The Darling Downs Friday 27 JuneMade up of the most unlikely of collaborations between long-time members of the fertile Australian rock scene, The Darling Downs comprise of Kim Salmon (Scientists, The Beasts Of Bourbon, The Surrealists) on banjo and acoustic guitar, and Ron Peno (Died Pretty) on vocals, taking Appalachian lullabies, bluegrass and rustic folk in a completely new direction.

fem VoxSaturday 5 JulyPresented by Newport Folk and Fiddle Festival, Fem Vox is a celebration of feisty female singers. Expect the songs of Nina Simone, opera grooves and all girl groups to sit side-by-side in a sizzling night of cabaret. Tina C: Sorry Seems to be the hardest WordThursday 10 July and Friday 11 JulyMulti award-winning comedian Christopher Green brings his wonderfully outrageous character Tina C to The Substation for two nights only.

Direct from seasons at Sydney Opera House and Brisbane Powerhouse, country music superstar and global icon for the American way of life, Tina C has figured out that there are some issues to work out between the older and newer inhabitants of this country. And she’s the woman to make it happen using the obvious tool – the power of country music.

Two Mortals Rachael Dyson-McGregor and Mike McEvoyThursday 28 August, Friday 29 August and Saturday 30 AugustFollowing a sell-out season at La Mama in 2013, Two Mortals returns with cheekiness, wit and wisdom for a fresh look at mortality.

Two Mortals was created from interviews with people who work and live with mortality everyday – an undertaker, a minister, a wills and estates lawyer, a cryogenicist, a carer, a palliative care nurse and a counsellor. This multi-character performance uses headphone verbatim technique, including pre-show interviews from the audience, unique to every performance. Come early and be part of the script!

The Black SorrowsFriday 1 AugustSince their formation in 1984, The Black Sorrows have toured Australia more times than anyone can remember, played sold out shows across Europe, won the ARIA for Best Band, and sold more than a million albums worldwide. WagonsFriday 8 AugustLauded as one of Australia’s great bands, Wagons head to The Substation in support of their new album Acid Rain and Sugar Cane. Expect a show both turbulent and intricate; a controlled calamity, a triumph and an entertaining ride in the best possible way. Last year’s Wagons album preview shows in Melbourne and Sydney both sold out prior to the performance, so be sure to book your place for this bulldozer of a bill.

Swamp JuiceBunk Puppets and Manny FoxSaturday 14 June, Saturday 21 June and Sunday 22 June Using 3D shadow puppets made from bits of rubbish, award-winning performer Jeff Achtem presents an adventure about life in a swamp. Using no dialogue, the audience is plunged into a cartoon-like world where simple household items transform into silhouette creatures. With an original score performed live by Manny Fox, Swamp Juice will appeal to all ages above 5. Most certainly not just for kids!

After Sunday’s performance, be sure to join performer Jeff Achtem in a very special puppet making workshop where children can create their own individual shadow puppets.

Monkey Magic The MudcakesWednesday 9 JulyThe Mudcakes are children’s entertainers based in Australia and loved around the Universe! Their quirky, fantastic and highly interactive music show will have monkeys, big and small, up singing and dancing. You might even find yourself onstage being a puppeteer, a cheerleader, banging a drum or tooting a kazoo! Perfect for ages 2-6 years and their music loving folks. Featuring lots of cool instruments, a roving magician and even a face painter!

The Mudcakes’ Kazoo Jam WorkshopWednesday 9 JulyJoin musicians Rick Plant and Sherry Rich to learn how to play the world’s cutest instrument. Explore some crazy sounds (insects, animals, machines) and show off your new skills. By the end of this workshop you will be tooting along with the Kazoo Jam Orchestra! Best of all, everyone gets their very own kazoo to decorate and take home. Suitable for ages 4-12 years.

family Art DaysSunday 20 July and Sunday 17 AugustIf it’s a creative day for the whole family you’re looking for, head to The Substation for Family Art Day! Hands-on activities and family-friendly gallery tours, storytelling and competitions are all part of the day of creative fun. For ages 5-10 years, accompanied by a participating adult.

Our Family Art Days coincide with The Substation Farmers’ Market so it’s a great way to make a family day of it at The Substation!

Demystify the art of fermentation in this comprehensive, hands-on workshop that will show you how to make your own sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha and kefir. Leave the workshop with your own kefir grains and a jar of sauerkraut ready to ferment. Cirque DisarrayBorn in a TaxiThursday 10 July and Friday 11 JulyThe audience have arrived, the show is about to begin, but where are the performers?! Three stagehands run around nervously, looking for the stars of the show and the wild animals that have vanished. There’s only one thing left to do. Everybody stand up! Obviously no one told them there has been a change of cast! After some confusion over who is who, some on the spot training and last minute costume changes, the curtain is finally drawn and the music begins. There’s no business like show business! Words & Music – hannah Kent and LiorSaturday 26 JulyWho do our favourite writers listen to? What do the musicians we admire like to read? Join debut novelist Hannah Kent, whose book Burial Rights has been an international sensation, and ARIA-award nominated singer and songwriter Lior, whose first album Autumn Flow is one of the most successful Australian releases in recent history, as they share their personal musical and literary inspirations.
