Marni is Main character of this novel. She isRahayusMother. Marni is an illiterate Javanese

woman who still practices ancestor worship.

Through her offerings she finds her gods and

puts forth her hopes.

Rahayu is Marnis daughter, part of a new

generation shaped by education and an easier

life. She is a firm believer in God and in

common sense. She stands against the

ancestors, even against her own mother.

Marijo is A man who always help Ni by bought

her sugarcane, in other side sugarcane have abad quality than another one. He has a

company and the only company who still keeps

buying Nis sugarcane.Marijo has a feeling to

Ni.

is a hard worker and still believe in ancestor
