Terrific Tuesdays Coming This Summer!
Do you want to make your summer Tuesdays terrific? 4H Home & Family Committee (oversees Foods and
Nutrition and Sewing projects) wants to help youth get a jump start on some projects for the fair. Do you want to learn to make jam and biscuits, or a
mouthwatering cookie? How about a pillow case for yourself or a friend? Maybe a quilted wall
hanging? We will be making these and other items that we can do in an afternoon. We are working on
the details to provide these opportunities on Tuesdays from June 14th through July 28th,
provided there is enough interest. Talk it over in your 4H clubs and with your family. You can come to one class or all and parents are welcome! When you leave for the day you will have an item that you can exhibit at the fair and the knowledge on how to do it again. We want it to be fun and there will be a community service
aspect as well. So keep these days in mind and watch for more details next
month!

2011 4H SENIORS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Michele Gutenberger—Seas Branch Smithies High School: Westby Graduation Date: May 28, 2011 Years in 4H: 10
Parents: Brian & Teresa Gutenberger Plans after graduation: Attend UWMadison for Agricultural Business In Michele’s own words: I thoroughly enjoy every project in 4H that I am involved in. I am/was involved in dairy, rabbits, clothing, cultural arts, cooking, photography, gardening, child development and house plants. Through the years, my favorite projects in 4H have been dairy, clothing and cultural arts. I am the most active in the dairy project. I show not only at the Vernon County fair, but also at the Wisconsin State Fair in Milwaukee for 5 years and several other shows throughout the year. In my 4H club, the Seas Branch Smithies, I have been President for 2 years, Treasurer for 2 years and Reporter. My favorite club activity was participating in our club’s musical. When I was in the musical we did the themes of West Side Story and Toy Story, which we traveled all the way to the State Fair. Another activity I enjoyed was standing on my club’s float for the Syttende Mai Parade. I am also involved in the Vernon County 4H Youth Ambassadors group where I held the offices of President, Vice President and Treasurer. The most exciting events I participated in for this group was when we organized a Super Saturday with the DNR and then presented our idea at the North Central Region Volunteer Forum in Milwaukee. I have also attended Upham Woods 4H camp for 3 years. I have attended 4H Youth conference in Madison, Citizenship Washington Focus in Washington D.C., and National 4H congress in Atlanta, GA. Besides 4H, I am involved in National Honors Society, Band, Choir, Forensics, Mathlete Team, FFA, Student Council, Class Officer, Green Club and Jr. Holstein. I highly encourage kids to participate in 4H for it is a wonderful organization with so many opportunities. I would also highly recommend all youth to continue to stay active in 4H until they graduate for there are many opportunities that are only for the older youth.
Zachary Hall – Seas Branch Smithies High School: Westby Graduation Date: May 28, 2011 Years in 4H: 10 Parents: Ron & Marsha Plans after graduation: Attend UWStevens Point for environmental science In Zachary’s own words: Being in 4H has benefitted me in being able to try many different things such as woodworking, photography, dairy, gardening and shooting sports. I would have to say shooting sports and showing dairy have been my favorites. There were many fun times during the contests and in the dairy barn! I was honored to be named the top shooter for the county last year. I have also been active in sports at Westby High, having played foot ball, basketball and baseball all four years, along with being in Band and Jazz Band and various clubs. I would encourage students to join 4H as it does provide many opportunities to try things that you may not otherwise be able to. It has been great for me to be part of our club.

In Kaitlin’s own words: The project I have really enjoyed throughout my 4H experience has been dairy. The experience of training an animal and getting her ready has been so much fun. Leadership roles I’ve had in my club have been acting as club secretary and club president. My most memorable club activities have been skiing, planting trees, sledding, making Christmas cookies and making Valentine’s Day cards. Memorable County/State activities I have been in are State Fair, Vernon County Fair, “Putting Your Best Foot Forward”, seminar at the County & State levels. Activities I have been in besides 4H are cross country (4 years), track (4 years), band (marching, pep & concert, 4 years), choir,(3 years), hand bells (4 years) and drama (1 year). I have been working as a kennel attendant at the Viroqua Veterinary Center, (4 years) and have lived on a 60 cow dairy farm. Some advice I would give others in 4H would be to not quit. Although it may be very difficult at times, it will prepare you for the future and you’ll be glad you stayed in it.
Courtney M Stilwell—DeSoto Strivers 4H Club High School: De Soto High School Graduation Date: May 27, 2011 Years in 4H: 14 Parents: John and Patricia Stilwell Plans after graduation: Attend Viterbo University Nursing Major In Courtney’s own words: I have had opportunities to participate in many project areas in 4H, youth leadership and horses being my favorite. I have had many community service projects local and international; anything from spring yard work for the elderly to sending care packages overseas. Leadership activities have helped me grow as an individual and allowed me to share my growth with the younger club members. In my sophomore year I was able to work with the younger members as a camp counselor and was apart of a youth leadership group that put together a “Super Saturday” called “4H Fiesta”. It was an all day event that covered multiple project areas. This particular project was a great experience. I have also been active in softball, volleyball, basketball, Student’s Activity Council, FFA and Biology Club. I recommend others stay active in 4H because it truly is a positive role model in your life, especially speaking from a leadership position, the pleasure from working with young 4Hers and the gratitude and eagerness they have to learn is rewarding by itself.

Emily Wolfenden—Hillsboro Hotshots 4H Club High School: Hillsboro Graduation Date: May 27, 2011 Years in 4H: 13 Parents: Jay & Carol Wolfenden Plans after graduation: Attend UWMadison, Journalism and Mass Communications. In Emily’s own words: I have most enjoyed the public speaking and communications projects. As a journalism and mass communications major, the 4H speaking contest has been important in developing my speaking skills for school and forensics. I have been VicePresident and President of the Vernon County Youth Ambassadors. I have done community service through the 4H club such as highway cleanup and cleaning the fairgrounds. In Junior High I participated in Space Camp three times and traveled to Huntsville, Alabama. Resides 4H, I have taken 14 years of dance and am in or have been in FBUA, FFA, FCLUA, band, choir, forensics, Hclub, Spanish club, national honor society, track & field, volleyball, honors choir and confirmation class. I have been a class officer and have served on prom committee and prom courts. I was also a Hillsboro Fireman’s Labor Day Queen Candidate.
Carrie Lee Gehrke—Lucky Clovers High School: Viroqua Graduation Date: May 28, 2011 Years in 4H: 10 Parents: Rick & Karen Gehrke Plans after graduation: Attend WTC La Crosse for Radiologist In Carrie’s own words: The project I really enjoyed doing in 4H was my project book. The project book was a book that you made to show off what awards you have won that year. One of the leader skills I had in 4H was the horse and pony project leader. I have participated in helping the little children in my 4H with there projects every 4H meeting. One of the state activities I participated in was when I went to the State 4H Horse Show in Milwaukee. Some non 4H activities I participated in were solo ensemble at Westby high School, softball for 4 years and basketball for 3 years. Other activities were in FFA apple picking and Band, which we traveled to Washington D.C. and New York. The advice I would give others about staying active in 4H is just to participate as much as you can with anything and also help out with anything you can. It also helps if you are a leader of some sort in your 4H club; because that shows that you are a committed 4H member. When you are in 4H, it is always really good if you attend every meeting and give great ideas. I also think being in 4H is a lot of fun and I feel being in 4H shows that you are a committed and dedicated person.
Caitlin Malin—Seas Branch Smithies 4H Club High School: Westby Graduation Date: May 28, 2011 Years in 4H: 12 Parents: Paul & Laura Malin Plans after graduation: Attend UWL or Edgewood for Therapeutic Recreation In Caitlin’s own words: Throughout my years in 4H, I have been very active in my sheep projects. I have showed sheep since 3 rd grade and have enjoyed it every year. Also, I have participated in Arts and Crafts at the fair. I have been a part of Seas Branch 4H club for 4 years, but before that I was active in the Coon Prairie 4H club. I participated in many fun musicals with Coon Prairie including a couple of trips to State. Other activities I am involved in are volleyball, basketball, FCCLA, student council, band and NHS. My advice to members in 4H are to stay active and be a role model for all of the younger members. Even if you are older, stay active in the musicals because that is a wonderful opportunity. Make the effort to be a part of everything 4H offers and make lifelong friendships and connections.
