The Solar System
Exercises
The Solar System consists of 8 planets. Some of them have their natural satellites. It is considered that the Solar System appeared from the gas cloud approximately 4,5-
5 billions years ago .
The Solar System
The planets are divided into 2 groups: the terrestrial planets
and the gas giants. The first group: Earth, Mercury, Venus,
Mars. They are far less than the gas planets in size.
The terrestrial planets
Mercury Venus Earth Mars
Mercury –is the closest planet to the Sun. It is the smallest planet in
the Solar System. It is similar in appearance to the Moon. Because
of the closeness to the Sun its surface heats up to +400°С. It doesn’t have any substantial
atmosphere.It has no natural satellites.
Mercury
Venus
Venus is the second planet from the Sun. It is close in size to Earth.
About 80% of the surface is covered with smooth volcanic
plains. It has an extremely dense atmosphere which consists of mainly carbon dioxide. It is the
hottest planet with surface temperature up to +500°С.
Venus has no natural satellites.
EarthEarth is the third planet from the
Sun. It is the largest of the terrestrial planets. It is the only
place in the Universe where life is known to exist. Its atmosphere
consist of 78% nitrogen, 21% free oxygen and ≈1% argon. Over 70% of
surface is covered with water. It has one satellite – the Moon.
The Moon
Mars
Mars is the forth planet from the Sun. It is smaller than Earth. Its
surface consists of vast volcanoes and valleys. Its red colour comes from iron oxide in its soil. It is a planet with a thin atmosphere.
Mars has got polar ice caps which consist of ice water and carbon
dioxide. An average temperature is -70°С.
Mars has two natural satellites.
Mars’s satellites
Phobos Deimos
The gas giants
The gas giants: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. They are bigger than the terrestrial planets. They consist of gas and they
haven’t got solid surfaces. They are surrounded with
rings and atmosphere which consists of hydrogen.
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
Jupiter
Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun. It is the largest planet
of the Solar System. It is covered with long layers of clouds. That’s
why it looks like striped. It is surrounded with a faint
planetary ring system. An average temperature is -130°С. There is the Great Red Spot on the Jupiter which is known as a
giant atmosphere storm. Jupiter has got 28 natural satellites.

Saturn
Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun. It is surrounded with
big and bright rings. Its rings are made up of small ice and rock
particles. The temperature is to -170°С.
Saturn has got a record number of natural satellites – 33.
Saturn’s satellites
Titan Mimas
Tethys
Uranus
Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun. Like the other
giant planets, Uranus has a ring system. Uranus is the first planet discovered with a telescope by English astronomer Sir William
Herschel (1781).It has got 20 natural satellites.
Uranus’s satellites
Miranda
Ariel
Umbriel
Neptune
Neptune is the eighth planet from the Sun. Neptune is the
first planet found by mathematical prediction rather
than by empirical observation. It is surrounded with rings.
It has got 8 natural satellites.
Neptune’s satellites
Triton Proteus
Nereid
Pluto
Pluto is the ninth planet from the Sun. It was discovered in
1930. But on 24th August 2006 the International Astronomical
Union excluded Pluto as a planet and added it as a member of the
category “dwarf planet”.
