FACE-TO-FACE WITH GOD

Is it a shattering experience to be in God’s presence? Is a visionof God what man’s flesh and blood cannot bear? Or, is it ablissful experience?

It was the winter of the year 1952. I was then feeling terribleloneliness of the spirit. I often asked myself: “Am I alone in thewilderness of the self? Am I not forlorn in this helter-skelterworld? I feel myself a stranger here.”

My loneliness or sadness was not physical seclusion of a kind;nay, I had numerous friends, relatives and colleagues who lovedme, laughed with me and gave me company. But, in the space ofmy mind, I felt that I was not of the comingling crowd or thetumultuous multitude but of the solitude. I said to myself: “If Goddoes not have a voice, then life to me is meaningless and fruitless;it is a damp squib. If He does not appear unto me, then my spirit isweak. If He does not enter into my inner world, then life for me isa torso and my soul is a mere stump. It was in such a state of mindthat I came into contact with Brahma Kumaris Institution. Afterhaving my lessons in Rajyoga Meditation and in the relatedmetaphysics and in philosophy, correlated with practical life, I wentto Mount Abu, their headquarters, to have my first-ever experienceof Shiv Baba meeting human souls whom He called: “My long-lost children” through the human medium of Brahma Baba.

On the very first day of my visit, a startling moment occurred. Ihad been led by my Brahma Kumari teacher-sister into the roomwhere I was to meet Him. I squatted there face-to-face withBrahma Baba. Some others, who had come in our group fromDelhi, also sat around. There were some Brahma Kumaris andBrahma Kumars also there, imparting a great spiritual aroma tothe atmosphere. Suddenly, I felt myself cut off from myenvironment and detached from my body. I found myself in a seaof golden light. I experienced an indescribable thrill and aconsummating bliss. Strange torrential currents of peace haddescended on me and had penetrated into my mind and filled mysoul. In that state–as I can recall now–I had not even a slightfeeling of being an embodied spirit but I experienced the extremejoy of being face-to-face with God–the phrase ‘face-to-face’ beingonly metaphorical, because in that holy union or encounter, neitherof us had a physical face. Without God’s any physical arms, I felt

Q..: So you have gotgreat love for

learning.Ans.: Yes, my whole life hasbeen a constant learningcurve. After studying atUniversity of London, I wentback to Guyana and startedworking as an Engineer from1951. And, in 1962, I got thehighest engineering post thatGuyana could offer and whichI stayed with until 1970 whenI moved more to the politicalside of my career. In everyposition I was appointed to, Iused my engineering expertiseand training to support thework in that part icularministry. I was Minister to a

number of differentMinistries – Housing, Works,Communi-cations and CivilAviation. The President alsoappointed me to be in chargeof the social infrastructure ofthe country, which includededucation and transport.

My education neverstopped and my learningcontinues. Before mypolitical career I was granteda fellowship from the UnitedStates Program, whichbrought me to India in 1965and I spent about threemonths studying Public andBusiness Administration.Had I known about theBrahma Kumaris at that

time, I would have had thehonour of meeting BrahmaBaba face-to-face in person,“in sakar.” But this was notdestined in the drama! But Iam sure there must have beena subtle connection formedduring my stay in India in1965 that bore fruits in 1975!

I consider Raja Yoga as aneducation, not physical andmaterial education, butspiritual education. It is aneducation for life and itcontinues for a completelifetime. At 88, I am still astudent of Raja Yoga, astudent of life!Q.: Sister Betty Naraine, your wife, has also been

following this spiritual pathsince 1975. What was herrole and how did shecontribute to your progress?Ans.: Well, she has done a lotmore than I have done, as Ialways had a job to do, whileshe was a housewife and hada lot more time to dedicate toBaba’s service. While inGuyana and also in India, where we lived for six years, she spent quality time with theSisters, constantly inconversation about the deepmeaning of knowledge and itsapplication, as well as aboutthe Yagya and its early days. Her conversations with thesisters, became the basis forour conversations at home, asshe would share with me allthe new aspects she came toknow of. She also travelledwith the sisters to Trinidad,Barbados, and Surinam, as sheloved “doing service.” Beingin the position of wife of aMinister, it was easy for herto access people in the samepositions.

She helped in establishingBaba’s Centres wherever shewas–whether in Guyana, orToronto, or New Delhi. Shewas and remains very close toall the sisters and seniors andin this way she alwaysencouraged the family by

moving us towards Baba’sside. Of course Baba saw thisclearly, and at one of thepersonal meetings we werehaving with Him, I think in thevery first meeting we, bothwere having with Him, Babasaid to her: “You are the one Iwant because you have agreat role to play.”

In this divine family, shecontinues to play a specialrole. Of course she alsoencourages our children,grand-children, and greatgrand-children to be close toBaba. My two sons are bothmarried, but they always havegreat love for Baba and theseniors. At the beginning, before their marriage, theyused to come and visitMadhuban and felt anenormous closeness to DadiPrakashmani. My entirefamily would come to meetBaba from time to time. Oursons and their children arevery close to the divine familyand they are very supportive. My eldest daughter, Savi gotmarried before we came tothis Gyan. She now lives inToronto and is very active inBaba’s service there. SisterGayatri is fully surrendered, and she is with Sister Mohiniin New York. Gayatri wenton a visit to New York and she

never came back to Guyanafor many years. She helps tosupport Baba’s work at theUnited Nations. The centre inNew York was establishedwhen my other daughter, Sita, went on a scholarship to studycommunication systems atPACE University inManhattan. Together withSister Mohini, they startedBaba’s service in New Yorkfrom an apartment in Astoria,Queens. Dadi Janki visitedthem for a few days andplaced her footsteps in thatspace. And from that littleroom, service in New York hasnow grown into 300 acres ofland that is called PeaceVillage Learning and RetreatCenter, where ongoingdevelopment is taking place.

So, all my children arecooperative in Baba’s serviceat some level. We are verypleased with the spiritualdirection the entire family haschosen. We have sixgrandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and they allknow Shiv Baba and BrahmaBaba. They know theknowledge, and have greatlove and respect for the BKfamily, particularly for theDadis and the seniors. Bapdada, the Dadis, and theseniors are aware of their

love, and in return have greatlove for them. I consider thisto be a great blessing! And ithas all taken place with AuntyBetty’s constantencouragement.Q.: You have been veryfortunate to be in very closecontact with Dadis. Pleasetell us something aboutthose special days and howthe Dadis bestowed theirlove on you.Ans.: In March 1976 afterthe center was established inGuyana, the first Dadi whovisited was Dadi Gulzar. Andthen in August 1976, my familyand I came to India and metwith Dadi Praksahmani, DidiManmohini, and the otherDadis. And on our way backfrom India to Guyana, westopped over in London andmet with Dadi Janki. So forus 1976 was the “year of theDadis.”

Living in Delhi from 1983gave me the opportunity tocome close to the Dadis andto get to know them better. InDelhi, we were able to meetand interact with Dadi Gulzarvery often, and so becamevery close to her. What I likemost about her is that she isalways smiling. Her presenceis quiet, even silent. She doesnot speak much, yet she is

always a source of spiritualenlightenment.

Dadi Prakashmani had apersonality of exuberance andof course everybody liked herbecause of this spiritualvitality. Whenever I was inPandav Bhawan, I would sitin the courtyard next to hermeeting room and observewhat was going on. I sawgroups of sisters going in tosee her, many times withserious faces. And whenthey came out after meetingDadiji, they were all smilingand happy. Dadiji was able togenerate happiness in people, leaving them with a feeling ofworthiness.

Dadi Janki is the forcebehind service in foreigncountries. Things started tomove when she decided tomake London her base forworld service. She is a pillarof strength and support to me,and she showed up personallyto visit me at my bedsideduring both my open-heartsurgeries, the first time inLondon, and the second timein San Francisco. Even now,at 96, she continues to travelfor the sake of service and sheis only able to do this becauseshe has both physical andspiritual energy that is reallyunlimited. I greatly admire her

for her words of wisdom, andI have very high regard for herresilience and humility. Everyday she meets manysouls, and shares somethingabout Baba’s inspirations. Sheis truly like a lighthouse.

The Dadis form the threadof love that holds all the beadsof the Brahmin familytogether. Love is expressedin the way they live. TheDadis give value to each task.

Obstacles may arise, however they step into theirinner silence to find solutions.Their courage, determinationand enthusiasm become thedriving force to accomplishevery task in a timely manner. They see everything as aGodly mission and they, theinstruments, are helpers in theprocess of worldtransformation. Their viewsare so well respected thatwhen shared, they are treatedas blessings in motivatingothers in the fulfillment of anytask.

There is no greater leaderthan she who organizesmaterial and spiritualresources to fulfill any Godlymission and in return receivesHis blessing – this is thegreatest reward of all.

LET’S BURN THELET’S BURN THELET’S BURN THELET’S BURN THELET’S BURN THEREAL RAREAL RAREAL RAREAL RAREAL RAVVVVVANANANANANAAAAA

In today’s life, full of chaos, tension and turmoil, festivalsbring a new joy, zeal,

enthusiasm, mutual love andcordiality in our lives. However,in the absence of trueknowledge, we can’t understandthe real message behind thefestivals and just keepcelebrating them by observingrituals. It is only through the realknowledge revealed byIncorporeal God Shiva throughthe corporeal medium ofPrajapita Brahma in the presentauspicious Confluence Age, thatthe darkness of ignorancedisappears and we are able tolive our lives in a virtuous andvalue-based manner.

The festival of Dusshera, alsoknown as Vijay Dashmi , isenthusiastically celebrated everyyear on the 10th day of Asvinamonth of the Hindu calendar, allover India. It symbolizes thevictory of good over evil andtruth over falsehood. Dussehramarks the beginning of thefestive season, extending up totwenty days till Diwali, which isanother largely celebratedfestival. Dussehra is celebrated

by burning the effigies of theten-headed devil Ravana, whowas believed to be the King ofLanka.

As per great Hinduscripture Ramayana, it is saidthat Ravana, who, despitebeing a very ardent devotee ofGod Shiva, had abductedRama’s wife Sita, mainlybecause of his ego and vice ofsex-lust. Later, Rama with thehelp of an army of monkeys(Vanar Sena), fought a warwith Ravana and killed him.

According to Godly

knowledge revealed by GodShiva, the legends mostly bearsymbolic significance, relatingto the present Confluence Age.Otherwise, it is impossible forany human being to have tenheads. The mystery behind thesame aspect is very clearlyexplained by Him that in thepresent Kaliyuga, all humanbeings are inflicted by Ravana,i.e., five vices (Sex-Lust,Anger, Greed, Attachment andEgo). That is why Ravana isshown to have ten heads, i.e.,symbols of five vices each inmen and women. In Sanskritalso, Dussehra means takingaway of ten vices. Thus,Ravana is more of a symbol ofthese vices rather than ahistorical figure.

Dussehra symbolizes theburning of these vices fromtheir root, which is possibleonly when we, the souls whohave become vicious and sinfulbecause of body-consciousness, birth after birthsince Dwapur Yuga andbecause of ignorance of trueknowledge, are enlightened byAlmighty God Shiva with thesevery aspects. Incorporeal Godis also known as Ram, who isdifferent from Shri Ram ofRamayana fame. However, inignorance of the true identityof God, we have called Himomnipresent, and thus, abusedHim, because by calling Him

Page 10: the world renewal oct 2012

11The World Renewal, October 2012

omnipresent we have assumedthat He is present in all thecreatures, such as animals, birds, insects etc. In fact, GodShiva is bestowing on us thereal Gita Knowledge. ThroughHis Gyan Murli, i.e., the fluteof knowledge, He gives us themost elevated Shirmat,i.e.,Godly advice. He tells usvarious codes of conducts, which we must abide by at allcosts. However, if we crossthis ‘Line of Control’, which isreferred to as ‘LakshmanRekha’ in Ramayana, wesouls, who are Ram’s trueSitas, are put in the cage ofRavana or vices, which isreferred to as Shoka Vatika. Thus, the mention of Sita beingdetained by Ravana is also thesymbolic reference of the factthat in this old vicious world allsouls are influenced byRavana. Seeing us in such adistressed and impure state,God Shiva reincarnates, bestows on us His mostelevated Godly knowledge and, thus, liberates us from ShokaVatika of Ravana and takes usto the Ashoka Vatika, i.e.Golden Age for 21 births.

The ever-increasinginfluence of these deeplyrooted five vices and theirprogeny such as jealousy, cunningness, laziness, carelessness etc. can be

evidenced from the increasingsize of effigies of Ravanawhich are burnt every year. This proves that despiteburning Ravana’s effigiesevery year, we have failed toburn the real Ravana. This isevidenced by innumerablenuclear weapons and missileswhich have been invented byvarious nations to destroy theenemy countries. According toGodly knowledge, nuclearwars, natural calamities andcivil wars become instrumentalin the great transformation ofthe old, vicious, dirty Kaliyugiworld.

And, in order to give us ourbirthright of liberation andfruition, He takes the help of uschildren, who before receivingthis Godly knowledge were sovicious and sinful like monkeys.Monkey is such an animal whopossesses all the five vices atextreme, more than any othercreature. The same fact hasbeen mentioned apparently inRamayana that in order to killRavana, Rama had taken thehelp of an army of monkeys.

We must introspect and tryto find out the reason whydespite celebrating thesefestivals year after year, wehaven’t become viceless orpure? Why even after readingthese sacred scriptures anumber of times, our minds and

intellects are still polluted andwe keep on doing misdeedsday after day. Let’s understandthat God has given us theslogan, “World Transformationthrough Self Transformation.”God also says that charitybegins at home. If I want tochange the world, I need tochange myself first.

In view of the signals fromthe pathetic conditions of theworld including nature, peopleetc., it can be inferred thatdestruction is round the corner. So, very less time has been leftbefore we make our finaljourney to our Sweet SilenceHome, i.e., Incorporeal World, for which we must all need toput in our best efforts to burnour past sins and misdeedsthrough God’s loving andpowerful remembrance andthus become viceless and pure.

But this destruction will befollowed by the establishment ofnew world – Golden Age orParadise, where everything willbe pure and fresh. So, in orderto be part of the new civilization, let’s pledge on this Dussehra, toforge all relationships with Godand burn the vicious Ravanafrom our mind and intellectcompletely, and thus, becomeentitled to our God Fatherlybirthright of Golden Age for 21births. This will be celebratingDusshera in the real sense.

Just as there is the mother, the father and the childrenin a family, so are the

queen, the king and the subjectsin a country, living like anextended family. The institutionof kingship is as old as thehuman civilisation itself. Thefirst ever queen and the king onthis earth were Shri Lakshmiand Shri Narain and theirdynasty, followed by the rule of

Shri Ram and Shri Sita andtheir dynasty. They were thedeity kings and queens whoruled over Bharat and theentire world for a period of2500 years. Their reigns weremarked by hundred percentpurity, peace and prosperity. The era of Lakshmi-Narayandynasty for 1250 years isknown as the golden period ofBharat and that of Sita-Ram

dynasty, for the next1250 years, the silverperiod. The combinedperiod of those twoeras was that veryheaven which is stillremembered inreligious fables asparadise, Vaikunth,Jannat etc. Thosedeity kings and queensand their subjects areworshipped in Indiaeven today as gods andgoddesses or, in otherwords, as devis anddevtas.

During Satyuga andTretayuga, bothpolitical and religiousauthority vested in the

same person, i.e., the King, astheir kingdoms wereestablished by none other thanGod Himself. When and howthese kingdoms wereestablished, is quite a storywhich every individual, whoconsiders himself or herself asan actor in the world drama, must know. But before weanswer these questions, wemust know how we reachedthe present sad state of affairsin the world in general and inour country, i.e., Bharat orIndia, in particular.

As the time passed on, therule of the deity kings and thedeity queens, like all other goodthings in life, came to an end.The heaven became a matterof the past and what followedwas the separation of the stateauthority from the religiousauthority and, consequently, apower struggle between them. These events have beenrecorded in the medievalhistory of Europe and Englandas the conflict between thechurch and the monarchs.Though the kings stillrespected the wisdom andspiritual authority of theChurch, they wanted to ruletheir people on their own. Theyhad become independentenough to think for themselvesand so wanted to rule theirsubjects under the guidance butnot under the command of the

Church. As physical andmaterial power was on the sideof the monarchs, they had theupper hand in this powerstruggle.

Around this time, the idea ofthe Divine Right of Kingsevolved in Europe. This theoryclaimed that kings wereanswerable only to God and itwas, therefore, sinful for theirsubjects to resist them. Thetheory was supported by theChurch authorities, who arguedthat the king had beenappointed by God and thepeople who disagreed with him, were not true Christians.

As the kings had absolutepower, they became debasedand ruthless and instead ofacting as guardians of theirsubjects, gave themselves tocarnal pleasures. They turnedinto tyrants and took to robbingtheir subjects of their wealthand property leading this timeto conflict between the kingand the people. History tells usthat it were the people whoultimately became victoriousand thus was laid thefoundation of the democracyof the present day – the oustingof the kings and ushering in therule of the people, by thepeople and for the people. Theadvent of democracy marksthe transition from the medievaltimes to the modern times.

Though the concept ofdemocracy was not new toIndia – the Panchayat systemin Indian villages is very old one– yet the democratic form ofgovernment we got, was verylate in the day and that too, after centuries of subjugationunder Muslim kings and thenthe British monarchs. Thoughdemocracy may havesucceeded elsewhere, it seemsto have met not with greatsuccess in our country. Withabout 90% of illiteracy andpoverty at the time ofindependence, we were notquite the material for theparliamentary type ofdemocracy with adultfranchise, patterned on theBritish design – the design ofour erstwhile masters.

Mahatma Gandhi haddreamt of Ram Rajya but, instead, what we have today isRavan Rajya. Corruption isrampant in every field of life. What happens when thegovernors and the governedboth become corrupt? Itgenerates more corruption andthus we see a vicious cycle ofcorruption setting in, makingcorruption a norm of life ratherthan an exception. When law-makers turn into law-breakers,you can very well imaginewhat the condition of the peoplewould be, particularly of the

law-abiding citizens. It is true that the rot that has

set in, is not entirely due to thedemocratic form ofgovernment we have; thegeneral character of thepeople, not only in our country, but in the world as a whole, hasplummeted down. The world isin turmoil. Moral values havetaken quite a beating. Thevices of lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego have takenfull control of the human mind. Not that, what we see today,is the fault of anyone; the scriptof the world drama is such thatthese things, even worse, areto happen before fall of thecurtain.

However, when we churnthe milk of our thoughts, we findthat democracy as a form ofgovernment has been a non-success in our country forthree main reasons. One, weare not honest with our ownself, not to speak of beinghonest with our fellow beings. There is an ocean of differencebetween what we preach andwhat we practise. The secondis that we are so muchenamoured with the good thingsin life, that we hardly visualise, not to speak of realising, theoutcome of whatever we do toprocure them. And, the third isthat we do not, rather cannot, think for our own self. Our

society is divided into castes,sub-castes, communities, sections and various groupsbased on religion, region, business interests, languageetc., so much so that we keepon focusing on those thingswhich separate us rather thanthose which link us. Ourelections, which are a sine quanon for the success ofdemocracy, are fought not onthe basis of individual merits buton affiliations with groups andpolitical compulsions of thosewho aspire to become ourrepresentatives.

The world historians, weknow it today, cover threeperiods – the ancient period, the medieval period and themodern period. Starting from asearly as 500 B.C., these threeeras have now a span of over2500 years. Their history, asrecorded by the contemporarywriters, is nothing but anaccount of events like wars, invasions, territorial disputes, revolutions, civil wars, famines, earthquakes, pestilence andother natural disasters etc.

However, we tend toforget that there must alsobe a history before 500B.C., prior to the threehistories mentioned above. We often dismiss it as thepre-historic. What about it?Is there no recorded history

of that period? What wepresently know about thosetimes is the result ofresearch by man. Are we tobelieve that during the pre-historic times the man leda savage or semi-savagelife, that he treated thewomen folk as mere slavesand that he hunted for foodand moved from place toplace in search of food andwater? Some historians callthis period the Stone Agewhen the man lived in cavesand used weapons made ofstone for hunting animals, for doing his householdchores or just for fightingagainst the enemy.

If we give credence to whatthe researchers say about theman in the pre-historic stage, then the deity kings and queensof the past and their subjectswould sound only as myths. But numerous temples raisedin India to perpetuate theirmemory and to worship themas divine beings, are an ampleproof of the fact that they oncelived in Bharat in flesh andblood – at some or the otherpoint of time in the history ofmankind. The question is:When? At what time?

The Hindus believe that thedeity kings and queens livedlakhs of years ago and that thepresent period of misery and

sorrow will continue forthousands of years more. Atthe same time, there is a beliefamongst us, that the civilisationof our country is 5000-yearsold. I will go along with thelatter view as it seems morelogical. We know the historyof 2500 years or so from 500B.C. to the present day, whichis only a record of violentchanges and natural or man-made disasters of far-reachingeffects. It can be assumedsafely that the deity kings andqueens ruled for the first 2500years of the Indian civilizationprior to 500 B.C.– 1250 yearsof the rule of Lakshmi-Narayan and 1250 years of therule of Sita-Ram.

There was peace and plentyin those times, people lived inharmony and there were nodivisions in the society on thebasis of caste, religion orwealth. The women held veryhigh and respected status in thesociety. There were nohospitals, police stations, lawyers, judges, courts or jailsas there was no disease, disorder or crime during thatperiod. The deity kings andqueens were the masters of theearth and the elements. Theyruled over all the continents, oceans and the skies. Thatworld is still remembered by theHindus as the immortal world.

Page 14: the world renewal oct 2012

15The World Renewal, October 2012

Not that the people there did not die butthey all lived up to the ripe age of morethan 100 years as there was no untimelyor accidental death.

It is no surprise that no written recordsof those times exist. The reason is simplebecause there was nothing for the peopleto write home about. But history, as theysay, repeats itself. It is not a mere clichébut an indisputable truth. All things movein cycles. Day must come after night;spring must follow winter. So the age ofthe deity kings and queens or the RamRajya of Mahatma Gandhi’s dreams is sureto follow the present hellish world. But itis not within the powers of any individual, any government or any inter-ationalorganisation to do so. The conditions ofthe present day world have come to sucha pass that only God can deliver the manfrom his present misery and sorrow. Thisis the promise made by Him in the Gita, which He fulfils by re-establishing thekingdom of the deity kings and queens –the kingdom of Heaven – upon the earth.

It were really the deity kings and queensof Bharat who had the divine right to rule– not only over Bharat but over the entireworld, unlike the medieval kings whoclaimed that right through struggle andviolence. The good news is that God hasalready descended upon the earth and isengaged in giving back to His righteous –and rightful – children the lost kingdom ofHeaven. We shall soon see the Heavenre-established upon the earth as the periodof the 5000 years of Bharat’s civilisationis drawing to a close and a new chapterof history is set to commence again.

The purpose of life can besummed up in twowords: Expression and

Experience. Everything we do,we do to express a particularquality from within the soul andat the same time we continue toexperience various qualities ofthe Universe through people andnature.

This is perhaps more obviouswhen we take time out to go onholidays. When our solepurpose is to just sit… relax…and… soak in the sights andsounds from our chosen traveldestination. As our time thereis limited and we are exposed tonew cultures and ways, we maytake the courage to try out newthings too – adding to our bankof experiences.

The very nature of the soul isto express – it is like breath, life, for the soul. In fact, this is thereason the soul enters andinhabits a body. Without a body, the soul cannot ‘feel’. As thesoul communicates through abody, it is illustrating its ownqualities. The output of anythingcan only be what has been the

input! Thus, we oftencomment that the face is themirror or the index of the mind,or that our actions speakvolumes (of the mind!).

The soul can be likened to apuppeteer and the body itspuppet. How the puppeteerhandles the puppet will dependon his/her puppet managementskills! In the same vein, thesoul is known as the raja, theking, and the body – with its fivesenses of sensation andperception–its kingdom. Howwell do I, the king, manage mykingdom on a daily basis? Ordo the senses manage me:telling me to eat another sliceof the cream cake, or to listento the gossip a little whilelonger, or to continue watchingthe horror movie, knowing toowell that it will hound me in mydreams later!

There is no machine assophisticated and complex asthe human body and no operatoras ingenious as the soul. Thesoul is the spark, the fuel, theenergy, which ignites the body. Without this light the body is a

corpse. Since all the essentialorgans are intact — the brain, the heart etc. — this could onlymean one thing and that is… thelife force, the breath has left, gone, finito, khalas!

Some senses execute certainthoughts whilst others absorbthoughts tossed over by theuniverse (and some do both!). For example, the eyes can givea look that can kill or a look thatsparks a romance. If the eyesare erased in someone’s picture,it’s hard to even identify theperson. The eyes are thewindows to the world. Withoutsight we lose one fifth of ourconnection with the world. Inthe same way, the mouth cangive hope to someone througha few kind words, or it candestroy relationships for alifetime! Noses normally wantsomething “fragrant” orpleasant to smell or else we‘turn up our noses’! And thesense of touch should be allabout love and care, not abuseand cruelty.

So, since we know ourpurpose here is to express andexperience, then let us expressand experience the highest, thebest and most divine. We havethe power to choose what wetake in and what we emit. Thesenses simply implement themessages we pass over to them.

As “couch potatoes”, wemay sit and surface many

thoughts such as aspiring to climb MountEverest; charting a world tour; or trying toconceive brilliant entrepreneurial ideassimilar to the likes of Starbucks orFacebook! But it is those who get off thecouch and do something that makes adifference in the world. Sitting and thinkingis not enough; I have to express into actionmy passion, my power, my zest, mydetermination, my motivation, my visionand then I am getting closer to achievingmy goal.

Just as spring brings out the best innature, so too there comes a season, a time, when we all need to express, to blossomand bring out our best – we won’t be happyor at peace till we have. And just as thedry, barren tree surprises us with tiny, freshnew leaves, so too life surprises us withwhat we have within us. There is a sayingthat there is a saint in every sinner and asinner in every saint. It just depends onwhom you feed the most that will grow!

And as we live and experience life andtake in like a sponge, let us begin to filterwhat we absorb. We are not a garbagecan that everyone can just throw their loadinto. It’s totally up to me which eye glassesto wear and which perspective to take onand which to discard.

It’s time… to get off that couch and dosomething great today. Express your bestand experience the highest that life isoffering you. Wear the right eye-glassesand you will indeed see that your glass iscertainly more than half full. Take chargeof your puppet, and if that slice of cakestill pulls you, tell it to go and take a hike! After all you are in command – you arethe puppeteer!

DOUBLE DOCTORS –CALL OF TIME

Very few of us are luckyenough not to passthrough any unpleasant

situations in their present life. Why do such unpleasantsituations arise? Why do wesuffer? How can we get rid ofthe pain we create? When I wasyoung, these were the questions, which often came to my mind. These questions kept hauntingme. I used to go for a strollaround the countryside, oftensat with the local Chaiwala(tea maker), not to drink tea,but to be a silent observer, trying to find answers to myquestions: ‘what has gonewrong with my fel lowcitizens? Why do we have allthis grief?

I spent days in Haridwarand Rishikesh, walked alongthe banks of the Ganges, metmany persons, read books onrealization and yoga, in searchof these answers. I foundsome solutions in ShrimadBhagwad Gita and writings ofOsho; I was delighted by theknowledge in Upanishads. But, my search continued asmy brothers and sisters were

still suffering. And, theunfortunate thing is that mostof them even don’t know thatthere can be a better option. They think happiness andsorrow are two sides of thesame coin and are part oflife, given by God.

I was regular in writingletters to ‘my’ God, though Iwas not sure, at that time,Who He was. I consideredGod as my Creator and oneof my best friends and wellwishers with whom I couldshare everything. In myletters, I often repeated myquestions to Him. I evenprayed God to give all thosesufferings to me and relievemy co-brothers and sisters.I never prayed for anythingpersonal. My one-line prayerwas ‘loka samasta sukhinobhavantu’. Later, I foundthe glimpse of God’s wisdomat Brahma Kumaris WorldSpiri tual Universi ty, aspiritual organization withglobal following, and theirteachings of Rajyoga. TheOcean of Knowledge pouredHis knowledge on me. My

third eye got opened and Icame to know the reasons, the root causes of thesufferings and His divineplans to eliminate them. Thanks to our beloved Father, the Merciful Lord.

Observance of silence andpurity changed my life itself.I t gave me a chance torealize the power of silencethrough my own experiences.I looked within, in the depthof the self for the uniquesolutions. Purity in words andactions gave me moreresi l ience power. Thisenabled me to handlesituations more wisely, andwith less anxiety; my introvertnature started vanishing day-by-day. So, though faced withenough problems andsituations, I felt less affectedby them.

Godly studies at BrahmaKumaris World SpiritualUniversity gave me moreinsight to my understanding ofHolistic Health Care afterfinding that most of thelifestyle diseases have theirroots in the patient’s way ofthinking and their personalitytraits. Though the doctors findit easier to treat them withmedicines, diet ing andphysical exercises. Theyknowingly or unknowinglyavoid the being–the mind. Weare also aware that 30% of

our OPD patients need onlycounselling but we are soused to the bodily approachthat we find it difficult tochange. Most of us find mind-body-medicine approach easyto preach than practise.

From my clinicalexperience, it was clear to methat there is a complexinterplay between thephysical response to problemsof human body and the humanmind. It is an acceptable factthat most of the back pains, which are being treated foryears and not being cured, arevery much connected withthe mental state of the patient.Assessment of the patient’spersonality, past and present, and of any stressful events isdone through psychologicaltherapy, such as, behaviouralmodification techniques, exploration and adjustment ofthe patient’s socialrelationships with his family, friends, and work.

Let me give you anexample here. Once, when Ihad lectured on healthylifestyle, in a North Indian city,a mother came to me. Shewas suffering from back pain. She had enough trial with allthe systems of medicine. Iasked her: “For how longhave you been suffering.”‘Eight years’ , was the

answer. “Do you recall anyspecif ic incident thathappened in your life eightyears ago”? – I enquired. Asudden cry was the answer.Later, she told me that shehad lost her only son, eightyears ago. And, she was stillgrief-stricken.

There is another interestingcase of a 20-year old girl. She had been suffering fromnausea and vomiting for twoyears. All the treatments shegot relieved her symptomstemporarily. On analysis, itwas found that her problemsstarted two years back whenher father came up with amarriage proposal for her.And every t ime a newproposal came, her symptomsaggravated. It was strangethat nobody ever noticed it. Ihad a long discussion with thegirl and found out that shewas under the delusion that aneighbourhood boy was inlove with her. She believedthat he was willing to marryher and his parents wereagainst the affair, yet, shewas not having the will-powerto express her feelings eitherto the boy or her familymembers. And there startedthe suffering.

Once a young man of 32years was brought to me byone of his friends, with

insomnia and behaviouralproblems; he had not slepteither at night or day for thepast 2 weeks. I sat with himfor half an hour, trying to getmore facts from him. Oncehe was relieved, I took himto the room in my clinicwhere we read Godlyknowledge and pract iseRajyoga meditation. I told himto take rest by lying on thecushioned floor keeping hiseyes closed for 10 minutes.Believe me he sleptcontinuously for 5 hours, under the shower of peacefrom the Ocean of Peace.

I also got an opportunity totry Rajyoga lifestyle on panic-stricken patients after theGujarat earthquake and theTsunami in our southerncoasts. And, it did all thewonders. The knowledge, theunderstanding and therealization made the realdifference. I t ’s al l ourperceptions that make orbreak us. In all the cases, inaddition to medicines for theirpresent physical condition, they had realized the cause oftheir sufferings and themeans to get rid of it throughGodly knowledge along withthe practice of Rajyoga.

We all have a basic instinctto safeguard ourselves frominfluences of people and

Page 19: the world renewal oct 2012

situations but are ignorant orunaware of the enemy inside.Sometimes we may bedwell ing on the past ,recollecting all the sorrows somuch that we forget to attendto opportunities knocking atour door. All these thoughtsof the past, drain our innerenergy. Once, we are awareof this fact, getting out of thisloop is easier. Rajyogalifestyle teaches us togenerate positive, powerfuland purposeful thoughts basedon reality. With a conscious, determined effort, we canchange our perceptions.

As said in Gita, ‘We areour own friends and our ownfoes.’ When we realize theunlimited subtle powers withinus, our external search ends. Our dependence on people, places and objects ends. Nomore addict ion orattachment. The ignorant lotbecome biased andprejudiced against those whocontradict them and in thatprocess they lose the touchwith their own internal truthand are deprived of theirfreedom and joy. By beinghonest to our own self ,mastering the art of using ourown inner powers becomeseasy. Through God’steachings, we can make theimpossible possible. Souls

stranded at the slightestprovocation till the other day, transform into – real gold, flexible yet valuable. Theyrealize that they are thechildren of the OneBenevolent Father, and theOne who does welfare to all.Understanding of theresponsibility makes a realdifference in their response topeople and situations.

The relationship betweenpain and the mind is complexand must always beconsidered carefully by thosewho provide medical care. The holist ic treatment, therefore, should be acombination of physicaltreatment with drugs alongwith regular practice ofmeditation to lessen anxietyand control depression andmethods to uplift the positiveside of their personality. Inmost of the cases, the doctor-patient relationship is very, very important. The doctorhas to play not only the roleof a healer but also that of awell-wisher and in manycases a benefactor. He hasto spend real quality time withthe patient. The presentsystem of diagnosis beingdone at the laboratories based

on some physical factors hasto give way to an integratedapproach where not only thephysical aspects but also theperson’s sufferings will betaken care of with the help ofa trained psychiatrist or a‘double’ doctor (a doctorpractising Rajyoga Lifestyle).

Integration of spiritualityinto our healthcare system isthe need of the hour and it ishigh time we impart this greatwisdom to our youngergeneration by making it a partof our medical curriculum.Spiritual awakening is thebasis of a value-based,healthy society. The earlierwe realize, the better it is.Doctors are considered nextto God. Our fellow beings andthe Supreme Being arelooking towards us for achange. We are duty-boundto revolutionize the presentsystem of treatment to amore meaningful, holisticsystem. We have to be thechange we want to see in thisworld. God, the SupremeSurgeon, will be happy to seeus helping Him inpermanently eradicating thesufferings from the world andrecreating a healthy, wealthyand prosperous society.

Truth, peace and non-violence all requirepractice and strength.

One cannot be passive; thesevirtues need to be alive in us.When Mahatama Gandhi saysthey are as old as hills, he meansto say they are not somethingnew; they have passed on fromgeneration to generation. Allreligions, all religious leadershave been teaching the same.Non-violence is the moderninstrument for spiritual progressand personal transformation.Non-violence needs practice; itneeds to be cultivated, to beunderstood. One needs love andcompassion even in the face ofconflict. War- peace, hate- love,lies- truth, violence-non-violenceall reside in us. The seeds ofignorance, anger, fear, hatred allremain deeply embedded in oursub-conscious minds. Peace andNon- violence starts when theseeds of anger and hatred are notwatered. Truth arises when thereis no fear but there is trust, trust

in the strength of anyrelationship. Trust betweenindividuals, between neighbors, societies and nations enables usto move, from micro to macro.

Truth and Non-violence havebeen inevitable parts ofGandhian philosophy. He spenthis whole life for the sake oftruth. To all appearances, non-violent movement by Gandhi isvisible as a stratagem, wellplanned to free India from theclutches of British Raj. But, ifwe take a deeper look ‘non-violence’ is the ethical principleguiding human beings in their lifeand politics included in that.Non-violence was used byGandhi to reach a goal, but it isnot just an aspiration; it is an endin itself. Mahatma Gandhi wasa messenger of peace, non-violence and truth. His conceptof ‘Non-violence’ is closelyintertwined with his otherphilosophies like love, truth, Godand finally Satyagraha. Gandhiwas always a seeker of truth,

and had a strong conviction thatmorality is the basis of all thingsand truth is the substance.Truthfulness for Gandhi was notonly in words, but in thoughtsalso, and not just relative truthas we conceive but Absolutetruth, the everlasting, the undyingthat is God. ‘Ahimsa’ is themeans and Truth is the end. Thetwo terms ‘Truth’ and ‘Non-violence’ are entwined and it ispractically impossible todisentangle them. Gandhi’s‘non-violence’ was not just a toolused to attain freedom, his Non-violence is deeply rooted in therealm of spirituality whichexploded not only on the Indianpolitical stage but also on theworld stage and left indeliblemark on the pages of history fortimes to come. He was apolitician ‘trying to be saint’ ashe said. A great person…dependable and genuine, henever wanted to be a hypocriteand wanted to touch the heightsof divinity. He knew withouttouching the lives of the humanson earth he couldn’t take thepath of God, and for that herequired purity at heart and in life.He believed that to maintain theway to peace, justice andsalvation, one must begin withone’s own heart and daily life. Itis only a pure and a true heartwith which one can give himselfselflessly for a cause andachieve desired results. Godsees intentions and when

intentions are pure, He worksalong with man.

‘Love is God and God isLove.’ Everything that is pure, everything that is true, is notwithout love. Once Gandhidescribed ‘Non-violence’ to oneof his friends and said ‘it is totalabsence of ill-will towards anyform of life. It is just pure love.’It is only when one hascompassion, love for all, can hebe non-violent not only in actionsbut in thoughts also. Be itChristians or Muslims or theHindus, a spiritual source of non-violence can always be found inthe writings of all. Spirituality isseeing the self in all. How canone be cruel, destructive, derogatory, or inimical to anyonewhen he is spiritual in the truesense? Violence of any kind isimmoral; it is not ethical, and noreligion ever taught this to itsfollowers.

And so, he chose the path ofnon-violence to bring peace, andjustice to attain freedom.Gandhii believed that God lovesall. He firmly stood his groundand remained true to the hardpath he had taken. He knew ifhe remained firm and remainedthe God’s way, the result wouldbe nothing but success.

Satyagrah was another holystrategy which he used againstthe British. He was sure of thistoo, and so, without any killingand retaliating in any destructive

manner he could attain freedomfor India. This was the spirit oflove which won. It was the voiceof all the Holy Scriptures whichmade Gandhi stand steadfast tohis values ‘truth’ and ‘non-violence’.

Indeed Gandhi was a trueactivist, a lawyer, a politician, asocial reformer, a revolutionaryand above all a true man of God,a saint who showed the powerof Love in the form of non-violence, truth, purity, andholiness. He showed that it islove that rules the world. Thecore of our very existence i.e.love rules this Universe. Beyondour changing body, thoughts, feelings lies love which is verysubtle, very delicate, whichcannot make us inhuman, violent, and dishonest. Thatconsciousness, the core ofexistence is responsible for thiswhole Creation. And, there liesGod.

In fact, it is only God wholiberates us from the vices deeplyrooted in us, viz. Lust, Anger,Greed, Attachment, Ego etc.,which are the root causes ofnumerous problems of the worldlike violence, terrorism, crimes, lawlessness, female foeticide, corruption etc. Even though Indiagot liberation from the foreign ruleand became a sovereign nation,Mahatma Gandhi’s dream ofRam Rajya in Bharat couldn’t befulfilled. Subsequently, the

degeneration of values in thepresent day India has been agreat cause of concern. Theproblems of the world are on therise and it can be truly inferredthat the world is not the placeworth living.

However, Prajapita Brahmakumaris Ishwariya VishwaVidyalaya propagates the divineknowledge bringing us goodtidings that the present period isthe Confluence Age, when mostbenevolent Incorporeal GodShiva reincarnates in the old worldand gives us the true knowledgethrough the medium of PrajapitaBrahma. He reveals that the mainreason behind all the problems ofthe world is our bodyconsciousness, which gives birthto all the vices as mentionedabove and makes us impure. Thus, He asks us–souls–to bepure and connect ourselvesdirectly with Him, so as to liberatethe whole world from the clutchesof Ravan Rajya, i.e., the rule ofvices, which are present in all ofus. He also tells us that now wemust put in our best efforts toeradicate the Ravan from ourmind and intellect; then only BapuGandhi’s dream of Ram Rajyawill be fulfilled. So, let’s pledge tofollow God’s most benevolentShrimat and create Golden-Ageon earth. Remember there will beWorld Transformation throughSelf Transformation and it is Nowor Never!

Before continuing somemore games that themind plays, let us

understand the relationshipbetween conscious mind andsubconscious mind orsanskars. Thoughts aregenerated in mind and areconsidered and judged byintellect. The intellect includesthe powers of judgement, discrimination, memory, decision, under-standing, will-power etc.

After pondering over thethoughts, intellect gives itsdecision which the soul bringsin action, also havingconsidered its past experiencesaccumulated in the form ofsanskars, which include habits, beliefs, memories, tendencies, instincts and personality traits. If a soul is weak, thensanskars play a dominant roleand generally win. If thesanskars are good, theseinfluence the soul to performnoble actions. If the sanskarsare full of impurity and defects, and the soul takes decision

under their influence; theintellect is weakened.Meanwhile, mind goes onexperiencing the whole gameof emotions, feelings andthoughts. In order to havelasting peace of mind, theintellect needs power andknowledge and the sanskarsneed to be purified. ThroughRajyoga Meditation, we canobtain real and permanentpeace of mind. Meditation alsostrengthens the soul byproviding it wisdom andpurifying the sanskars.

When someone says, ‘I willtry’, I know he will not, as hehas already given a signal to hissub-conscious mind to take thematter casually. Knowing this,I insist that he should say ‘Yes,I will’ or say, ‘Sorry, I will not’so that I may know whether tocount on him or not. Do not givewrong signals to your mind; elseit will pick wrong sanskars, likeprocrastination, avoidingresponsi-bility etc. Do not limityour mind, but challenge yourlimitations and then the mind will

do wonders. When a wooden plank is

placed on a floor one can easilywalk on it. But if it is placed ontwo tables at a distance, manywill walk with caution. However, when it is placed on thebalconies of two houses onsecond floor, hardly few will dareto cross over! The plank is thesame then what creates the fearin the mind? Who plays thetrick?

Mental Assumptions –When we observe a peculiarbehaviour of a person, subconsciously, we stamp onour mind –he is like that. Whensimilar circumstances arenoticed, the needle of suspicionturns to him. In my childhood, Iwas stamped as a naughty child.Once, my elder brotherobserved that the nib of his penwas broken; everyone includingmy mother concluded that Imust have done that. Mybrother slapped hard on myface. It was paining, but Icontrolled my emotions and didnot cry. That further aggravatedhis anger and he beat me evenmore. In the evening my uncle, who had gone to a neighbouringtown, returned and told that itwas he who had broken itaccidentally. No one said ‘sorry’to this poor child! Never stampanyone. Even if you have

noticed peculiar behaviour oradamant sanskar in someone, give him space (of time),knowledge and inspiration bybeing an example of what youwant to teach him; perhaps hemay transform. When I change, the world will change. It startsfrom me!

Associated Memories –We continue to observe thestamped person and go onadding more and more eventsinto his account, and deriveconclusions. However, in doingso many times we do injusticeto such a person. We forgetthat everything is prone tochange. No one is the samesince we first met him. Even weare constantly changing.Nature, five elements arechanging, souls are changing.Only thing that is constant is‘change’ itself, and God, thereference point, that neverchanges. That is why God is

known as Sadashiv because Heis benevolent to all souls–at alltimes and under allcircumstances. So, we mustgive space to everyone tochange; let’s encourage andinspire them to change, forgiving and forgettingwhatever way they might havebehaved. Enlighten them ifpossible; otherwise just havegood wishes and pure feelingsfor them. Don’t carry ill feelingsas that will block their progress.

It is said – ‘An idle mind is adevil’s workshop!’. Actually, conscious mind is not a sinneror devil. It is as innocent as achild. The sub-conscious mind, where our memory track is, isnotorious. When the consciousmind is little free, the sub-conscious mind feeds somethingfrom the past, like someone’srude remark or his/herbehaviour and a web startsspinning and the mind gets

trapped in it like a fly in thespider web. Before sub-conscious mind introduced thatthought, the mind might havebeen light and cheerful but afterinteracting with the sub-conscious mind, it loses itsflavour. Conscious mind is likeplain water and subconscioushas all sorts of things! It cancontaminate the plain water. So,put a full stop to the past.

We can have all sorts ofattainments—even physicalones like flashy cars, luxuriousbungalows, wealth and physicalhealth–everything can beattained by knowing themechanism of how mind andsubconscious mind work. If wepractise to give positivedirection to our thought process,it can bring wonderful andbeneficial changes in the selfand others.

OM SHANTIOM SHANTIOM SHANTIOM SHANTIOM SHANTIJURISPRJURISPRJURISPRJURISPRJURISPRUDENCEUDENCEUDENCEUDENCEUDENCE

OM SHANTI JURIS-PRUDENCE not onlybrings spiritual solace

to the individual souls disturbedby the inner troubles and turmoilor have deep craving for thefinal liberation, but it alsotransforms the society as oursthat has gravely digressed fromthe path of Purity and Peace.

Om Shanti Jurisprudence isfor all and it touches alldimensions and sections ofsociety, collectively andseparately. It deals with all socialproblems – poverty, over-population, threat of nuclear war, extreme environmentaldegradation, moral degeneration, mental tension etc. It placesthese problems in their realperspective and shows withclarity, in a simple language, asto how these problems arerooted due to lack ordegeneration of MORALVALUES that cannot be re-established without spiritualempowerment. In this context,it talks of meditation, basic moralvalues, spiritual wisdom and asuccessful resource institution

namely the Brahma KumarisWorld Spiritual University (inshort ‘Brahma Kumaris’).

Brahma Kumaris, way backin 1984, designated a documentknown as ‘PEACEMANIFESTO’. Delegatesfrom about 40 countries hadsupported that Manifesto, which emphasised the need toinculcate moral values. TheGeneral Assembly of theUnited Nations proclaimed theyear 2000 as the InternationalYear of the Culture of Peaceand UNESCO was designatedto implement this project. Agroup of Noble Peace PrizeLaureates was requested tosuggest the core values ofCulture of Peace. Theysuggested six values and thesetogether were named asManifesto 2000.

Brahma Kumaris publisheda treatise titled ‘SPIRITUALSOLUTIONS TO WORLDPROBLEMS’. It had beennoticed that more and morepeople were veering round theview that the real solution toworld problems lies in

Spirituality. Even a materialisticworld body such as the WorldBank is adopting this view andis trying to utilize the servicesof spiritual leaders in promotingspirituality so that poverty canbe reduced.

In the late sixties or earlyseventies, a book was publishedby Brahma Kumaris toemphasise, in a very simplelanguage, the necessity ofadopting moral values when inthose days it was notfashionable to write books onsuch themes. The book wastitled ‘MORAL VALUES,ATTITUDES AND MOODS’.

Brahma Kumaris’ regularteachings contended that moralvalues were not only to be madea part of education in schoolsand colleges but also it wasnecessary to inspire all age-groups and all professions orsections of the society tointernalise the moral values, forwithout that it would be almostimpossible to educatesuccessfully the children andthe youth in values or to end themoral rot in the society. Here, itwould be quite justified to quoterelevant observations from thejudgments delivered by Hon’bleSupreme Court of India in Ms.Aruna Roy & others–Petitioners V/s. “The National CurriculumFramework for SchoolEducation” pertaining toeducation for valuedevelopment … is the coreuniversal values accepted by allreligions.

“Is universal peace anidealist’s dream, a pragmatist’spractical plan or an altruist’sattainable goal? Will peace everremain a receding vision, anelusive experience or is the timeripe when a few ethical stridescan enable us to lay our handson it? How can man’s wish forglobal peace be fulfilled? Whatwill be the new paradigm, whichis capable of creating a NewWorld order, characterised bylasting and complete peace?”These are some of thequestions which Om ShantiJurisprudence answers.

The State of UNIVERSALPEACE is that state of universein which elements and forces ofNature are in perfect harmonywith each other and lend bestcomfort to man, and therelations of every individual withall others are characterised, unexceptionally by inbornsincerity, goodness, honesty, natural cordiality, love and joy.Society is not to be tornasunder by any kind of strifebased on caste, colour, creed, regional or national boundaries, languages, religious beliefs or

antagonistic political oreconomic systems.

Now, to many, this descriptionof the state of universal peacewould seem to be an idealist’sdream. In the Vedas, theUpanishads, the Mahabharatand other sacred books, it iswritten that in the first age ofthe world, also known as GoldenAge, people led a naturallyreligious life and righteous life(Dharmo Vishvasya Jagatopratishtha); they were born ina holy way and were self-governed (Atharva Veda 5-59-6); there were no formal statelaws to govern them; they didnot suffer from any disease(Shvethashetar Upanishad 2-12).

Early Greeks and Romanalso believed that first age of theworld was the Golden Age.Writing about this, in his book‘Living Issues in Philosophy’,Herold Titur says: “Greeks andRomans believed in the theoryof the World History cycle.History moves in cycles like theseasons or like a wheel, but overlong periods of time, there area series of changes, leading backto a starting point or originalstate as the process repeats

itself. “Seneca believed thathuman life is periodicallydestroyed and that each newcycle begins with a Golden ageof innocence and simplicity;arts, inventions and later, luxuries, lead to vice anddeterioration due to entropywhich means that the usableenergy-level in the world musthave been much higher in thefirst age of the world ascompared to what it is today.Rudolf Classus, the GermanPhysicist, has also said thatentropy (i.e. unavailable or‘bound’ energy or pollution) inthe world tends towardsmaximum.” So the environmentin the Golden or the First Agemust have been clean and thehuman body and the materialproducts of nature also musthave been full of availableenergy in that age.

Universal Peace is surely nota mere dream of idealists, or amere utopia. The path to it ispaved with ethical values, withmeditation and with Godlywisdom and there is openinvitation to one and all to marchalong this only path of sanity forthe other path is, of sure doom.

Towards a Post-Modern ‘Environmentalism

Environmentalism isgenerally viewed as themovement designed to

help protect and preserve thenatural world around us, distinctfrom the artificial world ofhomes, neighbourhoods, andcities. This is an overly narrowview. Environmentalism needsto be extended to our innerspace, our psyches, as well asthe external world, if we are tobe effective in tackling thepressing environmentalproblems.

Our global environmentalcrisis continues, but it is a slow-moving crisis and, therefore, nottriggering the appropriatereactions. Problems likebiodiversity loss, oceanacidification, deforestation, climate change, etc., all takeplace on the scale of decades, even centuries, which is far tooslow for most of us to really careabout these issues. And this iswhy those who self-identify asenvironmentalists or moreimportantly, work actively toimprove any of these problems, are generally a small minority of

the population.Complicating matters in

recent years, is the worst globalrecession in decades, withjustified concerns about jobsand our economy and anongoing “war on terrorism”that distracts from other issuesincreasingly in other parts ofthe world that activelycampaign against manyenvironmental causes.

What are we to do then inorder to tackle these slow-moving environmental crises? There are numerous policy andpractical recommendationsavailable for all of theseproblems and many othershave offered sensible solutionsto all of the environmentalchallenges we’re facing. Yetnone of these major problemsis being solved at the pacerequired – and many are notbeing solved at all.

What’s missing? It seems tome that we need to changeourselves as much or morethan we need to change theworld. This essay focuses on afew ideas for the cultural/

psychological/spiritual shift thatseems necessary for us to solvethe environmental challengeswe face.

Deep Science “World” usedto mean the “universe” inaddition to referring to our littleblue-green planet. It was thetotality, everything. The Germanphilosopher Schopenhauermused in the 19th Centuryabout “unsnarling the worldknot” – that is figuring out whatthis is around us. But as ourknowledge of the world/universe grew, our vocabularygrew; “Universe” was usedthroughout the 20th Century torefer to the sum total of planets, stars, nebulas, etc., revealed byour modern telescopes.Nowadays, some use the term“multi-verse” rather thanuniverse to refer to the totality– now we know there is“Paramdham”, which mayinclude other dimensionsbeyond our detection. Therewere Scientists who offered agreat overview of this historybut those were rejected becauseit could not be proved. Samestands for the presence of God.Is there anyone? It can berelated to presence of Airaround us, which can be onlyfelt.

This shift in vocabulary andphilosophy is a direct result ofthe ongoing scientific andmathematical exploration of the

Page 27: the world renewal oct 2012

The World Renewal, October 201228

reality outside of us. As ourknowledge of our surroundings–our environment – hasincreased, our vocabulary andconcepts have evolved. Wehave grown our worlds bygrowing ourselves, and vice-versa.

The last few centuries havewitnessed unprecedentedadvancements in the study ofnature, yielding supercomputersthat fit in our palms, space flight, and weapons that can simulateArmageddon if unleashed. Butthe study of inner space, thehuman psyche, is an even richertradition and has been ongoingfor millennia. This inner science,or “deep science,” has beenmost pronounced in thetraditions of Hinduism,Buddhism, and Taoism. OurWest has many of its ownsimilar traditions, but it is fair tostate that the Eastern traditionshave a much longer history andmore depth in this regard.

The whole world has, in fact, sacrificed inner growth in manyways in order to be sosuccessful at building materialwealth. When more than one inten people in every state ofevery country is on anti-depressant medication, perhapsas many take anti-anxietymedication, and more than onein a hundred people areincarcerated, it is clear that we,

in the iconic civilization of theworld, have major issues.

There is a growingawareness that this set ofproblems stems at least in partfrom our alienation from nature.E.O. Wilson coined the term“Biophilia” for the human lovefor nature, for life. We do indeedhave an affinity for life itself, inall its grandeur and diversity, even though this affinity is sooften sublimated in our highlytechnological modern culture. Istrongly agree, that by re-acquainting ourselves with thenatural world – hiking, camping, studying life, meditating etc., wemay mitigate many of the innerproblems we face, individuallyand collectively.

My fear, however, is that ourincreasing “technologization”may only exacerbate ourseparation from nature.Technology is ubiquitous now, particularly personalelectronics, and this trendseems very likely to continuerapidly in coming years. But Iactively seek time in nature freefrom technology, and see this asa major component of my peaceof mind. The marvels of moderntechnology are exciting, but areeasily rivalled by nature’smarvels when we dig a little andstart to understand life on ourplanet.

Mind and Spirit: the inner

work we need to completestarts with recognition that weare indeed special. We are thebleeding edge of consciousnessin our corner of the universe. We are, as far as we know, theonly game in town in terms ofhigher self-consciousness,technologically adeptconsciousness. We have, ashuman beings, achieved what istantamount to a quantum leapin intelligence and technologywhen compared to all otherspecies. We are Masters untoourselves. Unfortunately, weare the kind of Masters whooften do very unwise things andre-enact all manner of pettyhuman dramas.

Our astounding humanachievements have been mostpronounced in the modern era, which has its roots in thescientific revolution of the 17thCentury. The advent of themodern era is generallycharacterized by increasingspecialization and the immenseamounts of new knowledge thatsprings from specialization. With specialization comesseparation. Most people can’tpossibly understand even asmall fraction of the totality ofhuman knowledge today. Theage of Renaissance men haslong been over – there is simplyfar too much knowledge for anyone person to gain even partial

Page 28: the world renewal oct 2012

29The World Renewal, October 2012

mastery. With this specializationwe have realized the fruits oftechnology in all their glory. Butthe downside has beenincreasing alienation – fromeach other, from much ofhuman knowledge, and perhapsmost importantly from natureherself.

A post-modern worldview isneeded, but not the decons-tructive nihilistic post-modernism that has foundfavour in some quarters. Rather,we need a post-modernism thatrecognizes our active kinshipwith all of nature by integratingour humanity seamlessly withthe rest of nature. We areindeed special in the degree towhich we have evolved greatintelligence and the techno-logical fruits of that intelligence, but we are not different in kindfrom the rest of nature. Thereis, throughout nature a conti-nuum of consciousness, ofcomplexity, and of technology.

Many species use tools, technology, and language –though in almost all cases theseare much simpler than ourhuman examples. Beavers aremaster dam-builders, termitesmaster mound builders, birdsmaster nest-builders. And in avery real sense, the sum ofspecies on our planet createdthe very lively environment wehumans enjoy – with bacteria

leading the way in producingoxygen and many othercomponents of our biosphereduring the course of planetaryevolution. This is all part of thisDrama; it does not have an endor a start. It just goes on.

With respect to language, themore we learn about animal, plant, and microbial communi-cation, the more we realize thatthere is a cacophony oflanguage all around us – wehave not heard because wecouldn’t understand. We arebeginning to understand, however, and this increasedawareness of the depth ofcomplexity in non-humanspecies will help create thepost-modern worldview weneed.

There is a growingawareness that the philosophicalpositions of the modernworldview are inadequate. Themodern worldview evolved inpart from Descartes’ dualistview of mind and matter, andlater into today’s prevailingmaterialist worldview, whichhas generally lopped off themind/spirit aspect of Descartes’dualism and left behind onlydead matter. Today’s mate-rialists, who dominate thecultural elite in science andphilosophy, believe that all thingscan be explained by explainingthe relationships between

fundamentally mindlessparticles that are thought tocomprise everything in theuniverse.

An increasingly popularalternative, however, is the viewthat mind is very much part ofnature from the top to thebottom. It’s all a continuum. Inthis view, known as panpsy-chism, all of nature includesmind and matter ascomplementary aspects in eachunit of nature.

Panpsychism is just one ofmany possible routes to ahealthy post-modernism, but itis in my view a particularlypromising one because it islogically coherent, can explainthe available data in many areasof science, and also leads tomany interesting new paths forscience and philosophy.

Ultimately, science is aprocess of self-discovery,whether it is inward – oroutward-directed. The deepenvironmentalist, the deepscientist, realizes that the entireuniverse is our extended mind.Whatever goes around comesaround {Hisab-Kitab}. Wilson’sBiophilia hypothesis becomessimply an expanded version ofself-reflection. As we seek tounderstand our own world andseek other worlds or even otherdimensions, we will with thisunderstanding always end up

Page 29: the world renewal oct 2012

The World Renewal, October 201230

staring at ourselves in the mirror. This is not a bad thing:Self-reflection is to be encouraged. It is also inevitablebecause even if we are not consciously self-reflective,we can’t avoid interpreting literally everything about theworld around us in terms of its importance to each of us.This is what it means to be a conscious being – we arenecessarily self-centered.What you will look in the Mirror?? - BeautyWhat you will look in the Mirror?? - BeautyWhat you will look in the Mirror?? - BeautyWhat you will look in the Mirror?? - BeautyWhat you will look in the Mirror?? - Beauty

or the Beast?or the Beast?or the Beast?or the Beast?or the Beast? It is an art to look at Beauty and Beast with equanimity.

And the greatest threat to that is fear. Fear is the bigdistorting mirror. We look in the mirror and see Beast, and stay with Beast because Beast says, “I have nothingto live up to, and have plenty of excuses for not having todo anything.” Or we look into the mirror and see Beautyand ignore Beast. And if Beast does not get at least anod of acknowledgement, he will chase us, driving usfrom within the labyrinth of our sub-conscious, demandingsacrifices – a missed opportunity here, a damagedrelationship there. He will rear his ugly head manifestingas projections, denials, excuses and distortions of truth. So Beauty has to fall in love with Beast to turn him backin to a prince. And the only way for Beauty to love Beastis go beyond fear. Look into the mirror and see beyondBeast and just see light. Light fills you with the love andcourage to face and transform your weaknesses and thestrength to explain your strengths. For this one needsSelf-Consciousness.

This necessary self-centeredness doesn’t, however, have to contain the negative implications. This termnormally conveys if we expand our sense of self. Throughlearning, exploration, immersion in life and nature, bymeans of Meditation – by remembering our belovedFather, we expand our sense of self. There are no reallimits on this process.

This process of self-expansion and self-reflection couldbe a powerful cure for the numerous and pressingenvironmental problems we face on the only habitablepart of the universe we currently know: our planet Earth.Let’s get to it.

SET THE DRAMAOF LIFE UNFOLD

ITSELFBeing a good organiser, I have

planned my day. I’ve listed all theactivities and schedules for the next24 hours. I have a lot to accomplish. Iam not one for being caught up intrivial matters. I am methodical andefficient with my time. After all, timeis valuable and should be utilisedwisely. So, I have made my plans forthe day.

And what a day! From earlymorning, everything seems to beconspiring to make a mockery of myplan, of my efficiency. I have beenconfronted with many unexpectedcircumstances, demanding my timeand energy, keeping me away fromthe “real”, or so I think, things thatconcern me. Yes, life is full of itsuncertainties and my best-made plansare sometimes made useless andineffective.

The best way to maintain a state ofequilibrium and always remain calmis to become an observer. Step asidea little and watch the scenes of thedrama. Even though I am an actor inthe scene and I have to enact my rolein these events, I can develop a stateof conscious detachment that helpsme to deal more effectively with thesituation. Being too close, I take myrole in the drama for the real thing. This helps me to become moreassertive, confident and positive andI’m able to maintain my cool – myequilibrium.

This is an opportunity toshare with esteemedreaders how the TV

programme ‘Awakening withBramakumaris’ has brought achange in my life and helped melead a much simpler, happier andpeaceful life. I started watchingthis programme about 2-21/2years ago. At first, I just liked tolisten to Sister Shivani speak–hervoice, so calm and composed, feltso nice. Whatever she saidalways rang with logic for meand made sense. Like bulbslighting in my brain. I used to think‘Yeah! What she is saying is true!Yes, I feel happy when someonepraises my dress, and sad whensomeone criticizes the samedress; so obviously it has gotnothing to do with the dress!’ Theidea that we are souls, and notbodies, became quite clear. Butthe real difference came when Ithought – ‘Why not try it out inmy day-to-day life? Let’s give ita shot! Let me put in some effortto watch and check my thoughtsand take self responsibility’. Sincethen it became much harder, butmuch more fun too. Whenever Iused to feel sad over somethingor the other, I just sat back and

questioned myself till I got holdof the Belief System that mademe think so and make it a pointto note it down in my diary forfuture reference and writedown the old belief system andthe new one in separatecolumns. Also, that one minutepause after each hour helps alot.

With time, it has become somuch easier to voluntarily choosemy thoughts in each and everysituation rather than ricochet offan automated response like “It’sOK if they didn’t wish back–they probably didn’t noticebecause they were busy thinkingover something” or “I don’t haveto get irritated just because thingsaren’t happening my way”. Theone thought that has helped mea lot is that ‘Everybody is right intheir own perspective, whateverthe situation is.’ It helps solve somany resentments over so manyissues and saves me fromendlessly harping over it, in mymind. Another helpful one is‘whatever happens, happens forgood’ (All the scenes of thedrama are accurate andauspicious). Well, I havereally benefited by letting go

these small-things not beingjudgmental, let things be as theyare and to be happy while I amdoing something and not base myhappiness on thefavourable result.

It has shown me how to bringself-improvement in any aspect Iwant, by drawing self-confidencefrom the fact that I am basicallya soul, originally pure in nature, with the wonderful qualities ofPeace, Happiness, Love,Knowledge, Power, Bliss andPurity. It helps me put an end tonegative self-talk and the processof self-improvement begins.

For sharing all this knowledgeand explaining it in such awonderful way, I am eternallygrateful to Sister Shivani, whomI had the opportunity to meet forthe first time at MCD centreRajouri Garden on 30th Sept2012, where she had come tospeak in a programme. I couldjust meet her for a moment or sowhen I handed her my 'ThankYou' card, but even then I cherishevery second of it. Sister Shivaniis really an amazing person andshe has inspired many souls onspiritual path. The spiritualteachings have created suchconfidence in me that self-development seems simple andpossible. Self-improvement isobviously an ongoing journey withlots and lots to do. But at leastthere is a hope, that we can do it,if we want. It is just a thoughtaway.

MIND CONTRMIND CONTRMIND CONTRMIND CONTRMIND CONTROL –OL –OL –OL –OL –CRIME CONTRCRIME CONTRCRIME CONTRCRIME CONTRCRIME CONTROLOLOLOLOL

At BhubaneswarRailway Station, Icame across a thought

provoking sentence writtenabove the ticket counter. It said:“Where there are no laws, thereis conscience”. It means wherethere are no laws to regulate thebehaviour of man; there isalways the conscience to guidehim. True indeed! Conscience isthe inner voice of a man tellinghim what is wrong and what isright, what is just and unjust.Conscience is that invaluable giftgiven to man by God thatdistinguishes him from animals. But these days man is not usingthis gift anymore and hasbecome a servant of his mind.As they say, mind is a betterservant but a bad master, mindcan be our foe as well as ourfriend. One cannot ignore therole played by mind. In criminallaw, the liability of a man isjudged by his intentions. Thecriminal act of a person initiateswith criminal intent hence thepresumption is that an offencecommitted with a guilty mind(mens rea) only attracts penalprovisions. So, no act is per secriminal; the act becomes

criminal when the actor does itwith a guilty mind. The ancientlegal maxim “actus non facitreum nisi mens sit rea” is aundisputed principle forcenturies which envisages thatno man should be convicted ofa crime unless the tworequirements of (i) actusreus—physical and (ii) mensrea—mental elements aresatisfied in every crime. It is anatural justice principle wherethe intent and act must bothconcur to constitute the crime. Thus, law enquires into themind of a person and punishesa criminal accordingly. So, wecan say that the seed of a crimethrough a thought firstgerminates in the mind and thenit is manifested in action. Theouter world of a man is thereflection of his inner world. Soattempts should be made toreorganize this inner world ofa man. Man has goneadventuring into outer spacebut has alienated himself fromhis own inner space.Nowadays, we find lawseverywhere. There arepersonal laws, criminal laws, intellectual property laws, trade

laws, labour laws andenvironmental laws etc. Butthese laws have not helpedameliorate human problems.Crime rate in almost allcountries is constantly on theincrease. Enacting law is not theonly solution. When mind is theguiding factor in every crime, then why not start from the minditself? The challenge is how tomake man’s mind, individualand collective, switch from viceto virtue, vulgarity and brutalityto values of goodness andhumanism, neither by threats, nor by plaintive cries, nor evenby mere reasoning but byenlivening the human spirit intocreative channels the cure is notPenal Code nor police gun butan inner purifying process, thediscovery of every individual’shidden divinity and therealization of the purity, whichcan transform the society andcan transform the guilty mindinto a beautiful mind. The lawwill take its course, of course, but deep within is a power, aspark, a luminous link, a latenttreasure-house of virtues whichis the manifestation of the divineand the rejection of Satan inman. As Swami Vivekanandarightly proclaimed each soul ispotentially divine. And the goalis to manifest this divinity withinby controlling nature–externaland internal. We can control theexternal nature by enacting lawsbut to control the inner nature,

we have to change theconsciousness of every man.The reformative theory of crimeproposes that crime iscommitted as a result of conflictbetween the character andmotive of criminal, eitherbecause the temptation ofmotive is stronger or restraintimposed by character isweaker. This theory aims atstrengthening the character ofthe man, so that he may notbecome an easy victim of hisown temptation. According tothis theory, a crime is like adisease and maintains that youcannot cure it by killing. So theultimate aim must be to bring achange in the mental faculty ofan offender so as to make hima useful member of the society.Only punishment is not theanswer. For centuries deathpenalty often accompanied bybarbarous confinements hasbeen trying to hold crime incheck, yet crime persists; why?Because the instincts, that aredominant forces in man, are notin a state of equilibrium.

But it is unfortunate that veryfew people understand what themind is and still fewer are able

to tap its potential to make thebest of their lives. A thoughtcreated in mind is the seed ofevery action. As they say –‘sow a thought, reap an action;sow an action reap a habit, sowa habit reap a character, sow acharacter reap a destiny’.Thoughts are created by the selfor soul as a response to anexternal stimulus or pastmemories. Thoughts are notcreated by themselves. We canchoose what we think. Thus, totransform a guilty mind into abeautiful mind, positive and purethoughts are to be generated inthe mind. Today, people aretrapped in a vicious cycle ofnegativity. They feel helplessand get caught up in the vortexof strong negative feelings, attitudes and desires. This givesrise to crime. The quality of ourpredominant thoughts, accompanied by strong feelings,is manifested through criminalacts.

Spirituality is the only meansby which crime can be curbed.Spirituality should not beconfused with religion. Wherereligion ends spirituality begins.Spiritual knowledge helps to

generate very positive and purethought for the self and othersfor which Rajyoga Meditationtaught by Prajapita BrahmaKumaris World SpiritualUniversity is the most effectivemethod. At present BrahmaKumaris organization has morethan 8500 centres spread inmore than 130 countries with itsheadquarters at Mt. Abu.Rajasthan, India.

The Brahma Kumarisemphasize on collectiveconsciousness in reforming socialenvironment and structuringpeople’s thought waves. Theefforts of the Brahma Kumarishave also been acknowledged byJustice V.R. Krishna Iyer, Judge(Retd.), Supreme Court of Indiawho stated that Rajyoga is apanacea, not of local applicationbut of global potency. Justice V.R.Krishna Iyer once said that thereis a higher court than courts ofjustice and that is the court ofconscience. Any break of its Lawcarries with it, not its vindictive, but its purifying, compellingpunishment. So to check crimewe need to empower our mindand arouse our conscience andconsciousness.

THE LAW OF KARMASpirituality teaches me to see my responsibility and what causes I am setting in motion bymy thoughts, words and actions. I just have to fulfill my responsibilities and the rights willautomatically follow, because they are the effect. This may not happen immediately, but itis inevitable. The law of cause and effect, action and reaction, the law of karma is anintegral part of spirituality. It gives us a basis on which to make right choices and create abeautiful future for ourselves and the world around us.

I was in His embrace. A greatspiritual magnetism had drawn mysoul to the Holiest Spirit and therewas great surge of love from Himthat inundated me. The light of thatLight touched me–who too was alight–and gave me such a wonderfulsoothing, comforting, refreshing, enlivening and enrapturingexperience that I could not containmyself and an expression of thiswelled out from me.

And, lo, suddenly, I felt that I wasan embodied being but, for a longtime, I did not feel myself of the bodynor had I any gross feeling as I hadbefore this ecstatic ‘moment’–I callit a moment not in terms of siderealtime but because I had lost all senseof time then, and when I returned tothe physical, its cherished memorygave me the feeling that it was, ascompared to eternity, not even amoment. However, ever since thatmoment, God was more real to methan even a mountain. And, thewords uttered by God; “Bachchey,Ladley…Meethe Bacheche: (Child,O My fondling, My Sweet Child’)had very much entered into my life. This was precursor to later divineexperience–all ennobling andenrapturing.

But I know that, over the past twothousand years or more, there hasbeen prevalent, in some sections ofmankind, the belief that man can

neither see nor hear God.Long ago, the saying hadgone round that the sight ofGod is ‘what man’s flesh andblood cannot bear”. It wasthought that ‘to be in thepresence of God is ashattering experience toperceive.

God is to be crushed byHis majesty. Example isgiven of Arjuna of the Gita-fame, who, on seeing avision of what is called His‘Universal Form’, said: “ ...the world is terrified; so amI”. Examples are also given, from the Bible, of Isaiah,Abraham and Moses. WhenIsaiah had a vision of theLord/God, he said. ... “I amundone”. It is even said thathe who sees God, cannotremain alive,” and that whenGod appeared unto Moses,“the people trembled ... themountain trembled greatly.”!

But, it is a pity, that in thiscontext, people conve-niently forget that the words,‘cannot remain alive’, etc.,are metaphorical. Thesedivine words have beenused to express a spiritualexperience, of which theparallel is only the physicaldeath. When a personphysically dies, he takes

rebirth in another family; hismemories of past physicalrelationships, etc. usually getobliterated and forgotten.similarly, when a person gets avision of God, the Holiest Father,he also dies a ‘death’, so to say,and is ‘spiritually reborn’. It isin this sense that the statement:‘one who sees God cannotremain alive’, is meaningful.Else, as the Bible says, Moseshad a vision of God and he lived, too, thereafter. Did not he?

So, it would be of grave lossto a man to believe that hecannot have a perception of HisBeing or that the experience ofGod’s presence is shattering. His presence is shattering onlyin the metaphorical sense, for avision or experience of Godbreaks the hard veil of one’signorance.

For us, not only is theexperience of God a possibility buta spiritual birthright of every soul, and it is also a blissful experiencepar-excellence which anyone, who endeavours to be holy, canhave. The present era, called theSangam Yuga, is the periodextraordinary for an easy andsuccessful union with God.
