dear Friends,

Welcome to Legally Blonde The Musical, which debuted in the spring of 2007 at the legendary Palace Theatre on Broadway. included in its seven Tony award® nominations were Best Choreography by Jerry Mitchell (Tony®-winner for Best Choreography of Kinky Boots on Broadway); Best Original score by Laurence O’Keefe and nell Benjamin (O’Keefe co-wrote the music, lyrics and book of the new Off-Broadway show Heathers: The Musical), and Best Book of a Musical by heather hach. Based on the novel “Legally Blonde” by amanda Brown and the 2001 MgM film, the cast included Pittsburgh’s Christian Borle as emmet, Kate shindle as Catherine (nancy in our 2009 production of Oliver!) and andy Karl, now starring in Rocky on Broadway.

This is our first residency production of Legally Blonde, though six years ago we premiered the Broadway national Tour in our summer series. We occasionally offer you “Pittsburgh firsts” direct to you from Broadway when it’s a show we’ve been involved with. To get brand new titles in our season we occasionally pool resources with other non-profit theaters to create a shared, limited tour (such as last summer’s Disney’s The Little Mermaid), or work with a combination of non-profit and commercial producers on shows like today’s and recent shows The Addams Family, Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away, and this summer’s highly-anticipated national Tour of Evita (July 8-13).

new musicals are vital to our survival as a regional theater that revives the classics (today’s shows may become tomorrow’s classics), so it comes naturally to us to strategically support an industry in search of the next Fiddler on the Roof. Legally Blonde and our upcoming production of Monty Python’s Spamalot are examples of new musicals that in our audience survey you asked us to revive, and they’re enjoying revivals by other theater companies regionally, internationally, and on the amateur circuit too: at this year’s gene Kelly awards for excellence in high school Musical Theater, three of the nine “Best Musical” contenders were shows we had a hand in bringing to Broadway: Thoroughly Modern Millie, Monty Python’s Spamalot and Catch Me if You Can, and in years past we’ve seen student productions of Curtains, Legally Blonde, 9 to 5 and Copacabana.

We love creating entertainment that is appropriate for the whole family. This is my seventeenth year of producing musicals at Pittsburgh CLO and i can tell you first hand that seeing new generations of theater lovers enjoying themselves at any show, classic or new, never grows old.

Thank you for being here.

enjoy the show!

Today’s youth are more entertainment savvy than any generation that has come before. They see movies in 3D, watch television programs “on demand” and have an extensive library of video games at their fingertips. Yet, despite being plugged into endless sources of digital fun, many have never experienced the magic of live musical theater. Each year however, Pittsburgh CLO is able to introduce more than 40,000 area students to this remarkable art form through its acclaimed Gallery of Heroes in-school musical series.

For nearly 30 years, this innovative program has touched the lives of students in urban, suburban and rural communities throughout the Tri-State area by taking them on a journey through the pages of our nation’s history with some of Pittsburgh’s finest professional actors.

Each fifty-minute fully-staged and choreographed Gallery of Heroes musical highlights the lives and accomplishments of significant historical figures and offers an entertaining alternative to traditional lectures and books. Past productions have taught students about the lives of important historical figures such as Thomas Edison in The Invention of Edison, Neil Armstrong in Footprints on the Moon, Harriet Tubman in Freedom Train and Roberto Clemente in ¡Arriba! ¡Arriba! The Roberto Clemente Story. In addition, Pittsburgh’s rich history has been portrayed in shows including The Incredibly Innovative Innovators of Pittsburgh and Steel. Pittsburgh CLO also helps teachers integrate these important history lessons into their classroom activities with study guides that meet state academic standards and fun-filled student handouts.

The 2015 spring tour will feature a new musical commissioned for the Gallery of Heroes program.

Written by Pittsburgh native and Pittsburgh CLO Alumni Joe Domencic, The Next Galileo is the story of Gabriella, a shy seventh grade girl from Pittsburgh who, with the help of an enchanted history book, goes on an amazing trip back in time to the classroom of Galileo Galilei. There, she meets the famous astronomer and learns firsthand from the “father of science” how to employ the scientific method, build a telescope, and seek the truth no matter what the consequences. Through their remarkable friendship that spans four centuries, Gabriella and Galileo take the audience on a trip that champions the joy of

science and the wonder of discovery.

For more information, or If you are interested in bringing this new musical to your school, please call 412-325-6459 or visit pittsburghCLO.org. If you or your company would be interested in sponsoring a performance of The Next Galileo for a deserving school please contact Wynne Fedele at 412-281-3973 x 232.

Great live theater is created by an intricate web of talented artists, craftsman and performers who invite audiences to suspend reality for a few hours and join them in the magic of live theater. Long before the curtain goes up, work begins behind the scenes to set the stage for these remarkable productions. Sets, backdrops and costumes all play a vital role in bringing a musical to life on stage. Since 1974, Pittsburgh CLO’s Construction Center for the Arts has defined itself as one of the largest, most cost-efficient set-building facilities in the country.

Locally, the Construction Center builds quality sets for Pittsburgh CLO’s critically-acclaimed Summer Season, the CLO Cabaret, CLO’s Gallery of Heroes in-school musical series and other local performing arts organizations.

Most recently, “the shop” built the set for the current CLO Cabaret hit Ring of Fire, the world premiere of Judge Jackie Justice, The Trials of Love and the Gallery of Heroes’ production of The Invention of Edison. In addition, over the past year, it created sets for the Cabaret productions of A Grand Night for Singing, You Say Tomato, I Say Shut-Up! and Side By Side By Sondheim. It has also completed projects for local companies and events including KDKA-TV, the Three Rivers Arts Festival, the Carnegie Science Center and the National Aviary, including its FliteZone™ Theater.

The Construction Center works on the national stage as well, creating sets for Broadway productions; National Tours including the recent tour of Buddy, the Buddy Holly Story; and regional theaters throughout the United States. The film and television industry also continue to rely on the Construction Center’s team of seasoned professionals to build state-of-the-art sets and set pieces.

In addition, “the shop” serves as a storage facility for some of today’s most sought-after sets, and through its affordable set rental program, offers regional theaters throughout the United States a viable option to set construction.

This important work has a positive economic impact beyond the stage, employing local designers, scenic artists, technical staff and both shop and road carpenters. The Construction Center is pivotal to Pittsburgh CLO’s continued success both locally and as a leader in the creation of new musicals.
