That’s because most mums sold in the fall are not particularly hardy. For the last several years, we have been carrying a handful of mums that are truly hardy. They have been generally listed as Dendranthema, but the nomenclature seems to be chang- ing, and some sources have switched back to Chrysanthemum. These hardy mums bloom quite late, generally in late September at the earliest, but often starting to bloom in mid-October. It is wonderful to have a mum blooming so late, and have it last well into November, but most people want their mums to start blooming a little earlier than that. These hardy types all have a daisy type of mum flower. But now, we have a new group of hardy mums known as the Igloo Series. The Igloo mums have a 2” decorative flower that is less daisy-like, grow into a spherical or mounding habit, and start blooming in mid-September. There are five colors—yellow, bronze, white, red and purple, with names of ‘Sunny Igloo’, ‘Warm Igloo’, ‘Frosty Igloo’, ‘Rosy Igloo’, and ‘Cool Igloo’. They are hardy to 20 degrees below zero. We are looking forward to seeing the bloom on our first crop of Igloo Mums this fall. We have them in three sizes: $7.99 (a one- gallon pot with one plant), $14.99 (a two-gallon pot with three plants), and a monster mum (a three-gallon pot with four plants).
