal, including the ones that directly support the work of our parish. We thank you in advance for your generosity.
