CHAPTER I - INTRODUCTION

Project Context

The University recognizes the importance of tracking the success of those who

have received a degree from the institution. Graduate Tracer Study is a graduate or

alumni survey that attempts to trace the activities of the graduates or previous students of

an educational institution. It also evaluates the results of the education and trainings

provided by a particular institution and monitors career progression and development

opportunities after graduation from the College of Engineering Computer Studies and

Technology of Surigao del Sur State University from year 2000 up to 2010 in order to

establish where they are, what they do and what interventions can be made to improve

their professional acivities and services. GTS can provide concrete evidence that will

enable our school board and the wider public to evaluate the school’s most important

product, its graduates in important ways.

The College of Engineering, Computer Studies and Technology of Surigao del

Sur State University has approximately over a hundred graduates since year 2000 in

different programs. The CECST offered several programs namely: Bachelor of Science in

Computer Science, Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Associate in Computer

Technology, Electrical Technology, and Automotive Technology. However it does not

keep a database or record of its graduates’ whereabouts after graduation. This makes it

difficult for the college to know where its graduates are, what they do, and the challenges

they are facing. In order to make CECST’s education relevant, enable curriculum review

and make alumni support possible. Active network of its alumni could be helpful for

obtaining internship and professional position and how well its programs prepared the

graduates for their professional careers of the valuable feedback from graduates and their

employers about the value of the degrees offered by the college, and makes it difficult to

re-structure the curriculum for current students in order for them to acquire knowledge

and skills required in the real world.

ABSTRACT

As the researchers studied about “Graduate Tracer Study”, College of

Engineering, Computer Studies & Technology (CECST) graduates in Surigao del Sur

State University. The graduate tracer study years covered between 2000 up to 2010,

different places, according to the graduates’ addresses.

The study used a survey questionnaire, containing of 35 questions which provide

details of the important information from the alumni. The survey also aimed to assess the

contribution of the university training to graduates’ personal development as well as the

quality of the study in terms of content, delivery and relevance to the world of work.

Online Graduate Tracer Study is an important tool for the academic programs

offered in CECST namely: Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Bachelor of

Science in Computer Science, Associate in Computer Technology, Automotive and

Electrical Technology. The Online Graduate Tracer Study is accessible by the alumni.

The graduates or alumni can access through the system by filling up the online form. The

information needed include what they do and what is there current job, since graduation.

This study is important to the graduates/alumni by just submitting the GTS form

through online. It is necessary to put the exact date and month of graduates birthday, for

them to acknowledge by the administrator. The administrators also automatically send a

confirmation message directly to the mass media database where all the email addresses

given by the graduates/alumni are stored.

Researchers concluded that the Online Graduate Tracer Study of CECST College

is much reliable to monitor the current status employability of graduates.

The method used by the researchers according to the development of the system is

to go through the process of the System Development Life Cycle which means as a tool

used in the development of this system. The phases in the System Development Life

Cycle models include: System Study, Feasibility Study, System Analysis, System Design,

Coding, Testing, Implementation and Maintenance.

Purpose and Description

Online Graduate Tracer Study is an important tool for educational planners, as

they can provide valuable information program and trainings. This information may be

used for minimizing any possible given program in terms of content, delivery and

relevance and for further development of the institution in the context of quality

assurance. It is also a means of measuring school’s success and effectiveness.

The beneficiaries of the study include:

Graduates/Alumni – a registered CECST alumnus can create an account and log – on to

this Online Graduate Tracer Study.

Administrator – can post an opportunity for graduate/alumni.

Instructors/professors – can contact each other and write messages, can give more

information about the latest news updates in school. If it is needed, willing to give advice

regarding its current job.

Students – can view the website and encourage themselves to pursue of what they have

chosen with regards to their field of study.

Researchers – it is important to finish a degree in College for us to have a great

opportunity. The researchers will be encouraged not only for their own benefit but also to

the students enrolled in Surigao del Sur State University (SDSSU) that after graduation

they should be responsible of finding a good job, apply the knowledge of what has been

learned and have a self-confidence to pursue their own effort.

Objectives

The general objective is to build a website for CECST Online Graduate Tracer

Study that would create an account and can update their personal data and can receive

update news from the College.

The specific objectives are:

1. To find out which programs (BSCS, BSCE, ACT, AT, ET) respectively, have

the highest potential for initial highest earnings.

2. To determine the employed/unemployed rate of CECST graduates.

3. To ascertain the reasons for graduate’s unemployment.

4. To discover the reason for a graduate staying on the job.

5. To generate evidences in support of decision through Online Graduate Tracer

Study (OGTS).

Scope and Limitations

PROBLEM: To know the current status of the graduates/alumni including their

present job through CECST Online Graduate Tracer Study.

SUBJECT: CECST: An Online Graduate Tracer Study.

TIME: This research study covers the 1st and 2nd Semesters of School year 2011-

2012.

PLACE: Research Office of Surigao del Sur State University Main Campus,

Tandag City, Surigao del Sur.

CONTENT: CECST: Online Graduate Tracer Study will cover the

graduates/alumni in the year 2000 up to 2010. These determine how many of those

alumni had a job after they graduated from Surigao del Sur State University that were

deemed very useful to their job. This study also establishes a network with whether they

are working in the country or abroad. It will show them an electronic application form to

be filled-up. CECST: Online Graduate Tracer Study can trace the alumni’s employability

that can be very useful to the College in particular and to the whole University in general.

This proposed study covers graduates of the College of Engineering Computer

Studies and Technology from the year 2000-2010. CECST: Online Graduate Tracer

Study can generate how effective the school’s program has been and to monitor their

career status. Data gathering will employ questionnaire which is perceived to have the

limitation bias.

The limit to this study is based on the fact that Online Tracer Study can only

obtain employment data from those alumni who will respond to the questionnaire.

The proposed system designs use the following programming software or

languages:

MYSQL Database- MySQL is a relational database system that is used to store

information. MySQL can store many types of data from something as tiny as a

single character to as large as complete files or graphics. Although it can be

accessed by most programming languages, it is often coupled with PHP because

they work together with ease.

PHP (Language) - The PHP Hypertext Pre-processor (PHP -- yes, the first "P" in

the acronym does indeed stand for PHP!) allows web developers to create

dynamic content that interacts with databases. PHP applications are normally

found on Linux servers and in conjunction with MySQL databases. It provides

those servers with functionality similar to that provided to the Windows platform

by Active Server Pages technology.

APACHE WEB SERVER- is generally recognized as the world's most popular

Web server (HTTP server). Originally designed for UNIX servers, the Apache

Web server has been ported to Windows and other network operating systems

(NOS). The name "Apache" derives from the word "patchy" that the Apache

developers used to describe in the early versions of their software.

DREAM WEAVER CS5- A comprehensive Web site authoring program for

Windows and Mac from Adobe. Dreamweaver is a sophisticated authoring

package that is noted for many advanced features. For example, site designers can

seamlessly move back and forth between visual and HTML modes. Dreamweaver

was originally developed by Macromedia, which was acquired by Adobe in 2005.

CHAPTER II- RELATED LITERATURE

1.1 CAREER AFTER GRADUATION- A EUROPEAN RESEARCH STUDY

[1] The study provided a unique opportunity to examine the extent to which the relationship

between higher education and the world of work are similar or different among the Western

European countries. This became clearer through the inclusion of one country each from the

Central and Eastern European countries and one country outside Europe.

The study also helps to understand the common elements and differences between various

fields of study and occupational areas. Last not least, the study allows examining the extent to

which socio-biographic backgrounds, educational experiences and achievements as well as

transition process determine early career and links between competencies and work assignment.

The aim of the research project ―Higher Education and Graduate Employment in

Europe was to analyze employment and work of graduates from institutions of higher education in

nine European countries during the first few years after graduation. The following objectives were

pursued:

The analysis focused on the transition from higher education to employment and on

employment and work during the first four years after graduation. As educational paths were

identified retrospectively, the study allowed examining the trajectories over a substantial period of

the life-course. The study analyzed inner dynamics the relative autonomy of the transition process,

i.e. the extent to which job search, the transitory employment and unemployment etc. On the part of

the graduates, guidance counseling and assistance in job search on the part of higher education

institutions and employment agencies, as well as recruitment policies on the part of the employers,

shape the graduates’ early career stages.

The project, further aimed to overcome the limitations of most existing statistics and

surveys which do not allow understanding the impact of the various dimensions of higher

education on graduate employment and work. In surveying the provisions and conditions of higher

College of Engineering, Computer Studies and Technology

education and key aspects of study behaviour, this study aimed to provide the evidence of different

degrees of success of success or failure in preparing students for professional life. Also, it aimed to

examine the impact of different models of diversification in Europe. On the one hand, the project

provided an opportunity to examine the need for revision of prevailing concepts in economics and

sociology as regards the relationships between higher education and employment in the light of

changing technologies, values, management and personnel policies as well as endemic uncertainties

and vagueness as regards acquisition and utilization of academic knowledge.

On the other hand, the project team devoted a considerable component of its joint efforts to

the development of a genuinely comparative methodology suitable for analyzing competencies,

employment and work in Europe. Categories were chosen or newly developed which are

sufficiently neutral and polyvalent to allow for a comparative study of employment, work and

utilization of knowledge in a substantial number of European countries.

Altogether the project aimed to provide a solid comparative account on employment and

work of graduates from institutions of higher education in Europe. Information on employment and

work of graduates from institutions of higher educated is generally relevant for decision-making by

politicians, as a valuable information base both for employers and leaders, managers and teachers in

higher education, for educational and career decision-making by students.

Given the widespread consensus on the importance of such information, it is surprising to

note how scattered and weak the available information up to now is. This study provided for the

first time reliable comparative data making use of the potentials of Comparative Study.

A Comparative Study in Europe can be more valuable than national studies in several

important respects. The study was expected to serve as a de-mystification of concepts prevailing in

individual countries-for example regarding the typical problems of certain fields of study, the role of

short-cycle higher education for employment and work, etc.-by showing contrasting evidence from

other societies; or, in contrast, to identify, macro-societal factors which play a role in determining

graduate employment and work; to determine the position of one country in a comparative

perspective. Such”bench-making” of a problem frequently mobilizes efforts for change

more readily than debates within a national context; to develop a conceptual framework for a study

which is not biased by the idiosyncrasies of individual countries of individual countries, but allows

analyzing problems in a genuinely comparative perspective.

The study gives the researchers an outline on how this tracer study will flow. This study

also provided information needed in conducting a tracer study about the graduates of PUPQC batch

2005, their general and employment profile. This also gives information about the factors that affect

the employment of the graduates in other country.

A study entitled “Higher Education and the Demands of Manpower Development

in the Nigerian Manufacturing Sector: An Empirical Study of Enugu and Anambra

States” by Ugwuonah and Omeje of the Institute for Development Studies, University of Nigeria

Enugu Campus Nigeria which is a final report of Tracer Study Research Project on Higher

Education and Work on July, 1998. Says that the importance of education to the national

development project cannot be over-emphasized. Since the attainment of national independence in

October, 1960, the successive Nigerian governments have acknowledged this fact with various

measures of policy commitment and action. Even in electioneering campaigns and national

budgets, politicians and policy makers alike have always recognized and politicized the centrality of

good education especially, higher education to national development. Hence, they have frequently

laid stress on the establishment of more universities, polytechnics and colleges of education,

expansion of existing higher education institutions by creating multi-campus arrangements,

provision of “adequate infrastructural materials, more and well qualified teachers and so

forth. In fact, it is sufficiently clear that a nation which fails to provide good education for her

citizens would sooner or later face the logical antithesis of sustainable development: Mass illiteracy,

obscurantism, superstition, poverty, squalor, disease, de-industrialization and low productivity. This

mainly explains why governments are highly interested in the educational system particularly, in

developing countries. To this end, the Federal Government declared in the preamble to the National

Policy on Education of 1981 (the first clear-cut education policy in Nigeria) that: Education in

Nigeria is no more a private enterprise, but a huge government venture that has witnessed a

progressive evolution of government‘s complete and dynamic intervention and active

participation. The federal government of Nigeria has adopted education as an instrument par

excellence for effecting national development. It is only natural that Government should clarify the

philosophy and objectives that underlie its current massive investment in education and spell out in

clear unequivocal terms the policies that guide Government‘s educational effort. From the

above preambles, it is clear that government recognizes that for it to be quite meaningful, education

has to be pertinently related to the national development agenda. This is further illustrated in the

broad objectives of education in Nigeria formulated in the same National Policy of 1981. The

objectives are the building of a free and democratic society, a just and egalitarian society, a united, a

strong and self-reliant nation, a great and dynamic economy, a land of bright and full opportunities

for all citizens. Although these objectives may sound too propagandistic, the emphasis on self-

reliance and a dynamic economy has non-the-less recurred in all the economic policies and

National Developments Plans in Nigeria since 1960 and therefore has to be viewed with a more

serious concern. One of the key determinants of a self-reliant and dynamic economy is the

relatedness and probably responsiveness of the educational system, in particular, high education to

developments in the manufacturing/industrial sector of the economy. It has been observed that the

rapid liberalization of the Nigerian economy which has introduced a wide variety of private

initiatives, without a corresponding liberalization of the educational system would in all probability

activate only the growth of the former thereby exacerbating the gap between education and

industry. This study problematizes the preceding observation, among others.

The main objective of this study is to investigate the adequacy or otherwise

of contemporary higher education vis-à-vis manpower development needs of manufacturing

industries. Other specific objectives of the research include how to determine the factors that

influenced the respondents (graduates and students) choice of higher institution of study (University

or Polytechnic), to ascertain the study (University or Polytechnic) conditions obtainable in the

respondents‘ institutions of study or graduation, to find out how the respondents obtained

their first employments (main employment for graduates and IT for students) as well as any

Tracer Study

considerations that motivated them to take up such employments, to determine whether or not the

respondents specific work assignments (for graduates) are related to their fields of study, to

investigate the usefulness or otherwise of both the theoretical and practical aspects of the

respondents‘ education to their job performance, to ascertain the employment, wage and

welfare structures of respondents in terms of the immediacy of sideline jobs, disposable income

and fringe benefits at work place, to access the respondents perceptions and attitudes towards their

occupational characteristics, career expectations, actualization and changes and to unravel the

coping capacity of respondents vis-a-vis their working conditions, experiences and employers.

This study is considered foremost a contribution to the evolution and growth of knowledge

on the linkage between higher education and work in Nigeria. It is a universal norm that higher

education is both an instrument as well as a means for the training of specialized manpower

appropriate for different vocational purposes. One area where the links between higher education

and manpower development have perhaps produced the most far-reaching benefits for mankind is

manufacturing. This is particularly evident in view of the profound skill sand creativity provided by

the linkage of education and industrial manufacturing and which frequently find expression in

scientific, technological and socio-economic development.

The changing nature of the work environment, the emergence of technology driven

processes, and the diversified needs of clientele are challenges to the ability of colleges and

universities to meet the demand for employable graduates. The role of the higher education sector is

to supply suitably skilled graduates to the workplace. However, de la Harpe, Radloff, and Wyber, in

a study conducted in 2000, suggest that there is worldwide concern that existing undergraduate

programs are not producing graduates of lifelong learning with the professional skills they need in

order to succeed. The issue of employability, as Homes (2001) says, “Will be a key quality

issue for many years to come”. If education is a form of a service industry then institutions of

higher learning are expected to move away from ‗mode 1‘ pure knowledge to‗mode 2‘

knowledge with greater concern for application and practices, along with more emphasis

on economic and social relevance. This current global shift shows the need to see how graduate

surveys can help measure the impact of higher education on graduate employment and in

establishing the nexus between higher education and the world of work, particularly for purposes of

defining a clearcut set of transferable and employability skills agenda inherent to the disciplines

offered in universities. He also, advocated the use of a graduate tracer study (GTS)   as an

appropriate tool in determining institutional capability in preparing graduates to meet the demands of

the workplace. The GTS involves the determination of graduates in the job search mode, lead time,

and employment conditions, where the knowledge acquired in schools are used at work, in

promotions, and job satisfaction.

The intent of Graduate Tracer Study (GTS) is to create an empirical portrait that describes

employment and employability aspects of the graduates of a comprehensive university in the

Philippines during the years 2001-2004 to identify policy imperatives for greater relevance of higher

education curricula to industry needs and expectations. The following research questions were

addressed by this research component: (1) which programs are most sought by employers? (2)

Which programs have the best potential for the highest initial earnings? (3)Which types of graduates

are most employable? (4) How long did it take graduates to find employment after college? (5) What

academic experiences/competencies from college did the graduates find most useful? (6) Which

factors could best determine employability from the personal and academic backgrounds of

graduates?

As the global concern for ascertaining graduate employability as an indicator of quality

education continues to grow the collective understanding should not be confused with the

ontological side of actual acquisition of a graduate job. The concern should be on the epistemological

dimension of the qualities and competencies acquired by the graduates and how these skills are used

and deployed in various contexts. The pivotal role of a graduate employability survey as a redirecting

tool cannot be underestimated in a developing country like the Philippines where the number of

higher education institutions vis-à-vis the number of students enrolled in university programs, and

where the issues of mismatch, under employment, and unemployment question the identity of

university education. Universities should ensure that graduates can “hit the ground running and

be capable of self-Direction”. Most of the graduates of the institution under study pursue

advanced studies and other work-related training. The seemingly impressive employability profile of

comprehensive university graduates (as evidenced by the assignment to middle level management

position particularly those representing the social behavioral sciences, natural sciences, medical

fields, engineering and technology and mass communication) is brought about not by academic

honors of the graduates. It is a result of how capabilities such as knowledge, skills, and attitudes are

used and deployed in the work place. The findings of this study have structural and procedural

implications. Structurally and procedurally, there is need to develop a more functional framework for

employability where the diversity of degree field offered in universities are linked to the diversity of

employment. Such framework may only be adapted in the context of transparency between and

among members of academe, graduates, and potential employers. Developing a functional and

responsive framework for employability is a question of good practice that according to Hill, et al

(2003): involves the identification of learning outcomes consistent with the skills needed by the

students and the employers, use of appropriate learning and teaching activities, design and use of a

well-planned mode of instructional delivery, judicious use of an appropriate assessment scheme of

desired skills and competencies for students, and a systemic use of a feedback mechanism rooted in a

sound evaluation and reflection processes. These stages are valuable in meeting the demands

of employers for graduates who are easily assimilated into employment situations that require

flexible and responsive people, who can solve problems, work in teams, and under pressure (Little,

2001). Presumably, these skills are found to be evident among the graduates of the institution under

study.

Through a constant dialogue with industry partners, universities are expected to ensure that

the curricular center piece operates in a setting of theory to practice orientation. A work-related

learning continuum can help facilitate the development of skills in realistic settings in demonstrating

the relevance of subject specific skills at the workplace, in providing useful career insights, in

enhancing employability, creating job prospects, appreciating undertaken tasks, and understanding

decisions made at the workplace. Learning experiences provided for student development should

emphasize the meaningful approach to learning through which where employable skills are

continually developed, deepened, and built up. The true test of student empowerment is the gradual

acquisition of control over educational skills and processes in post-graduation lives

The preliminary findings of their study have painted a portrait of the employment and

employability profile of a select group of graduates in a Philippine comprehensive university. It

should be noted that the involvement of a small number of respondents though covering a period of

four years, may not substantially describe the true picture of the phenomenon, considering the

number of graduates the respondent university has every year.

Combining the data yielded in this research segment with the national data can describe a

better picture of the phenomenon under study. The establishment of a dynamic Philippine database

on graduate employability will facilitate planning and decision-making at both national and

institutional levels and motivate future investigations for purposes of forecasting and human

resources planning. It is suggested that succeeding attempts to ascertain the graduate employability

profile should adopt a more aggregate sample, enough to represent a wide array of disciplines and at

the same time consider the inclusion of other outcome measures for a more panoramic

understanding of student employability in the context of a developing country like the Philippines.

2.1 Study of Education Graduates Employed in Ozamiz City Division

Abstract

[3]The study assessed the training, employability and accomplishments of 302

ICC/ ICC-La Salle La Salle University Education graduates employed in the Division of

Ozamiz City in School Year 2008-2009. The findings revealed that LSU graduates are

occupying more than half (53.74%) of the elementary teaching force in the Division of

Ozamiz City. Sixty eight percent of the respondents had teaching as their first job and

fifty nine percent of them were employed in less than a year period from graduation. The

respondents expressed satisfaction on the training they received from their Alma Mater in

the overall performance of their career. Further, the respondents find the teaching and

competency skills developed in them highly. Although only 21 have finished their

graduate studies, many have started with 9 to more than 45 units but have not completed

the requirements and about 45 have completed the academic requirements but have not

written or finished their thesis. Only a very few of the respondents have received regional

and national awards but a big number of them are holding administrative positions with

six division supervisors and the head of the division, the Division Superintendent herself

is an alumna of LSU. These findings are important in planning programs to improve the

Teacher Education Program at the same time give direction on what more can be done to

prepare our education students to meet the demands of teaching.

Introduction

The primary goal of teacher education programs is to produce good teachers who

are qualified to teach in the elementary and secondary schools. Feiman-Nemser, 2003 in

Casey and Childs (2007) noted that students enrolled in a teacher education program can

acquire subject matter knowledge, study the learning process, and grasp the rudiments of

approaches to planning, instruction and assessment. Graduates in teacher education

program are expected to have acquired teaching and competency skills during their pre-

service training to be better prepared for the teaching profession. These skills include:

lesson planning, preparation of instructional materials, use of a variety of methods, good

communication skills, skills in the use of information technology, problem-solving skills,

critical thinking skills, human relations skills and research skills.

There is therefore a need to make a follow-up study of the education graduates not

only to locate them but more importantly to find out how adequate is the training

provided by Immaculate Conception College now La Salle University in the overall

performance of their career life, the extent by which the teaching and competency skills

were developed, the employment status of the graduates as well as their achievements in

the field. Hopefully the results will be used to document outcomes related to becoming a

center of development in teacher education, to address the needs of the graduates to be

able to meet the demands of teaching, to continually improve program quality, and to

serve as baseline data for planning activities.

Methodology

The respondents of the study were the 302 graduates from La Salle University.

They comprise 53.74 percent of the total teaching force of 562 teachers who are actively

teaching in the elementary level of the four districts of Ozamiz City Division in School

Year 2008- 2009. Of the total respondents, 278 or 92.05 percent are female and 24 or

7.95 percent are male. Majority, 251 or 83.11 percent are married and 51 or 16.89 percent

are single. The descriptive method of research was used to uncover the profile of the

graduates as to their area of specialization, years of teaching experience, first job after

graduation and the length of time it took them to get their first job, position titles held,

graduate studies pursued and awards received. Likewise, the study tried to determine the

extent by which LSU developed the teaching and competency skills of the graduates and

the respondents’ ratings on the usefulness of the trainings received in the overall

performance of their career life.

Mean, frequency and percentage distribution was used to come up with the profile

of the respondents. Weighted mean was used to determine the extent by which the

teaching and competency skills of the graduates were developed and the ratings they gave

on the trainings received in the overall performance of their career life using a five point

scale. To determine the extent by which the teaching and competency skills of the

graduates were developed, the following range and interpretation are used:

To determine the usefulness of the trainings received in the overall performance

of their career life, the following equivalents are used:

Area of Specialization

The academic preparations of the respondents include the bachelor’s degree

elementary teachers of Ozamiz City Division, almost all, 300 ( 99.34% ) are Bachelor in

Elementary Education (BEED) graduates except for 2 ( .66% ) who are Bachelor of Arts

and Bachelor in Secondary Education with units in Elementary Education. The major or

The data revealed that majority (45.70%) are Filipino and English majors, a few

(11.92%) are Mathematics majors and only very few (6.62%) are Science and MAPE

majors. This means that Science which is one of the core subjects is handled by teachers

who are not majors in these learning areas. Monk, (1994 in Casey and Childs (2007)

found out that the high school students of teachers who had taken more university courses

in mathematics but were not mathematics majors and only very few (6.62%) are Science

and MAPE majors. This means that Science which is one of the core subjects is handled

by teachers who are not majors in these learning areas. Monk, (1994 in Casey and Childs

(2007) found out that the high school students of teachers who had taken more university

courses in mathematics but were not mathematics majors performed better on tests of

mathematics than students whose teachers had less mathematics content knowledge.

Similarly, students had higher science achievement if their teachers had taken more

science courses.

The practice of allowing teachers to teach outside of their area of specialization is

a reality in the public schools which is being addressed by CHED and DepEd through the

revision of the Teacher Education curriculum effective SY 2005-2006. The BEED

program is now a generalist with additional content courses in English, Science and

Mathematics. This is so because the BEED graduates although have their area of

specialization are made to teach all the subjects in the elementary levels especially in

self-contained classes. Only teachers in the higher grades and in big schools may be able

to teach their area of specialization when there is departmentalization.

Table 1 further presents the teaching force in the four districts of the Division of

Ozamiz. Coming from La Salle University. District 1 which comprises the Ozamiz City

Central School, Ozamiz City Central School –SPED Center, Baybay Elementary School,

Misamis Annex Elementary School and San Roque Primary School which are all found

in the heart of the city has the most number of LSU graduates. The total LSU graduates in

the elementary level of Ozamiz City Division is 53.74% while other schools which

contribute to the 46.26 % of the teaching force are Misamis University, State Colleges

and Universities and teachers from other private schools in the country.

Graduate Studies Pursued by the Respondents

Education is an on-going process. Change is the only permanent thing in

education and thus the need for further studies is a must in order to keep track with the

changing needs of the time. A further study is a gateway for raising the rank or

promotions in the service. The graduate studies pursued by the respondents are presented

in Table 5.

The data discloses that a big number, 174 (57.62%) have gained 9 to more than 45

units in their graduate studies but have not completed with the academic requirements.

This is a big challenge to the Graduate School of Education and Continuing Program to

assist these graduates to finish their graduate degrees including the 45 (14.90%) who

have completed their academic requirements but have not written or defended their

thesis. In the unstructured interview with the respondents, they give financial reason,

attending to their kids or giving priority to help other members of the family to be

educated as hindrance in finishing their graduate studies. Others mentioned their

difficulty in writing their thesis or their inability to do scientific research. This shows the

lack of skill in doing research. A seminar on research writing can be planned for this

group of graduates. In addition, research skill must be strongly integrated in the

undergraduate program for our graduates to be used to doing it.

Since there are still a number of graduates, 62 (20.53%) who have not started their

graduate studies they should be contacted and encouraged to start their graduate studies

in our school. It is alarming to find out that about two-thirds of the graduates pursued

their graduate at Medina College or Misamis University Graduate School instead of

enrolling in our own Graduate Programs. Based on my unstructured interview, I found

out that they find it convenient and economical to enrol in these schools because the fees

are affordable and there is lack of pressure on their part. Raising the tuition discounts of

alumni may be a big help to address the problem.

Findings, Conclusion and Recommendations

Findings

1. Forty six percent of the respondents are Filipino and English majors, yet they

are made to handle all learning areas including Mathematics and Science.

2. Eighty percent of the respondents are young and have been in the service for

five years and below.

3. Sixty eight percent of the respondents had teaching as their first job and fifty

nine percent of them were employed in less than a year period from graduation.

4. Seventy one percent of the respondents are in the Teacher 1 to 3 levels, seven

percent are Master Teachers 1 or 2 and a big number, and twenty percent are holding

administrative position as head teacher or principal. Six division supervisors and the

Division Superintendent herself is an alumna of LSU.

5. Fifty eight percent of the respondents have gained 9 to more than 45 units in

their graduate studies but have not completed with the academic requirements. Fifteen

percent have completed their academic requirements but have not written or defended

their thesis and twenty one percent who have not started their graduate studies.

6. Only seventeen percent of the respondents have received regional awards and

six percent for national awards.

7. The respondents rated very highly the following teaching and competency

skills; lesson planning, human relation skills, preparation of instructional materials,

communication skills and use of variety of methods. However, research and information

technology skills were only rated highly.

8. The respondents find the training they received from La Salle University

extremely useful.

Conclusion

The findings reveal that the respondents were satisfied with the Teacher

Education Program of La Salle University and affirmed that the training they received

were extremely useful in their field of work. That such training had built their confidence

and competence which made them employable in the field at the same time rise to

administrative positions. However, research and information and technology skills have

to be further developed and graduate studies must be pursued by graduates so that they

will be updated and continue learning.

Recommendations

1. The administration and faculty of the College of Education should take the

challenge of maintaining a very high degree of graduate satisfaction while keeping pace

with changing professional requirements. It must continue to develop graduates’

employability and enhance the attributes that make them employable.

2. The graduating students must be advised to continue their professional

development and lifelong learning.

3. Graduate School and Continuing Education should be made accessible and

affordable for our graduates. Graduates should be guided to be able to finish their

graduate program.

4. Research work should be required in all English and Professional Education

classes.

5. Seminars on the use of Information and Technology in the classroom should be

made available for our graduates during weekends or summer time.

6. Graduates must be reached and regularly informed on annual homecoming to

be updated on what’s going on in the University. At the same time annual gatherings

should be well-planned to encourage the alumni to return.

7. Continue to develop excellent communication skills in our students.

8. A similar follow-up study should be conducted by all colleges to locate its

graduates, to find out whether the training they received have helped them in their field of

work and to find out what else can be done to prepare our graduates in their respective

fields.

CHAPTER III- TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

CECST: ONLINE GRADUATE TRACER STUDY (CECST: OGTS) refers to

the automated system that contains essential information about graduates/alumni of the

college which they can post and update their career status through online. This system is

the only automated instrument between the alumni and school to track the alumni status

after they finish their Alma Matter in college. In order to track the alumni career status,

the alumni need to visit the website of the Surigao del Sur State University where the

webpage of the College of Engineering, Computer Studies & Technology (CECST) link

is located. The alumni need click the webpage of the CECST to see the online form

questionnaire posted, the questionnaire is exclusively only to the graduate or alumni of

the CECST.

The system generates the statistical report of employed/unemployed which can be

viewed as pie graph in the homepage based from the given answers of the respondents.

The administrator can update the activities in the system. It can post news about the

College, Memos, load the new Graduate names, update profile of the faculty and staff.

The administration can also verify the information of the respondent’s registration to the

system.

The visitors/guests of the system can view the pages and can even look into the

pie charts in which the employed or unemployed graduates’ populations of CECST were

shown.

CHAPTER IV – DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

The system was created by using several approaches or tools in collecting relevant

information necessary for system designing and development. Graduate Tracer Study

(GTS) questionnaire was one of the important tool used by the researchers in collecting

the necessary information and in determination of the graduate’s employability status.

Research Design

The design for software development starts with the collection of data and

information from the alumni through the years 2000-2010.

The collection of data and information was made through the GTS questionnaire.

At it is aimed to facilitate the employability status of the alumni of CECST through the

years 2000-2010.

Research Instrument

The researchers used descriptive research design in collecting the data and

information from its alumni. They conducted interview as well as on-site observation to

gather information regarding to their present status after they finished their studies.

The questionnaire is divided into three parts: general information/profile,

educational background, and the employment data. The general information/profile

contains name, present address, age, gender, civil status and birthday. The educational

background contains baccalaureate and vocational. And lastly the employment data

comprises the presently employed and present employment status. After the questions

have been answered, the researchers then asked the respondents for any suggestions to

improve the services in terms of courses offered, curriculum, faculty performance, and

facilities.

Data Gathering Procedure

Data gathering procedure started from designing or preparing questionnaire to be

used in the study.

First, the thesis instructor issued the letter of permission to conduct the study with

Graduate Tracer Study which was signed by the group representative, thesis instructor,

the college dean and also the approval of the said office.

Second, the researcher conducted a survey into different places of Tandag City to

locate the given addressed of the respondent, and there is the certificate of appearance

represented by the researchers to the Barangay’s office to prove that the researcher done a

survey in that particular place.

Third, the gathered data from the respondents was analyzed by showing a graph to

come up the employability status of the graduate if he or she was employed or

unemployed.

Forth, is the preparation of design of the system. The researchers would really

come up with the design, interfaces and important component of the system.

Finally, when the system is complete, it follows the installation of the software to

the CECST department.

Software Used

The researchers used the following programs/software in the automation of the

ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS5- is a graphics editing program developed and

published by Adobe Systems Incorporated. Adobe Photoshop CS5 is the 12th

major release of Adobe Photoshop. The CS rebranding also resulted in Adobe

offering numerous software packages containing multiple Adobe programs for a

reduced price. Adobe Photoshop is released in two editions: Adobe Photoshop,

and Adobe Photoshop Extended, with the Extended having extra 3D image

creation, motion graphics editing, and advanced image analysis features. Adobe

Photoshop Extended is included in all of Adobe's Creative Suite offerings except

CHAPTER V – RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

System Implementation and Testing

This chapter undertakes several phases in software development life cycle. It

discusses how the online system works in order that the users can interact with it.

Programming Consideration, Issues and Tools

The Online Graduate Tracer Study was developed using MYSQL Database, PHP

(Language), Apache Web Server, Dream Weaver CS5, Adobe Photoshop CS5 and CS3.

Researchers used a survey questionnaire categorized into three parts: general

information/profile, educational background, and the employment data. The general

information/profile contains name, present address, age, gender, civil status and birthday.

The educational background contains baccalaureate and vocational information. Lastly, the

employment data comprises the status whether employed or unemployed.

Back Up Performance

The database back-up files was made and located in the control panel that only the

system administrator can view. The process was to store all the current information

received by the database. Back-up is used to ensure file safety whenever the system fails.

Email Policy

The email policy is an important instrument to the system administrator. It is

because in registration procedure, email address is required before the user can proceed to

the next page. The alumni email addressed directly will be stored in the database for the

system administrator to easily send important information or any news from the college.

Programming Tools

The website was created through the use of Adobe Dreamweaver CS5, a

comprehensive Website authoring program for Windows and Mac from Adobe.

Dreamweaver is a sophisticated authoring package that is noted for many advanced

featues. For example, site designers can seamlessly move back and forth between visual

and HTML modes. Dreamweaver was originally developed by Macromedia, which was

acquired by Adobe in 2005.

Apache Web Server is generally recognized as the world's most popular Web

server (HTTP server). Originally designed for UNIX servers, the Apache Web server has

been ported to Windows and other network operating systems (NOS). The name

"Apache" was derived from the word "patchy" that the Apache developers used to

describe in the early versions of their software.

MYSQL Database- MySQL is a relational database system that is used to store

information. MySQL can store many types of data from something as tiny as a single

analysis features. Adobe Photoshop Extended is included in all of Adobe's Creative Suite

offerings except Design Standard, which includes the Adobe Photoshop edition.

Interface

Every pages of the system has its corresponding information. The hyperlinks,

buttons and navigation options are properly arranged.

The main page of the system is where the users and viewers can see all the

features. There were five (5) features of the site, Home, About CECST, Programs,

Alumni, Contact us.

Functionality

When a user logs-on using his/her account, the details are then automatically

added to the employability status database, which is very useful to the student population

summary graph.

Documentation

Researchers made first an actual survey to analyze the result and jot down all the

necessary information from the respondents necessary for developing and implementing

the system. Having a proper documentation in every phase of the system development,

the researchers identified how the system will work.

Resources

The site is made possible by the developer who has the knowledge in system

analysis and programming skills. The system administrator will be the one to maintain

and manage the system.

During the system development, the researchers handle the resources constraints,

like time and skills, as well as exerted much effort for expert consultation.

CHAPTER VI - CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Conclusions

CECST: Online Graduate Tracer Study is the Online Graduate Tracer Study of

College of Engineering, Computer Studies and Technology in Surigao del Sur State

University, main campus Tandag City. The purpose of this study was to track the

alumni’s present status after they finished their degree from the institution. The

researchers wanted to find out whether employed or unemployed. The system

automatically generates the employability population summary graph after each graduate

or an alumnus has filled up the survey questionnaire.

Recommendations

The researchers designed and developed the Online Graduate Tracer Study (GTS)

in CECST. Researchers of the system would like to recommend that the CECST: Online

Graduate Tracer Study will be used to easily keep track the graduates’ whereabouts. It is

also for the college to make any intervention program to those unemployed graduates.

The researchers would likewise recommend the website for any revision or update

that can be made by the next researchers for more efficiency and usefulness.
