INJURIES OF THE SHOULDER

• Biceps Tondonitis• Shoulder Impingement

Page 8: The Upper Extremity

BICEPS TENDONITIS

• Overuse of the biceps• Opposite of overuse?

• 2 origins of the bicep• Coracoid process• Glenoid tubercle

• Very common in swimmers, pitchers

Page 9: The Upper Extremity

SHOULDER IMPINGEMENT

• Commonly, an overuse injury• Muscles inflame in the shoulder and not enough

space is allowed for muscles to swell• Compress the nerve

• Sometimes it is a structural abnormality• Acromion Process hooks downward to close space

THE ELBOW/FOREARM

Page 13: The Upper Extremity

ELBOW/FOREARM

• All “flexors” are palmar side of arm • Forearm

• Extensors are opposite and on the dorsal side of the forearm

TRICEPS BRACHII

• O: Glenoid Cavity of Scapula• I: Olecranon process of ulna• A: Forearm extensor; antagonist of biceps brachii

EXTENSOR CARPI RADIALIS

• O: Lateral humerus• I: Second and third metacarpal• A: Extends and abducts wrist

Extensor Carpi Ulnaris• O: Lateral epicondyle of humerus• I: 5th metacarpal• A: Extends and adducts the wrist

MOVEMENT ANALYSIS PROJECT

• Each group will analyze a movement of their choice• Sports/Functional movement

• Groups of no more than 4, but no less than 2

HOMEWORK

• Create your group• Come to class with the movement your group will

analyze
