GOEIE NUUSMy naam is Katherine, ek wil net ‘n hartlike dankgee aan Mama Rema en Prof Juma hulle het mygehelp om al my lewens probleme op te los.Ek het baie rond beweeg na verskillende doktersmaar sonder sukses.

Daar-na sal die verordening deur die Raad goedge-keur en gepromulgeer word.” Cronjé sê dieowerheid oorweeg dit om, in die tyd van diehersiening van die verordening, nie wetstoe-passing in terme van die verordening te doennie. “Indien die munisipaliteit so besluit saldaar wel wetstoepassing gedoen word op ad-vertensieborde wat lewens en bates bedreig.”

Petition for return of train serviceANNETTE THERON

After 1700 people had signed it, thepetition for the return of the passen-ger train service between SomersetWest and Caledon was handed to Do-nald Grant, provincial Minister ofTransport and Public works onMon-day 24 November. Mark Townsend,chair of the Bot River AestheticsCommittee (BRAC), handed over thepetition containing 72 pages toGrantat Elgin Station.

Townsend said that at ameeting of theBot River station precinct plan steeringcommitteeheldon5September lastyear,therewasawatershedmomentwhenDu-ma Goso of the Passenger Rail Agencyof SA (PRASA) had said: “Such a serviceis possible, but only if all residents along theline from Caledon to Somerset West get be-hind the initiative. There is no reason whythe Caledon passenger train should not re-turn.” Goso confirmed to the Gazette thatresidentsneeded topush forprojectsarising

from the Bot River Station Precinct Initia-tive to be included in the TheewaterskloofMunicipality’s Integrated DevelopmentPlan (IDP).Townsend said resident groups need to

maintain contact with PRASA, Transnet

Townsend says thatthe fact that national government iscurrently investing substantially in

rail is very encouraging, as it shows that thegovernment is serious about reducing theamount of traffic on the roads. Grant as-sured the BRAC representatives that hewould involve other role players to ensurethematterreceives theattentionitdeserves.

What does justice in SA cost?The Dewani case constitutes the latest andpossibly the most poignant reminder of howfar our legal systemhas “progressed” in imi-tation of its Anglo-American prototypes (IamnotreferringtoourAugustminingopera-tion of the same name, of course – they dodig up large amounts of valuable gold alongwith the dirt).The dismissal of the Dewani case became

predictable themomenthe retainedahugelyexpensive QC along with an image consult-ant.The subsequent two-yeardelay inhis ex-tradition to South Africa became a crucialtactic in his defence, as this allowed the wit-nesses to forget what they testified to before,making the final verdict inevitable; anothercase where money well spent has saved theday. It isdifficult tosayhowmuchthisstrate-gycostDewani,but Isuspect the figuremightprize a wry smile out of Oscar and Fred.Touching too, the solicitude of our judici-

ary for their efforts to dispel public percep-tions that justice (or probably more correct-ly, its deferral) can be bought, when eventssuch as these seem to suggest the opposite.With Christmas around the corner, the

public mood changes. Of course the key slo-gan is “joy”, which is a bit puzzling, as thenumberof suicides, roadaccidentsandothersocial ills tend to suggest a different prevail-ing sentiment. IknowbynowthatChristmasforces those of uswhomaintain amore tenu-ous modicum of sanity and contentment toconsider the fragility of our hold on these vi-tal commodities.But let’s not cavil – there is much to be

grateful for, such as the unexpected lightshowers breaking the heat just before theweekend. Unseasonal theymay be, but thereare plenty of grateful recipients under, onand above ground (myself included – unex-pected filling of rainwater tanks, a slight ele-vation of the mountain water table feedinga couple of my springs and some relief forthe underground fauna and flora).I am deeply privileged to be surrounded

by nature going about its daily business. Al-thoughoftenappearing tobe cruel andpoint-less, there is underlying honesty and beautyabout its workings that is greatly comfort-ing, and even more therapeutically, hum-bling. This morning the frogs are croaking,the birds are singing and every plant, eventhose equipped to deal with hot, dry sum-mers, seem a bit more pert and perky abouttheir green bits.Here’sa littlemoraldilemmaIhaverecent-

ly been dealing with: prime suspects in some ofmymore puzzling cases of burglary (e.g. no signsof forced entry) are workers on a neighbouringfarm.I have considered obtaining a search warrant

and launching an unexpected raid on their mod-est dwelling to find evidence, but if I do, this willput an immediate end to their alreadymarginal,fragile livelihood, which earns them R250 amonth from a 70-hour working week. In July this year a small groupof adults began training inShotokan karate in the newlyestablished Greyton Shoto-kan Karate Club under theguidance of the Caledon Shot-okan Club. On Tuesday 2 De-cember, all eight karate stu-dents graded to their yellowbelts. Ongelukkig het die weer niesaamgespeel en kon daar glad niegespeel word nie. Christeline deVilliers, takbestuurder van Cale-don, het toe besluit om die aandinteressant te maak en ’n gelukki-ge trekking is gehou deur name

vanaf die speelkaarte te trek. So-doende is die pryse wat aan wen-ners oorhandig sou word uitge-deel.

Spelers het daarna ’n heerlikeete geniet voorberei deur dievrouens van Absa.

Die Caledon-rolbalklub wilweereens Caledon Absa asook al-le deelnemers bedank vir hul on-dersteuning waarsonder die klubnie kan bestaan nie.
