THE UPPER EXTREMITY
DO NOW
• List as many muscles in the arm as you can
DO NOW #2
• Give as many bones of the arm (elbow and up) as possible
HOMEWORK REVIEW
• Pg. 202 #15-17
HOMEWORK
• Read 209-210• Possibly, maybe, a tiny quiz to start the class (Pay
attention to pictures)• Create flash cards for all muscles covered today
in class• Deltoid• Pectoralis Major• Biceps Brachii• Rotator Cuff
SHOULDER
• Landmarks of the shoulder• Coracoid Process• Acromioclavicular joint• Greater Tubercle of Humerus• Lesser tubercle of Humerus• Deltoid Tuberosity
SHOULDER
MUSCLES OF THE SHOULDER
• Deltoid• Pectoralis Major• Biceps Brachii• Rotator Cuff• Supraspinatus• Infraspinatus• Subscapularis• Teres Major
DELTOID
• Origin: Lateral 1/3 of the clavicle; acromion and spine of scapula• Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity of humerus• Action: Prime mover of arm abduction; some
flexion and extension of shoulder
DELTOID
PECTORALIS MAJOR
• Origin: clavicle, sternum and cartilage of first 6 ribs• Insertion: Fibers insert by short tendon into
greater tubercle of humerus• Action: Prime mover of arm flexion; adducts,
medially rotates arm
PECTORALIS MAJOR
BICEPS BRACHII
• Origin: Coracoid Process of scapula• Insertion: Proximal radius• Action: Flexes elbow, supinates forearm, weak
shoulder flexor
BICEPS BRACHII
ROTATOR CUFF
• Origin: Scapula• Insertion: Head of the humerus• Action: Abduction, internal rotation, external
rotation
ROTATOR CUFF
INJURIES OF THE SHOULDER
• Biceps Tondonitis• Shoulder Impingement
BICEPS TENDONITIS
• Overuse of the biceps• Opposite of overuse?
• 2 origins of the bicep• Coracoid process• Glenoid tubercle
• Very common in swimmers, pitchers
SHOULDER IMPINGEMENT
• Commonly, an overuse injury• Muscles inflame in the shoulder and not enough
space is allowed for muscles to swell• Compress the nerve
• Sometimes it is a structural abnormality• Acromion Process hooks downward to close space
