In spite of the hot weather and the various holiday our council remain very acti e in preparation for a new year of maintenance and walking.

WALKING 2003

2002 was a very busy year with trips extending from the Coorong to the Gammon Ranges. Some of our weekends were relaxing but adventurous, others offered a more serious challenge.

2003 offers a variety of weekend excursions predominantly in the Flinders Ranges, visiting areas not readily accessible to the public. Our accommodation will include new venues, and the walks will offer exciting vistas and challenges, catering for all, from the casual walker to those who want to stride it out.

EASTER 2003 (Friday April 18th to Monday 21st inclusive)

We start the new walking season with four relaxing days exploring in the Mt. Brown Conservation Park and adjacent private property. Stay with us in the picturesque old Gunyah Homestead, 14 km. North of Wilmington. All you need to bring will be your bed linen , clothing, toiletries and any personal needs. We supply the rest.

COST: $350.00 per person guarantees you a bed, all meals, (including afternoon tea, pre dinner nibbles/drinks and supper) and a marvellous weekend walking, exploring and relaxing in this quiet part of the Southern Flinders Ranges.

ADELAIDE CUP WEEKEND (Saturday 17th May to Monday 19th inclusive)

We visit the Dutchman's Stern Conservation Park and stay in the historic and recently renovated homestead, approximately 10 km north of Quorn. This park covers an area of 3500 hectares and offers us a myriad of walks , which include rocky outcrops, scarps and steep gorges that all combine to enhance its attractiveness and help protect the native flora and fauna.

COST: $280.00 per person includes your accommodation, all meals and guided walks.

QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY WEEKEN (Saturday 7th June to Monday gth inclusive)

Our destination is Edeowie Station, a working sheep and cattle station 56 km north of Hawker on the Hawker to Leigh Creek Road. This will be a wonderful opportunity to explore the north-western face of Wilpena Pound with a highlight being the walk into the western end of Edeowie Gorge with its massive ramparts and tree lined creeks. Our accommodation is the very well appointed Edeowie Shearers' Quarters. (Minimum numbers will be required for this event to proceed)

COST: $280.00 per person includes your accommodation, all meals and guided walks

BAGALOWIE CAM POUT (Saturday July 12th and sunday 13th)

This is our annual campout weekend, spent under canvas and the stars. This year we head for an old haunt of Simons. Bagalowie offers us new territory to explore, and country only ventured into by the locals and the occasional scout group. We make our camp at the site of an old homestead which supplies water and some protection if the elements are against us. We then spend the weekend exploring the surrounding ranges and creek beds.

COST: $150.00 per person includes all meals, guided walks and a very interesting time out in the mid-north. (limited amounts of light weight camping equipment is available for loan if required).

CARRIETON (Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th August)

We return to Carrieton to have another look at the Horseshoe and James Ranges. Once again our accommodation will be in the well presented Horseshoe View Cottage and we dine at the Carrieton Hotel on the best steaks in town.

COST: $200.00 per person includes all meals (including Saturday night at the Carrieton Hotel) , accommodation and guided walks

LAND OF THE ORA TUNGA (Saturday sth -Friday 12th September)

This is our big trip for the season. Come and stay with us on Angorichina Station for the week and take in the splendour of the ancient country north of Blinman. Join us as we wander through the hills, valleys and abandoned settlements that are steeped in the early history of the Colony of South Australia. Climb nearby Patawarta Hill where the extent of the surrounding ranges will unfold in a panorama that you will remember for always.

COST: $645.00 per person includes all accommodation, meals (including Blinman Hotel), guided walks and a relaxing week away.

MT. LOFTY

A view down through the early years

" ... at the summit of Mount Lofty, which is 2,400 feet above sea level, you will be rewarded with one of the most glorious views in Australia."

Vivienne, 1908. "Mt. Lofty is a lady, reclining on her lawns, And giving smiling welcome to all who pass that way. She clothes herself in modest mist, and never slights or scorns The many willing worshippers who pass her, day by day."

Mt. Lofty, that high ''bump" on the kyline of the range overlooking the city, ha been held near and dear by local re idents from the very fir t day of the fledgling colony. El ewhere in Au tralia on! Canbe1n and Hobart hare with u the p1i ilege of having a mountain de tination at their very door tep, a fact now being appreciated by increa ing number of Adelaide resident , and for many of u a hort fifteenminute dii e can find u oon tackling the lower slope of the mountain.

The rugged, western slope of the range -known a .. the Tier " in the early day -are impre ive by any measure. Although Mt. Mt. Lofty down to the Adelaide Plain . The e maje tic pur and the deep valley between them provide traightforward and plea ant acce to the ummit, and today fall largely within Cleland Con er arion Park.

Today, the Hey en Trail pro ide ample opportunitie to view the mountain - crub permitting- from a di tant per pective at ariou point along the ridgeline of the Mt. Loft Range , both nmth and outh. On approaching the ummit it elf, the Trail thread it way

In aboriginal time. the Kaurna, though largely confined to the Adelaide Plain , appear to ha e made vi it to the range dtuing spring and autumn. The purpo e of the e ea onal pilgrimage wa to collect the gum re in of the golden wattle for use in the manufacture of their tool , and to collect the bark of the st1ingybark for their winter helter . Thi prudent easonal u e of the range by the Kaurna allowed the game population time to recover and thu provided a relatively teady and a ured upply o~ food.

DUN AENGUS F ORT ON THE ISLE OF INISHMORE

A bucketing feny tran ported u aero Galway Bay into the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The sun gli tened on the steep and crossbreaking waves as we headed for I.nishmore, one of the three Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland. The people who live on the e islands, a do many of tho e \ ho live in the westem regions, maintain the !J·ish language and culture

We disembarked on the pier hewn out of the solid rock on which these people ha e built their island exi tence for o many generations and walked towards the cattered, small tone houses utTOLmded by chest high dty-stone walls.

ot having a plan on how to organise our ight eeing, we hired one of the jaunting cars, a

horsedrawn two wheeled catt with its dri er, for an excursion. There were a few of these caJts awaiting custom from disembarking tourists, one of the vety few ways of making a li ing on thi eemingly barren place. We mo ed off, clip

clopping along a nan·ow, winding road which

Grey clouds had mo ed over and oft rain, as the !J-ish describe the gentle rain that often falls on their lovely green land, stmted to drift down. Our dri er declined shelter from our umbrellas a our jaunting car mo ed at a gentle pace between the cottage of weathered grey rock. An appearance of great age lingered over them. Our driver pointed to one and remarked, "The people who lived there emigrated to America".

e era! seconds later he added, "We hear they

are doing vety well there, vety well." We a ked when they went to America. After long reflection he replied, "Oh, that would have been 1892."

A patchwork of walled fields developed and our driver tola us how o er the generations oil had been hauled up from the low lying areas of the

I approached rock wall that ' ere, in place , I 0-12 metre high. They formed a vast emi-circle perhap I 00 metres in diameter. The open patt terminated on the edge of a sheer cliff dropping about 200 metres down into the Atlantic.

There was only a small opening in the wall leading into the inner pa1t All along the in ide wall wa a lower ledge wide enough to walk on where men could patrol ecurely without being seen from the outside.

I later leamed thi fottification wa built about 3000 BC, roughly the same period a

tonehenge. Here, in thi vety place, man laboured hoisting rock upon rock to build this formidable structure. I walked with awe. .ouching the wall, eeing in my mind picture of ancient men, primiti ely dres ed, purpo efully engaged.

Time went by as I looked and imagined these events 5000 years ago. As I left through the small entrance, clambering over the inho pitable rock, my eye was caught by a certain repetiti e rock fotmation. It eemed rock • et odd from a di tance. On reaching it I entered an a rounding and exten i e field of harp-edged rock leaning like planted mas ive broad word . I stood here and time went by as imagined pictures of ancient times went through my mind. Thi structure of 5000 years remained a evidence of an ancient people. Of them no human remains have been found, no weapons, no attifacts. Not a trace, other than the fmtre s, from which modem man could find out about ancient man.
